Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

The Great Vitamin Debate --DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you prescribe vitamins or treatments to enhance the immune system? -- C.N. ANSWER: I do not. In my opinion, a healthy diet makes a deficiency of a vitamin or mineral severe enough to weaken the immune system unlikely. Stress reduction (through many techniques) and good sleep are more important than supplements. People think that a daily vitamin and mineral supplement is like an insurance policy against a good diet. However, many studies have shown that taking vitamins does not, in general, lead to improvements in prevention of disease, including heart disease, cancer or infections. So I would be much more likely to recommend a better diet (especially in the fresh fruits and vegetables) than I would a supplement. Many adults have not gotten all the vaccines that are recommended, and these are a huge benefit to your immune system for those specific bacteria and viruses.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old male in generally good health. I am maybe 10 pounds overweight. I have had no heart attacks or cardiac symptoms. I walk on the treadmill for exercise. I have controlled hypertension, and have been taking simvastatin, 10 mg. My LDL is 71, very favorable. My HDL is also good, at 73. Several years back, when I started the statin, my doctor added Zetia, 10 mg. At the time, I wondered why this would be OK, and he said, “Well, there is a certain synergy there.” While I have continued taking the Zetia and suppose it might be helpful, I wonder if I need it. I say this because it is rather expensive (about $500 a year with my part D coverage). It is the only thing I take that costs me this much. My reading of the literature suggests that while Zetia might help the LDL level, there is no evidence that it improves longevity (i.e. cardiovascular). -- J.P. ANSWER: This is a confusing subject, because the theory (that lowering cholesterol protects your heart) and the evidence (that it actually works) don’t exactly align. High cholesterol certainly is associated with a higher likelihood of heart blockages, which can lead to heart attack and death. However, not all treatments that lower cholesterol reduce risk of heart attack. On the one hand, there are treatments that lower cholesterol that do help your heart. The Mediterranean diet clearly reduces risk of heart attack. Dr. Dean Ornish’s plant-based diet of very little fat and little or no meat, in combination with stress reduction and smoking cessation, actually reverses blockages in arteries in some people. Statin drugs reduce cholesterol and help prevent heart attacks, at least in people at high risk for them. On the other hand, ezetimibe (Zetia) reduces cholesterol, but like most nonstatin drugs to treat high cholesterol, it has not been proven to reduce heart disease risk. It tends to have few side effects and probably is not harmful. But you are correct that it is expensive, and like all medications, it can possibly cause harm. Being conservative about medication, I very rarely prescribe it. Studies are ongoing, and I will readdress this topic when there is more evidence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Rochester, Webster, N.Y –␣The winners have been announced, from The Andrew Langston Center for Educational Excellence ‘Focus on Education’ car giveaway to Rochester City School District seniors. On June 27, at 11:00am, on Parcel 5 in the City, the winners anxiously awaited the final winning news, while seated on a decorated stage. Each was told they had won one of the prizes, but not one of them knew who had won the new 2018 Henderson Ford Focus. They sat with sealed envelopes in hand, as Quick Lane Assistant Manager Brian Henderson called out a count down to envelope opening. ␣ ␣␣ Tayvon Jackson, graduating senior from School of the Arts, became the very excited owner of a brand new 2018 Henderson Ford Focus. Eleven additional seniors each won a $250.00 cash prize: Kayonnah Singletary (East High School), Anthony Johnson (Edison Career & Technology High School), Alexis Dygert (Rochester Early College International High School), Olivia Moore (School Without Walls), Alfredo Aponte (The School of the Arts), Anthony Jubray Jr. (Wilson Magnet High School), Keysi Morato (World of Inquiry School No. 58), Melissa Fitzgerald (Integrated Arts & Technology High School), Zaquan Jackson (Leadership Academy for Young Men), Laleyshka Cruz (Northeast College High School) and Tiona Peoples ( James Monroe High School). ␣ ␣␣ With pride, all of the sponsors were awed by the presentation of success, through these students’ lives.␣ There was representation in the top 10% of their classes, completion of AP courses, advanced band participation over four years, National Honor Society membership, Student Government involvement, sports and club participation over several years with state award recognition, community service and first-steps defined toward professional goals. ␣ ␣␣ This is the second year of the giveaway, sponsored by Henderson Ford, The Andrew Langston Center for Educational Excellence, Advantage Federal Credit Union, Attorney Van Henri White, WDKX, 13 WHAM ABC, WUHF FOX Rochester, and CW Rochester. Believing that

every minute matters with scholastics, these sponsors developed a way to reinforce successful student behaviors – passing grades, attendance, timeliness, participation on a school team or club, downloading the RCSD link, finishing a financial literacy online program, and communicating why graduating is important. ␣ ␣␣ Henderson Ford President Randy Henderson stated, “If this giveaway changes one life, it is worth the year of work and investment.␣ On behalf of Henderson Ford, to the Rochester City School District Class of 2018, we are proud of YOU!” About␣The Andrew Langston Center for Educational Excellence ‘Focus on Education’ Car and Cash Giveaway ␣ ␣ ␣ Henderson Ford, The Andrew Langston Center for Educational Excellence (non-profit, 501 C3),␣Advantage Federal Credit Union, Attorney Van Henri White, WDKX, 13 WHAM ABC, WUHF FOX Rochester, and CW Rochester are a group of organizations and businesses which share a common mission to help elevate the graduation rate in the Rochester City School District and around the City of Rochester. They have teamed together, since 2016, to reward student behaviors leading to success:␣ academics, attendance, timeliness, participation, connecting with school resources, developing financial literacy skills, and sharing messages promoting graduation. These behaviors earn the RCSD seniors 13 opportunities to enter the car giveaway, including a cash prize scholarship awarded to a senior from each participating school.␣ ␣

IDEAS ON PAPER (NAPSI)—For over 40 years, works by famed sculptor Strong-Cuevas have been acclaimed and enjoyed in major museums and private collections. Now, you can have them at your fingertips. That’s because Abrams Books, the premier art book publisher, has created a lavishly illustrated coffee table sized book of 190 of her color and black-and-white drawings, “Strong-Cuevas Drawings: Ideas on Paper.” All the drawings have been thematically arranged and explore recurring themes of Strong-Cuevas’ art. Strong-Cuevas says her work expresses thoughts about universal consciousness, space and time, and inner mediation. Best known for her sculptures made from bronze, stainless steel and aluminum, StrongCuevas’ art often portrays the human head and plays with scale. Her drawings express the same themes.

Behaviors that may help you reduce your risk for colorectal cancer Colorectal cancer is a formidable foe. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Colorectal cancer is similarly lethal in Canada, where the Canadian Cancer Society reports it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and the third leading among women. Some risks for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual’s control. For example, the CCS notes that a personal or family history of polyps in the colon, rectum or both significantly increases a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by gene mutations, causes polyps to develop in the lining of the colon, rectum or both. Since Lynch syndrome is inherited, there is nothing men and women can do to reduce their risk of developing it. Research into colorectal cancer is ongoing, making it difficult for doctors to say certain behaviors or approaches are certain to reduce a person’s risk of developing the disease. But there are certain things individuals can do that might help save them from falling victim to colorectal cancer. • Get screened. The CDC notes that colorectal cancer usually begins when polyps form in the colon or rectum. If they go undetected, these polyps may turn into cancer. Screening can detect polyps early so they are found before they develop into cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening using high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, or FOBT; sigmoidoscopy; or colonoscopy for men and women between the ages of 50 and 75. • Embrace physical activity. While men and women who are physically active can still get colorectal cancer, the CCS notes

Did You Know? According to Age in Place, nearly 60 percent of available senior income is being spent on housing and healthcare, and those expenditures do not include transportation or food. The rising costs of many necessities can make it difficult for seniors to make ends meet and, as a result, certain money-saving measures are often necessary.

Phsyical activity may help men and women reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer. that people who live sedentary lifestyles are at a higher risk of developing the disease than those who are active. • Maintain a healthy weight. According to the CCS, people who are overweight or obese have greater incidence rates of colorectal cancer than those who maintain healthy weights. The CCS also notes that men with a high body mass index, or BMI, seem to be most at risk of developing colorectal cancer. • Limit alcohol consumption. The CDC notes that some studies have shown that limiting alcohol consumption may reduce a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is a devastating disease, but men and women who embrace healthy behaviors may be able to lower their risks.

GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS Cash: Cash may seem impersonal, but couples tying the knot will no doubt appreciate an infusion of cash after saying “I do.” According to The Knot, the average wedding cost more than $35,000 in 2016. Even couples whose parents foot the bill for their weddings will appreciate having some extra money on hand that they can use on their honeymoons or put toward a home.

While passing through Dansville last Friday, we experienced alternator trouble with a 3-day old alternator! We're grateful to Van Hyning Automotive for replacing the alternator and communicating with the garage who originally replaced it. You rescued our weekend and family reunion. The people of Dansville are fortunate to have such capable mechanics! Thanks to our employers, Steve and Kim for the amazing lunch supplied by Tom Wahl’s Food Truck last week. It is always a summer event we all look forward too. GVPS is a great place to work with many

special perks! Thanks again Steve and Kim. Your GVPS family This past weekend my husband and I were out for a ride on our Harley. We never have a plan when we leave our house except to stop for lunch somewhere different. Some of our stops have been the Glenn Iris Inn in Letchworth Park and Bristol Harbor Golf Course. The views we have seen are amazing. I love to see all the different homes and the gardens and landscaping people take pride in. Letchworth is a beautiful park that has so much to offer. The hills and valleys around us are beautiful. We are

attempts. When you ghost a small rental business (that didn’t even require a deposit) it takes away from someone that actually wanted it. You own a clothing business and you wouldn't like it if someone did that to you! You're the reason rental businesses require deposits.

Next time you make a reservation for something (especially at a small business) have the decency to contact them and let them know you want to cancel. It is extremely rude to book something and then ignore confirmation

Have you ever returned something to the store? Ever wondered what happened to that item afterwards? So many assume it gets put right back on the shelf, but that actually rarely happens. State laws dictate that many (read: most) returned items be trashed. Socks and underwear? Garbage. Any food item? Trash. Any over-the-

so lucky to live in such a beautiful state. If you have the opportunity and time, take a drive outside of your neighborhood and see what you’re missing. I love summer in NY. Thank you to the folks who have local fruit/veggie stands, to share the benefits from their work growing all the fresh produce. Another benefit of small town living!!! Thanks to Coach Jackie for a wonderful U9 Summer Soccer season. The girls progressed beautifully and by the end of the season were a real team! It was a treat to see them come out of their shells, face fears, learn skills

counter meds and vitamins? Dumpster. Swim wear? Gone. The list goes on and on... So if you ever complain about retail waste, know that much of this is the customer's fault. Be sure of what you're buying. Don't purchase a clothing item in 3 sizes to try on at home and return what doesn't fit. That return will probably end up in a landfill with countless other items purchased and returned by thoughtless customers. Think first, and shop consciously. But FREEDOM DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO DO AS YOU PLEASE. It does however, give me the right to be inside my home and not have to

and develop a team bond. Thank you for all your hard work and patience. - Appreciative Parents To whoever planted the gorgeous sunflower field on the way out of Avon, thank you! It’s a bright spot we look forward to passing every day.

listen to bombs going off all around me. I have the right to go to sleep when I so choose, not when you decide to stop making noise that is so loud it’s heard inside of my home with the windows closed. Whether it's fireworks, loud music or whatever else you so thoughtlessly impose upon your neighbors, you are violating my right to have peace and quiet inside of my own home. Since you don’t care how your actions impact others, I won’t feel bad for calling the cops in order to protect MY RIGHT TO BE FREE FROM YOUR THOUGHTLESS AND ILLEGAL ACTIVITY. There are noise and firework laws.

“ That tree w hose leaves are trembling: it is yearning for something. That tree so lovely to see acts as if it w ants to flow er: it is yearning for something.” - Diego Hurtado de M endoza, 1395 HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There might still be some uncertainty about the decision you made. But a quick check of the facts should reassure you that you’re doing the right thing. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The tidy Taurean needs to be a little more flexible about accepting some changes to those carefully made plans. You might be pleasantly surprised by what follows. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Consider stepping away from your concentrated focus on your new project for a bit so you can get some perspective on what you’ve done and where you plan to take it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) The understandably angry Crab might not want to accept the reason why someone might have tried to hurt you. But at least you’ll have an insight into why it happened. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) There might be some facts you still need to know before leaping onto center stage. Best to move carefully at this time so that you can observe what’s happening around you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to expand your outlook by getting out and around, whether you do some long-range traveling or just explore the great things to see closer to home. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your wise counsel continues to be needed as that family situation works itself out. Meanwhile, the decisions you made on your job begin to pay off quite nicely. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your job situation brightens thanks to all your hard work. Now, spend some time repairing a personal relationship you might have neglected for too long. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects favor action in the workplace. Line up your facts and show your superiors why you’re the one they’re looking for. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your hard work pays off on the job. Personal relationships also can benefit from more of your time and attention. Spend the weekend with loved ones. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Early feedback on your project might be disappointing. But don’t be discouraged. Use it to make needed adjustments, then submit it to your superiors again. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Flattery could lure the otherwise sensible Fish into making an unwise decision. Be careful. All that praise might be an attempt to reel you in before you can learn the facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful sense of who you are. You are a shining example to others, helping them believe in themselves and what they can do. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Honeybees flitting from flower to flower is one of the first signs that warm weather has arrived. Honeybees are a welcome presence in the garden, pollenating plants and contributing to local honey supplies. Despite their importance in the ecosystem, honeybees are in grave danger. In 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama created a task force comprised of various agencies to address the growing issue of rapidly diminishing honeybees and other pollinating insects. This initiative was a response to reports from American beekeepers indicating hive deaths have been on the rise, gravely affecting the honeybee population. Honeybees pollinate many fruit trees, nut plants and vegetables, playing a crucial role for many nations’ food industries. In addition to government involvement and honeybee conservation methods designed by environmental agencies, there are many things that regular citizens and homeowners can do to protect honeybees this summer.

DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

PLAYING MOTHERHOOD FOR LAUGHS (NAPSI)—If any of America’s estimated 74 million kids are yours, an uproarious new book may be for you (and make a great gift for any mom you know). As you may have found, parenthood is not for the fainthearted. It’s often a mayhem marathon filled with exhausting days, punctuated by public outbursts, poison control phone calls, and poop (everywhere). But you’re not alone. About The Book The book, “Parentally Incorrect: True Tales by Real Moms About the F**ked-Up Things Their Kids Have Done” (HCI), comes straight from Tracey Tee and Shayna Ferm’s irreverent mom-to-mom comedy tour, The Pump and Dump Show. Created mostly from cards by women across the country who confessed the craziest, most exasperating, unforgettable things their kids have done, it also features Sad Cake moments-those little bummers that deflate you; Stump the Breeder trivia questions; Awesome MOMents drinking games; and Lies We Tell Ourselves Before We Have Kids. The idea behind the book is to help parents everywhere realize that the insanity that can happen is in no way a reflection of their worth or skills. Where To Find It It’s available in stores everywhere and on Amazon at https://amzn.to/2w3vzlZ.

Fill your openings fast by placing your ad in the Employment Section. Call 226-8111, 343-3111, 393-1111 or 637-5100 HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS DINNER Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.
