5th Grade Runner Earns All-American Status at Nationals By Karin Fetzner St. Agnes School 5th grade student Catherine Staley competed in the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships 3K race on December 9th in Tallahassee, Florida placing 12th out of a field of 323 runners in the age 9-10 bracket which puts her in the top 4% of runners in the country in her age group. Catherine improved her ranking in the nation this year by 12 places improving on her 24th place finish last year. The race was conducted under cold and damp conditions with temps only in the 40s and the rainfall from the previous day left the field soggy and muddy but Catherine put in a time of 11:25 earning the status of an All-American Runner. “My goal going into the race was to be in the top 25,” reflected Staley after the race. “I was so happy when I was done and made it. I didn’t know I could go that fast!” Earlier this season, Catherine won the women’s division of the Geneseo Trio. Her overall trio time of 1:00:01 was recognized as a new Women’s Trio record. Catherine was the top female finisher in the Oak Tree 5k with a time of 20 minutes - good for 10th overall. In the Friday Knight 5k, her time was 20 minutes, 9 seconds and she

finished the Ramon Rocha 5k in 19 minutes, 51 seconds, which placed her third overall in the race. This was the second consecutive “Fastest Female” Trio title for Catherine, who ran the races 81 seconds faster than last year. She also finished as the second overall “Fastest Female” in the 2015 Trio races. Catherine also won the St. Agnes School Race to Educate 5K this past September.
Congratulations, Catherine!

Side effects of snoring include higher risk for Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and
slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called betaamyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

Precautionary measures older travelers must consider Climate & Geography It’s also important to consider geographical conditions before establishing any travel plans. Older men and w omen tend to have more health issues and might even be on prescriptions that can make it challenging to travel to certain areas. Before committing to a trip, consult your physician about the possible effects a certain climate might have on you personally. Some people might be sensitive to altitude and therefore unable to travel to high-altitude locations w ithout putting themselves at serious risk. W hen considering climate and geography, don’t overlook a region’s history or likelihood of natural disasters. If a given destination has a history of hurricanes, earthquakes or tsunamis, then consider that before making plans. It’s still possible to enjoy such destinations, but you’ll w ant to travel w hen such storms or natural disasters are not in season.

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Book an energy audit. Energy audits, w hich may be offered free of charge by your utility company, can help detect any additional areas w here a home may be using energy inefficiently. Even if you have to pay for an audit, the cost savings if any additional inefficiencies are discovered w ill likely add up to more than the cost of the audit.
OTHER INSULATED SIDING CAN KEEP YOUR HEAT W HERE IT BELONGS -- INSIDE! If you w ere hit by the “ polar vortex” that brought subzero temperatures to more than half of the continental U.S., it w as a good reminder that the best w ay to stay w arm w as to dress in layers. The same is true for houses. Today’s homeow ners looking for w ays to improve their home’s energy performanc e are increasingly choosing insulated siding -- vinyl siding w ith rigid foam insulation that is laminated or permanently attached to the panel. Think of it as adding an extra layer to w ard off the cold. M ost exterior w alls have insulation in betw een the w all studs but allow significant energy loss through the studs themselves, w hic h are poor insulators. This is called “ thermal bridging.” Insulated siding improves energy effic ienc y by reducing thermal bridging. Like a blanket, it is continuous insulation over the studs, w hic h helps homes stay w arm in w inter and cool in summer. Designed to reach higher levels of rigidity, stability and thermal resistanc e -- “ R-value” -insulated siding is subject to an array of regulations, standards and third-party quality assurance tests that determine how it is manufactured and marketed. Due to that rigor, a number of building and energy-efficiency programs have recognized that insulated siding qualifies as home insulation. In addition, it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a building product that c an help qualify homes under the Energy Star Qualified Homes Program.

Do home improvement projects now, before winter The to-do chores never seem to go away, which can make you want to leave the projects for another season. After all, the deck is going to be covered by snow all winter and the house can always be repainted in the spring. But taking care of these jobs now has benefits beyond just crossing them off of your to-do list. For homeowners in areas of the country that have harsh winter weather, refinishing the deck this fall will help protect it from the winter elements like sleet, snow and ice. For those who live in milder climates, refinishing the deck now means you’ll still get to enjoy the fruits of your labor into the cooler months - and get a jump on spring chores. In addition, having your deck and your house in the best condition going into the rough winter months means that you’ll minimize any damage that could be caused by harsh weather conditions. To get the maximum benefits out of your efforts, take the time to make any necessary repairs to your deck or siding before you start painting. This could include patching any imperfections in your siding and sanding away peeling paint. On the deck, replace warped boards and nail down loose ones. A good cleaning ensures that the surface is ready for stain or paint. Once you’re ready to paint, make sure you have the right tools for the job. It will make the task quicker and easier, and provide more professional-looking results. Paint brushes and rollers have their place as useful tools, but for making quick work of painting a house or finishing a deck, nothing beats a power paint sprayer. The beauty of outdoor painting is that a paint sprayer can be used to get the job done in a few easy strokes.

What a fantastic music department at Penfield High! The wind ensemble, choral and choir, strings and symphony are outstanding; overwhelmed and thrilled with the beauty and skill of the musicians. Thank you and congratulations to 14 to 18 year olds who are the 'good guys'! You looked super in lovely gowns and tuxes! Only wish more of the audience could compliment you by dressing up a bit, too. The hours and hours put into the music presentations by hundreds of teens who choose music ...for us in the community are much appreciated. who deliver our Penny Saver! Monday I had to put air in my tires. I always go to BJ's in Webster. Well I was on my last tire and I was taking off the cap on the tire and I hear a snap and all the air comes rushing out of my tire. I just stood there and didn't know why or what to do. Thank God for the kind gentleman in the cashier’s booth at the gas station at BJ's who came running over to tell me I broke the sensor off and he would get me help from the auto dept. in BJ's. Within 5 minutes another kind gentlemen came over with tools to change my tire and put the spare one on. I asked him what I owed and he said "Merry Christmas." I didn't get the names of either men but I just wanted to say thank you so very much to both of you for your

On 9/13/17 I had picked my child up from an area high school and quickly turned around in the driveway across from the school to pick up another student who also needed a ride. I completely turned my car around so that I wouldn't have to back out of the driveway with so much school traffic and children walking. After picking up this second student I was flagged down by a car so I put my window down. The homeowner got into his car and chased me so that he could scream, point his finger and belligerently remind me that I am never to use his driveway again. Because you chased me down and scared me, I did report your

You truly are angels and the very heart of this program. Without your weekly visits to these facilities, many residents would have no one to speak for them.

forwarded my concerns to the county. I'm sorry it resorted to this, but I am tired of asking you to pick up an occasional box that you shouldn't have left behind and having to call you. It’s frustrating.
How hard is it for this garbage company to pick up a box and throw it away? I've constantly had to call them and they keep on sending someone to pick it up. I have better things to do than to constantly call up this company to pick up something they should've done in the first place. It’s getting old. One lousy box and it’s Tuesday and I called Saturday. We pay for this service in our taxes. Please don't make this difficult for me. I don't want to have to call you up almost on a regular basis. I've contacted the town; they've
I recently phoned [local provider] about a $1.99 extra charge on my bill. I was told it would cost me $5.00 to talk with a live person! I should go online to find out. What do you do if you don't have a computer or are 85 and have a problem using the internet? I find that outrageous!! [Local Town] is being turned into one big junkyard. A once nice restaurant has a view south of a junkyard. The old diner and adjacent properties have turned a once nice area into a slum. Can't something be done?

She made beautiful sweaters and hats for her children and grandchildren that will be cherished forever. Fran took pride in all of her gardens and always looked forward to the spring and summer months so she could work on them. Fran was a snowbird and starting in September, as the gardens began to fade, she would be counting down the days until she would be going back to Florida. Friends called at the Arndt Funeral Home, 1118 Long Pond Road (South of Maiden Lane), Greece, NY on Tuesday, January 2nd, from 4-7pm. Fran’s Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, January 3rd, 11am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. Burial St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Wayland. FACTS OF LIFE While most funeral homes and newspapers will write an obituary, some family members take it upon themselves to write the death notice, including a personalized account of a loved one’s life. If so, mention should be made of the deceased’s full name (and nickname), dates and locations of birth/marriage/death, the names of pre-deceased and surviving loved ones, schools attended, military service, places of employment and positions held, and memberships in organizations. Mention should also be made of the time and location of a funeral, visitation, and burial, as well as preferred charities for donations. Further detailing of the deceased’s hobbies, favorite passions, most oft-heard quotes, and preferred pursuits help make an obituary more meaningful and memorable. Many funeral homes provide forms for basic information and will write the full obituary for you as part of the services they provide. Some newspapers have specific style guidelines or restrictions on length, some only accept obituaries directly from funeral homes, and some only publish obituaries written by newspaper staff members. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. “No one who is occupied in doing a very difficult thing, and doing it very well, ever loses his self-respect…” ~ George Bernard Shaw We may not always be able to command great respect from our peers, but if we can retain a good self-image and respect ourselves, we need little else. Self-respect can be built on conspicuous accomplishment but not too many of us are so gifted. Shaw tells us that if we concentrate on doing one difficult thing…our daily occupation, perhaps?…and doing it very well, we retain our self-respect. It’s something every one of us can do. Every adult who might some day be required to make funeral arrangements, should be well-informed. Our staff is available to answer any and all of your funeral-related questions, without obligation.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Psyllium Allergy Rare But Possible --DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know if you have ever heard of a person being allergic to psyllium fiber? My doctor suggested I take Metamucil for constipation, as opposed to stool softeners. However, when I took it, my face and eyes began to itch, I began to wheeze and I coughed until I vomited it up. My doctor stated he had never heard of anyone being allergic to it. As a side note, my husband has used Metamucil for years, and I have had a couple of episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath that could be attributed to inhaling some of the powder when he mixed it. -P.G. ANSWER: I haven’t seen any cases either, but it can happen, rarely -- most often to people who have allergies to grasses or dust. It is possible that inhaling some of the powder started the allergy. I would be careful to stay away from the area where your husband is mixing his, as allergies sometimes worsen over time. Unfortunately, you will have to find another source for fiber. Good dietary sources include wheat bran, prunes and prune juice. If you need a supplement, you may try methylcellulose (such as Citrucel), wheat dextrin (like Benefiber), and calcium polycarbophil (Fibercon). Be sure to get enough fluid, and start with a low dose and then slowly increase. The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 86 years old and in generally good health. He has been falling for no apparent reason for the past three years. He has had MRIs and X-rays, been to neurologists and ENTs -no one has an explanation. He has walkers and an electric wheelchair, but there are times when he has to stand and/or walk a little. My parents’ apartment looks like a war zone. Almost all of the furniture has been broken, not to mention the cuts and bruises on my dad. Is there anything you can think of that might cause this? -- J.G. ANSWER: If multiple doctors haven’t helped with the benefit of a complete history, exam and labs, I’m not likely to. However, vitamin D supplements have been shown to improve strength and reduce falls in the large number of people who have low levels. There are two ways to find out. You either can have the vitamin D level checked by a doctor, and use vitamin D if it is low; or, you can try a daily dose of vitamin D for a month or so and see if it helps. Most authorities recommend 400-800 IU daily. Personally, I have found that 1,000-2,000 IU often is needed. This dose is unlikely to do harm if taken for only a month trial, and may be necessary for those whose levels are deficient and have symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

DID YOU KNOW? Six of the 10 college majors with the highest salaries for new graduates have something to do with engineering. So says a survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which notes that computer engineering majors earned the top spot with an average starting salary of $70,400 for graduates who finished school in 2012. Chemical engineering majors came in second with an average starting salary of $66,4000, while computer science majors, with average starting salaries of $64,400, came in third. The NACE salary survey relied on information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States Census Bureau and Job Search Intelligence, a compensation management firm. In addition to computer science, the survey, which examined starting salaries for new graduates in more than 90 fields of study, found that finance, construction science/management and information sciences and systems were the only majors outside the field of engineering to crack the top 10.

CORBY’S COLLISION Honeoye Falls Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Make A Reservation Nothing is worse than taking a client to dinner and having to wait to get a table. Once the invitation is extended, make a reservation. Even if the client cannot make it, it’s possible to cancel the reservation. When choosing a restaurant, look for one with an established reputation, and preferably one you have patronized in the past. Avoid restaurants with loud music or ones that are considered trendy, as such locales are often louder and less conducive to conversation. Another thing to discuss when making the reservation are the seating arrangements. If the restaurant is known for its views, reserve a table with a great view and make sure the clients get the best seats at the table. Clients should not be looking at the wall or sitting in a busy location, such as outside the kitchen or near the bar or restroom.
