Local is powerful. When Terence Brown moved to Rochester from Jamaica in 1993, he had a simple dream: “To get a better life.” And he achieved that, by forming Steel Tech Fabricators, a booming business that creates the steel skeletons of schools, hospitals, factories and other buildings. Terence relies on Tompkins Bank of Castile and Tompkins Insurance Agencies to help him. “If you pick up the phone and call them, they will send someone out,” he says. “Our business aims to go above and beyond. And so do they.”

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Resist a confrontation with that irksome person. The matter will soon blow over anyway. Meanwhile, channel your high Arian energy into areas with more positive potential. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The innovative Bovine finds a creative way to resolve a sensitive domestic problem by midweek. A former colleague returns with an intriguing business suggestion. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) An unexpected critical statement from someone you trust could catch you momentarily off guard. But you soon recover your equilibrium and rise to the challenge. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might feel you can handle a new project on your own. But advice from someone with experience could help you avoid possibly costly as well as time-consuming obstacles. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Waiting for others to make decisions is difficult for the take-charge Lion. But by week’s end, you should hear news that will help you regain control of the situation. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your superjudgmental side could dominate the week unless you try to keep it in check. Otherwise you risk offending people, including some who are very close to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect more information to come out about that possible career shift. Meanwhile, your loving concern helps someone close to you get through a worrisome period. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Despite an occasional setback, workplace pressures should continue to ease through most of the week. This would be a good time to plan that long-delayed trip. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sage Sagittarian quickly recognizes an opportunity when she or he sees it, especially if it’s one you’ve been planning for. Take aim and go for it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat’s unique insight guides you as you check out a questionable situation. Your efforts should prove rewarding for you and your many supporters. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might want to pace yourself a bit more. Rushing could lead to serious slip-ups. Take more time to check out details you might otherwise overlook. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The best way to resolve those remaining problems is to ask others for help. They’ll be happy to do so, especially when you agree to share the credit for a job well done. BORN THIS WEEK: Your natural gift for honest leadership earns you the respect and admiration of others. The m any benef it s of aut om ot ive roof rack s Today’s auto manufacturers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof racks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

ORANGE-GINGER BABY BACK RIBS INGREDIENTS: 5 pounds baby back ribs SAUCE: 1 cup ketchup 1/2 cup hoisin sauce 4 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons grainy mustard 3 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons orange juice 2 tablespoons Asian chili sauce 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon ginger Grated zest of an orange Salt and pepper DIRECTIONS: Preheat the grill to medium and turn dow n to low. Prepare ribs for grilling by removing the membrane from the underside of the ribs. Prepare several foil envelopes and place 2 strips of ribs into each envelope, w ith 1/4 cup of w ater and seal tightly. Cook for 2 to 21/2 hours on low (300* F) w ith the lid closed. Check the thermometer on the front of the grill lid frequently and adjust the c ooking temperature accordingly. This may require turning one or tw o burners off and cooking indirectly. To prepare the sauce: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and set aside until the ribs are ready to remove from the foil. Gently heat the sauce on the side burner for 10 to 15 minutes before using. Carefully remove the ribs from the foil and place on grids. Baste generously w ith sauce, and grill for 10 minutes per side, leaving the lid open, turning several times, and basting w ith sauce after each turn. Heat remaining sauce to a boil and then allow it to simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve on the side as a dipping sauce.

PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: We have heard a lot about the cloning of animals recently from Barbra Streisand’s beloved pet dog to Adolfo Cambiaso’s champion polo pony. What do you think about the practice of cloning animals as a way to get exactly the animal that you want? • Don’t mess with Mother Nature! There are plenty of animals out there that are just as worthy! • The science is available, why not use it! • I don’t have to worry about making this decision, the cost is way too much for my budget! Poll Ends: 03/27/18 Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com Poll Results: 03/20/18 How do you think our youth are influenced by video games? • They are just games and do not encourage violent behavior in youth. – 15.4% • Games that focus on shooting the opponent make our youth believe that this is the way to overcome tough situations. – 46.1% • More research needs to be done to fully understand the impact. – 38.5%

Students at St. Agnes School in Avon recently participated in their 14th Alcohol and Drug Awareness and Abuse Poster Contest for ages 8 to 11. Posters included a slogan that reflected either of the topics and an original visual image. Judges scored the posters on slogan, artistic merit and overall impact. This year the themes were clearly presented, the visuals conveyed a message and in turn additional time was spent on artistic talent which captured the judges’ attention and caused all of us to reflect on the topic.
Contest winners include Emmaline Dowd, Ruairi Mann, Sydney Arbelo, Catherine Staley, Thomas Schueter, Sophie Dowd, Joseph Hayes, and Colleen Talty. Honorable Mention went to Vivanne Boor, Eden Latuik, Maril Dambra, Elizabeth Caizzo, Kennedy Guhman, Caroline Hayes, Ellen Burke, Olivia Caiazzo, and Angel Rangel-Garcia.

The contest has created an increased awareness among the youth of problems with alcohol & drug abuse, and at the same time, the youth carry the word to others of their own age, in their own language. Each winner received a gift certificate presented by Elizabeth Jensen, Principal of St. Agnes School. Throughout the years over 100 - $50 savings bonds have been awarded to the youth.

Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness. When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

Exercise Tips for Beginners The right combination of diet and exercise is one of the keys to a long and healthy life. While many people find adapting to a healthier diet challenging, that challenge often pales in comparison to the intimidation felt when working out for the first time in years. Exercising after an extended period of inactivity may intimidate people who choose to workout at gyms, where fellow gym members may appear to be in tip-top shape. Overcoming that intimidation factor can be as simple as working out with a friend or working with a personal trainer, each of whom can offer the support and guidance beginners need when reacclimating themselves to more active lifestyles. The following strategies can make their return to exercise go as smoothly as possible. • Gradually build up your exercise tolerance. When you exercise, your body releases neurotransmitters known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive feelings can be addictive, but it’s important that beginners do not go too hard too quickly when beginning a new exercise regimen. Gradually build up your exercise tolerance, exercising two or three days per week and taking a day off between workouts when you start. As your body becomes more acclimated to exercise, you can start to workout more and with more intensity. • Stretch after working out. Stretching can improve flexibility, and that may decrease your risk of future injury. In addition, improved flexibility may improve your exercise performance by improving your range of motion and helping your muscles work more effectively. Muscles contract during a workout, and stretching after workouts can help reset those muscles to their natural position. • Find a routine that works for you. Many men and women feel they must sign up for a gym membership upon resolving to adopt a more active lifestyle. While gyms afford you the opportunity to strength train and get in your cardiovascular exercise, they’re not for everyone. The best approach and the one that’s likely to be most successful over the long haul is to find an exercise routine that engages you and that you find enjoyable. If the gym is not for you, try to find a routine that still includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Strength training can make your body more durable, and cardiovascular exercise can reduce your risk for various health problems, including heart disease.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEPRESSION There are different types of depression. A person may have a single bout of major depression or recurring episodes. Depression that lasts two or more years is called persistent depressive disorder. A less common type of depression is called manic-depressive illness. This involves cycles of depression that alternate with extreme highs, or manias.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 53, and three years ago he had three stents put in due to clogged arteries. His cardiologist put him on Lipitor at 80 mg. I don’t know if this is necessary. I worry that it might do more harm than good. -- J.K. ANSWER: In people with blockages in the arteries in their hearts, there is really no doubt that medications like atorvastatin (Lipitor), a statin drug, reduce the risk of heart attack. Although they can have side effects, for most people the benefit far outweighs the risks. It’s important to recall that even a powerful medication like a statin can’t optimally treat people if they don’t treat themselves right. Years ago, I had a patient who was doing well after his bypass surgery and was taking a statin with good results. Walking through the hospital cafeteria, I saw him eating a triple cheeseburger (why the cafeteria even sold such a thing is a separate question), and he sheepishly argued that he was taking his statin. A statin can’t beat a triple cheeseburger. Good cardiac health requires a good diet of mostly plants, with whole grains, nuts, fruits and fish included for people who choose to. Exercise is the other important part of the treatment, and just plain walking is nearly as good as any exercise. Medication, though of benefit, is just a small part of a healthy lifestyle and preventing heart disease, which, although rates are decreasing, is still the leading cause of death in industrialized countries. READERS: Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer. The booklet on clogged heart arteries explains why they happen and what can be done to prevent clogging. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 101W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old male. I have really been shedding the hair on my arms and legs. Is this normal for a man of my age? I have been taking hydrocodone and simvastatin, along with the usual vitamin supplements. Could the medications or supplements that I am taking have anything to do with my hair loss? Could it be my diet, or is it just old age? -- R.C. ANSWER: Hair loss on the arms and legs is less common than on the scalp. Hormonal changes (especially thyroid and testosterone) and medications can be the culprit. A myriad of skin diseases can do it, but these usually have visible skin changes associated. Chronic swelling (edema) of the extremities might be the cause. Simvastatin has rarely been associated with hair loss. However, when I see hair loss on the lower extremities, I worry about peripheral artery disease, which is very common and underdiagnosed. Being on simvastatin suggests that you have had high cholesterol, which is a risk factor for PAD. Having hair loss on both arms and legs, however, makes me more concerned about a systemic cause. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

I would like to thank the woman who found my wallet at the Victor Target store on Wednesday afternoon, March 7th. After paying for my purchases, I thought I dropped my wallet back into my purse, but without me realizing it, I missed and it fell to the floor. I was told the honest woman in line behind me turned it in, completely intact. I was home for a while before realizing my wallet was missing, and panic set in. What a relief when told Target had it in their locked cabinet. I can't thank you enough for being honest and turning my wallet over to customer service. Whoever you are, I am eternally grateful to you. Thank you to the Target employees who kept it secured until I could retrieve it. Bless all of you.
I’d like to respond to the venter who was complaining about recycling in an "upscale neighborhood" making the area a "mess." HOW can you complain about a natural phenomenon over which people have no control?! Send all your hot air up to the weather gods!! (BTW it's "incredible" NOT "incredulous").
Just after getting to a Doctor appointment for my Husband today (we are Seniors) my cairn terrier-support dog "J" got loose when the plastic snap on his collar came apart. J took off running through the Henrietta Park area with me chasing after him. J wasn't slowing down and he then ran across Calkins Road. I would still be trying to find and catch J if it weren't for "Sam and Cory of the Town of Henrietta" who came to my aid, caught and saved J. Thank you so very much Sam and Cory!!! God Bless You! I will pay it forward. Anna and J I want to thank my wonderful neighbors from the farm on
I travel up and down [local road] many times since I have family in [local town]. I had to stop a few times for the ducks that cross the road to get to the water on the other side. I watch for them every time I drive that way. My heart was broken when I saw one had gotten hit. Ducks do not fly away like other birds do. They waddle away. If you cannot stop or slow down for these beautiful creatures then you should not drive. I have stopped for all kinds of animals since I am an animal lover and we must share this earth with them. Please have a heart and watch out for the ducks. In a craft store the other night, a severely ill child was shopping for club project materials with Mom. Kid
Cadyville Rd. in Livonia. Every snowfall they send someone over to plow my very long driveway. During this last snowfall they were out there at 6am plowing so I could get to work on time. It is neighbors like that, that create a wonderful neighborhood to live in. Thank you so much. Thank you to all of the drivers who stopped to check on me after my car went off the road after encountering unexpectedly snowy roads in Lima over the weekend. It was heartwarming to see how many people took the time to make sure I was okay. And special thanks to the gentleman in the red pickup truck who was able
to tow my car out of the snow bank. Thank you again for taking the time to help!!!!
coughed at least 100 times most without covering mouth in the 20 minutes they were in the store. I counted 75 coughs after about 5 minutes of this while I cowered in back of store waiting for them to leave. I know it is important for a child to pick out their own supplies for projects, but the child clearly was not well enough shop in public yet. If he absolutely had to be there, kid needed a mask and proper instruction on covering cough Dracula style. Exposed fellow shoppers and employees to whatever illness child had. This is how severe illness spreads needlessly. Please be considerate of others by staying home or covering yourself with a mask if you must go out when ill.
Don't assume that your 'daytime running lights' include your taillights. Even on many of the newer vehicles, the back end of your vehicle is NOT illuminated, unless you physically turn your DRIVING lights on. Cars in this morning's fog were nearly invisible from behind; same thing happens in the rain and snow. EASY FIX? Drive with your lights on all the time, the cost of replacing them a little more often is more than offset by increasing your visibility and safety. Just because YOU can see doesn't mean other drivers can see you, especially if their windows are dirty.
Thank you to whoever found and turned in a gold hoop earring at The Dollar Store in Batavia. It has been reunited with its mate. Your honesty is appreciated by its grateful owner!

Things to think about while planning a eulogy * Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of. * Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception. * If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed. * If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED? When it comes to her wedding, a bride chooses the dress she wants to wear to an occasion that won’t be forgotten by any who attend. Marrying couples also want to have their say when it comes to choosing the venue, flowers, food, and type of ceremony. These are personal details that cannot be left to others to decide for them. The same may be said of a funeral, a ceremony of equal importance; however, many people are reluctant to take control of their funerals in the same way that they plan weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, vacations, graduations, family reunions, and other momentous occasions. Preplanning your funeral enables everyone to make sure that you will be remembered exactly as you wish. Preplanning a funeral does not have to be stressful. Whether you decide to just provide personal information, make all or most of your selections, or completely plan and pay for your funeral in advance, our trained professionals will explain all of your choices, and will respect your decisions. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. CROSSWORD
“You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head…but you can prevent them from nesting in your hair.” ~ Chinese adage
There is no one who hasn’t experienced misfortune… illness, the loss of a loved one, businness reverses… yet we see some people who have overcome their sorrows and others whose sorrows have overcome them. There is no way to shield ourselves from unhappiness and disappointments, life is full of them. We must try to develop the ability to accept them with a sense of proportion. So, let us not pray for uninterrupted good fortune, but rather ask for the strength to meet whatever the day brings. Some people are unaware that complete funeral arrangements, including financing, can be made well in advance of need. Our plan provides peace of mind and will spare loved ones the task of making painful decisions under stress. Ask us for details.

Your Ergonomic gardening techniques can make gardening less taxing Gardening is a popular activity that seems to be gaining even more supporters. Statistics reports that the number of people who gardened within the last 12 months in the United States rose from around 105 million in 2008 to 118 million in 2017. Gardening can be relaxing yet physically demanding work. Gardeners who find themselves battling aches and pains after spending time in the garden may need to make a greater effort to reduce injuries and improve comfort when tilling, weeding or installing new landscape features. Ergonomic gardening techniques and tools can help gardeners reduce their risk of injury and make gardening more comfortable. Warm up Just as novice athletes wouldn’t dive right into a strenuous workout at the gym, nor should novice gardeners immediately pick up a shovel and jump into digging a hole for their new tree. Gardening requires bending, stooping, lifting, twisting, and other movements that work the entire body. Spending 10 or more minutes stretching, walking and doing a few back and arm rotations can limber the body up for the physical activity to come. Use proper form Think about the mechanics of lifting weights during a workout, as home and garden tasks may mimic movements made when exercising. The occupational therapists at Bend Spinal Care say that strain on the lower back can be reduced by positioning objects close to the body and its center of gravity when lifting them. Furthermore, people can contract their abdominal (core) muscles when lifting and bending to support the back. When lifting heavy objects, power should be derived from the legs and buttocks rather than the back.

Keep items close Keeping work closer to the body will reduce the need for stooping, leaning or reaching, which should cut down on pulled muscles. Long-handled tools can help minimize reaching. Use step ladders to reach high areas or get down on padded cushions to work closer to the ground. This alleviates strain to the neck from having to look up or down for extended periods of time. Raised garden beds can bring plants to a person’s level. The therapists at ProCare Physical Therapy say that working below shoulder level whenever possible can prevent shoulder strains; otherwise, perform tasks for no more than five minutes at a time. Invest in new tools Cushioned grips and grip handles can prevent wrist fatigue, as can hand tools that keep wrists straight to improve strength and reduce repetitive motion injuries. Long-handled tools and push mowers should be as tall as the person using them. Seek out tools that keep the body in natural positions to maximize efficiency. Even though gardening is viewed as a relaxing pastime, the work involved can be taxing on the body. Ergonomic tools and proper form can keep injuries at bay.

HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words.
