Penny Saver Pet of the Week I’m Cookie & I love being adopted! I get a lot of attention and treats! I wag my tail like a whip when I know I’m getting a treat! I was very skinny when I was found but I filled out very well in no time. I have an older sister and a younger brother now. They are great but I still try to sneak their marrow bones when Mom’s not looking! I love to run around the yard with my siblings and who would have known that I was a great swimmer! Can’t wait to go to the lake this summer! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defensive. Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon find the situation shifting in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting that personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now, before they can create costly delays. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask for -- no, demand -- help with this problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand they show solid proof why they think your ideas won’t work. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause the usually sure-footed Goat some unsettling moments. But keep going. The path ahead gets easier as you move forward. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There also could be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of what’s right can inspire others if you remember not to push too hard to make your case. Moderation works best for you.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

Different generations can learn and benefit from one another In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Finding renewed vigor Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another. Planning for the future Younger generations may not understand the concept of “hard times” or “doing without” like a person who has lived through various ups and downs. Passing along advice about economic cycles, saving for the future and maintaining stability is one area of expertise at which many seniors excel. Practicing interpersonal skills All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become
stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation. Learning new technology Younger generations can impart knowledge of technological devices to older adults. People with skills are usually happy to share their knowledge. Even if seniors aren’t ready to purchase tablets or smartphones, they may be excited to have their grandchildren teach them about the latest gadgets. Providing sense of purpose Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the liklihood of isolation and depression in older adults. And younger generations can discover the benefits of personal social interaction rather than communicating exclusively through social media apps. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

“Mary Jane asked me to give her ways to identify symptoms that a person may be experiencing macular degeneration,” Lucas says. These include blurred vision and difficulty discerning the intensity of colors—symptoms shared by Terri Donovan, who runs a bakery and is the mother of the protagonist of Clark’s series, struggling actress Piper Donovan.

VISUALLY IMPAIRED READER INSPIRES AUTHOR (NAPSI)—Four years ago, bestselling author Mary Jane Clark spoke at the Friends of the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped’s Fall Festival. There, she met Ottilie Lucas, a former rehabilitation teacher for people with macular degeneration and other disabilities who is visually impaired herself. After the festival, “we continued our correspondence and one thing led to another,” Lucas says of Clark. “She decided to include a character in her next book with macular degeneration.”
Lucas, who was born with retinitis pigmentosa, became a patron of the New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC) in 1966. TBBC is among more than 100 libraries across the United States affiliated with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress. NLS oversees a free reading program for U.S. residents and citizens living abroad who are blind, have low vision, or cannot hold a book because of a physical disability. NLS patrons may choose from tens of thousands of books and dozens of magazines in audio and braille-including mysteries such as Mary Jane Clark’s. NLS also loans the portable playback equipment needed to read its audiobooks. Patrons may access books online through the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service. Lucas has been married 49 years and has been on more than 20 ocean cruises. “Ottilie is such an inspiration,” Clark says. “She helped me so much in the creation of Terri Donovan—a mother who faces macular degeneration head-on, who doesn’t feel sorry for herself and is determined to adapt to the challenges she faces. I wish I were as brave as Terri and Ottilie!” To learn more about how the NLS program can help you, a loved one or a friend, go online to www.loc.gov/nls or call 1-888-NLS-READ.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.
--DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know your opinion about whether it is OK to crush up different psychiatric medications and put them in a small container of water to drink. This doesn’t seem very safe to me, but I’d like an expert opinion. -- Anon. ANSWER: I’ll give you my answer, and also tell you where to find an expert opinion. My answer is that many people have trouble swallowing pills, and that most pills can be crushed and taken with water or mixed in with food. Your local pharmacy sells pill crushers, or you can get a mortar and pestle. While you are at the pharmacy, ask your pharmacist. He or she can look at your medications and tell you whether it is safe for you to crush your particular medications. Slow-release medications, of which there are many, should not be crushed. Often, the bottle will tell you, but ask your pharmacist for the expert opinion. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts about the MiraDRY procedure to get rid of underarm sweat? Is it safe not to have sweat under the arms? -- S.J. ANSWER: MiraDRY is the brand name of a microwave device designed to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is not normal underarm sweating, but a rare condition of abnormal, drenching sweat that greatly interferes with social activities. It is currently used only for underarms -- not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis. According to several published papers, the microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness. This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. I also found a very helpful website at www.sweathelp.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What causes foot drop? Is there any cure for it? -- B.H. ANSWER: Foot drop is most commonly caused by damage to the peroneal nerve, which wraps around the fibula, one of the two bones of the leg (anatomically, only the lower leg is called the leg, as opposed to the thigh). The nerve can be damaged from trauma, such as during surgery or prolonged hospitalization. Leg casts and prolonged positioning with stress on the nerve, such as squatting, also can damage the nerve. Most people describe numbness but not pain, and the dropped foot can cause people to trip, so people with this condition learn to flex the hip to lift the thigh up higher. The diagnosis can be confirmed by electrical studies of the nerves. Treatment usually is to prevent further damage, with a splint to keep the foot flexed upward. A physical therapist can prescribe helpful exercises. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Garnsey Arboretum Offers Fun Opportunity to Enjoy Native Trees
Sudoku
Go Figure! Trees: they are one of our Eastern United States Native Tree Species most valuable, natural resources. They provide food, shelter, oxygen, animal habitats, prevent soil erosion and so much more. In addition to their value, many people appreciate their majestic beauty and seek to preserve the various tree species, just as others do animal species. Surely, this was one of the purposes of the Garnsey Arboretum, located in Perinton, when it was founded over forty years ago in March of 1975. The Garnsey Arboretum, which is a botanical garden devoted to trees, originally started with only 11 trees, and today, it boasts over 120. Benches in this unique space invite visitors to relax and enjoy these trees and the nature of which they are a part. Casual trails invite strolling and observing. Open spaces for picnicking and free play or simple cloud gazing abound and are well maintained. Whatever the reason for your visit, do not forget to check out the trees. We have included a guide to 23 tree species native to the Eastern United States which are a part of the Garnsey Arboretum’s collection. Our guide is a great way to familiarize yourself with trees commonly found throughout New York. It can also be used for nature lovers of all ages as a game of Tree Identification Bingo. No matter how you use it, get out there in nature and enjoy! ␣

DID YOU KNOW? Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

To the farmer who thinks city people should stay in the city and not invade their precious country living I have this to say. You need to follow the same rules and laws that I have to in this state. You're not special. You don't get a pass. I worked all my life, I saved to

So you benefit from me paying taxes, then cry that we should move back into the city. I wasn't given farm property as an inheritance from my parents or grandparents either. Yes, you work and work hard, but so do I. Population is growing, it's a fact, so here's my sarcastic comment back...Either accept that your country is changing or perhaps YOU should move further out to farm. Hey, Smoky the Bear! Why don't you burn your putrid smelling garbage in your

Especially people with asthma or COPD trying to get some fresh air only to encounter remnants of your foul smelling garbage odor that has invaded their open doors and windows and permeated the entire house. I asked the Town Supervisor it if was legal to burn garbage in a back yard. His bizarre answer was 1) open burning of garbage/ trash fires is not allowed, but, 2) burning garbage/trash fires in an urn or container is allowed. Duh? Maybe we will get lucky and it will rain,

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
