Volunteers of America Upstate New York Presents the Maud Booth Award to Penelope Pankow By Chaz Goodman Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA) presented its highest honor, the Maud Booth award, to Penelope Pankow for her extraordinary commitment to the organization at the agency’s Donor and Volunteer Appreciation event that was held on Thursday, March 8th, during Volunteers of America Week, at Frontier Field. Named after Volunteers of America’s co-founder, the Maud Booth Award is reserved for individuals who have shown exemplary leadership, commitment, and service to the agency, its programs, and those served by VOA. In addition to serving on VOA’s Board of Directors for 9 years, Ms. Pankow has been an active supporter during her near decade of service. Ms. Pankow’s concern for the rising poverty rates in Rochester and a desire to help families and individuals in need drew her to volunteer with VOA. She first got involved working with VOA’s residential re-entry center for men and women leaving prison. “Giving people a hand up at a time when their lives can go dramatically in one direction or another matters greatly,” she says. Ms. Pankow has since served on the Board of Directors, including a term as Board Chair, co-chair of the CEO search committee, and chair of the Governance Committee. Ms. Pankow is a generous supporter of VOA’s programs which include: early education and summer camps for impoverished children, job readiness training for low income adults, and re-entry programming for incarcerated individuals. Each of these programs works to further the VOA mission to empower people in the community to rise out of poverty, move toward self-reliance, and reach their full potential. “I believe VOA is on the cusp of becoming much more prominently recognized in our community,” Ms. Pankow says. “As more people understand what we do, our ability to serve will grow.” A Rochester resident for 30 years, Ms. Pankow moved here from Los Angeles to work at Eastman Kodak before starting F. Oliver’s, her own culinary hospitality business. Others recognized at the event

Penelope Pankow at F. Oliver’s

include: Rochester City Police Investigator Otto Harnischfeger (Community Citizenship Award), Rochester City Firefighter Jason Ashton (Community Citizenship Award), Joanne Chada (Community Volunteer of the Year), and UniLink (Corporate Supporter of the Year). About Volunteers of America Upstate New York: Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA) is a local non-profit human service organization that serves more than 6,000 men, women and children annually in Rochester and throughout Upstate New York. The agency’s mission is to empower people in our community to rise out of poverty, move toward self-reliance, and reach their full potential. VOA offers a wide array of programming in four key areas: early childhood education; supportive housing for homeless and low income individuals and families; job readiness/workforce development services; and reentry programs for individuals who are or have been incarcerated. Volunteers of America Week is a celebration of the 122nd anniversary of the agency’s national founding on March 8th, 1896.

Why All the Hysteria Over Measles Outbreak? --DEAR DR. ROACH: I do not understand the hysteria over the measles outbreak. In my day, every kid had the measles and other childhood diseases, and all survived with strengthened immune systems. Today, young people have no natural defenses against diseases because their immune systems have been compromised by drugs. With the exception of smallpox and polio, childhood diseases are a rite of passage. -- B.W. ANSWER: In the days before vaccines, pretty much every kid did get the measles, but unfortunately, not all of them survived. Although measles death rates were already dropping, before the vaccine was available there were still hundreds of thousands of cases every year, with hundreds of deaths and thousands of cases of severe complications, such as encephalitis, an extremely serious inflammation of the brain that can have long-term repercussions. The vaccine reduced the death rate to essentially zero and the case rate to a few cases per year, mostly from international travelers. Over the decades, the measles vaccine has prevented many thousands of children from death and disability. People, including me, are worried about the measles outbreak because there are many more people now who, because of diseases like HIV and cancer, have immune systems that leave them susceptible to measles, a highly infectious disease. Children under 1 year cannot get the vaccine and the immunity they get from their mother’s immune system wanes over time. Thus, there are many people at high risk for measles in the population now. The measles vaccine strengthens, not weakens, the immune system, and provides lifelong immunity for nearly everybody who gets two doses. There are risks of the vaccine, but serious adverse effects from it are rare. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you ever heard of anyone being allergic or sensitive to newspaper print? I read the newspaper from front to back and like to know what the latest news is. I always seem to have burning eyes, itchy nose and some difficulty breathing. Is an allergy possible, and if so, how can I remedy it? -- J.L. ANSWER: It certainly is possible, and there have been some high-profile cases lately, including a Baltimore newspaper reporter. Most often, the chemical is from pine rosin, used in the printing process. An allergist can confirm this with skin testing. Avoiding the newpaper ink is the best solution, which may include simply washing your hands after reading the newspaper, or even using gloves. Worst case, many newspapers have electronic versions that can be read via handheld devices or your computer. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We are regular readers of your column. At 72, I have fasting labs done every six months (metabolic and lipid panels and yearly vitamin D check). Some doctors say that having coffee in the morning before a blood draw is OK if you don’t use milk or sugar; other doctors say no coffee. What is the professional advice on this? -- D.B. ANSWER: Coffee or tea without milk or sugar does not interfere with the blood testing. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE

Makeup can help counter the look of dark shadows and pigmentation around the eyes. Use a shade that is opposite the color of the circles to camouflage them. For example, use orange-yellow tones to combat blue-purple shading under the eyes. Makeup artists also advise applying concealer in the shape of a triangle. That way a person is creating a light arrow that draws attention to the bright part of her eyes.

Exercise in the great outdoors. Fitness enthusiasts can reduce their energy consumption by exercising outdoors whenever possible. Replace running in place on a treadmill with running through a park or on a beach outside. Men and women who work out in their homes can take the free weights outdoors to the backyard on nice days, allowing Mother Nature instead of the electric company to supply the lighting.

Take things step by step. Pressures ease in time for weekend fun. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be less rigid when handling a relationship problem. You might believe you’re in the right, but try to open your mind to the possibilities of facts you’re currently not aware of. Enjoy yourself before settling down for some serious work next week. Your efforts will bring a surge in your self-esteem. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) While you’re generous with others, be sure you’re not overlooking your own needs. Take time to assess your situation and make adjustments where necessary. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Being applauded for your achievement is great. Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

BURNT OFFERINGS “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?…” ~ Bible, New Testament

Until Jesus’ resurrection, life’s goal seemed to be only a grave. We lived, we died, then we were buried. Christians believe that Jesus went through this sequence also, but with one magnificent difference… He arose from the dead! By thus depriving the grave of its victory, Jesus assured us that we, too, need not merely die. We can have everlasting life after death. It is this promise that gives significance to Easter and makes bereavement more endurable for us all. Easter is a happy time! We hope that you and your family will worship God in the Church of your choice, and have your lives enriched.

A Chinese funeral rite that dates back hundreds of years calls for the family of the deceased to burn joss paper, also known as “ghost” or “spirit” money), which takes the form of paper replicas of items that the deceased will need in the afterlife. These paper offerings may include money and facsimiles of such things as cars. This notion of preparing the dead with material possessions they will need in the afterlife is nothing new, as ancient Egyptian custom attests. If nothing else, providing the dearly departed with significant gifts and offerings provides survivors with a measure of comfort that they are able, at least symbolically, to demonstrate their care and love for the deceased. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time of sharing good memories and experiences with family and friends. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Each time we embrace a memory, we meet again with those we love.” ~ Flavia

How to save more for retirement after age 50 Whether it’s advice from their parents, a response to television ads urging viewers to save for retirement, or their own financial savvy, many of today’s young professionals recognize the importance of saving for retirement from the moment they receive their first paychecks. But men and women over 50 may not have been so practical, and many such professionals may feel a need to save more as their retirements draw ever closer. Saving for retirement might seem like a no-brainer, but the National Institute on Retirement Security notes that, in 2017, almost 40 million households in the United States had no retirement savings at all. In addition, the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that Americans have a retirement savings deficit of $4.3 trillion, meaning they have $4.3 trillion less in retirement savings than they should. Men and women over 50 who have retirement savings deficits may need to go beyond depositing more money in their retirement accounts in order to live comfortably and pay their bills in retirement. The following are a few simple ways to start saving more for retirement.

retirement, while others may keep working out of financial need. Others may simply love their jobs and want to keep going until their passion runs out. Regardless of the reason, working past the age of 65 allows men and women to keep earning and saving for retirement, while also delaying the first withdrawal from their retirement savings accounts.

• Redirect nonessential expenses into savings. Some retirement accounts, such as IRAs, are governed by deposit limits. But others, such as 401(k) retirement plans, have no such limits. Men and women can examine their spending habits in an effort to find areas where they can cut back on nonessential expenses, such as cable television subscriptions and dining out. Any money saved each month can then be redirected into savings and/or retirement accounts.

• Reconsider your current and future living situation. Housing costs are many people’s most considerable expense, and that won’t necessarily change in retirement. Even men and women who have paid off their mortgages may benefit by moving to a region with lower taxes or staying in the same area but downsizing to a smaller home where their taxes and utility bills will be lower. Adults who decide to move to more affordable areas or into smaller, less expensive homes can then redirect the money they are saving into interest-bearing retirement or savings accounts.

• Reconsider your retirement date. Deciding to work past the age of 65 is another way men and women over 50 can save more for retirement. Many professionals now continue working past the age of 65 for a variety of reasons. Some may suspect they’ll grow bored in

Many people begin saving for retirement the moment they cash their first professional paycheck. But even adults over the age of 50 sometimes feel a need to save more as their retirement dates draw closer, and there are many ways to do just that.

Your HEALTH SAYINGS AND THEIR ORIGINS “Fit as a Fiddle.” The phrase “fit as a fiddle” is often used to describe someone who is very healthy and full of energy. But what does fitness have to do with an instrument, anyway? Actually, very little. According to The Phrase Finder, “fit” didn’t originally mean healthy. It was actually used to represent the words “suitable and seemly.” Therefore, something that is fit as a fiddle would mean it was suitable for its purpose. Now “fit” frequently refers to one’s physical shape, and the phrase has evolved. “Survival of the fittest.” Again, the word “fittest” initially did not represent physical strength or well-being. Rather, in this phrase, attributed to Herbert Spencer and later to Charles Darwin, fittest referred to those who were best suited to their environment, or more plainly, those who were best able to survive. Today, it can mean anyone who is able to rise above the odds against them or beat the competition. “Strong as an ox.” The idiom “strong as an ox” has long represented a person who is unusually strong and able to persevere. Because oxen are large beasts of burden that were used instead of horses by American settlers before railroads were created, anyone compared to an ox would have to be someone capable of strong physical labor and ability. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Many believe this phrase to be a helpful rhyming device to remember to eat healthy food to maintain good physical health. However, according to Snopes, the first known version of this proverb comes from Wales in 1866 and stated, “eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Other sources trace the phrase to ancient Rome. Apples can have many health benefits, but no research has confirmed that eating an apple daily will safeguard individuals from any particular illness. A 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine did find that people who ate an apple required fewer prescription medications than those who did not.

On Saturday, March 24th, the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The sun was shining and the snow had melted so Egg Hunters from 1 to 10 years of age went onto the grass and into 2 huge straw piles to hunt for over 2,000 eggs and the “Special Eggs." The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and caricatures! Thanks go out to the following organizations and individuals that made this event possible – Kohlman Farms, Marty Molinari and his members of the Churchville “LEO” Club, the Riga Highway Department, “Face Painter," Adrianna Wellin, Kathy & Cindy from Arlene’s

To the ignorant, emotional people ranting about leashing a pet, take time to find out why the pet is caged/leashed before accusing the owners of "animal cruelty," calling the police, ruining that person's life and possibly having their beloved pet taken away. Is the dog a beagle or husky perhaps? These breeds tend to

wander regardless of training. The owner loves their dog and is being responsible by leashing them so they don't wander into the road and get killed. Though I do see dogs of other breeds playing in the road, and someday a driver is not going to be able to stop in time! Fence in, or leash your wandering dogs if you care about them. It is not cruelty. It's common sense. A leashed puppy? Perhaps it is IN training? Think before you baselessly accuse. It's not all black and white.

I need to add my opinion about re-gifting. If you do not like the gift you are re-gifting, chances are the recipient will not like it either. One Christmas my friend, a Scotch drinker, received Irish Cream as an obvious regift. Needless to say we stopped exchanging after that. We asked around and gave it to someone who took it as a favor to us. Please think twice before regifting that disliked present to someone else. There is a reason you do not like it. Chances are the re-gifted recipient won't appreciate it either.

It is ludicrous that a child could be suspended for more than a year for flashing someone and rumor has it that children who posed a bomb threat to the school may end up with less than 2 months.

I have a certified dog through Therapy Dog International who went through 9 weeks of obedience classes and 9 weeks of therapy dog training and passed a locally administered test through Therapy Dog International. We work at a local grade school and Community Center with seniors so we are giving back to the same community that is charging us for a license! All other area towns waive the licensing fee for therapy dogs and some even offer free licenses if owners are seniors. Why does our town charge.....do they need the money that badly?

Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.
