HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

Safety renovations for seniors’ homes Feeling safe and secure at home is a priority for any homeowner. But safety is of particular concern for aging men and women who are at greater risk of being involved in accidents at home than younger men and women. Harvard Health Publishing says that accidents at home are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. The chances for fatalities increases as one ages, and by age 75 and older, men and women are almost four times as likely to die in a home accident as people a decade younger. As people age, their balance, eyesight and general physical abilities can begin to diminish. Furthermore, a fall or incident that may only bruise a younger individual can cause more serious breaks or damage for seniors, resulting in potentially lengthy recovery times. The Home Care Assistance organization says that one million elderly people are admitted to the emergency room for injuries every year. People concerned about the safety of their homes or the homes of their aging loved ones can retrofit such properties to make them safer. Falls According to The Senior Social Club, which offers care and community services to seniors, falls are the most common accidents affecting seniors. One out of every three seniors aged 65 and older falls at least once a year. In addition to working with doctors to improve mobility and modify medications that may cause unsteadiness, changes around the home can help. Grab bars placed in bathrooms and high-traffic areas can help seniors stay more stable when changing from sitting to standing positions.

“ We acquire the strength w e overcom e.” – Ralph Waldo Em erson

Potential tripping hazards should be assessed. Area rugs without nonskid backings, clutter on floors, extension cords that extend into walking areas, and uneven flooring pose tripping hazards. Anti-slip coatings can be added to floors to reduce the risk of tripping. Poorly lit staircases and entryways also can contribute to falls. Consider the installation of motion-activated lighting so that dim areas can be automatically brightened when necessary. A nightlight or LED lights placed near molding can help guide seniors to the bathroom during midnight visits. Physical limitations Arthritis can impede seniors’ ability to turn on and off appliances, water faucets or handle certain kitchen tools. Kitchen and bathroom modifications can include the installation of ergonomic and user-friendly handles and spigots. Task lighting can make it easier to prepare meals, and appliances that automatically turn off after a certain period of time can be a safety feature for forgetful individuals. Reorganize kitchen cabinets to make commonly used items as accessible as possible. Smart Homes Friends or family members can have greater control over seniors’ homes by installing smart home systems. This way they can remotely adjust thermostats, control lights, view cameras, engage locks or alarm systems, and much more without having to be at the home. This can allow seniors to maintain their independence while offering peace of mind to their loved ones. Certain home modifications can reduce seniors’ injury risk.

Keep Winter Energy Bills in Check (Family Features) As w inter temperatures drop, the potential for higher utility bills goes up. Taking steps ahead of the cold season can help you trim costs and make your home more energy efficient, keeping those utility bills in check even as the w inter w eather rages. Before w inter w eather sets in for your part of the country, take some time to assess your home for potential problem areas and improvements that can help low er your energy costs. Lighting. Though turning off unneeded lights is a smart strategy any time of year, it’s especially helpful during the w inter months w hen utility expenses can add up. New technology lets you manage your lights aw ay from home using an app on your smartphone. Water heaters. Heat isn’t the only system that gets an extra w orkout come w inter. Cooler house temperatures may require w ater heaters to w ork harder, so ensuring you have a model w ell-suited to your family’s year-round needs is key. In fact, heating w ater is the second source of energy use in the residential home after space heating and cooling, w ith standard electric w ater heaters costing the average homeow ner $585 every year to operate. Thermostat. A programmable thermostat is easy to install and saves energy (and money) by automatically adjusting to predetermined temperature settings. Air leaks. An airtight house is critical to managing your heatrelated expenses. Sealing cracks around those w indow s and doors, and other leak-prone areas such as the basement and attic, w ill help keep heat inside and costs dow n.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

INSULATED SIDING CAN KEEP YOUR HEAT W HERE IT BELONGS -- INSIDE! If you w ere hit by the “ polar vortex” that brought subzero temperatures to more than half of the continental U.S., it w as a good reminder that the best w ay to stay w arm w as to dress in layers. The same is true for houses. Today’s homeow ners looking for w ays to improve their home’s energy performanc e are increasingly choosing insulated siding -- vinyl siding w ith rigid foam insulation that is laminated or permanently attached to the panel. Think of it as adding an extra layer to w ard off the cold. M ost exterior w alls have insulation in betw een the w all studs but allow significant energy loss through the studs themselves, w hic h are poor insulators. This is called “ thermal bridging.” Insulated siding improves energy effic ienc y by reducing thermal bridging. Like a blanket, it is continuous insulation over the studs, w hic h helps homes stay w arm in w inter and cool in summer. Designed to reach higher levels of rigidity, stability and thermal resistanc e -- “ R-value” -insulated siding is subject to an array of regulations, standards and third-party quality assurance tests that determine how it is manufactured and marketed. Due to that rigor, a number of building and energy-efficiency programs have recognized that insulated siding qualifies as home insulation. In addition, it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a building product that c an help qualify homes under the Energy Star Qualified Homes Program.

To the students and parents of Attica bus 111, Thank you for the cards and gifts for Christmas. The homemade chocolate covered pretzels are very good. Thank you. Mr. Jeff Thank you so much to the Livonia Fire Department for pumping out my flooded cellar and to the Volunteer Ambulance crew who took my 18 month old grandson to the hospital when he had a serious case of croup. You saved his life. We in Livonia are so fortunate to have such great people who serve in our community, especially the firefighters and ambulance crews. Keep up the good work and a big THANK YOU! I want to thank the couple who helped me and the 3 kids I had in my vehicle when I accidentally crashed my car on Union Street in

Ogden. You stopped to see if we were all ok and allowed the kids and me to sit in your blue Jeep in the heat to stay warm. I really appreciate your help and your kind hearts to allow us to stay warm on this bitter cold day on New Year’s Eve. I wish I received your names and address to thank you personally. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

donors. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-to-day operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special I want to give a huge thank you thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are to the person or persons that found my Discover credit card in blessed to live in such a caring community. the Aldi's parking lot on 12/27/ 17. I almost had a heart attack when I couldn't find it when I went to Walmart. I drove back to Aldi's and low and behold someone had found it. I will never put it in my pocket again. I wish you the best of 2018, I'm so grateful. room to ease my car backwards and across the street to a parking lot. He held my arm as we carefully crossed the slippery road to his car, and then drove me to my appointment a few blocks away! God is great--and so were you, Chris!

Slipping and sliding, unable to get my car under control to make it up the icy incline on Gravel Road in W. Webster, several drivers sat waiting too close behind me or passed by as the light turned green a few times. Feeling hopeless and helpless being late for an appointment, my prayers were answered with the The Teresa House Board of arrival of an angel who gave his Directors, Staff and Volunteers name as Chris Brown. He was able would like to send many thanks to to stop the traffic, giving him all of our 2017 Annual Campaign

elsewhere should be built instead of having this in a residential area? To the Bus Driver responding to the post about lights flashing confusion: I think you misread my post. I wasn't speeding up to the bus. I was slowing down waiting for the reds to come on. I was confused and not sure what to do as they did not come on until I was at the front fender of the bus. I am asking that bus drivers don't Is there anyone within earshot of wait until the last second to turn the [local] shooting range that is on the reds. And I was disgusted disturbed by the daily shooting? that the blame was then put on Does everyone realize that this type me when they beeped the horn at of noise pollution MUST be me. They did not use that horn to disclosed when selling your house or warn the students as they were you could be liable? Maybe after dropping off kids as the bus was decades of use, an indoor facility on not even stopped yet. And I never the [local college] campus or said anything about my "precious"

time. I was not in a hurry, only confused. Next time I'll stop at the yellow lights....only to get rearended I'm sure. To the older "gentleman" whom we were unfortunate enough to sit by at our favorite restaurant. Not everyone appreciates hearing how you "severed the aorta" of a deer you shot from your tree stand. My wife and I had to sit there and listen as you described what was evidently a thrilling experience for you, all the while eating our vegetarian lunch that is usually a highlight of our week. I would expect this behavior from a twenties-something guy in [a fast food restaurant]--not a senior citizen in a sit-down establishment, where I assure you

that no one wants to hear about you bagging a trophy buck. Since you were the only one talking at your table, I can only assume that even your family was annoyed. Have a little class, hit the fast food joint, or better yet, stay home and eat by yourself. It is absolutely incredulous that if someone were to be caught by a police officer throwing a candy wrapper out the car window that they would be subject to a $350 fine in New York State, yet people in a supposedly upscale neighborhood in this town routinely place loose trash and recyclables out in 30 MPH winds to turn their neighborhood into a ‘royal’ mess. Is there no town ordinance that can address this issue?

Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

How far you go in life depends on your being tender w ith the young, compassionate w ith the aged, sympathetic w ith the striving and tolerant of the w eak and strong. Because someday in your life you w ill have been all of these. - George Washington Carver

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

CONSIDERING OPTIONS Amid changing expectations, it is more desirable than ever for families to have frank discussions about body disposition and funerals. As more Americans (50.2%) have, for the first time, chosen cremation over burial, those making choices for themselves must inform other family members of their wishes. With so many options available (such as body donation and “green burial”), there is no longer a single script to follow when it comes to deciding how the body will be disposed of and how the deceased will be remembered and celebrated. As funeral norms change, there is more room for creativity. In the end, it’s important to impress upon family members what the people planning their own funerals want and the reasons behind these wishes. We understand that making the many decisions which come at a time of loss can be difficult. We offer our support by providing you with options as you consider making immediate arrangements. To learn more about the funeral and memorial services we offer, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “It is possible to provide security against other ills, but as far as death is concerned, we men live in a city without walls.” ~ Epicurus

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

Cleason Jay Leasure

Richard F. Holland

December 31, 2017

January 3, 2018

Rochester/Conway, SC: Passed away on December 31, 2017, at age 84, near his home in Conway, SC surrounded by family members and friends. Predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Jean (Pesce) Leasure and granddaughter Jennifer Leasure. Survived by children; Cleason Jay (Eva) Leasure III, Richard (Jeanne) Leasure, Luellen (Stan Crane) Leasure, and Jeanne (Steve Levin) Leasure; grandchildren, Ryan (Nikki) Graham, Cleason Jay (Kathryn Yeager) Leasure IV, Jason (Margarita) Graham, Maggie (Andy Webster) Leasure, Jack (Kelly) Leasure, Kasey Leasure, Ben Leasure, Samantha Leasure, Anna Leasure, Benjamin Leatherwood, Madeline Levin, and Ava Levin; great grandchildren, Dorothy Leasure, Isabella Graham, Ernie Leasure, Maeda Leasure, Oscar Leasure, Arlo Leasure, Ciaran Graham, Mary Jane Leasure, Bridget Leasure, Evelyn Graham, and Beauden Leasure; siblings, Marylou Leasure Judy and Nancy Leasure Bauer. Jay spent over 60 years in the restaurant business getting his start washing dishes at the age of 10 in his father’s restaurant in Meadville, PA. He was on his own supporting himself at the young age of 13, going to school during the day and working in restaurants after school. He later met his wife Jean at the Country Club Diner on East Avenue in Rochester in the early 1950’s; Jay a cook, and Jean a waitress. They fell in love, married and began their career together owning and operating four Rochester area restaurants including the Brookview Diner on West Henrietta Road, which they opened in 1960, and then opening Jay’s Diner on West Henrietta Road in 1966, today still a popular hangout for University of Rochester students. In 1989, Jay and Jean opened J.J. Leasure’s restaurant, motel and banquet facility in Lakeville and then later purchased George E. France (“George’s”) Restaurant in Lima in 1994 from their good friend George France. France wanted the Leasures to take over the business when he retired knowing that in their care, George’s would continue to thrive in the local community which it has served for decades. Throughout his career in the restaurant business, he took on leadership roles in the New York State Restaurant Association serving as Vice President and President for the Rochester chapter during the 1970’s, and awarded the NYSRA Silver Spoon award in 2001, an award for successful restauranteurs who were not born with a silver spoon, but who earned the admiration and respect of his or her peers through hard work and dedication to the industry and community. From humble beginnings, himself, he frequently offered a helping hand to those in need, hiring several employees from a local alcohol recovery unit to help them get back on their feet. He was also known to donate equipment, food and time to numerous church and community events, and sponsored countless school and recreational sports teams over the years. He was even known to help underprivileged kids with expenses related to their school sports, and perfect strangers in need. Jay was also a Rotary Club member for several years, and served his country in the Army Reserves as a mess hall cook, and Sergeant, honorably discharged in 1960. Jay finally retired in 2005, but his passion for the business continued in to retirement as he mentored young restaurant owners, and was still talking about how to be successful in the restaurant business just weeks before his passing. He worked very hard throughout his life adopting the saying that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. In all, Jay was a successful restauranteur, an avid sports fan, loved classic cars and was known for his sense of humor, generosity, humility and great spirit. His was a life well lived and worthy of admiration. Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 15th, 5-7 pm at Merton H Kays Funeral Home, 59 Monroe Street, Honeoye Falls. Funeral mass to be held on Tuesday, January 16th, 11 am at St. Louis Church, 64 South Main Street, Pittsford, NY. A private burial will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Geneseo, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross., 50 Prince Street, Rochester, NY 14607. “Nine of every ten people improve on acquaintance…” ~ Frank Swinnerton Although we will never know the identity of Swinnerton’s acquaintances, we can readily see the truth in his statement. We may not react favorably to everyone when first we meet them. Some people, in fact, may strike us initially as being quite unlikeable. When we get to know these people better, for whatever reason, we discover hidden qualities that we like and admire. We find that their unpleasant aspects are not really too objectionable after all. It is wise to give every new acquaintance a chance to improve in our estimation. You can spare your loved ones the burden of making painful decisions under stress by making your own funeral arrangements prior to need. Ask us to explain the advantages.

Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible.

In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day.

1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Non-Stop Music Only He Can Hear

www.conesuslakesmiles.com 6133 Big Tree Road, Livonia, NY 14487 • 585-346-2320

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I hear music playing in my head at all times. I can’t stop it, even if I’m reading, having a conversation or being active. It’s there when I wake up in the night or in the morning. Even if I consciously stop it and try to hear only the ambient sounds around me, the music always comes back. Is this indicative of any major problems? I am a very healthy 64year-old male, and this is annoying. It has been going on for most of my life. I wonder if a psychiatrist could help. The only prescription I take is zolpidem for sleep, but I would consider any meds that would help stop this. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are several medical reasons to have music in your head. One is called “musical ear syndrome,” which is a type of hallucination most commonly associated with hearing loss. Another is associated with psychiatric disease, especially obsessivecompulsive disorder, but also with schizophrenia or mood disorders. However, my experience is that there are many, many normal people with no psychiatric illness who have music playing in their head almost all the time or all the time. Many people have had a song stuck in their head (often called an “earworm”), but a few people have this continuously. I had one patient in whom this was a major source of distress, and in that case, it appeared to be related to the use of an antidepressant. Solving anagrams and reading are supposed to help, but in your case I am almost sure that would be temporary. Sometimes playing the music that is in your head can stop it. There are a few case reports of treatment with medication (such as carbamazepine) being effective, but sometimes reassurance that this is almost normal makes it easier to deal with. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts. A recent MRI scan showed that they are less than 2 cm and have been stable for a year. My doctor tells me these are benign and don’t need any more follow-up. Could these cysts become cancerous later on? -- K. ANSWER: The medical term “cyst” means any fluid-filled, walled structure. They can occur in practically any anatomic location you can think of. In the pancreas, there are several types of cysts, as well as pseudocysts (fluid collections, usually as a result of pancreatitis, that develop a wall after some weeks), and cystic neoplasms, which have the potential to become cancerous. You didn’t tell me how you were diagnosed. Very often, these are found incidentally when a CT scan is obtained for some other reason. In this case, when there are no symptoms present, the only concern is whether they can grow and cause symptoms later on, or worse yet, could become cancerous. Since pancreatic cancer is justifiably feared, I understand your reasons for asking the question. Fortunately, I agree with your doctor completely. The likelihood of a small cyst (your largest cyst is 1.4 cm) being cancer is less than 5 percent. Since it hasn’t changed in a year of follow-up, your risk for cancer is very, very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT

Be patient. Lifting too much weight or pushing yourself too hard on the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine will increase your risk of injury. This is especially true for men and women working out for the first time or after lengthy stretches of inactivity. Men and women who are elderly, inactive and/ or overweight are likely to suffer from poor balance because their muscles are weak. Those muscles can be strengthened over time, but remain patient and stick to light weight during initial workouts so lack of balance does not lead to pain or injury. Take the same approach with aerobic exercise to prevent muscle strains and pulls. Increase weight and the intensity of cardiovascular exercises as muscles gradually strengthen and become accustomed to exercise.

CARE CONSULTATIONS Our professional staff is dedicated to helping you and your family navigate your journey with Alzheimer’s disease. During a care consultation, we can help assess your needs and discuss care planning, home safety and other concerns.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

HEALTH SAYINGS AND THEIR ORIGINS “Fit as a Fiddle.” The phrase “fit as a fiddle” is often used to describe someone who is very healthy and full of energy. But what does fitness have to do with an instrument, anyway? Actually, very little. According to The Phrase Finder, “fit” didn’t originally mean healthy. It was actually used to represent the words “suitable and seemly.” Therefore, something that is fit as a fiddle would mean it was suitable for its purpose. Now “fit” frequently refers to one’s physical shape, and the phrase has evolved.

APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

“Survival of the fittest.” Again, the word “fittest” initially did not represent physical strength or well-being. Rather, in this phrase, attributed to Herbert Spencer and later to Charles Darwin, fittest referred to those who were best suited to their environment, or more plainly, those who were best able to survive. Today, it can mean anyone who is able to rise above the odds against them or beat the competition. “Strong as an ox.” The idiom “strong as an ox” has long represented a person who is unusually strong and able to persevere. Because oxen are large beasts of burden that were used instead of horses by American settlers before railroads were created, anyone compared to an ox would have to be someone capable of strong physical labor and ability. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Many believe this phrase to be a helpful rhyming device to remember to eat healthy food to maintain good physical health. However, according to Snopes, the first known version of this proverb comes from Wales in 1866 and stated, “eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Other sources trace the phrase to ancient Rome. Apples can have many health benefits, but no research has confirmed that eating an apple daily will safeguard individuals from any particular illness. A 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine did find that people who ate an apple required fewer prescription medications than those who did not.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD The dawn of a new year represents a chance to start anew and set goals for the months ahead. New Year’s resolutions are often made to provide the motivation people need to improve their lives and make a new year as productive and happy as possible. While people who make New Year’s resolutions fully intend to realize those goals, few actually stick to the game plan. According to researchers at the University of Scranton, just 8 percent of people who make their New Year’s resolutions actually achieve those resolutions. While that might make it seem like the odds are against men and women who have resolved to improve their lives in the year ahead, adults can realize their goals for the new year and beyond.

Girl Scouts of WNY Announces Autumn Jeffery as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout By Susan Cook

Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Autumn Jeffery of Caledonia, NY as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Jeffery’s project was to build two Little Free Libraries to support the community, which has insufficient access to a public library. Caledonia Library has limited hours and the nearby town of York does not have a public library at all. Jeffery researched the project and collected donations of building materials and books, as well as met with local businesses to find a location to put Little Free Library locations. Jeffery sorted the donated books, built and assembled the libraries herself, installing one at the Cal-Mum Elementary School and the other at the York Elementary School where she gave a speech about citizenship. Jeffery stated, “I am proud to be a Gold Award Girl Scout. But to me, the real reward in all of this is that I have made a positive impact in my community and I have helped others.” Jeffery has been a Girl Scout for 13 years. She will receive her Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, at the Gold Award Ceremony in June. The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something that a girl can be passionate about – in thought, deed, and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be ongoing or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind

each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project. The Girl Scout submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause they are addressing. To learn more about the Girl Scouts of Western New York please visit gswny.org.

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Make A Reservation Nothing is worse than taking a client to dinner and having to wait to get a table. Once the invitation is extended, make a reservation. Even if the client cannot make it, it’s possible to cancel the reservation. When choosing a restaurant, look for one with an established reputation, and preferably one you have patronized in the past. Avoid restaurants with loud music or ones that are considered trendy, as such locales are often louder and less conducive to conversation. Another thing to discuss when making the reservation are the seating arrangements. If the restaurant is known for its views, reserve a table with a great view and make sure the clients get the best seats at the table. Clients should not be looking at the wall or sitting in a busy location, such as outside the kitchen or near the bar or restroom.
