PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: For the nineteenth time in its history, the U.S. Government has endured another shutdown. How do you feel about the way our elected officials handle the negotiations that allow our government to continue functioning? • They all have their own agendas and do not care about the people they are elected to serve. • It is a process that is necessary to maintain a system of checks and balances. • Budget negotiations should be limited to budget items and not include other pieces of legislation. • I think that my opinion doesn’t matter! 70th Anniversary SeriesAs we continue down our path of GVPS history, one of the most important aspects of our business is the weekly delivery of the Penny Saver to every home in our circulation area. We include the counties of Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Genesee, Orleans, Steuben and Wayne. In our infancy, about 1000 papers were produced each week which covered Avon, Caledonia and Geneseo. Today we’ve grown to over 150,000 papers delivered into 80 towns. No small task to get all these papers to their appointed destination. Approximately half of our delivery is by adult carriers with either driving or walking routes depending on the area. The other half is distributed through the US Postal Service. Our carrier routes are carefully mapped out and delivered either to a GVPS tube installed by us in front of the home or bagged and placed on the porch or hung on the doorknob. Coordinating the Post Office deliveries and carrier routes is an important job. Shari Rapone, our Circulation Manager, has been employed by us for nearly 30 years, and has supervised the weekly delivery of our Penny Savers for nearly 25 years. Her duties include hiring carriers, arranging routes and handling absences which can sometimes occur with little notice. Shari sometimes needs to find substitute carriers quickly and has often gone out herself to complete a route. She also keeps track of the carriers’ employment information, routes, mileage and weekly pay. She works with the Post Office weekly as well, filling out postal permits and being sure the papers are bundled according to delivery routes. Also, Shari prepares information for our semi-annual audits by Circulation Verification Council (CVC), which provides audit reports for over 3,500 publications in North America. For the past 13 years, we have received their Gold Standard Award which ranks us in the top 1% of publications in North America and first in New York State for our extensive “Reach”, “Readership” and “Response.” A CVC audit report shows all our circulation numbers and is like receiving the “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for publications. They, as well as we, closely monitor these reports as a way of determining how well we are doing our job, for both our advertisers and our readers. For our 71 adult carriers, we have 164 carrier routes in total with Penny Savers being delivered every Friday, or Saturday morning if necessary. Our carriers do a great job for us and often need to deliver in rather harsh weather conditions. Four of our carriers have been with us for over 25 years and 27 over 10 years. As we celebrate our 70th year in business, we want to continue to express our gratitude to those who have made it possible. To our current carriers who are listed here, as well as the many who have worked for us throughout the years, we are very grateful!

OTHER ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

3 money-saving travel tips for retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. 1. Take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings. 2. Don’t overlook travel agencies. While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it’s important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access
to the latest information, and many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors to their countries want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. 3. Travel as part of a group. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budget-conscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it’s with a retirement community, religious organization or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters. Many working professionals hope to spend the bulk of their retirement traveling the globe. While such a goal is potentially costly, there are various ways to save and still see the world.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of Prevagen for Alzheimer’s disease? My chiropractor wants me to take it because my mother had Alzheimer’s. She says her father is doing well and not progressing. What do jellyfish have to cause this result? I have not seen any research from medical facilities that back this up. -- L.C. ANSWER: I could not find any peer-reviewed literature that supports the use of Prevagen for Alzheimer’s disease or other neurological disease. The manufacturer has unpublished data on its website that suggests there may be a benefit in memory. There is also a study in rats that suggests the active protein, apoaequorin, may protect nerve cells against loss of glucose and oxygen. This protein was originally identified from luminescent jellyfish but is made synthetically in Prevagen. The rat research result is surprising, since proteins are normally broken down in the GI tract, and would not be expected to have activity in the brain. There are reports made to the Food and Drug Administration of serious adverse events from this product. A supplement is not required to show its benefit; in fact, the product information for Prevagen clearly states that it is “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.” I don’t recommend using this product until there is clear, peer-reviewed evidence that it is better than placebo. In my mind, taking any treatment -- drug or supplement - to prevent a condition requires the highest level of certainty. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 50-year-old female. How accurate are the results of fecal blood tests? In May, then July, I saw what looked like blood in my stool. My GP ordered the fecal blood test, three smears over three days. Results negative. Then in November I saw it again. My doctor said since the fecal test showed no blood, there is no blood. My sister had colon cancer at age 45. I have had pre-cancerous polyps removed every three years for the past 10 years. Can I trust the fecal blood test results? -- S.C. ANSWER: The fecal occult blood test uses an enzyme that causes a color change in the presence of heme, a component of hemoglobin, the major protein in blood. Although the fecal blood results are pretty accurate, they can be erroneous in two ways: a false positive and a false negative. A false positive means the stool test is positive when there is no blood. This can happen from eating raw vegetables (many types, especially turnips and radishes) and meat. A false negative can happen in the presence of large amounts of vitamin C, but more importantly, many lesions of the colon, including colon cancer, bleed only intermittently. In my opinion, someone with a history like yours, including precancerous polyps and a family history of colon cancer, should have a colonoscopy as the screening test rather than stool cards. DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

6 Fresh New Ways To Enjoy Potatoes (BPT) - Potatoes are the vegetable that take breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to the next level of yum. They are quick to disappear but also quick and easy to buy, prepare and serve. Not only are potatoes uber satisfying, but research published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition also shows that when prepared healthfully, they can be a part of a weight loss program-just call them the 9th Wonder of the World. If you’re looking for flavorful and nutritious dishes that can be part of your weight management plan, then look no further. Here’s a little inspiration for potato dishes sure to become favorites: DIY potato chips: This is a super easy and delicious recipe. Boil a russet potato and a few purple potatoes for 5 minutes, drain, dry and cut into thin slices. Toss the freshly cut slices in one beaten egg white. Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and evenly space the chips throughout the pan. Bake slices at 400ºF for 35 minutes, turning halfway through. Top chips with sea salt. Season with new flavor favorites: Spice up your baked or roasted potatoes with healthy toppings that really raise the bar on nutrition and flavor. Start with a plain, thick and creamy yogurt and a good source of protein. If you’re serious about spice, try adding a tablespoon of Sriracha and orange juice to a halfcup of your yogurt, mix, and add a dollop to your potatoes. Love a Mediterranean flair? Top your taters with Greek yogurt mixed with lemon, garlic, roasted red peppers and oregano. Wholesome mashed potatoes: Mash your potatoes with a low-fat spread, Greek yogurt or skim milk for that creamy, delicious texture you love, without all the calories. Slim-belly baked potato bar: Families will love a baked potato bar. Top a baked potato with ground turkey, salsa and light sour cream for taco night, or top your potatoes with tomato sauce, turkey pepperoni, Italian blend shredded cheese and other veggies for a pizza-style delight. One medium-sized skin-on potato has just 110 calories and contains 45 percent of your daily value of vitamin C. On its own, a potato contains no fat, no sodium, no cholesterol and has more potassium than a banana. Healthy eating is so much better with foods you love and new ways to enjoy them. FRUITS & VEGETABLES MAY LOWER RISK OF PAD Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness. When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

585-447-9108 APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

Make a household favorite more healthy Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well.

WINTER M ORE BRUTAL FOR ASTHM A & ALLERGY SUFFERERS As the w inter months drag on, c abin fever sets in for many people. How ever, being c ooped up inside is even harder for people suffering from asthma and allergies bec ause more time indoors means greater exposure to indoor allergens. Although mold, pet dander and dust mites are often blamed for sneezing and itc hy eyes this time of year, the National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) w arns that w inter pests suc h as c oc kroac hes and rodents c an also be c ommon asthma and allergy triggers. “ The saliva, urine and fecal droppings from cockroaches and rodents contain allergen proteins know n to elicit allergic reactions and asthma attacks,” said Dr. Jorge Parada, medical advisor for the NPM A. “ During the w inter months, cockroaches and rodents seek shelter from the elements inside homes, thereby increasing allergic reactions among those people w ho suffer from allergies and asthma.” According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), cockroach allergens are present in 63 percent of American homes, and mouse allergens in 82 percent. M oreover, the number of homes containing cockroach allergens increases to as many as 78 to 98 percent in urban areas. “ It’s important for a person suffering from allergy or asthma symptoms to see his or her doctor. A medical professional w ill be able to test for a cockroach allergy, as w ell as other common allergens,” Parada advised. “ Although there is no cure for asthma, asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers. A doctor may recommend the use of antihistamines and decongestant medications to manage symptoms, and may also prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication and bronchodilators.”
Makes 6 servings For the sauce: 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 2 pinches salt 2 pinches freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon honey For the chicken: 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 11/2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1/4 inch 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 4 cups baby spinach 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3/4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded) 6 cups cooked whole-grain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray. To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed. To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medium dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about 5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti.

I work for a delivery company. Generally, I find that customers don't see me as a fellow human being, but rather as a conduit for their latest online whim. In particular, I dread the holiday season, because I don't spend it with my family--I spend it with other people's "stuff." I was eating my "lunch" at 7pm outside a gas station before Christmas when I noticed you running into the convenience store. I saw you come out with a gallon of wiper fluid and watched as you approached my truck. I thought you might ask me to help you, so I set aside my sandwich and looked for my gloves. Instead, you handed me a gift card to a doughnut/coffee shop. I was touched by your thoughtfulness toward someone you've never met. It made me feel less Scrooge-like and buoyed my spirit. Thank you so much.
Thank you Partyman Catering and The Cake Place for the delicious luncheon and desserts we enjoyed at our Holiday Party. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver Staff This past Friday I had the pleasure of fine service from three wonderful professionals who obviously take great pride in what they do! First was Wendy at Canandaigua Post Office, who was not only friendly and efficient, but showed several options on a complicated transaction to get the job done at reasonable cost. Next, Leroy and family who own PennYan Sewing Machine were extremely helpful in keeping older machines serviced and ready for another year of hard use. Then our faithful UPS man, Todd, who does Honeoye deliveries, was cheerful and conscientious as
and that one is being used by what appears to be an able bodied person. In comes an individual with limited ambulation obvious enough to require sitting while bathing their perspiration-laden body. First I want to stress the "apparent" able bodied person, as I know all too well that disabilities can be misleading. For instance my wife with MS (multiple sclerosis) appears on the exterior to be fine walking from her vehicle parked in a handicap spot. If you did not know you would suspect he or she would be abusing the Once again, thieves are stealing handicap tag on said vehicle. If you money from farmers' produce stands. are handicapped, I do not mean to Enough! Farmers work from early AM direct this to you. The others ... well. to late PM and yet you are willing to break into their money box because of What is the thinking behind what you want. Get a job! putting animals in a cage in 'their home' for hours and hours... or First, picture this; men’s shower locked in a garage or in a facilities at a local health club. All 8 windowless cellar? always, despite the often heavy, bulky, and constant parcels he brings to keep our farm and home supplied. We are indeed blessed to have these and many more fine people making life easier! We would like to thank the staff at the LeRoy Village Green for such wonderful care that they gave our father with his rehabilitation after his partial hip replacement. It was greatly appreciated.
me the ring. "Her name is inscribed inside." I said her name. You handed me the ring. I was so abashed I could barely utter thanks. You said, "I'm glad I found it. Maybe it came off when you removed your glove. You should go to a jeweler and ask that they make the ring smaller so it won't slip off." You turned and walked to the doors of the hall above the library; so little, pretty and brave.
You stopped me in the parking lot above the library. You said, "Did you lose your wedding band?" I removed a glove and there a bare finger. I said, "I usually wear it when I go out." You said, "Come with me. I'll show you where I found it." On the way you stopped and showed
Why lock a cat or a dog in a cage and think this is okay? Do you like the idea of saying you have a pet? Or of maybe once in a while walking the dog? Or once in a while playing with the pet? Caging is cruel and stupid. Take the time to train an animal properly and enjoy the rewards of a loving pet. Or, find a good home with people who actually care. Some of us hear dogs barking for a long time while locked in a garage; some of us know cats or dogs left in basements day after day; some of us know dogs of all ages locked in cages except for a few minutes in the back yard! Be kind to animals. Please, I beg you; contact your local animal control officer to report this animal cruelty. Nothing will be done for this poor animal unless you or other concerned folks speak up! This dog deserves better than this. PLEASE speak up and report this!
I play golf twice a week [local area] and have lunch in [local restaurant]. Two weeks ago I was there for lunch with a group of golfers, removed my beige cable knit cardigan and placed it on the back of my chair. Unfortunately, I neglected to bring it home with me and when I realized what I had done, called the restaurant to see if the sweater was there. "Oh, yes, we hung it in the closet by the front entrance." The following week I returned for lunch, but the sweater was not there. It had been taken. Well, folks, that is stealing! There are hats and other garments in that space that have accidentally been left there, but my sweater has found a new home. Shame on you! Sorry there are such dishonest people out there. Very disappointed in my fellow man.

LIFE AFTER DEATH Virginia N. Reno (Fulmer) January 18, 2018 Livonia: Went to be with the Lord on January 18, 2018 at age 89. Survived by her husband of 64 years William H. Reno of Livonia and children; Linda Ramirez of MA, Vivian (Michael) Fujimoto of Toronto, Canada, and Amy Prehn of Livonia; grandchildren, Jordan Fujimoto, Taylor (Alyssa) Fujimoto, Midori (Robert) Goobie, Gary Burns (Gillian Miles), Grant Burns, and Julie Burns; great-grandson Lucas Fujimoto. Also survived by her brother Harvey (Evalyn) Fulmer, many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Virginia was predeceased by her parents Ervin & Francis Fulmer, her grandson Adrian Ramirez, sister Mary Jane Bishop and brother John Fulmer.
It is interesting to note that, although young adults’ affiliation with religious institutions may seem to be on the decline, the vast majority of younger adults believe in an afterlife. A survey involving 58,000 individuals showed that four out of five younger adults between ages 18 and 29 believe in some sort of afterlife. Over the past fifteen years, the percentage of those in this age group who identified themselves as religious fell from 49 percent to 38 percent. Over a longer 40-year period, the percentage of those believing in an afterlife increased from 73 percent to 80 percent. In fact, those in younger generations were more likely to believe there is life after death than older ones.
Virginia was born on September 16, 1928 in Rock Island, IL to parents Ervin and Francis (Beverlin) Fulmer. She married William Henry Reno on June 14, 1953 and they were married for 64 years. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1972. She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Geneseo, NY. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and family always came first to Virginia. She enjoyed traveling, reading, music, and encouraging her family in their faith.
Life is full of opportunities to show someone we love them. One such opportunity is the funeral or memorial service. “Make it a point to do something every day that you don’t want to do. This will develop the habit of doing your duty without pain....” ~ Mark Twain
Many people view life as a succession of wearisome chores that must somehow be done. For them, existence is a constant struggle, with no escape from the necessity for doing a lot of dull, uninspiring duties. Mark Twain was never more serious than when he advised us to practice doing those things we do not wish to do, daily, rather than putting them off. When we approach such tasks and complete them, we get that feeling of accomplishment that makes life worthwhile. We drive satisfaction rather than frustration. With us, there are no “minor details.” Everything we do is significant and important to the bereaved families we serve.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop timesaving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
