HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people. Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

Fairport, N.Y. –␣A perfect composite score on the ACT exam is rare. Less than 0.15% of all test takers achieve the perfect 36. Two Fairport High School students defied the odds and achieved perfection. Seniors Benjamin Caplan and Jacob Simon recently received news that they mastered the college placement exam. ␣ “The ACT is a national college admissions examination that consists of subject area tests in English, mathematics, reading and science,” according to ACT.org. ACT.org also states that “results are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the US.” ␣ For more information, contact Jennifer Merkel, BOCES 2 communication specialist, at (585) 349-9071 or jmerkel@fairport.org

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty might upset some people, but you inevitably win more admirers for having the courage to tell the truth when others are more likely to scramble for cover. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A trusted colleague sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A welcome piece of good news helps clear the air in a family situation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new opportunity sounds promising. But watch out for any conditions that might be attached. Before making a decision, ask that each one be explained in detail. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be distracted by promises of good times, yet you ultimately reach the goals you set for yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Extreme heat can be dangerous to pets, who often suffer in silence when dealing with the consequences of extreme heat. Pet owners who take certain precautions and learn to recognize signs of a pet struggling with heat can better protect their animals from succumbing to rising temperatures.

IDEAS ON PAPER (NAPSI)—For over 40 years, works by famed sculptor Strong-Cuevas have been acclaimed and enjoyed in major museums and private collections. Now, you can have them at your fingertips. That’s because Abrams Books, the premier art book publisher, has created a lavishly illustrated coffee table sized book of 190 of her color and black-and-white drawings, “Strong-Cuevas Drawings: Ideas on Paper.” All the drawings have been thematically arranged and explore recurring themes of Strong-Cuevas’ art. Strong-Cuevas says her work expresses thoughts about universal consciousness, space and time, and inner mediation. Best known for her sculptures made from bronze, stainless steel and aluminum, StrongCuevas’ art often portrays the human head and plays with scale. Her drawings express the same themes. The book also features a foreword by noted art historian and critic Jan Garden Castro, who has written extensively about Georgia O’Keeffe, Louise Bourgeois, Maya Lin, and numerous others. Also published by Abrams is the critically acclaimed “Strong-Cuevas Sculpture: Premonitions in Retrospect,” featuring photos of her sculpture. Learn More: The book is available at Barnes & Noble and online at bn.com, Amazon.com and www.abramsbooks.com.

Have you paid attention to the amazingly beautiful flowers down Main St. in Canandaigua? The garden carts in Bloomfield? Thank you to the workers/volunteers who have kept all the flowers watered and cared for this summer. You are appreciated! As a Chaplain volunteer in the Continuing Care at Thompson Hospital, I am truly blessed to visit the elderly in the Dementia/Alzheimer’s wing. Please take the time, take your children or grandchildren to visit the elderly and show them love and that someone cares. Talk to them about their professions, and their lives. There is a great “wealth” about the elderly and the lives they have lived. It will not only bless your day, it will bless their days. know? The cars parked partially on my lawn were a dead giveaway. I pulled up and asked the lady with the baby, can you not park on my lawn? Well now my neighbor claims they have to move, because they have neighbor problems. Problems like, the dog barking, putting your overflowing tote to the road on Friday for Tuesday pick up so it leaves a mess all over? Problems like not mowing by your tree out front that still has Christmas lights on it? Problems like the cat spraying the garage and taking a dump in the flower bed? Yes that is a neighbor problem. Do you need boxes for your move or a good Realtor? Let me know! I would love to help you out so I don't have a neighbor problem.

Your Live comfortably on less Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren’t in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a longstanding trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to reenter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one’s late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that. • Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of home-related expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housing-related expenses. • Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals’ finances. That’s why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to long-term care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years.

• Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive. A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out. • Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but empty-nesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly one-third of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions. Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life.

Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month to help, please call us to volunteer. We’ll provide you with training and supplemental insurance. LIFESPAN 244-8400, ext. 142

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Bodybuilder Son Takes Steroids --DEAR DR. ROACH: My 23-year-old son is a bodybuilder, and much to my dismay, he takes steroids. I know he takes testosterone, and I don’t know what else. How will this affect him? -- Anon. ANSWER: Testosterone has many bad long-term effects, and he really should stop it. As a resident, I took care of a seemingly very healthy, very muscular 30-year-old man with terrible heart failure due to a heart attack. Many similar reports have led to suspicion that steroids taken for bodybuilding increase risk of heart attack and even sudden death. There appear to be many other long-term effects, including neuropsychiatric effects of anger and aggressive behavior. They also may reduce sperm count and affect fertility. I don’t know what else he may be taking, but I would strongly urge him to evaluate all supplements carefully. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a healthy female until I had an injury to my back. I experience pain and tingling in my right side, going down the back of my right leg. Sitting is especially painful, as is standing in one place for too long. Now the pain has started in my left side also. I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, physical therapy, epidural shots and pain pills. I also had two laminectomies (decompression surgery on the spinal canal) on L4/L5 last year, with no relief from the pain. Upon seeing another neurosurgeon, I have been told that I have some large Tarlov cysts (1 cm). There does not seem to be a great amount of information about these on the internet, plus I am not sure what information out there is accurate. One doctor on the internet is all about having surgery on them. The neurosurgeon I am seeing does not want to do surgery just yet. He says that surgery does not always bring about pain relief. Can you share some information about these Tarlov cysts and what can be done for the continued back and leg pain? Dealing with this for several years has caused me much emotional distress and depression. -- F.H. ANSWER: Tarlov cysts, also called perineurial cysts, occur along the lining of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In one study, in 500 people with MRI scans, 23 had Tarlov cysts, but only five had any symptoms from them. In this study, the cysts were drained by a needle, which relieved the pain, although the pain usually came back as the cysts refilled with fluid. I agree with your neurosurgeon that surgery on these does not guarantee success. Since you have had two surgeries and multiple types of therapies that haven’t worked, I can understand your frustration. It might be worth talking to the neurosurgeon about a trial of draining the cysts to see if that helps the symptoms. The booklet on back problems gives an overview of the causes and treatments for the most-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A GREAT WAY TO TAP INTO A HOT JOB SECTOR (NAPSI)—If you or someone you know is exploring careers that make a difference, consider the fast-growing field of professional health communication. As the health care industry continues to dominate the U.S. economy, the market demand for health communicators has grown quickly. Those with master’s degrees constitute the core of this increasingly popular profession. As the World Health Organization (WHO) put it, “Health communicators have a unique opportunity to provide meaningful input in improving and saving lives.” The Problem: Not many people know that they can get a degree in professional health communication studies or how to go about it. An Answer: To make it easier for working professionals to earn advanced credentials in the health communication field, Boston University Metropolitan College offers a fully online Master of Science in Health Communication (MSHC) program. Admission to the program, which has received global and national recognition for outstanding work, is handled on a rolling basis throughout the year. Expert’s Opinion “Health care is personal and it touches everyone,” said Leigh CurtinWilding, Program Director for Boston University’s Online Health Communication Graduate Program. “Considering today’s pace of technological advances, scientific breakthroughs, the needs of an aging population and other trends up ahead, how can consumers and patients be assured they’re making the best choices for their health? Who will advocate for the unmet needs of at-risk populations? The chances are high that a professional health communicator will be involved in this work.” Health Care Is Big According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for all health care occupations is expected to grow 18 percent through 2026 and add more jobs than any other occupational group. Professional health communication opportunities are found at federal, state and local agencies, public relations and marketing agencies, hospitals and commercial organizations, consulting firms, health insurance companies and many other areas. Added Curtin-Wilding: “There was a time when a public health degree was the gold standard for this discipline. But we live in a connected world now. The scope of modern health communication spans research, community engagement, advocacy and the use of multimedia communication, including digital tools and social marketing. Our graduates are prepared to lead the way with skills in these areas, as well as up-to-the-minute knowledge in health care policy, biology of disease, epidemiology, marketing, public and media relations, writing and health literacy.” The Boston University MSHC was the first program of its kind taught entirely online. It offers rolling, year-round enrollment for the 10-course master’s program, which can be completed in 18 months, on average. In 2016, BU introduced a new graduate certificate in Visual and Digital Health Communication. Usually completed in less than a year, the fourcourse certificate program features online studies in Social Media Strategies & Tactics that includes membership in the Mayo Clinic Social Media Network. Students also study Visual Communication in the Digital Health Age, an online course blending design theory with hands-on knowhow needed to produce visual assets such as logos, infographics and health care−specific explainer videos. Purposeful Career with Many Different Paths Joseph Krause, of Summit, N.J., earned his Master of Science in Health Communication from Boston University’s online program in 2012. His degree helped him co-found AchieveIt, a business specializing in strategy execution for organizations primarily focused in health care. “When I attended my Boston graduation, I met many of the classmates I’d previously formed relationships with during my online studies. We talked about how we planned to use our newfound degrees—I had no idea how many different directions this program could take you in, professionally,” said Krause.
