Save on Gas Fill up with a lower-octane gasoline. Buy the lowest grade or octane of gasoline that is appropriate for your car. Unless your car requires premium gasoline, filling up your car with high-octane fuel is a waste of money. That pricey premium fuel won’t boost your car’s fuel economy or performance in the least, so skip it. If you’re not sure what grade of fuel works best for your car, open up your owner’s manual and take a look. As long as your engine doesn’t knock or ping when you fuel up with regular unleaded, you’re good to drive on this much cheaper gas. Passing on pricey premium gasoline could save you hundreds of dollars a year.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

How seniors can preserve their brains Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe. It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage. Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults.
Doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles can keep the brain sharp.
ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also may be beneficial. • Hit the gym. Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body.
A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s disease.
• Supplement with DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and mono-unsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take.
In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies.
• Challenge the mind. Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines. Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain.
• Start exercising the brain early on. A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45year-old participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion. • Read more books. Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Thigh Numbness Likely Due to Trapped Nerve --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 65-year-old male who has developed a lack of sensation in the lateral front half of my right thigh. The numbness involves strictly the skin. There is no loss of strength, function or balance in my leg. My gait is normal, although I find that if I go on a long walk, the skin will begin to “tingle.” When I went to an orthopedic surgeon, he suspected that the condition could be caused by a disc problem. Although an X-ray did show some stenosis, it was not definitive. I suspect I caused the problem by years of sleeping on my right side in a curled-up position, resulting in entrapment of the nerve. The orthopedist, however, says he generally sees this condition only in obese people, which I am not. How likely is it that my condition is of spinal origin rather than an entrapped nerve? If the condition can resolve itself gradually by avoiding activities that contribute to the problem, what does “gradually” mean? Do stretching exercises help relieve the entrapment? -- J.C.B. ANSWER: What you are describing is meralgia paresthetica, the compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which can be compressed as it passes under the inguinal ligament, exactly as you described. Your orthopedist is correct that this condition is more common in the overweight or obese; however, I have seen it in both people who are losing weight and people of normal, stable weight. It is more common in conjunction with diabetes, and it has been reported after long-distance walking and cycling. Because of the area involved in your numbness, it is very likely to be meralgia paresthetica and not spinal in origin. It does usually resolve, but it does so over the course of months, typically. Stretching would seem to make sense, but as far as I know, it hasn’t been shown to work. If it isn’t getting better, an injection into the nerve usually is effective. This is commonly done by an anesthesiologist or a painmanagement specialist. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you please give me some information on Elhers-Danlos syndrome? My daughter and two granddaughters have it. -- E.E.H. ANSWER: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is actually a group of uncommon genetic disorders, with very stretchy skin, flexible joints and tissue fragility as common features. There are six different kinds of Ehlers-Danlos, and each is different in regard to what tissues and organs it most affects. Most are caused by mutations in genes for collagen and related structural proteins. They can be inherited or not (in which case they are new mutations). Flexible joints (often but wrongly called “double-jointed”) and excessively stretchy skin are almost universal in EDS. The excess joint movement can cause dislocations and chronic joint pain resembling fibromyalgia. Other commonly associated conditions include prolapse of the mitral valve, hernias and, in the vascular type of EDS, aneurisms. The prognosis in EDS depends to a great extent on the subtype. I would suggest that you go with your daughter and granddaughters to their doctor (if they agree) to learn more about their particular type. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. FRUITS & VEGETABLES MAY LOWER RISK OF PAD
GREAT GREAT SMILES SMILES

Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness. When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

DID YOU KNOW? Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: There was panic in the streets last weekend as a warning was sent declaring that Hawaii was in imminent danger of an incoming ballistic missile. What do you think of the response to the error? • Unbelievable! How could one person have such control? • Mistakes happen, there should have been better safeguards in place to make sure this kind of error couldn’t occur. • There needs to be a thorough investigation and those in charge should be held accountable

BRIDAL GOWN CLEARANCE SALE TO BENEFIT ROCHESTER COMMUNITY Former Bridal Boutique Property Manager Donates Seized Gowns By Rene Spallina What does a man do with more than 500 wedding gowns? The Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester (FGGR) will be hosting a huge bridal gown clearance sale at the former Alfred Angelo Bridal store at 2544 Ridgeway Avenue in Rochester, NY from 10:00am-5:00pm on Saturday, January 27th and Sunday, January 28th. More than 500 designer bridal gowns – some with a retail price over $1,000 – will be discounted up to 75% during the sale. The sale also includes Mother of the Bride, Bridesmaid, and Flower Girl dresses and wedding accessories. The donated dresses were the result of a bankruptcy settlement between Alfred Angelo Bridal and Alloco Real Estate Management, the management company that owns Erie Canal Commons shopping plaza where the former bridal store was located when Alfred Angelo abruptly closed all of its stores in July of last year. “I would much rather help the community than try to find a buyer for the inventory,” said Joe Alloco, president of Alloco Real Estate Management. “I heard about Fairy Godmothers and thought they were a great fit for these dresses.” All dresses will be 60 percent off retail price on Saturday and 75 percent off retail on Sunday. 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale will go to FGGR. About Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester: Rene Spallina and Cynthia Jackson were two moms with a vision - The Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester - which was realized in January of 2004. After seeing a story about a program that
provided prom dresses for financially challenged high school girls, they set out to create their own program in the Rochester community. Since then the Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester have dressed an average of 500 young ladies a year for a total of over 5,000 young ladies. The charity has continued to grow, now reaching over 200 high schools and special programs in the Upstate New York region and beyond. Their mission is quite simple and that is to make sure that every young lady in the community has the opportunity to experience their high school prom feeling like a princess and that they are the most important in the world if only for that moment. Selfesteem and inner strength is what we advocate for each and every young lady by providing them with a personal shopper and a “Cinderella” like experience at our annual Prom Dress Fair. For more information about Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester, please visit their website www.fairygodmothersrochester.com.

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. - George Bernard Shaw
Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
ASSISTING WITH DEATH Just as a “birth doula” provides physical and emotional assistance during pregnancy and childbirth, a “death doula” provides support to the dying and their families during all the stages of death. A doula, which is the Greek word for “woman who serves,” may discuss a dying person’s wishes and concerns, organize vigils, coach relatives on the signs of dying, organize paperwork, run errands, create memory books, and even help plan funerals. Doulas are fast gaining popularity as efforts grow to improve end-of-life experiences for terminal patients and their families. Doulas provide a way to bridge the gap in time and resources that busy hospices cannot always provide, particularly when death is not sufficiently close to qualify for hospice care. A doula gets to know the person beyond his or her illness. He or she listens to their pain, shares in their interests, or sits silently without agenda. Doulas provide resources, education, and companionship for the dying and their caregivers as they fill in gaps in hospice care and medical support systems. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. “I don’t know who my grandfather was. I am much more concerned to know what his grandson will be.....” ~ Abraham Lincoln
Possibly starting with the movie “Roots,” there has been an increased interest among Americans in tracing our ancestry. Few of us can identify our forebears prior to our grandparents. Certainly it can do no harm to learn more about our ethnic origin and heritage. The important thing is that we keep things in perspective. Lincoln realized that his own identity and accomplishments were far more important than his grandfather’s. Let’s all try to leave a record which our children, and their children, will be proud to use as a guide. Our record for service with sympathy and integrity is unsurpassed. Ask any family that we have been privileged to serve.

OTHER Keep Winter Energy Bills in Check (Family Features) As w inter temperatures drop, the potential for higher utility bills goes up. Taking steps ahead of the cold season can help you trim costs and make your home more energy efficient, keeping those utility bills in check even as the w inter w eather rages. Before w inter w eather sets in for your part of the country, take some time to assess your home for potential problem areas and improvements that can help low er your energy costs. Lighting. Though turning off unneeded lights is a smart strategy any time of year, it’s especially helpful during the w inter months w hen utility expenses can add up. New technology lets you manage your lights aw ay from home using an app on your smartphone. Water heaters. Heat isn’t the only system that gets an extra w orkout come w inter. Cooler house temperatures may require w ater heaters to w ork harder, so ensuring you have a model w ell-suited to your family’s year-round needs is key. In fact, heating w ater is the second source of energy use in the residential home after space heating and cooling, w ith standard electric w ater heaters costing the average homeow ner $585 every year to operate. Thermostat. A programmable thermostat is easy to install and saves energy (and money) by automatically adjusting to predetermined temperature settings. Air leaks. An airtight house is critical to managing your heatrelated expenses. Sealing cracks around those w indow s and doors, and other leak-prone areas such as the basement and attic, w ill help keep heat inside and costs dow n.
STORING TOOLS PROPERLY Get a cabinet that can be locked. Shop for a secure cabinet that can be locked so more dangerous items, such as sharp blades, saws and chemicals, can be safely stored. This helps keep these items out of the curious hands of children, as well as away from pets who may sniff around at new smells.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Get support or talk it out. Speaking about what you are going through and getting reassurance from other people can work wonders to strengthen resilience. When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.

DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

DID YOU KNOW? Six of the 10 college majors with the highest salaries for new graduates have something to do with engineering. So says a survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which notes that computer engineering majors earned the top spot with an average starting salary of $70,400 for graduates who finished school in 2012. Chemical engineering majors came in second with an average starting salary of $66,4000, while computer science majors, with average starting salaries of $64,400, came in third. The NACE salary survey relied on information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States Census Bureau and Job Search Intelligence, a compensation management firm. In addition to computer science, the survey, which examined starting salaries for new graduates in more than 90 fields of study, found that finance, construction science/management and information sciences and systems were the only majors outside the field of engineering to crack the top 10.
