TIME HOLIDAY SHOPPING RIGHT Shop sales, not schedules. If budget is a big concern, shoppers should grab items that are on sale whenever they are available. That can mean shopping at any time of the year. People can try making a master shopping list early in the year and saving it on their mobile phones. While shopping throughout the year, items from the list can be purchased and stored until the holidays.

GIFTING THOSE WHO LIVE FAR AWAY Food can be a one-size-fits all gift. Exploring the offerings of food gifts, one will quickly find there are all types of options. If a recipient is living overseas or on the opposite side of the country, gift a favorite local food from his or her hometown. Cookie or fruit bouquets can be shipped and are universally enjoyed gifts. Treat towers, popcorn, cheeses, and much more are available for holiday giving.

Be an Angel... Donate an Angel for our Angel Tree to benefit Teresa House, a comfort care home in Geneseo dedicated to the comfort care of the terminally ill. The Angels will be on display from Dec. 3, 2018 to Jan. 5, 2019 at the Teresa House, 21 Highland Rd., Geneseo, NY 14454

Strolls, Sales & Holiday Festivities on Main Street Geneseo Submitted by Geneseo Community Main Street

Geneseo Community Main Street is once again hosting fun, family-friendly events for this yearís Christmas in the Village, a yearly tradition for families all around Geneseo and surrounding towns to begin celebrating the cheer of Christmas. Cookies, elves, horse drawn wagons, caroling, tree lighting and Mr. & Mrs. Claus will make Main Street feel like a cozy winter wonderland on this bustling Saturday, December 1st afternoon. Community members begin their Christmas festivities with the Main Street Elf Stroll. Children can pick up their scavenger hunt cards at local participating businesses and begin searching for sneaky elves hiding in plain sight in businesses along Main Street. These scavenger hunt cards will be turned into Sweet Arts Bakery by 5:00 pm, on Saturday December 8th. The more elves they find, the better their chances of winning Bear Bucks! Bear Bucks are Main Street currency that can be redeemed at any participating Main Street business, for pizza, books, cookies, toys & more! There will also be one Grand Prize winner who gets to take home a paperweight of the original Emmeline Wadsworth Memorial Fountain. At 1:00 pm, the Cookie Stroll will begin. The cost to participate is $10 and there will be a limited number of tickets available at EventBrite beginning November 6th, and at Sweet Arts Bakery or the Not Dot Shop. Registration dayof will be at the Big Tree Inn and the Tompkins Bank of Castile. Participants will receive a map to explore Main Street and stop by businesses who will have delicious cookies from local bakeries to gobble up or save for later. While walking around, be on the lookout for some of the SUNY Geneseo Acapella groups. The South Side Boys, the Geneseo Emmelodics, and Between the Lines will be rotating between participating stores throughout the day to carol and bring Christmas cheer to all of those who participate! If the next shop is just a little too far to walk on a full stomach, the Horse Drawn Wagon will be the perfect break to regain your cookie appetite. Wagon rides will run from 1:00 pm 4:00 pm, circling from the center of town to the Wadsworth Homestead. And if you stick around late enough, you may bump into Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus as they stroll Main Street from

4:00pm - 6:00 pm. Rumor has it they have a sack of candy canes for the good little kids they see around! Beginning at 2:00pm, there will be hot cocoa in the parking lot in front of Florence’s Perpetual Estate Sale, a perfect opportunity to take a break between activities or just warm the whole family up! If the kids are in need of a break, Howard Hanna will also be hosting Christmas coloring between 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. If you’re hungry, Sweet Arts Bakery and other participating restaurants will be offering dinner specials for the whole family beginning at 4:00 pm and running until the 6:00 pm festivities begin at the Village Park with the lighting of the tree, followed by a parade to the Bear Fountain for ChristmaSing. Everyone will be encouraged to join in on the caroling. Cookies & photos with Santa will follow at Touch of Grayce. Warm up with some hot chocolate. Bring your camera and take a quick snap while your little ones sit on Santa’s lap and tell him all that they want this Christmas! There is something for everyone this year at Geneseo’s Christmas in the Village! For more information please contact Geneseo Community Main Street at geneseocommunitymainstreet@gmail.com or call 585-243-4980

Offer Your Family the Gift of Giving this Year Having recently celebrated Thanksgiving Day and remembered our many blessings, may we not forget the twin companions of gratitude: joy and generosity. Being truly thankful for friends, family and the many good things in one’s life can create that joyful state of mind which often overflows into good will and compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves. Regrettably, with the push to purchase following so closely upon the heels of, and in some cases even preceding, Thanksgiving, this “heart-healthy” Spirit of Giving is all too often lost in the following flurry of activities. For this reason and several others, Giving Tuesday was started. Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and after the prime shopping days of Plaid Friday, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. While there is certainly much festive fun to be had in preparing for the holidays and selecting the perfect gifts for our friends and loved ones, balancing this with a mindfulness of those in need is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others, to our children and even to ourselves. For the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, this isn’t just a pleasant, seasonal platitude, these are words we live by. We practice giving back to our community in our pages and beyond. Each week, free of charge, we announce upcoming Non-Profit Events which boosts community support for non-profit and local charitable causes and community support organizations. Adoptable pets receive our help finding homes by sharing their photos in our Pet Place section. We are also privileged to bring you inspirational and interesting Hometown Stories from all over our readership area. Libraries are provided the opportunity at no cost to publish announcements on educational activities for the community, professional training programs, literacy programs and more in our Library Columns, while many organizations are able to ask for assistance thanks to our Who Can Volunteer section. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver also supports local schools, literacy, the fight against hunger, MS research and other causes. We encourage all of our readers to take time on Giving Tuesday to find a way to help those who are struggling this holiday season. Giving money is only one way to help; gifts of time, food, acts of service and even simple holiday cards can make such a difference in the lives of those who are struggling or lonely this year. Visit www.givingtuesday.org for more information on this global initiative or connect with charitable organizations in your own community. You can search through Non-profit events and local volunteer opportunities on our website at www.gvpennysaver.com. “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” — Winston S. Churchill

Thanks to all those who came to my husband’s rescue when he fell October 31 in the driveway at the Livingston Skilled Nursing Facility. What a bunch of caring and helpful people. Thanks again to all. Have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas. My daughter and I were walking on the Trolley Trail on Saturday, November 10. It was very cold and very windy, and our orange, white, and blue BB8 Blanket fell out of the stroller. We didn't notice until we got home, and it was too cold to take her out again. The next morning, we went out looking

There are certain stores in my area that always have only one (or on rare occasions, two) cash registers open. It drives me absolutely NUTS that people will be in line with at least fifty items and will very clearly see me or someone else behind them in line with only one item but not offer to let us ahead of them. Please consider this the next time you are shopping and the person in line behind you has only an item or two. I promise, it takes mere seconds to for us to get through the line.

for the blanket, fearing the worst. However, a nice person had found the blanket, and tied it to a post so that we would see it and so it wouldn't blow away in the wind. Thank you very much! You've made my threeyear old very happy. She says, "thank you," and didn't let go of BB8 until we got home and I made her put it in the washer. Thanks again! I am ashamed that I have to write this. But then I hear that the [local town dept.] has put a stop to the FoodLink Food Truck from providing food to the community in their parking lot. The people who used to go and get food were people who needed that extra help once a month. ONCE A MONTH! And the [local dept.] will not even allow this. I thought that it was the town's taxpayers who paid for the parking lot, so shouldn't they be able to use it once a month? [Local dept.] ought to be ashamed of themselves. All proceeds go to help us support our Veterans and programs held locally. Our ladies donate all the homemade soups, usually a variety of 6 to 8 or more, all the fixings for the sandwiches, as well as all the homemade desserts for our bake sale. blood work results. Mainly I was concerned about my thyroid #. You should know my name after 10 years and maybe know why I am there. When I arrived, my 1pm appointment was really 2pm. They said sorry we were swamped this morning (they close between 12-1pm for lunch). When I finally was brought to the examination room, I was told the doctor would be in shortly. 35 minutes later, my doctor came into the room and said, “good news, your blood work came back great!" Once she took the time from my 5-minute visit to glance at her computer, she noticed my thyroid was off the charts. She thought her mistake was funny! I did not! Needless to say, I’m in the process of finding a new doctor.

THE GRAVESIDE SERVICE After the funeral, the “committal” (or graveside) service is conducted as the coffin is lowered into the ground. This short ritual is usually attended by the immediate family members, other relatives, and closest friends in order to have the opportunity to say their final good-byes. It also often includes the shoveling of dirt and the placing of flowers onto the coffin. Regardless of the type of funeral that precedes it, the importance of the committal service rests with its chance to give the living a chance to eulogize the deceased. Beginning with a short prayer reflecting the religious and cultural affiliations of the deceased, the committal service continues with spoken testimonials that commemorate the deceased’s life in an intimate setting. A funeral service can mark the significance of the life that was lived. They also help us find meaning and purpose in our continued living, even in the face of loss. It’s exciting to watch sheer power in action…the forces of nature, for example, can be awesome. But it is the patient, gentle rain rather than the almighty hurricane that makes things grow. The most powerful tyrants of history have eventually fallen to more patient forces of moderation. And, although few of us will ever wield impressive power, every one of us is capable of being patient…a characteristic everyone can, and should, develop. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other and potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Does Hole in Heart Increase Stroke Risk? --DEAR DR. ROACH: Articles on strokes or TIAs rarely mention that they can be caused by a congenital heart defect. I had a family member with a patent foramen ovale, found at age 54, after he’d had several strokes. He had surgery to repair it and has been well ever since. I would like to know why a PFO isn’t often mentioned or considered. When I see an obituary for a young person who died suddenly, I wonder if there was an undiagnosed hole in the person’s heart. One in 6 people has a hole in the heart; that is a high percentage. I think the public should be educated and made aware of this congenital condition. -- J.R. ANSWER: A patent foramen ovale (which literally means “open oval-shaped window”) is a remnant of our embryology. The foramen ovale is a small open flap that is necessary to send oxygenated blood from the placenta to the body of the developing fetus. In about 25 percent of people (that’s 1 in 4, even higher than you thought), the “hole” doesn’t completely close. PFO is the most common of the “holes” in the heart (ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defects are the other common ones). A stroke is caused by the death of brain cells. PFOs are certainly implicated in strokes. In general, the younger and healthier the person, the more likely it is that a “cryptogenic” stroke (one with no obvious cause) may be due to a PFO. What is likely is that a blood clot can pass through the foramen ovale and go to the brain’s blood vessel, blocking off blood supply to an area of the brain, causing a stroke. The absolute increase in stroke risk is hard to quantify. For people who have never had a stroke, it is generally not recommended to close the PFO. This surgery has risks, and these risks probably outweigh the small potential benefit. For people who have had a stroke, the risk of recurrent stroke from PFO is higher. One group has created a model (the RoPE score) to help predict the likelihood of recurrent stroke. This can help the clinician examine the benefits of surgical repair of the PFO. Surgery is most likely to benefit younger people without traditional risk factors for stroke. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that letting vinegar touch your skin causes arthritis. Is there any danger in using vinegar as a cleaning agent? -- N.J.A. ANSWER: I often get asked whether apple cider vinegar cures arthritis (it doesn’t) or can help relieve symptoms (it might, but there is no good evidence that it does), but I have never heard anyone ask about vinegar touching the skin causing internal problems. Vinegar is a mild acid (most are about 5 percent acetic acid), which normally isn’t particularly irritating to the skin, and shouldn’t be absorbed. Even if it were, acetic acid is found in the body (it’s an important molecule in several metabolic pathways), and your body can use it as an energy source. There is no reason to be concerned about being exposed to household vinegar. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TREATING DEPRESSION

When it comes to improving or maintaining a healthy, confident smile, our conscientious preventive and cosmetic dentistry can make a difference to you and your family. Please give us a call today!

Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

Dr. Lenny Santos

Remember Dr. Doaga will see Dr. Washburn’s patients at our office.

Lightly brush the sliced onions, tomatoes and cut side of the hamburger buns with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the patties, onions and tomatoes directly over the fire. Grill the tomatoes for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Turn the burgers once after 7 to 8 minutes, then grill for another 7 to 8 minutes, or until the burgers are no longer pink inside and an instant-read thermometer registers 160 F in the center of each patty. Grill the onions for about 8 to 9 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time, or until softened and slightly charred. During the last minutes of grilling, toast the buns, cut side down, directly over the fire. To serve, place a patty on each bun. Top with a slice of grilled onion, tomato and 1/4 cup of lettuce mixture and a dollop of yogurt sauce. Serve the extra grilled onion and tomato slices on the side.
