4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

Foot traffic: Lawns can take a pounding from foot traffic, leading to compaction and spots of dead lawn. Try to redirect the traffic elsewhere to give worn down areas a break. Aeration can relieve soil compaction. If a certain area has become the de facto pathway, install a paver, gravel or concrete walkway in that spot.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

FRUITS & VEGETABLES MAY LOWER RISK OF PAD Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness. When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

Infection Causes Many Alzheimer’s Deaths --DEAR DR. ROACH: Our local newspaper just ran the obituary of a 59-year-old woman who died from Alzheimer’s disease. I didn’t know her, but I’ve known at least two other people with that illness. One has passed away; the other is in a memory-care unit. How does Alzheimer’s cause or contribute to death? -- A. ANSWER: Alzheimer’s disease is a common degenerative disease of the brain. It’s unfortunately very likely that in the years ahead, you will know many more people diagnosed, as the risk increases with age. Its exact cause is unknown. We often think of Alzheimer’s as being a disease of memory; however, personality changes, loss of insight, impaired visual skills and language dysfunction are other cardinal findings of the disease, though any of these may show more clearly as the disease progresses. Alzheimer’s can progress in individuals at very different rates, but the mean survival after diagnosis has been reported as three to eight years. People with Alzheimer’s disease usually become debilitated due to poor nutrition and hydration, which leads to increased risk for infection, one of the most common causes of death in Alzheimer’s. I don’t mean to suggest that debility is the fault of the caregivers of people with advanced dementia. Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease is a difficult and demanding task -- physically, mentally and emotionally. But no matter how devoted and skillful the care is, there is no preventing the physical decline that happens as the Alzheimer’s progresses; we can only slow it down. It has been my experience that in patients with advanced dementia, the caregiver becomes the most important part of the team to get information from and give guidance on care and provide support to. The booklet on Alzheimer’s disease gives a detailed presentation of this common illness. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m pushing 90 years old. I developed large, blue veins, similar to the varicose veins my mother had in her legs. What are these called on the hands? I read that Hollywood stars get their hand veins collapsed. I am embarrassed by the vein condition on my hands. -- A.M. ANSWER: “Varix” is the Latin word for a dilated vein, so we call them varicose veins no matter where they are on the body. They run very strongly in families, but it isn’t clear exactly what causes them. Most varicose veins do not need to be treated, but if they are complicated by bleeding, blood clots or pain, they may require treatment. Varicose veins in the legs also can be a cause of restless leg syndrome. Treatment can be effected by surgery, injecting a medication to close the vein or with a laser. Having an experienced practitioner is important. Some people do treat them for cosmetic reasons. You don’t have to be a movie star to be concerned about your appearance. It is expensive, though. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.
By remembering healthy eating involves not just the foods they cook, but also how those foods are cooked, home cooks can make their meals that much healthier.
INFLAMMATION
We Gladly Welcome New Patients! 4384 Lakeville Rd., Geneseo Most insurances accepted. Dr. Daniel Cocris
Remember Dr. Doaga will see Dr. Washburn’s patients at our office.
Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

How occupational therapy can help chronic pain sufferers Millions of people suffer from acute or chronic pain every year, and the effects of that pain extend far and wide. While pain sufferers understandably focus their attention on treating their conditions, it’s important for all people to recognize the nonphysical burdens pain places on people as well. Estimates vary regarding the overall financial burden of chronic pain on healthcare systems, but numerous studies have suggested the overall costs are in the neighborhood of half a billion dollars every year. A recent report from the Institute of Medicine estimated that pain costs American society as much as $635 billion every year, a figure that includes both the costs associated with treating pain and the money forfeited to lost productivity. The costs of chronic pain are substantial in Canada as well. Though the population of Canada is just 35 million (compared to nearly 320 million in the United States), a 2010 report estimated the costs associated with chronic pain and lost productivity and sick days in Canada to be around $37 billion annually. Chronic pain can be uncomfortable and costly, but there are ways to manage the effects of chronic pain and lead an active, productive life. Occupational therapy is one way for chronic pain sufferers to combat their conditions and improve their quality of life. What is occupational therapy? According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, occupational therapists and their assistants utilize everyday activities to help chronic pain sufferers participate in the things they want to do and need to do, including work. What can occupational therapists do? Chronic pain sufferers rely on occupational therapists in various ways. Occupational therapists may identify the cause of their patients’ pain, suggesting alternatives to activities or behaviors that aggravate that pain. Such identification may include evaluations of patients’ homes and work environments.

Chronic pain sufferers can benefit from working with occupational therapists.
Occupational therapists also teach methods for decreasing the frequency and duration of painful episodes. This may include adapting environments that tend to trigger pain. For example, if an office environment is identified as the cause of the pain or a primary trigger, occupation therapists can recommend adjustments and equipment to make that environment less conducive to pain. Occupational therapists also teach clients how to use the equipment so their pain decreases while they perform necessary tasks, such as those associated with their jobs. Many occupational therapists work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals who are treating their clients. This cooperation can help to determine the ideal course of treatment and may help patients hesitant to treat their conditions with medication find other avenues to overcome their chronic pain. Chronic pain is a potentially formidable foe that affects millions of people across the globe. Chronic pain sufferers can learn more about the role occupational therapists can play in combating their conditions by visiting www.aota.org.

Thank you to Br. Paul at the Abbey of the Genesee for the phenomenal freshly made cranberry sourdough bread!! Loved it as toast and later with a sandwich. Can't wait to try the ciabatta and English muffin loaf! The monastery is such a gem in our community. On Saturday, April 14th the Riga Recreation, in partnership with the Monroe County Park's Department, held its 10th annual "Pick Up The Parks" event at Churchville Park. This event is held in order to clean up the park from winter debris and trash from the previous year. Although the weather was not ideal for a cleaning (it was cold, rainy, and windy with the temperature in the
30s) 11 residents braved these elements to spend 3 hours making the park cleaner than it was. Many thanks to Beverly, Vincenzo, Janae, Joss, Martin, Sarah, Rachael, Nathaniel, Susan, and Al for your invaluable service on this day! David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Krony's and the people who work there are the BEST! I want to thank Cindy, Steve, and Charlie for going the "extra mile" during our recent dining experience on Sat., March 31st. It was late, but you still cordially had us come in. To the people in line behind us at the local "refuse station"... To the residents in [local town]. I am tired of the homes in our area that are not kept up. I drove around our tiny hamlet and I found houses with so much junk in the yards you couldn't see the yard, doors falling off, porches falling off, cars, campers and equipment all over. I even saw recliners on a front porch. Your sloppiness decreases the property value of your neighbor's homes. A home is a major investment and though you may not care others do. If you live in town you need to respect your neighbor's investment. Otherwise move to the country where you don't have neighbors. I don't care how you keep up the inside of
closing time, and you all were no doubt tired, you still were friendly and never made us feel rushed. As usual, the pizza, etc. were delicious. A shout out to the young man in the kitchen, as well as the young lady clearing the tables. In a world where people in the workplace can sometimes be so uncaring, and perhaps unpleasant, it is refreshing to see a group of people work at an establishment, and be so accommodating, even remembering your name. When you go to Krony's, you feel like family!!! GRAZIE!!!!
A BIG Thank you to Charlie Parent for keeping Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Geneseo one of the best kept cemeteries in Livingston County; even with tree damage you took care of it all. Also to everyone who donates to help keep it looking great. Without your support and the church support this couldn’t happen. Great Job, Charlie Parent.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
YOUNG CHILDREN’S RESPONSE TO DEATH When attempting to gauge a very young child’s response to the death of a close family member, it is important to know that children between the ages of 3 and 5 years have little understanding of the irreversibility of death. Even when very young children are told about impending death ahead of time, they are still likely to ask when the deceased will return, weeks or months later. Once young children receive a concrete explanation of death, they are likely to display signs of grieving. Young children are also easily overwhelmed by the intense emotional reactions of those around them. With this in mind, we should remain very attentive to the emotional needs of very young children who are grieving. Children’s grief can manifest in many ways depending on their age, developmental stage and life experiences. Children often do a very good job at grieving intensely for a time and then taking a break. The break is usually in the form of play. Adults often mistake a child’s play as a sign that the child isn’t grieving, which is just not true. To learn more about our funeral and memorial services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. “Apologies are seldom of any use…≥” ~ Samuel Johnson Considerate people are often aware that something they may have done or said might have been offensive to somebody. Even though the incident was unintentional, as is usually the case, there is a natural tendency to explain…to apologize and make things right. When we apologize to a friend, they are already aware that our intentions were good. They need no apology. And, our enemies will not usually be placated by apology. A simple “I’m sorry” is as much apology as is ever needed, if there is any need at all. Staying Sharp - Howard Sharp sells 45-year-old business to son, Douglas
●
FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 2018
Puzzle Answers Crossword Puzzle
By Howard Sharp It was 1972. Howard Sharp, a young man with a passion for wheels and combustion engines decided to follow that passion. Sharp opened up shop in a small house on Route 441 in Penfield. He named the business Recreational Vehicles and Equipment and proceeded to fill the place with everything from used snow blowers to chainsaws to snow shoes, but no bicycles. Those came in 1973 when Howard noticed the growing popularity of road bikes. He had a hunch that this was no passing fad and, even if it was, he wanted in on it. So he grabbed a phone book and cold-called a bike distributor listed therein. He bought 3 bikes at a time, COD. His hunch paid off. The bicycles sold faster than he could assemble them. He then ordered 25 children’s bikes for Christmas. They quickly sold out. It was also in ‘73 that Howard met Chris Georger, a sales rep who sold bicycle parts and accessories; it was the beginning of a friendship that continues to this day. “Howard is a grand salesman, a great closer, and a regular, if imposing, guy,” says Georger. “He’s very personable, customer-centric, asks the right questions, listens well, and does the right thing by the customer. He’s also one of my very best friends.” A year later, Sharp moved across the street to a one-bay garage so small he had to move his growing inventory out onto the sidewalk each day to have room enough to build and service bikes. A year later, noting that 90% of his receipts had 14450 zip code, he leased a small temporary space on Jefferson Ave. in Perinton before purchasing an old poultry shop by the railroad tracks on Main Street in the Village of Fairport. He finally had a permanent home for his burgeoning business, now known simply as RV&E because customers found the full name too long to fit on checks. In 1979, while his family of bicycle brands grew Takata, Royce Union, Columbia, Howard and his wife of five years, Jan, an elementary school teacher, began a family of their own with the birth of their son, Douglas. With the ‘80’s came more bike brands Cannondale, Peugeot, Lotus, Ross - and more children; Kristen and Suzanne. Of the three kids it was Douglas who was bitten by the bicycle bug. “As far back as I can remember I’ve wanted to own the bike shop someday,” said Douglas, an avid cyclist himself. It began as these things often do, with young Douglas going to the shop whenever he could, doing any age-appropriate task his dad could find for him.
Sudoku
By 1994 he was on the payroll. After completing high school he attended SUNY Oswego, obtaining a degree in marketing in just three and a half years. During that time he would come home to work weekends, holiday breaks and summers in the shop. “I managed him as I did all my employees. He got no special treatment and had the same responsibilities,” said Howard. But with Doug’s dedication to the business it was evident that the business would someday be his. That day has arrived. With the sale of the business in January Douglas Sharp is now the sole owner of the storied shop known as RV&E Bike and Skate. “Who else would I sell it to? He really does love the business,” said Howard. According to Georger, “Doug has a very open, approachable style; it’s very different than Howard’s but no less effective. And his industry knowledge is unparalleled. RV&E is in very good hands.” So what’s in store for the future at RV&E? Doug says new ideas will be tried but don’t expect radical change. “It’s a proven successful business model so we don’t want to deviate too much from what we know works, but we will do some things differently,” said Doug. In addition to Doug, other long-time staff, including Dan Joensen, who joined RV&E in 1978, will continue to provide expertise and service to their large, loyal customer base. And what will Howard do now that he’s passed the torch to his son? “Oh, I’ll spend more time fishing and with the grandchildren. I’ll still be around here a lot, but it’s Doug’s show to run. He’s calling all the shots now,” said Howard. And the cycle of life rolls on.

While Mother’s Day traditions have changed since Jarvis first proposed the holiday, many people feel it’s customary to give mothers gifts on Mother’s Day, when moms take the day off from chores and relax with their families. Flowers make for popular Mother’s Day gifts, and wellwishers who want to give the special women in their lives flowers this year can consider a host of varieties.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ve set a fast pace for yourself. But as you approach your goal, you might want to slow down a bit in order to take time to reassess your situation and make changes while you can. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Patience continues to be a virtue for the Divine Bovine. So as eager as you might be to get things moving, remember that time is on your side. Make good use of it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) There’s a wee bit of uncertainty in the early part of the week. But things clear up as more facts come to light. Spend quality time this weekend with family and friends. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) An old friend’s return could open new possibilities for both of you. But don’t let yourself be rushed into anything. There could be some factors you haven’t yet explored. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) This week offers a challenge you’re raring to take on. And while eager to get started, do so slowly so that you can focus those sharp Cat’s Eyes on every detail. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Put your skepticism aside and listen to advice from colleagues who’ve been where you are now. What they say could be helpful as you get closer to a decision. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family matter might again require your reassuring touch. Handle it, as always, with kindness and fairness, even if some of your kin prove to be especially difficult. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your ability to tackle even the most intricate details of a project is likely to impress some very important people. A relative shares news later this week. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The Archer’s aim might be focused on the big picture this week, but don’t overlook checking for those details you might have missed. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might feel awkward asking for assistance, but who would refuse the charming Goat’s request? Do it, then go ahead and enjoy a musical weekend. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Pour some cold water on that simmering misunderstanding before it boils over. The sooner things settle, the sooner you can move ahead with your plans. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re in a highly productive period, which you feel can go on forever. But you could be courting exhaustion. Take time out to relax and restore your energies. BORN THIS WEEK: You can combine a sense of adventure with a penchant for practicality. Have you considered a travel-related field? (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Dogs mature at faster rates than human beings. While many have heard the rule that every human year equals seven dog years, the reality isn’t so cut and dry. Size and breed play roles in determining a dog’s age equivalent. According to the pets division of WebMD, the first year of life for a dog may be roughly equivalent to 15 years for a human. Dog food manufacturer Purina says that by its tenth year alive, a small, medium and large dog is 56, 60 and 66 in human years, respectively.
