2018 Zoning District Update • April 17th at 6:00 PM The Village of Avon is updating its local zoning district framework to ensure compatibility with current community development preferences and to improve clarity and understanding of the regulations for all users of the Code. This zoning district update is also the first step in making sure the Code is consistent with the Village’s overall community development vision as outlined in the recently completed 2017 Village of Avon Comprehensive Plan Update.
The Workshop is an opportunity for Village residents and stakeholders to learn about the zoning district update and provide their own input on appropriate regulations for the community. At the start of the Workshop there will be a brief presentation on project scope and introduction to zoning and zoning best practices. Attendees will also be able to participate in a series of zoning and development related activity stations. Your input is needed to help inform this process. We hope to see you there!

TRIVIA TEST By Fifi Rodriguez 1. SCIENCE: What vitamin did scientist Linus Pauling advocate as having health benefits when taken in high doses? 2. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Where is Arlington National Cemetery located? 3. U.S. PRESIDENTS: How many children did President Franklin Roosevelt and first lady Eleanor Roosevelt have? 4. THEATER: Who wrote the 20thcentury play “Private Lives”? 7. GAMES: What color is the No. 1 ball in billiards?
By Monica Pomeroy The RivAlz Blondes vs. Brunettes women’s flag football game organized as a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association® Western New York Chapter is getting a boost from a Buffalo Bill. Linebacker Lorenzo Alexander is lending his expertise to the program as honorary chairman for the May 5 game that pits teams against each other based on hair color. The game also serves as a reminder of the toll Alzheimer’s takes not only on those living with a diagnosis, but care partners, family members, friends and co-workers. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that cannot be prevented, slowed or cured and across New York State, its impact is devastating: close to 400,000 individuals are living with dementia, with another one-million people providing some kind of direct care for those individuals. The Alzheimer’s Association provides resources to all those impacted with free educational programs, on-line communities for caregivers and those living with the disease, access to resources across WNY such as support groups, professional training and a 24/7 toll-free Helpline staffed by master’s level clinicians. “I am honored to advise such a dedicated team of athletes who not only work hard to play, but they work hard to raise awareness about dementia and the work of the local Chapter,” said Alexander. Alexander is a Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, which is presented annually by the National

Football League honoring a player’s volunteer and charity work, as well as his excellence on the field. In addition to supporting the RivAlz BvB program with player guidance and awareness of the program and the services of the Chapter, Alexander runs his own charity, the Lorenzo Alexander ACES Foundation. The Foundation’s goal is that every youth will be inspired to obtain a higher education, pursue a career and maintain a strong family unit while giving back to their community. The RivAlz BvB game will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2018 at Clarence High School. Fundraising by team members and all proceeds from game tickets support the Alzheimer’s Association and its WNY programs and services. Planning an Outdoor Oasis (Family Features) - If it’s time to think about making some improvements or additions to your home, outside may be the best place to get started. D efin e th e Sp ace.An outdoor room could be the entire yard, or just a small part of it. Think about it having walls, a ceiling and flooring, just like an indoor room. • Walls are vertical elements that help define a space, such as hedges, trees, lattice screens, raised garden beds, railings, a gazebo or fence to frame your space. • Ceilings provide shelter and shade. Think of awnings, umbrellas and pergolas. Or use what’s naturally there, like the branches of a shade tree. • Flooring could be the existing lawn, a mulched pathway or a created floor such as a concrete or flagstone patio, or deck. Decide the Elements. Once you know where your oasis is, it’s time to figure out what needs to go in it. • Decking - A low-maintenance composite deck adds versatility and beauty that you can customize to meet just about any need. When planning a deck, don’t make the mistake of building one that’s too small. Mark the area you want to use, then put your outdoor furniture in it to see if you have the space you need. Use an online planning tool to explore designs, materials, colors and accessories. Be sure to check on local building codes and permits needed before starting any construction. Fire and Food. Use your outdoor room any time of day by planning a place to cook and eat. • An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a portable grill or as elaborate as your budget will allow. A DIY pizza oven can also be a fun way to enjoy cooking outside. • Fireplaces, fire pits and chimineas bring coziness along with great function - and they help extend the outdoor enjoyment in cooler weather. Accessories. Just like indoor room, outdoor rooms benefit from appropriate accessories. Make sure you plan for them in your budget as well as in your designs. • Lighting - Landscape lighting, lanterns, candles or strings of white outdoor lights can all add beautiful ambience. • Sound - Add pleasing audio with outdoor stereo sound systems, trickling water features or even just simple wind chimes. • Color - Garden art, tablescapes, container plantings and fabric can put colorful finishing touches on your outdoor room.

WOOD STAINING TIPS
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written many articles about high blood pressure, but I want to know about low blood pressure. What is normal? What is low, and what is dangerously low? I have a heart issue for which I take medication. I want to know if my blood pressure is too low. -- Anon. ANSWER: Among young adults, only 5 percent of men will have a blood pressure below 110/60 or so, and for young women, it’s 90/46. Blood pressure tends to go up with age, so low blood pressure numbers are higher for older adults. For people with healthy hearts, the only time we worry about low blood pressure is if there are symptoms, and the most common symptoms are lightheadedness and fainting. In people with congestive heart failure, low blood pressure usually is not concerning in itself, but because it might indicate that the heart is getting weaker. However, many of the medications used for CHF reduce blood pressure, which can even limit the amount of medication that can be used. In people with blockages in their arteries, too low a blood pressure can cause inadequate blood flow to parts of the heart and cause angina symptoms. The blood pressure is dangerously low when a disease process is causing the low blood pressure. In extreme cases, low blood pressure is one of the most dangerous signs of shock. But in general, for healthy people, low blood pressures are not worrisome. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know about warts. I know they are common in both children and adults. I have one on my thumb. I am 50 years old. Where can the warts spread to? I heard you can find them only on your hands and feet. Is that true? -- J.S. ANSWER: Warts are raised round or oval growths, caused by the human papilloma virus. Although they most commonly occur on the hands and feet, some strains of HPV are more likely to cause warts in the genital region. Warts can appear on any part of your body, and you can spread them from one part of your body to another, as well as from person to person. Warts are more likely to occur in areas of skin that are irritated, such as cuts, scrapes and even areas that are shaved. For this reason, it’s a good idea to treat the wart quickly, preferably before it gets bigger and harder to treat. Over-the-counter wart treatments are most commonly salicylic acid. A nail file or pumice stone to get rid of dead skin first increases effectiveness. Liquid medicine is used for thinner warts, and a plaster is more effective for thicker warts. One home remedy is as follows: Apply silver duct tape to the wart and leave it on for six days. Follow up by soaking the wart and removing any dead skin, then leave the tape off overnight. Repeat the process by applying duct tape for another six days. This is effective in some people. You should see your doctor if these home remedies don’t work. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. I’ve banished Winter, saith the Spring, Awake! arise, ye flowers! Brisk breezes blow, Bright sunshine glow, And rouse the young Year’s powers. ~ Henry James Slack (1818–1896), The Ministry of the Beautiful, “Conversation IV: Spring-time on the Western Coast,” 1850 H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You easily handle your tasks this week, thanks to those high energy levels that never seem to run down. But pace yourself, Lamb, for the demanding week ahead. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) With the arts dominant this week, you might want to pick up any of those creative projects you’ve neglected. A workplace situation benefits from some fresh insight. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Music helps replenish your energy levels. Stream your playlist if you must. But a live concert could prove more rewarding, especially if you go with that very special someone. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Close friends reach out to help perk up your lagging social life. That workplace situation also eases, leaving you time to do more fun things by week’s end. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A revelation clears up that perplexing job-related problem. Some changes will have to be made, which, no doubt, will meet with the Big Cat’s roaring approval. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Reaching out to someone in need is the noble thing to do. But try to restrain the temptation to add a lecture -- no matter how wellintended -- to your good deed. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There could be another tough challenge to face before the month is over. But all that hard work is winning you lots of important recognition from your peers. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Keeping to your work schedule could prove difficult with all those personal distractions. Best advice: Stay with it. There’ll be time later for socializing. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Jumping hurdles this week might be vexing for most, but not for the sage Sagittarian, who recognizes that meeting a challenge can open up opportunities. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) More obstacles might be thrown in your path as you try to finalize a new agreement. But the sure-footed Goat ignores the stumbling blocks and stays the course. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) We know the Water Bearer takes pleasure in giving to others. But why not let someone else enjoy the experience too by accepting that offer of help? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might find that you need to ease up on your hectic schedule this week. Don’t fret about it. It could be helpful to take a break and replenish your energy supply. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of finding practical solutions to complex problems, and you do it with grace. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Our team is ready for your challenge! • Website Design and Maintenance • Computer Repair • Networking • Hosted Email • Server Monitoring/ Maintenance
53 Genesee Street, Avon • 226-2526 • www.hurritech.com
I wanted to send a quick email to thank you for publishing the Penny Saver! My husband sent in a Give & Take ad a while back in search of broken sewing machines to fix, tune up, and donate to local nonprofits. The response was overwhelming, and although we had lots of machines ready for new homes, the two nonprofits we talked with couldn't take them all. That's when we noticed a note about the nonprofit, Mary's Place, on the Hometown Events page. Mary's Place works with refugees and was really happy to get the machines. The Executive Director let us know that several people have already brought in some of the clothes they've made.
The donations that go to our local library are thrown out, the volunteers don't want to deal with a lot of books so over 50% of the donations go in the garbage. I spoke with 2 different volunteers that confirmed that their board of directors are set on the type of book that they want for the sales and the rest goes in the garbage,
We just wanted to let you know, and to say thank you! I grew up in Penfield and always loved getting the Penny Saver when I was a kid. I moved back to Fairport after almost 20 years away and was so excited to see it was still around. Thanks so much for keeping it going. We love it! Have a great rest of the week. Nonna and Doug
into traffic when they suddenly stopped their cars and came to help me. And, yes, I'll "pay it forward." Ginger Graham, Webster
they also both said that new members are not allowed to make decisions or run for the positions as the people that run the organization have had the jobs for over 20 years and their opinions are the only ones that count, the money belongs to the library and this lazy bunch of administrators are stealing the money from our library, I for one will be donating my books to Goodwill.
I moved my family to a small town to show them how they could be part of a town. This has proven to be the biggest mistake we made. We have never been accepted and only made aware if you didn’t grow up here, you don’t belong here. The people who grew up here are not only dishonest but unethical. So instead of showing my children how a town can embrace new people. They have unfortunately learned how you can be ostracized. We will overcome and hold our heads high knowing we are proud of who we are.
I am not an active member of church. But like many others I went to church on Easter. I chose a close, local church. The Methodist Church in Oakfield. I just wanted to say Thank you to Good Samaritans in parking the congregation for being so lot at a medical building on kind to me and my toddler twin Senator Keating Blvd.: Grateful boys. Throughout the service thanks to a man and two books were offered to occupy women who rescued me (and the boys and snack time. The my walker) struggling to get boys were brought up during the across the lot in the 50mph service and allowed to pick out winds April 4. (Sorry I didn't flowers to give to me. It was a get your names; it was very warm and loving church. impossible to hear in that wind!) Thank you! I was being blown sideways and
To me it's as clear as day, you hit it, you fix it! However, that's not the case! There is a new plow driver hitting mailboxes and the home owners are responsible for them! It's not even in his line of driving, so he is swerving into them. Getting heated over this!
I have been disabled and on a fixed income since 1995. On Feb. 16th I forgot to put my handicap tag on my mirror.
Thanks, Merci, Gracias, Danke, Dziekuje Ci, very much! On 3/22/18 I realized my wallet was missing. Came home and began canceling credit cards, etc. (Didn’t know if it was lost or stolen). On 3/27, TOPS in Avon called; they had my wallet at the Service Counter! So – my heartfelt thanks to whoever found it – everything was in place – money, license, credit cards, etc.!!
When I got back to my car I had a ticket on my windshield. I immediately went to the clerk’s office. They made a copy of my handicap tag to send in with my ticket. I was told it would probably be dismissed since I could prove that I am handicapped and that the court would be in touch and that they still may want me to appear in court. I did get a court date of 3/20/18. Then on 2/24/18 I received a paper in the mail stating I was being fined $80 and it had to be paid within 15 days of the ticket which would be 3/3/18 or the fine would double and after 30 days 3/17/ 18 it would triple. I have no choice but to pay the fine since my court date is 3/20. Is the city that desperate for $$?

W e C are by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
BEGINNING AND ENDING WITH YOU While the first chapter in your book of life may have begun with you as a completely innocent participant in your own affairs, the final pages will likely have your fingerprints all over them. With birth comes the inevitability of death. It certainly behooves us all to recognize and respect this fact of life, along with all of the implications it has for those who will survive us. With this in mind, it is better to plot the script for the final chapter than to leave the end for someone else to write. Funeral prearrangement enables you to choose the specific terms of your funeral and burial or cremation. Because these decisions are deeply personal, only you should make them. Preplanning your funeral should be a natural part of life because it provides you with time to make end-of-life decisions in a calm and rational atmosphere. At the time of an actual funeral, most decisions need to be made within a few hours. But, by preplanning the service options, you can take your time and make the decisions in an unhurried and thoughtful way. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. QUOTE: “I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength in distress, and grow brave by reflection.” ~ Leonardo da Vinci

“Life is mostly froth and bubble, but two things stand like stone…kindness in another’s trouble, courage in our own.” ~ A. L. Gordon
Trouble, unfortunately, is a commodity which never seems to be in short supply. It is when trouble hits that we can all deeply appreciate any kindnesses which may be offered to us. These kindnesses help immeasurably in taking the sting out of misfortune. We should look for and be quick to act upon opportunities to extend such kindness to others. We need courage to help us find a solution to our misfortune and in rebuilding with confidence in the future. Our kindness to others in their time of trial gives them the courage and determination to carry on. A beautiful funeral service provides comforting memories for the bereaved and eases the emotional adjustment to loss. Call us.

LOCAL IS working hard
Local is powerful. When Terence Brown moved to Rochester from Jamaica in 1993, he had a simple dream: “To get a better life.” And he achieved that, by forming Steel Tech Fabricators, a booming business that creates the steel skeletons of schools, hospitals, factories and other buildings. Terence relies on Tompkins Bank of Castile and Tompkins Insurance Agencies to help him. “If you pick up the phone and call them, they will send someone out,” he says. “Our business aims to go above and beyond. GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
