A small town nursing home with a rich history and bright future... Est. 1969 For more than 50 years the Hurlbut family has been providing compassionate care for the elderly in the Rochester area. ROHM Services Corporation, the parent company for Hurlbut™ Care Communities, was founded in 1964 by the late Robert H. Hurlbut. The name “ROHM” is actually an acronym and a tribute to his parents and stands for Robert’s Outstanding Harold and Martha (Hurlbut). Family runs deep in this company; from the namesake to the fact that Robert W. Hurlbut, President of Hurlbut Care Communities is the third-generation to lead the organization and eagerly anticipates his eldest son Robert to join in the family business of caring as the fourth-generation later this year. This history of caring began when founder, Robert H. Hurlbut was just a young boy. Being an only child can have its moments of loneliness, but not for Robert. For as he grew up, he was surrounded by elderly folks that his parents brought into their home to care for as they could no longer care for themselves. Through this exposure, at such an early age, it became clear to Robert that he wanted to build upon the nurturing foundation his parents had so naturally yet unknowingly created for him. One of the first members of the “ROHM” or Hurlbut™ Care Communities family was Avon Nursing & Rehabilitation which opened in October of 1969. Located within the charming community of Avon, NY this 40 bed, single level facility has stood the test of time. While we are nearing 50 years of operation, the building has many recent updates and we offer many post-acute nursing services. We also have a variety of fun, engaging activities with the goal of fostering close friendships among residents while enhancing their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Today, there are 13 Hurlbut™ Care Communities in the greater Rochester area serving the needs of the elderly and those individuals who need short-term rehabilitative care. Our roots run deep in this community, and the Hurlbut family has dedicated their lives enriching the lives of our seniors while also giving back to the community in many ways. To learn more about Avon Nursing & Rehabilitation, as well as the services that we provide please visit www.hurlbutcare.com or call (585) 226-2225. Sponsored Content

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Windows allow natural light to enter a home, but windows also enable neighbors and others to see into a home. If thieves are the ones looking inside, wide open windows present a security issue. Window treatments are an effective way to add privacy to a home. Closing curtains or blinds limits others’ ability to see inside the house. Switch to more opaque window treatments when using interior lighting more often, as gossamer draperies may still make it possible for outsiders to understand what’s going on inside the home if people and items are backlit.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp.com, living branches should comprise at least two-thirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. However, always prune minimally to avoid damaging the tree.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An apparent act of injustice might turn out to be either an error in judgment or just plain stupidity. So calm down and cool off, and let the explanations roll out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s upsetting when someone you trusted might have failed you. But with new opportunities ahead, you’ll soon be too busy to feel even a wee bit sorry for yourself. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sense of uncertainty could be a good reason to change your position on an important matter. Someone close might try to talk you out of it, but it’s your decision to make. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Being too zealous in pursuing your goal could create some resistance. Try to be more mindful of what you ask people to do, and they’ll be more likely to do it. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Things change as you go from being ignored to being Lionized once again. This is a good time to reintroduce those previously rejected ideas to a more receptive audience. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone new in your life creates both anticipation as well as anxiety. Avoid the potential for misunderstandings by watching what you say and how you say it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch your budget so that you don’t overspend now and have less to invest when the time is right later on. Arrange to share your weekend with someone special. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The temptation to involve yourself in a friend’s or family member’s personal problems is laudable. But get the facts before you make a firm commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to keep the faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’ve reached an important point in your ongoing pursuit of your goals. You might now want to consider letting someone you trust join you on your journey. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You’ve been going through a spate of uncertainty involving people you care for. But it might be time to take a stand on a position you feel sure you can defend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Treading water keeps you busy, but it won’t get you where you need to go. Time to stop making excuses and to start moving ahead toward your goals. BORN THIS WEEK: You see life as both creative and pragmatic. You would not only be a fine artist, but also a successful one. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Adult Vaccines Help Boost Immune Systems --DEAR DR. ROACH: I was wondering what adult vaccines should be given to enhance the immune system, in addition to improving sleep and diet. -- P.P. ANSWER: Our bodies’ immune systems are designed to protect us from outside invaders (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) as well as internal errors (cancers), and they are very effective at doing so. Unfortunately, the germs and abnormal growths also are skilled at avoiding our immune systems, so there is a constant struggle going on. Giving your body proper nutrition and rest, and managing stress help your immune system perform at its best. Vaccines improve your body’s ability to fight off particular infections, increasing your immunity to very specific bacteria and viruses. The vaccines that are generally recommended for healthy adults are: • Flu vaccine (yearly); • Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis once, then tetanus/diphtheria every 10 years; • Human papillomavirus (three doses, up to age 26); • Zoster, the shingles vaccine (once after age 60); • Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13 once, PPSV23 once or twice). Depending on the person’s past history and risk factors, other vaccines – including the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine; meningococcal vaccine; hepatitis A and B vaccines; and haemophilus vaccine – also may be recommended. International travelers may need others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains the most recent recommendations on its website at www.vaccineinformation.org.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Substitute low-fat alternatives for full-fat dairy items. For example, Greek yogurt can sometimes be used in place of less healthy ingredients such as mayonnaise.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: This may seem like a trivial concern in comparison to some of the matters you address in your column, but it is a concern of mine. My spouse passes gas throughout the night. He claims that he is asleep and unaware of any problems. I say that this is a voluntary activity and that he should be able to control it. Who is right? -- D.B. ANSWER: He is. Passing gas while asleep is entirely involuntary. You probably are doing so also while asleep. If you are really bothered by his intestinal gas, then you can work on some dietary changes, including avoiding carbonated beverages and limiting foods that commonly cause the intestinal bacteria to produce gas, such as beans, bran, cauliflower and cabbage. In some people, excess gas production can be a sign of mild lactose intolerance. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Let’s not shake hands, period. Doctors seem determined to shake hands. I have been half-medicated when the doctor leaned over and insisted on shaking hands. In the ICU, I, another patient and several visitors were visited by several doctors, who came in and had to shake hands with everyone. I did not notice whether they cleaned up. -- L.F. ANSWER: I understand what you are saying, but I am not ready to recommend giving up shaking hands. I can understand not shaking hands with visitors in an ICU, but if I am going to be examining a patient, it’s polite to shake hands. Of course, I wash my hands before and after every exam, and hospitalized patients and their visitors should wash their hands frequently as well. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. David Marsh, A Life of Courage

By Pat May, Perinton Historical Society Director of Communications David Marsh was a little boy who smiled often but nothing garnered smiles from him more than his two loves – firefighting and baseball. Although his life took a different turn than most boys his age, David was still able to realize some of his dreams due to the compassion of the Fairport community. Paul David Marsh, the eldest of Harold and Carolyn Crane Marsh’s three children, was born on August 7, 1940. Later he was joined by brother Harold Jr. “Hal” and little sister Molly. He was named after his paternal uncle, Paul Marsh, but the little boy was always called David by family and friends. At the age of six, David contracted rheumatic fever, which led to the beginning of many stays in the hospital throughout the rest of his short life and caused him to be wheelchair bound. In an age where accessibility for physically challenged individuals was rare, David received support from many in the Fairport community, who found alternative ways to include him in childhood activities that others his age would have taken for granted. Knowing of David’s interest in firefighting, the Fairport Fire Department presented him with an honorary membership in 1949 at the rank of lieutenant and gave him a jacket, badge and hat, all of which he wore proudly. Three years later, on November 8, 1952, David was promoted to captain in a special ceremony held at the New York State Rehabilitation Hospital in Haverstraw, New York. David received this honorary rank from the Fairport Fire Department, but it was given to him by Charles M. Fales, president of the Firemen’s Association of New York State, with 16 members of the Haverstraw Fire Department looking on. Each spring at the opening game of the Little League baseball season, David handed the baseball to the Mayor, who would then throw the first pitch. He served as the honorary president of Little League and was awarded a sportsmanship award. On June 8, 1953, the baseball field at Perinton Park was dedicated “David Marsh Field.” An historic marker was placed at the park in 1988 commemorating the site of the town’s first Little League baseball field. In spite of the challenge of spending months at a time at Genesee Hospital, where he required an

educational tutor, and then a year away for rehabilitation at the hospital in Haverstraw, David was eventually able to return to Fairport schools where each day boys lined up to help carry his wheelchair up and down the stairs of West Avenue School. David proudly graduated from Fairport High School in 1959. The following year, he enrolled in a correspondence course in accounting, which allowed him to acquire a job as bookkeeper at Plastic Pools of Rochester in Fairport. Paul David Marsh died August 1, 1964, just six days shy of his twenty-fourth birthday. He was laid to rest at White Haven Memorial Park, but that wasn’t the end of his story. Earlier this year, David’s sister Molly donated items which were close to David’s heart to the Perinton Historical Society. The collection includes his Fairport firefighter jacket, Captain’s and Lieutenant’s hats and badges, framed certificate naming David an honorary member of the Fairport Fire Department, newspaper articles, photographs and David’s Little League trophies. The items are now on exhibit in the Fairport Historical Museum (18 Perrin St.) where, despite his short life, the little boy with the big smile is being remembered and honored for his courage in the face of adversity. This exhibit will be on display through the end of 2018. For more information, please visit: www.perintonhistoricalsociety.org

GVPS ONLINE POLL: The Yanny or Laurel debate recently blew up on social media as more people listened to the robotic voice and stood firm in what they believed that they had heard. Theories explaining the difference in what people were hearing ranged from the acuity of the listener’s hearing to the level of the listener’s bass or even the age of the listener. Yanny or Laurel – Which do you hear?
• Yanny – it is clear to me! • Laurel – how could you hear anything else? • Who cares, I have better things to occupy my time! Poll Ends: 05/29/18
Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com Poll Results: 05/22/18 What is your opinion of the move to accept girls into The Boy Scouts of America, soon to be Scouts BSA?

The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well.

Early signs of Parkinson’s disease Despite affecting roughly 10 million people worldwide, Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder, remains a mystery to many people. To people outside of the medical field with no personal or family history of Parkinson’s, the disease may only ring a bell because of some notable names attached to it. Actor Michael J. Fox and the late Muhammad Ali are two household names that made their Parkinson’s diagnoses public. But even those who study Parkinson’s for a living do not know everything about this puzzling disease. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the cause of Parkinson’s disease is largely unknown. While there’s no cure for the disease, various treatment options can help those diagnosed with the disease live as normal and productive a life as possible. The PF notes that understanding the disease and its progression is the first step to living well. Though the foundation also notes that people first start experiencing symptoms later in the course of the disease, learning to recognize some early symptoms may compel people to seek treatment. and turning is normal, as is quick jerks of the body during initial • Tremor: Many people might experience shaking after a sleep and in lighter stages of sleep are common and should not vigorous workout or when they are dealing with stress or injury. be mistaken for Parkinson’s. HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

Recently my husband and I went to a coffee shop in our town where there are many of these franchise/locations. We have our favorites. Recently we went thru the drive-thru and ordered our regular drinks – 1 coffee and 1 iced coffee. We were treated with such disrespect by the young girl at the window. This young girl brought my husband lukewarm coffee. When he told her he needed it heated up she
Thanks also to Highway Supt Mark David, and to Colby’s and Montesano's for lunch! A most heartfelt thank you to Dr. Bob Lann at Cats Exclusively Veterinary Hospital in Pittsford and his wonderful staff for their longtime care and support of our cat, Patches. On May 7, Dr. Lann quietly and patiently confirmed that we were making the tough but right decision to say a final goodbye to our 20-year-old girl. They made the process as gentle and loving as possible that day and Dr. Lann followed-up with a lovely handwritten note as well as a donation to a local rescue group in her honor. said she had a long line of people to wait on and that it would have to do. When my drink came out it was iced milk, not iced coffee. I complained enough that she took mine back put her hands all over the top of the cup, held the straw and added flavor. To be honest it grossed me out. I asked her to please make me a fresh one. She refused! My husband and I ran out of time but later in the day my husband called the store and spoke to the manager who was horrified by her employee’s behavior. All we're saying – Respect and kindness go a long way. Can someone explain to me why, at a 4 way stop, everyone takes turns to cross or turn. Why then, at a 2 way stop, the driver across from you assumes they have the right of way because they are crossing the intersection straight and not turning. I stopped, waited for about 5 cars to go, and then made my left. As
I am compelled to write my following words of praise for a remarkable aquatic teacher in Webster, Carol Cuomo. Why? Week after week Carol approaches her classes of 20 or more with innovative ideas, classes which challenge us, and a smile, always, from here to there! Often in life, we think positive thoughts for someone who we know deserves our applause, but I'm writing today for each of her students who feel the same way. Yesterday, in a huge downpour, every lady showed up! Thank you, Carol Cuomo for your hard work and caring. You are worth your weight (and more!) in gold. Phenomenal Event!! I turned, another car, who just pulled up, laid on their horn because they felt I had to wait for them first. I've asked AAA instructors and police officers who has the right of way. All I get is...the car to your right??? What does that mean? I'm at a stop sign; there is no car on my right. If they are traveling through and don't have a stop sign, that's different. The hand book for learner's permits don't address this either.

We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
BODY AND SOUL The art and science of preserving the bodies of the dead was originally practiced by the ancient Egyptians, who were the first people to believe in the immortality of the soul. They undertook the elaborate process of mummification in the belief that the soul would never foresake the body as long as the body remained intact. Embalming preserved the body so the soul could return to it after the completion of the “circle of necessity,” a 3,000-year journey that the soul was required to make before it could return to the body and live with the gods forever. Modern embalmers continue the important process of body preservation so that the bodies of deceased individuals can be displayed and accorded respect. Embalming is primarily done to disinfect and preserve the remains. Disinfection is important for all who have to handle the remains and for the public safety of our communities. Without embalming, most remains would not be viewable within a short amount of time because there are constant changes going on chemically and physically. “America is a fabulous country! It is the only place where miracles not only happen, but where they happen all the time...” ~ Thomas Clayton Wolfe Most of us were born in this country and have lived here all our lives. We may be forgiven for not comprehending how the rest of the world looks at our country as the land of miracles..... of dreams come true! “Only in America could such things happen” is often heard, and indeed, we are blessed with opportunities which people in other countries never experience. We should never let our miracles grow commonplace..... we should be constantly aware of just how fortunate we are! When death occurs, your first call should be to us. we can advise you as to what must be done and we can handle many of the tasks for you.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop timesaving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
