Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

“THINK BIG” Could Very Well Be the Theme for the 33rd Annual Rochester Auto Show, March 1 thru 4 When the 33rd annual Greater Rochester International Auto Show sets up shop at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center for its annual four day stay, Thursday thru Sunday, March 1 thru 4, if it used themes, this one could very well be “Think Big.” According to Show Manager Richard Sherman who has been with the show from the beginning, “We always pride ourselves on the great diversity of product that we have at the show, something to fit everyone’s taste and wallet, be it Pickups, SUV’s, CUV’s, High Performers, Hybrids, Electrics, Compacts or Luxuries, we have them all. But there is no doubt that this year the manufacturers are stressing the big vehicles, especially Pickups and SUV’s. In a very good auto sales year, over 17 million sold, car sales were down over 10 percent while SUV’s and Pickups were up over 4 percent. And that is a trend that is going to continue in 2018. SUV and truck sales are edging toward two out of every three vehicles sold. But rest assured, for those attendees who want to see the latest in passenger cars, there will be plenty to look at with Honda featuring the redesigned Accord, the North American Car of the Year. Sharing attention will be Toyota’s redesigned Avalon, Kia’s redesigned Forte, the new Hyundai Veloster, the redesigned VW Jetta and the Hard Top Mini, just to name a few that were hits at the recently concluded North American Auto Show in Detroit. Not to be outdone, Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan, Chrysler, Fiat, Dodge, Hyundai, VW, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi will all be drawing attention to their entries in this field. Nissan, for one, has almost doubled their space at the show to present much more of their line. And as for Luxury brands, Lincoln, Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Porsche, Audi, Acura, Infiniti, Volvo, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Range Rover and Buick all will be in there with their best. As for electric plug-ins, Honda will show their new Clarity, Hyundai their Ioniq, BMW the i3, Chevrolet will have the Bolt, Toyota the Prius Prime and Mitsubishi the Outlander PHEV, among others. When it comes to pickups and SUV’s, show visitors certainly want to visit, among others, the Dodge Ram display, the GMC display, Chevrolet, Jeep and Ford. Nearly every company has an entry in the SUV field, some in the luxury SUV category and others in the relatively new Subcompact SUV category which features vehicles like the Buick Encore and the new Ford EcoSport. Many of the exhibiting companies will also feature the newest in Crossover Utility Vehicles, CUV’s. As for sneak previews, the list will be headed by the 2019 Subaru Ascent. Visitors also should not miss the state police display at the rear of the first floor. Tying in with the theme of bigness, this year’s show will feature a very special BIG feature with the weekend appearance of the super robot GigaMaxx, which has to be seen to be believed. Maxx is the first prototype of his kind, standing 9 feet tall, he appears to be a living, thinking robot who can process like a human being, with 4 different operational centers synthesizing sight, touch, feeling and thought. He will be making three one-hour appearances each day on Saturday and Sunday only, starting at Noon, 2 pm and 4 pm.. The Saturday schedule is Noon at the Honda display, 2 pm at the Toyota Display and 4 pm at Ford. On Sunday, it’s Noon at Toyota, 2 pm at Honda and 4 pm at Mercedes and BMW. Show hours are Thursday and Friday, Noon to 10 pm; Saturday, 10 am to 10 pm and Sunday 10 am to 7 pm. Admission will be $9.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and active military and $3.00 for children under 12 with no charge for children under 5. There is ample low cost parking for show visitors at the South Avenue garage with a covered walkway right to the Convention Center.

70th Anniversary Series- Volume 8 Our Mission… We’re in the business of helping you reach your customers through advertising, printing, direct mail and promotional products… It’s a tall order, but we’re up for the challenge. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver was our first endeavor 70 years ago and continues on as the cornerstone of our business today. However, through the years, as different needs for advertising developed, we began to stretch our capabilities to include many other avenues in which advertisers could reach their customers. In 1993 we redesigned our business structure and began Penny Lane Printing, a sister corporation to the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Although we had been doing printing up until then, Penny Lane Printing gave us the opportunity to market ourselves as a premier source of all things printed: Stationery, business cards, newsletters, posters, flyers, calendars, signage and publications of all sorts. We pride ourselves on our talented Creative Team who use their expertise to incorporate your ideas into dynamic designs for every facet of Penny Lane as well as Penny Saver. Custom designed invitations, save-the-dates, response cards for weddings and graduations have become a nice addition to our print work. (We will feature our Creative Department in a future volume.) Within Penny Lane Printing, we have the Penny Express division which processes virtually any direct mail piece that is delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. Our mailing software has quarterly updates and gets the best discounts. Penny Lane Promotional Products is our division that can provide you with thousands of different specialty items including t-shirts, banners, pens, mugs, glassware, hats, business incentive awards, to name a few. And on our website, GVPennySaver.com, all our GVPS ads appear online. You can also promote your business through banner advertising, view our weekly online editions, take advantage of our weekly coupon club and promote your business with electronic direct mail. Our online experts can even design custom websites. Staying true to our Mission Statement, we are always working on new and different ways for our customers to make the most of the dollars they spend to reach their customers. …stay tuned for volume 9 next month

Fainting spells for elderly linked to blood clots Falls are one of the greatest risk factors for injury among the aging population. When falls are attributed to fainting spells, people may be very eager to get to the source of the fall. Doctors have found that blood clots may attribute to fainting in the elderly. Information published in the journal Clinical Geriatric Medicine found that the elderly are at a higher risk of blood clots because of their reduced mobility. Blood clots may result in deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, and could lead to a pulmonary embolism if left untreated. DVT is a common problem involving the veins of the legs. Blood pooling in the legs may cause a blood clot to form in the deep veins of the lower leg, impairing blood flow back to the heart. A pulmonary embolism, or PE, occurs when a clot dislodges from the leg veins and travels through the bloodstream to reach the heart and lungs. According to the health site Aging Care, as many as one million Americans suffer from blood clots every year, often resulting in hospitalization. While swelling in the legs, cramping in the lower legs, skin color changes, and warmth of the skin where the clot is located can signal a problem, symptoms of a PE may vary greatly. Shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and rapid or irregular heartbeat can all occur, says The Mayo Clinic. Researchers are finding that, in some cases, fainting episodes also may be indicative of a PE. Italian researchers revealed that, among 560 patients hospitalized for a first-time fainting spell, one in six had a PE.

Certain risk factors put people at a higher chance for DVT and PE. These include: • prior surgery • certain cancers • cardiovascular disease • bed rest that causes blood to pool • sitting for long periods of time • smoking • being overweight

People who are experiencing fainting spells should be on the radar for other symptoms of PE, advises the American College of Chest Physicians. However, it’s important to note that fainting can be attributed to dehydration, a drop in blood pressure and heart-rhythm disturbances.

Use of compression stockings to move blood more efficiently, physical activity, leg elevation, anticoagulants, and pneumatic compression can help prevent the formation of clots. Because PE can be life-threatening, people experiencing fainting or other symptoms are urged to speak with their doctors.

Good Neighbors make this small town life wonderful. Thank you to Joe who plows our driveway every time it snows. You have no idea how much it is appreciated!! THANK YOU. - B. Family

Thank you Bee Morning Coffee Club for making me smile on my ride to work every day. TJ, Steve and Newman, you guys are the best ever along with Billy Kid and Terry Clifford! Thank you to the 2 wonderful gentlemen who helped me with my car rim and tire. I appreciate their help. I don't know what I would have done without them! - The elderly lady

I recently traveled out of town to go a Holiday Church Bazaar just to find out it closed an hour before its advertised time. I work on Saturdays and simply couldn't come sooner but was happy thinking I'd be able to see it. This sort of thing happens frequently anymore. Volunteers simply don't care about commitments to stay until an event

is scheduled to end. While it's true there are much more important things to be upset about than bazaars and rummage sales closing early, it is also true that I personally am less interested in helping a charity whose volunteers simply can't be bothered taking the time out of their lives to keep an event open its entire scheduled time. In my opinion, commitments matter. I made an effort to come. Please make an effort to be there. To the woman in the house across the street: my husband is sick of seeing you walk around naked. We called the police on you and they said there's nothing they can do, that you have a right to wear anything you want in your own home. And yet, every

Thank you for supporting our 44th Annual German Mardi-Gras. Once again it was a full house and a great success! None of which would have been possible without all the support from the organizations and businesses that donated the raffle baskets and costume winner prizes. We would also like to thank all the volunteers that stepped up to decorate and set everything up the Friday night before and then after a full evening of fun and revelry Saturday, remained to take everything down, pack it all away, and put all the tables and chairs away again! This has been an annual event put on by The Federation of GermanAmerican Societies of

night at supper time, there you are. Personally, I don't care what you do, but my husband has to look at you every single night and he's fed up with it. Get a life!

On Tuesday, 11-21-17, at 12:15pm. To the older female at the east end of our city in a store parking lot. We saw you lurking around a truck where you left a hateful note to a woman you obviously know nothing about who is disabled. Shame on you at your age judging and bullying anyone. She has served our medical teams for many years, (possibly even you!) until she was injured and has many other ailments. How can anyone be so mean and hateful at this time of year or any time when so many people need kindness and encouraging words just to get through a day? Try it, you might feel good about yourself! One day you will be judged yourself. Hope it turns out for ya!

Reply to vent about local physicians - Maybe you should consider the advice for insulin, 2 out of 3 MDs are saying you need it. Who are you to second guess their advice? Did you go to school for endocrine disease? Do you know that diabetes left untreated can lead to blindness, kidney failure, vascular disease, loss of limbs among numerous other issues? Dr. shopping to achieve the advice you are looking for is not too smart and you will find a fool for a patient! Best to heed the advice of the professionals before you don't have a leg to stand on, literally!

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

St. Agnes School’s Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest Winners By Karin Fetzner Avon, N.Y.: St. Agnes School participated in the 2018 Zaner-Bloser 27th Annual National Handwriting Contest. The school encourages excellence in all educational endeavors. Good penmanship is part of the course of study at the school. Children begin to practice cursive handwriting at the end of the Second Grade and further mastery is taught in the Third Grade. Beginning at the Fourth Grade level, students are expected to complete all written work in cursive. The Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest gives the students a chance to reflect upon their penmanship, and its importance to their educational experiences. The contest, open to all students in Grades K-8 in the United States, attracts over 300,000 participants. Students in Grades K-2 submit manuscript (print) entries; students in Grades 3-8 submit cursive handwriting entries. The contest entries, both manuscript and cursive are judged according to the Zaner-Bloser Keys to Legibility: Shape, Size, Spacing and Slant. Winners of the contest are selected from both public and private school categories. State Grade Level Winners compete against each other to become one of the 18 National Grade-Level Semifinalists. The 18 National Grade-Level Semifinalists compete to be chosen as one of nine Grand National Grade Level Champions. In addition to these awards, Zaner-Bloser created the Nicholas Maxim Award to honor special needs students who excel in manuscript or cursive. This category is open to students with a cognitive, intellectual, physical, or developmental disability. Zaner-Bloser awards cash prizes and educational materials to winner students, teachers and schools that participate in the

Zara Hopkins, Mary Davis, Thomas Schlueter, Catherine Staley and Angel Rangel-Garcia (missing Lydia Kashorek)

Annual Contest. Last year, second grader Sophia Dowd of St. Agnes School was the State-Level Grade Level Winner. This year the following students’ handwriting entry forms were submitted to Zaner-Bloser to be considered for the State Grade-Level Competition: Grade 1 - Zara Hopkins Grade 2 - Lydia Kashorek (not pictured) Grade 3 - Mary Davis Grade 4 - Thomas Schlueter Grade 5 - Catherine Staley Grade 6 - Angel Rangel-Garcia St. Agnes School is proud to teach cursive writing to all of our students. “Cursive writing is more than just a ‘lost art form’. Cursive writing allows students an additional means to process language, improve fine motor skills, connect with older generations and engage with historical documents,” stated Principal Elizabeth Jensen. This is the 5th year that St. Agnes School has participated in the Zaner-Bloser Competition.

MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER Treat the water To preserve flowers, do your best to reduce bacteria, provide a food source for the flowers and manage the pH so that the uptake of water will continue to be strong. Sugar can be an adequate food source. Gardenista, a floral arrangement and gardening resource, tested a variety of methods for preserving flowers and found much of the same results across the board. These included vinegar and sugar, conventional flower food, bleach, aspirin, and a penny. The bleach, aspirin, copper penny, and vinegar work as antibacterial agents. The sugar and the plant food help nourish the blooms. In the trials, most of the blooms remained strong for three to four days.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: The senior center in my community is kept at a temperature that I and many other seniors find too cool for our comfort. After two hours of playing Scrabble or watching a film, we feel chilled to the bone. We have complained many times to the management, with no change. Recently, I overheard an employee explain to a complainer that the center maintains the cool temperature to keep the germ count in the air down in order to promote a healthy environment. I know very warm temperatures can promote germ growth (anyone in Bacteriology 101 has seen it proven), but would raising the temperature from 72 F to 75 F have any bad effect on the air quality? -- H.L. ANSWER: In bacteriology, most of what we did was in incubators at 37 degrees Celsius (about 99 degrees F), an optimal growth temperature for most pathogenic bacteria in or on a growth medium. However, I was surprised to find that hotter temperatures, in general, tend to reduce both viruses and bacteria in the air. So there’s no validity to the employee’s claim. The people controlling the temperature (the staff ) probably are more comfortable at a cooler temperature than the seniors taking advantage of the senior center (there are many reasons for this). Your suggestion of 75 F seems a perfectly reasonable temperature to me, but maybe it’s worth finding out what most of the community wants. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor will not issue maintenance medication prescriptions for longer than three months. My insurance company has sent me many emails asking me to have him write them for the year, and when I mention it to him, he just refuses. I have been seeing him for five years, and everything is just fine. All bloodwork numbers are excellent. He has just posted a sign in his office that no prescriptions will be refilled without an office visit, so I am not the only one subject to this policy. We like this doctor, but we think this practice is somewhat overbearing, if not unethical. I’d like my prescription to be for a year because we are retired and travel. In the past, more than once I have had to call my pharmacy and have refills sent to another address. This doctor will not respond to calls from a pharmacy for refills; only a visit will do. Is there anything that can be done other than changing doctors? -- A. ANSWER: I wouldn’t say that this practice is unethical. Physicians need to decide for themselves how comfortable they are in treating chronic conditions without seeing their patients for a prolonged period. His method ensures very regular follow-up, and he is likely to find changes to your condition more quickly than if he wrote yearly prescriptions. On the other hand, many people don’t need such close follow-up, and it is significantly less convenient for many. The bottom line is, no matter what his motivation for such a policy, those who find this too much of an inconvenience probably would do better with a different provider. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES

Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.

Undereye circles and swelling can be alleviated when people get to the source of the problem. A combination of treating the sources and masking the issue can help. In severe cases, individuals should visit their dermatologists.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

OPEN TO DISCUSSION As old taboos fall away and people become more accustomed to talking about issues that previous generations might have avoided, increasing numbers of individuals are feeling more comfortable about discussing death and funerals. By preplanning their own funerals, thoughtful individuals assure themselves of the peace of mind that comes with knowing their wishes have been made known and that the details will be taken care of. Those who make advance plans can draw great comfort from the fact that their loved ones will not have to make important decisions during the emotional turmoil that often accompanies initial grief. From a practical standpoint, funeral preplanning also controls the cost of the funeral and protects insurance payouts to beneficiaries. For the same reasons you write a will or buy life insurance, people feel that it is a good idea to prepare for the future and make their own, personal plans. At the time of an actual funeral, most decisions need to be made within a few hours. By preplanning the service options, you can take your time and make the decisions in an unhurried and thoughtful way. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

“The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share with him your riches but to reveal to him his own...” ~ Benjamin Disraeli Sharing riches with some people may represent the greatest harm that can be done. Charitable contributions have been the undoing of some people whose self-respect and confidence were destroyed by “welfare.” It’s not as easy as simply writing a check, but when you can help another by showing him how his own talents and abilities can be his own salvation, you do the “greatest good”…good that may persist for a lifetime. The “riches” he may not know he has, once revealed to him, will permit the achievement of his goals with his self-respect intact. The arrangement of one’s own funeral service, in advance of need, gives peace of mind to thoughtful people. We can help you with all of the details.

Elnora Francis Welsted

February 18, 2018

February 11, 2018

Avon: February 18, 2018 at age 81. Predeceased by her husband William and son Timothy Neff. Survived by her children, Janeen Flagg, Diana (Brady) Cooper, and Darlene (Scott) Miller. 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Arrangements entrusted to the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Routes 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

Elnora Francis Welsted, 87, of Bethany, having spent one final day with her children, passed away at the home of her daughter on Sunday February 11, 2018. She is pre-deceased by her parents Murray and Alice Johnson and by her sister’s Aretha Hale, Ruth Staudinger, Winifred Johnson and her brother Gordon Johnson. She is survived by her children; son Kirk Welsted of Conesus, daughters Kim (Don) Debnar of Tonawanda, Kendra (Rob) Thompson of Attica, Kristina (David) DioGuardi of Bethany; grandchildren Angela (Melissa) DeVos of San Jose California, Nate (Sandra) Peckham of Buffalo, Andrew DeVos of Cheektowaga, Stephenie Debnar of Tonawanda, Elena Welsted of Cheektowaga, Tyler and Katie DioGuardi of Bethany and by two great-grandchildren Elie and Oliver Peckham. Elnora loved the craft fairs and the Erie County fair; she loved to read but nothing meant more to her then holiday time with her children. On Sunday, as her journey was about to end and the next about to begin, and as her children kissed her good bye for the final time whether it was with a look or touch she passed on these words: ‘I know how much you love me, as much as I love you and each time that you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too. But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand, that an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand. He said my place was ready, in heaven far above and that I’d have to leave behind all those I dearly love. So, when tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re far apart, for every time you think of me, I’m right here, in your heart.’ There will be no prior calling hours or services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wyoming County Hospice 450 N. Main St. #3 Warsaw, NY 14569. For more information please call 585-591-1212 or to leave a message of condolence please visit www.marleyfuneralhome.com Arrangements completed by Marley Funeral Home, LLC. 135 Main Street, Attica, New York 14011.

How far you go in life depends on your being tender w ith the young, compassionate w ith the aged, sympathetic w ith the striving and tolerant of the w eak and strong. Because someday in your life you w ill have been all of these. - George Washington Carver

Kids can seemingly ride their sleds and toboggans dow n snow y hills all day long, but even parents get a kick out of racing kids dow nhill or sharing a sled w ith their youngsters. W hile older kids can typically handle sleds on their ow n, parents should ride along w ith toddlers to prevent falls and handle steering duties. H O R O SC O P E S ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your soft-hearted self is drawn to a tempting offer. But your hard-headed half isn’t so sure. Best advice: Do it only after every detail is checked out to your liking. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your inventive mind should help you find a way to get around an apparently impassable barrier and make yourself heard. Your efforts get you noticed by the right people. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re enjoying this creative period. But by midweek, you’ll need to emphasize your more pragmatic talents as you consider a risky but potentially lucrative move. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) An unexpected rejection could turn into something positive if you pocket your pride and ask for advice on how you can make changes that will make the difference. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Lion’s heart gives you the courage to push for answers to a job-related situation. Stay with it. You’ll soon find more believers coming out the ranks of the doubters. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your curiosity pays off this week as you push past the gossip to find the facts. What you ultimately discover could lead you to make some changes in your plans. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new sense of enthusiasm helps get you out of on-the-job doldrums and back into a productive phase. Family matters also benefit from your more positive attitude. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A bit of nostalgia is fine. But don’t stay back in the past too long or you might miss seeing the signpost up ahead pointing the way to a new opportunity. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) If you feel you need to take more time to study a situation before making a decision, do so. Don’t let anyone push you into acting until you’re ready. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) As the Great Advice Giver, the Goat really shines this week as family and friends seek your wisdom. Someone especially close to you might make a surprising request. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Spiritual concerns dominate part of the week before more worldly matters demand your attention. An old promise resurfaces with some surprises attached. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re in a highly productive period and are eager to finish all the projects you’ve taken on. But don’t let yourself get swamped. Take a breather now and again. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for learning new things quickly and applying your knowledge to best advantage where needed. GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.
