Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

“A certain amount of opposition is a great help to a man. Kites rise against, not with the wind...” ~ John Neal

We all have those days… or even longer periods… when everything seems to go wrong. We encounter disappointments at every hand. We realize that we simply must try harder… we must somehow find a way to overcome the difficulties. If we never had to contend with adversity, we would surely lose our ability to deal with it. We would miss out on the satisfaction of facing up to a nasty situation and coming out the winner! Let’s keep that in mind when troubles arise. Our experience enables us to anticipate the needs and desires of those who come to us for our help, and to provide for them in a very comforting way. Call us in your time of need.

Friends called on Monday, May 28th, from 3-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. Jean’s Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, May 29th, 10am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 4 Avon Road, Geneseo, NY. Burial was at Pine Hill Cemetery, Rush, NY on Wednesday, May 30th, at 9:30am. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Livingston County Hospice, 2 Murray Hill Drive, Mt. Morris, NY 14510 or to ABVI, 422 S. Clinton Ave., Rochester, NY 14620.

CROSSWORD

B ecause

W e C are by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

IT IS YOUR DECISION Funeral prearrangement is a two-step process that involves making funeral arrangements as outlined in the preneed contract, followed by a discussion of the funding. During the first phase, a discussion will take place of services such as embalming and other preparations, providing funeral vehicles and transportation services, the funeral ceremony, and facilities for visitation. Decisions will also have to be made concerning the selection of a casket/urn, outer burial container, and other merchandise such as flowers, acknowledgment cards, and transfer containers. Finally, cost considerations may be finalized through life insurance, bank trust agreement, or other method. It is possible to select funeral goods and services without prefunding the funeral, but cash-advance items and services may require reimbursement. Planning their own funeral is not something that most people like to think about. Prearrangement allows you to make your final arrangements at your own pace, at a time when you feel calm, healthy, and rational. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY, facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. QUOTE: “We are not content to pass away entirely from the scenes of our delight; we would leave, if but in gratitude, a pillar and a legend.” ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Elderly Mom Always Complains She’s Sick --DEAR DR. ROACH: My 93-year-old mom is in good condition, except for a kidney disease that has been good for the past 26 years and has had very good reports from her medical practitioner and kidney specialist. One thing that stresses me is why she complains of being sick all the time. Is it because she wants attention, or just wants people to feel sorry for her? I am her daughter, and our family is just upset because of the way she acts. She does have depression, but she has been given depression pills. Please give me some information as to why she is doing this. As her daughter, I need TLC, and I need to know how to handle this situation. -- A.M.A. ANSWER: Based on no more information than you have just given me, I would suspect that she complains about being sick all the time because she feels sick all the time. She probably needs some TLC herself. At 93, I believe she’s earned the right to be the one on the receiving end. Depression may be the cause of her not feeling well, as it so often is. Unfortunately, medication for depression is completely effective for only a minority of people. Depression goes hand in hand with many other illnesses, especially those with chronic pain. I worry that there is a problem you don’t know about. Consider accompanying your mother to her next doctor’s visit, as I am certain she has done for you. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ailments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? -- V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to secondhand smoke or other airborne pollutants. Quitting smoking is by far the most important action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes. Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems. The new booklet on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease explains both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD, in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 601W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. The health benefits of grandparent-grandchild relationships In the not-so-distant past, extended families were the norm, with multiple generations residing on the same street if not in the same house. Today the family unit is largely an amalgam of different situations. The rise of two-income families has pressured parents into finding childcare situations. Quite often grandparents once again step in to offer guidance and support for youngsters. This can be a good thing for both the grandparents and the grandchildren. Although a bevy of psychological research focuses on parent-child relationships, new evidence points to the benefits of the grandchild-grandparent relationship as well. Close relationships between these different demographics is often a sign of strong familial ties. A study from researchers at Boston College discovered that emotionally close ties between grandparents and adult grandchildren reduced depressive symptoms in both groups. Research at the University of Oxford among English children between the ages 11 and 16 found that close grandparent-grandchild relationships were associated with benefits including fewer emotional and behavioral problems and fewer difficulties with peers. Adult and grandchildren alike benefit from relationships with their elders. Grandparents can provide a connection and exposure to different ideas while providing a link to family history and knowledge regarding traditions and customs not readily available elsewhere. Nurturing grandparent-grandchild experiences may be easy for families where grandparents live in the same house or close by. For others, it may take some effort. The following are some ways to facilitate time spent together. • Schedule regular family reunions or get-togethers. Host or plan multi-generation events that bring the family together and expose children to various members of their family. • Promote one-on-one time. Have grandchildren spend time with grandparents in intimate settings. Alone time can be good for both and offers each undivided attention. A meal at a restaurant or time

Did You Know? An individual retirement account, or IRA, is a type of account men and women who meet certain eligibility requirements can open to save money for their retirement. Unlike a 401(k), a type of retirement account that is provided by an employer, an IRA must be opened by an individual.

spent doing a puzzle or craft can be interesting to both generations involved. • Video chat when possible. If distance makes frequent visits challenging, use technology to bridge that gap. Send photos, letters and electronic communications. Tech-savvy grandparents can use Skype or Facetime to stay in touch and speak one-on-one with their grandchildren. • Share skills with each other. Either generation can play teacher to the other. Grandparents may have certain skills, such as baking, sewing or wood crafts, they can impart that may not be readily taught today. Children can help grandparents navigate computers, video games or sports activities. Grandchildren can help grandparents feel younger, and grandchildren can learn new experiences from their grandparents.

To know how to grow old is the master work of wisdom, and one of the most difficult chapters in the great art of living. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel

Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cheer up, Lamb. Your emotional impasse will lift once you allow your highly tuned sense of justice to guide you on what to do about an associate’s questionable behavior. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) News about a project you hoped to work on might need more clarification. Take nothing just on faith. Draw up a list of questions, and insist on each being fully answered. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Giving your time to help others is fine. But don’t lose sight of your own needs. Make plans for an energy-restoring getaway with that very special person in your life. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Congratulate yourself on getting that difficult job done to everyone’s satisfaction. This could be the first of many such challenges you might be offered down the line. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) With your enthusiasm soaring again, you feel ready to tackle a tough new assignment. Good for you! And remember: Don’t be too proud to accept help when it’s offered. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Cupid rules the week for single Virgos eager to make a romantic connection. Meanwhile, Virgo couples experience renewed commitment in their relationships. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Home and work issues vie for your attention through early next week. Rely on your Libran sense of balance to keep you from being overwhelmed by either side. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creative projects might have to go on standby as you tackle other matters making demands on your time and energy. Things should ease by the middle of next week. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your energies are high, and so are your aspirations. But be careful not to let work dominate the week. It’s also important to spend time with family and friends. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s a good time to set aside your pride and stop nursing those hurt feelings. Instead, consider restoring relationships you want to have back in your life. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might be miffed at not being shown more appreciation for your hard work. But don’t brood over it. Recognition comes in its own time and in its own way. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With your inner creative juices starting to boil and bubble, this is a good time to launch a new arts-related project, or go back and restart the one you had set aside. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of seeing the best in people, which helps encourage them to live up to your perceptions. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

Integrating Technology into Instruction at Churchville-Chili Schools By Amanda Puleo Churchville-Chili Central School District is in the sixth year of a technology plan to roll out 1:1 computer access to all students in grades K-12. Recently, the District’s 21st Century Technology Planning and Advisory Committee, a group of district administrators, teachers and librarians, reviewed the progress being made to ensure that instructional programs at all grade levels meet the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards for learning in the digital age. “After reviewing examples of student work from over 300 Churchville-Chili teachers from all subjects and grade levels,” said Instructional Technology Specialist Megan Hugg, “we are proud to say that the district has kept pace with the changing ISTE standards and is meeting or exceeding them. Our teachers are thoughtfully incorporating a wide range of technology into the curricula that engage students and empower them to take charge of their own learning.” For example, fourth-grade students are studying local history and sharing their digital presentations via distance learning technology with fourthgraders in other parts of New York State. At the Ninth Grade Academy, students create mock Instagram posts with visuals and hashtags that demonstrate their understanding of plot, theme and literary techniques used in Hemingway’s classic, “The Old Man and the Sea.” “It’s really exciting to see how much our students can accomplish using the technology we’ve provided them with!” said Hugg. ISTE standards have evolved since their introduction in 1998. Initially, they focused on ensuring that all students had access to digital tools and knew how to use them. Now, the goal is more ambitious: to leverage 1:1 access to internetconnected devices to transform student learning. There are seven current ISTE standards for students: Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator and Global Collaborator. Each standard represents skills and qualities that will enable students to thrive in a connected, digital world. Thanks to a detailed analysis of these hundreds of projects, the Committee identified two focus areas for improvement. Topping the list is Empowered Learner. “This ties in exceptionally well

Instructional Technology Specialist Megan Hugg works with a team of Churchville Elementary School students using online resources to understand math problems. with our district’s commitment to LearnerCentered Principles,” said Hugg. “Ensuring that our students can leverage technology to take a more active role in achieving their own learning goals is central to district guiding principles and core beliefs.” The forward-looking plan also calls for emphasis on skills represented by the Digital Citizen standard. “Students need more help becoming responsible, kind, positive and alert while online,” said Hugg. “We want them to stay safe and be aware of privacy, respect the intellectual property of others, and also understand the moral and legal issues that come along with the misuse of technology. Above all, we want them to be able to create a positive reputation for themselves online and to display ethics and good character.” “Teachers are already doing a great job of using technology to enhance the learning experience at Churchville-Chili schools,” said Hugg. “The challenge is to expand our incorporation of digital tools, actually embedding them into the learning experience. We are seeing more and more classrooms adding higher levels of collaboration with classmates, connecting to global experts, engaging in data collection and analysis, and showcasing learning in creative ways.” “The district is committed to giving our teachers the professional training and support they need to continue to adapt to new roles as expert guides and motivators. As we open doors for students to become more autonomous, self-directed and responsible learners, it is critical that teachers know how to leverage technology in designing authentic and engaging learning activities.”

GVPS ONLINE POLL: After hearing the announcement ‘There will be no anthem, let’s just play softball”, the crowd of hundreds at a Fresno, California high school softball championship game reacted first by booing and then by singing the Star Spangled Banner a cappella. The event coordinator took responsibility for the decision not have the anthem played explaining that protocol is that it is played only at the first game of the day. What is your opinion of the playing of the National Anthem at high school sporting events?

• It should be played at every game of every event. This instills respect for the flag in our youth. • Only play it at the beginning, this will speed things up! • It really doesn’t matter, no one pays attention! Poll Ends: 06/04/18

We are just home from the Henrietta Memorial Day parade! It was great as usual! My comment is for Nichols Electric Company at the corner of E. Henrietta Rd. Valiant Dr. They are somewhat new to this location! As our family approaches that corner to take up our positions to watch the parade and get a good spot for the grands to grab the candy tossed, we notice a sign! Free hots/ chips/lemonade and a cookie! Free to anyone who wanted to get one! What a nice thing to do for the neighborhood! Not sure how many took advantage of this but was very kind of them! Thank you for being a new neighbor! Thank you to the Town of Perinton for cutting brush and dead trees on Loud Road. The

Perinton Crew did an excellent job and we really appreciate their hard work. Thanks to a helpful lady about two weeks ago, I took a friend grocery shopping to Walmart, Geneseo. She was in a wheelchair and I was pushing her with one hand while pulling her shopping cart with the other. We approached a checkout and while putting her items on the belt, a very kind lady behind us asked if she could help us to the car. We said yes - that would be greatly appreciated. While talking, my friend and this sweet lady realized they had met previously. The lady volunteers delivering Meals on Wheels and had once made a delivery to her. Smiles and thanks. So heartwarming to know there

homes. A home is a major investment and though you may not care others do. If you live in town you need to respect your neighbor's investment. Otherwise move to the country where you don't have neighbors. I don't care how you keep up the inside of your home but your outside becomes my problem. [local] Town it is time you did something about this.

To the residents in [local town]. I am tired of the homes in our area that are not kept up. I drove around our tiny hamlet and I found houses with so much junk in the yards you couldn't see the yard, doors falling off, porches falling off, cars, campers and equipment all over. I even saw recliners on a front porch. Your sloppiness decreases the property value of your neighbor's

So the neighbors decided they needed a big dog in their life. I certainly didn't! The almost daily 6:30am and occasional late night barking has ruined my sleep. How is this acceptable? What were you thinking when you got dogs and let them roam off leash on a country road? That the leash law was only enforced in city and village setting. Not everyone is happy to see big dogs in their yard leaving poop behind. Just about every house has at

are still very caring and thoughtful people in this world. Honesty is a rare thing these days. We are grateful to the HONEST gentleman who returned our kayak after he realized it was not free. He called the town police to explain what had happened and returned it to us with a nice note apologizing for the misunderstanding. It is nice to know there are still honest people out there willing to admit to their mistakes and correct the situation. Thank you sir! The Big Springs Garden Club would like to thank all of those who donated plants, pots, & new to you items to our perennial sale that was held on Friday &

least one dog living within their property that is kept in fence. The speed limit is 55 mph on this road that is also used for farm equipment. Not to mention we are off two main roads with the expressway and train tracks on either side of the neighborhood. Every afternoon your dogs are let loose after the school bus drops off kids and run right across the street. I know the kids have seen dead raccoons, woodchucks and deer before the town scrapes up the remains off for the road. Your dog deserves to be kept as safe as your children. I’m just wondering if you even know how hard it is to work for the USPS. They are out in all kinds of weather ALL day. Not just for a second to pick their mail out of their box. People do make mistakes, and with over 500 mail boxes and hundreds of packages daily it’s bound to happen.

Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. We especially appreciated your support for the sale that was a big success! Proceeds help support beautification in CaledoniaMumford and 2 scholarships for graduating Cal-Mum seniors. Hope to see you all next year!

Perhaps rather than being so critical of how others serve you while you apparently just stare out your window at the “very special mail lady”, you should work for the USPS and learn just how difficult the job is. Not to mention, there are many new employees just learning the job. Cut them some slack. I saw you "flip the bird" and lean on your horn recently at an older woman driver. She had signaled her turn into the fast food restaurant, but for some reason you thought she had cut you off or slowed you up. You do not own the road! I guarantee that woman has paid more towards our streets and highway system than you have. I hope your expression of anger and vulgarity was not witnessed by any children in your car. Show some courtesy and grace to other drivers!

IDEAS ON PAPER (NAPSI)—For over 40 years, works by famed sculptor Strong-Cuevas have been acclaimed and enjoyed in major museums and private collections. Now, you can have them at your fingertips. That’s because Abrams Books, the premier art book publisher, has created a lavishly illustrated coffee table sized book of 190 of her color and black-and-white drawings, “Strong-Cuevas Drawings: Ideas on Paper.” All the drawings have been thematically arranged and explore recurring themes of Strong-Cuevas’ art. Strong-Cuevas says her work expresses thoughts about universal consciousness, space and time, and inner mediation. Best known for her sculptures made from bronze, stainless steel and aluminum, StrongCuevas’ art often portrays the human head and plays with scale. Her drawings express the same themes. The book also features a foreword by noted art historian and critic Jan Garden Castro, who has written extensively about Georgia O’Keeffe, Louise Bourgeois, Maya Lin, and numerous others. Also published by Abrams is the critically acclaimed “Strong-Cuevas Sculpture: Premonitions in Retrospect,” featuring photos of her sculpture. Learn More: The book is available at Barnes & Noble and online at bn.com, Amazon.com and www.abramsbooks.com.

Call 226-8111, 343-3111, 393-1111 or 637-5100 A GREAT WAY TO TAP INTO A HOT JOB SECTOR (NAPSI)—If you or someone you know is exploring careers that make a difference, consider the fast-growing field of professional health communication. As the health care industry continues to dominate the U.S. economy, the market demand for health communicators has grown quickly. Those with master’s degrees constitute the core of this increasingly popular profession. As the World Health Organization (WHO) put it, “Health communicators have a unique opportunity to provide meaningful input in improving and saving lives.” The Problem: Not many people know that they can get a degree in professional health communication studies or how to go about it. An Answer: To make it easier for working professionals to earn advanced credentials in the health communication field, Boston University Metropolitan College offers a fully online Master of Science in Health Communication (MSHC) program. Admission to the program, which has received global and national recognition for outstanding work, is handled on a rolling basis throughout the year. Expert’s Opinion “Health care is personal and it touches everyone,” said Leigh CurtinWilding, Program Director for Boston University’s Online Health Communication Graduate Program. “Considering today’s pace of technological advances, scientific breakthroughs, the needs of an aging population and other trends up ahead, how can consumers and patients be assured they’re making the best choices for their health? Who will advocate for the unmet needs of at-risk populations? The chances are high that a professional health communicator will be involved in this work.” Health Care Is Big According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for all health care occupations is expected to grow 18 percent through 2026 and add more jobs than any other occupational group. Professional health communication opportunities are found at federal, state and local agencies, public relations and marketing agencies, hospitals and commercial organizations, consulting firms, health insurance companies and many other areas. Added Curtin-Wilding: “There was a time when a public health degree was the gold standard for this discipline. But we live in a connected world now. The scope of modern health communication spans research, community engagement, advocacy and the use of multimedia communication, including digital tools and social marketing. Our graduates are prepared to lead the way with skills in these areas, as well as up-to-the-minute knowledge in health care policy, biology of disease, epidemiology, marketing, public and media relations, writing and health literacy.” The Boston University MSHC was the first program of its kind taught entirely online. It offers rolling, year-round enrollment for the 10-course master’s program, which can be completed in 18 months, on average. In 2016, BU introduced a new graduate certificate in Visual and Digital Health Communication. Usually completed in less than a year, the fourcourse certificate program features online studies in Social Media Strategies & Tactics that includes membership in the Mayo Clinic Social Media Network. Students also study Visual Communication in the Digital Health Age, an online course blending design theory with hands-on knowhow needed to produce visual assets such as logos, infographics and health care−specific explainer videos. Purposeful Career with Many Different Paths Joseph Krause, of Summit, N.J., earned his Master of Science in Health Communication from Boston University’s online program in 2012. His degree helped him co-found AchieveIt, a business specializing in strategy execution for organizations primarily focused in health care. “When I attended my Boston graduation, I met many of the classmates I’d previously formed relationships with during my online studies. We talked about how we planned to use our newfound degrees—I had no idea how many different directions this program could take you in, professionally,” said Krause. Alpine Manor 2714 Poplar Hill Road, Lima, NY 14485 (585) 346-5880 BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.
