Such foods do not need to be shipped hundreds of miles before they ultimately find their way onto your plate, and many people find that contributes to meals that are more fresh than meals made up of foods shipped from afar. But freshness is not the only benefit to purchasing locally grown foods, which pay various dividends for people and the planet. Locally grown foods benefit the environment. The phrase “field to plate” is significant to consumers who prefer locally grown foods. That phrase refers to the distance food travels from the grower to the plate on your dinner table. Estimates vary depending on the source, but advocates of locally grown food suggest that it reduces the field to plate distance by an average of 1,300 miles. That’s a significant feather in locally grown foods’ cap, as the Council on the Environment of New York City notes that it takes 435 fossil-fuel calories to fly a single five calorie strawberry from California to New York. Buying locally preserves that energy that is used to transport foods from afar. Open 9am-6pm Daily

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi I’m Bruin, yes like Boston Bruins! I’m a Labradane, my mom is a blue Great Dane and my dad is a silver Lab. I come from a litter of 15! I love to play with my not so big brother Scofield the Maine Coon and my yellow Labradane brother Liam. My favorite thing to do is swim in the bathtub, until I don’t fit anymore. I’m going to be a big boy! I have lots of energy and love to play. But the best part of the day is snuggling up in bed with mommy, daddy and my brothers. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

There’s no shame in asking for help to complete a project. Some homeowners may underestimate the scope of a project until it’s too late. Asking family, friends or neighbors for help might be the only way to get a stalled project back on track. Certain home improvement projects may not require advanced skills, and even friends or family with little or no home improvement experience can pitch in to complete such projects. When more advanced projects stall, homeowners may want to hire contractors to complete the work. If budgets have not left much room for hiring a contractor, homeowners can perform some of the labor on their own.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Switch to LED light bulbs. Some LED light bulbs have a lifespan of up to 10 years, and are 80 to 90 percent more efficient than incandescent bulbs. They are generally more environmentally friendly than CFLs and safer, too, since they produce less heat. The return on investment is excellent, as LED bulbs often pay for themselves through energy savings within the first year.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp.com, living branches should comprise at least two-thirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. However, always prune minimally to avoid damaging the tree.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Count to 10 if you must, but don’t lose your temper, despite that person’s (you know who!) efforts to goad you into reacting. Your restraint will pay off in a big way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week finds you in a sociable mood, ready and eager to enjoy the company of family and friends. It’s also a good time to seek out and renew old friendships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Patience is called for as you await a decision about that project you’re eager to launch. Meanwhile, try to set aside more time to share with that special person in your life. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Avoid becoming involved in a workplace dispute early in the week by insisting both sides submit their stands to a neutral arbitrator. Things begin to cool off by Thursday. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It promises to be a busy but productive week for the Big Cat. The pace slows by Friday, allowing you to catch up on matters you put aside but that now need your attention. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suddenly disruptive family situation is best handled with a cool, calm and collected response. Wait until things settle to let off all that pent-up emotional steam. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your practical side dominates the week as you reassess your finances to make some sensible adjustments in what you plan to spend and what you expect to save. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected meeting with a former colleague opens some interesting possibilities. But you need to press for full disclosure before making a decision. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent flurry of activity eases by midweek, giving you time to readjust your disrupted schedule and make new plans for a weekend getaway. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re usually the one who gives advice. But now it’s time to open yourself up to counsel from friends who have your best interests at heart. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might find resistance to your call for a full inquiry into a workplace problem. But by week’s end even the most rigid naysayers begin to come around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recurring problem surfaces once again. Maybe it’s time you used your creative talents to help you find a new approach to resolving it once and for all. BORN THIS WEEK: You are guided in what you do both by your intelligence and your emotions. An acting career would suit you quite well. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Girl Scouts of WNY Announces Danielle Nahas as 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout by Susan Cook Girl Scouts of Western New York are proud to announce Danielle Nahas of Spencerport, NY, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Nahas’ project, Helping Youth Meet Their Potential, involved creating a book for independent living targeted at young adults in at-risk situations. Nahas partnered with the Center for Youth in Rochester, which offers help and support for teens and youth who are considered to be at risk, such as those who have run away from home or have an unstable family. Knowing the youths would struggle to find an adult to support them as they transitioned to independent living, Nahas hoped her book would provide tips and serve as a guide to get them started. The book’s content included easy cooking recipes (with many accessible items at the Center for Youth’s cabinet), laundry tips, first aid information, and other useful advice.

Nahas stated, “I can empathize with this age group about how hard it is to start transferring into adulthood. However, I do have a good support system in my life and at home so I can only imagine how much harder it would be for those who do not have this to start a new part of their life.” Nahas also commented, “Girl Scouts has made me gain a greater appreciation for volunteering and making an impact on other people’s lives. I have continued these values into college where I am a part of a service organization that requires 15 hours of service a semester. I enjoyed this so much that I am now a part of the philanthropy committee. I hope that I can always help others in college and even into my career.”

Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers.

The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

Signs of atrial fibrillation — and how to treat it Palpitations of the heart or uncomfortable sensations in the chest can be distressing. Thoughts of heart attack may come to mind, and that anxiety can only exacerbate the situation. While heart attack might be the first thing people think of when experiencing chest discomfort, atrial fibrillation may be to blame for such feelings. Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib, is a quivering or irregular heartbeat that may lead to heart-related complications. The American Heart Association says that at least 2.7 million Americans are living with AFib. Although treatable, without proper diagnosis, AFib may lead to blood clots, stroke and even heart failure. Many people with AFib experience no symptoms at all and are unaware they have it until it is discovered during a physical examination. For those who experience symptoms, The Mayo Clinic lists these as some of the more common: • Palpitations, which can be sensations of a flip-flopping in the chest or even a racing feeling. • Fatigue • Reduced ability to exercise • Lightheadedness • Chest pain or shortness of breath • Dizziness and weakness

AFib is more common among people with clogged arteries or diabetes and may develop following valve surgery. AFib also is more common in people with coronary heart disease. As a person ages, his or her risk for AFib increases. Stress also can be a major factor in triggering AFib, according to StopAfib.org.

A MATTER OF SAFETY In societies less advanced than ours, it’s not uncommon to read stories in worldwide media involving individuals being buried alive after the local authorities have incorrectly deemed them to be dead. The possibility of a premature burial occurring today in this country is nearly impossible, because a medical determination of death and a death certificate are requirements for burial. However, centuries ago, when comatose and unconscious individuals were not so easily distinguishable from the dead, it was possible for U.S. citizens to be buried alive. Consequently, so-called “safety coffins” were developed, which had devices (a string attached from the hand of the buried person to an aboveground bell) that would enable prematurely buried individuals to convey their status to passersby. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. Honoring the life of your loved one means you value the relationship you shared. We look forward to helping you decide how to celebrate that bond and honor the unique person you’ve lost. To learn more about our services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. “People who matter are most aware that everyone else does, too...” ~ Malcom S. Forbes When anyone achieves a position of prestige, authority or public adulation, that person might be expected to become quite indifferent to the opinions of “ordinary people.” This is seldom true. A few conceited snobs may be carried away with the thrill of their own fame but the people who really matter never forget that it is the high regard of the “little people” to which they owe their success. The bigger the person… the more he matters… the more likely he is to recognize the importance of the least of the rest of us. Our staff keeps well-informed on benefits available from Social Security, Veteran’s programs, insurance and other sources. We can assist you in determining those you may qualify for.

Beware of Lyme Disease Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by the bite of an infected deer tick. Ticks can be hard to see, as they may only be about the size of a pin-head. Since Lyme disease first became reportable in 1986, over 95,000 cases have been confirmed in New York State. Cases peak in the summer months. Lyme disease is very serious and can become crippling or debilitating if not properly diagnosed and treated with antibiotics. Serious risks from Lyme disease can be reduced if the tick is removed within 36 hours. Anyone who plays or works outside is at an increased risk. Ticks most commonly live in cool, moist environments, and can be found in tall grassy areas, garden areas, around shrubs and in wooded areas. The public can be at risk while mowing lawns, picking up leaves, or other outdoor activities. Deer, birds, mice, and other animals can transport ticks into your yard. There are several things you can do to protect yourself and your family from tick bites. Below are some basic tips to follow: • Keep your lawn mowed and cut down brushy areas. • Avoid areas that may be infested such as, tall, grassy, moist areas. • Use protective measures. If you know you will be walking in tall grass wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks and shirt into your pants. Also, try to wear light color clothing so that ticks are more visible. Wear light colored gloves & a hat to protect your head. • Apply insect repellents that contain DEET or Permethrin to clothes and exposed skin according to the manufacturer’s directions. A single springtime application of an acaracide (tick pesticide) in your yard, such as bifenthin, can greatly reduce the number of ticks. • Perform a tick check on yourself, your pets and your children when finished with outside work or play. • If a tick is found, do not apply mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or heat. Use fine-tipped tweezers to remove the tick. Contact your doctor if there are concerns about incomplete tick removal or if a rash or flu-like symptoms develop. By following these guidelines, you can help protect yourself and your family from Lyme disease. For any other questions, or concerns please contact the Livingston County Department of Health at 243-7280 or visit their website at www.livingstoncounty.us/doh.htm.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: My dental hygienist recommends rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs after flossing. Lately I have heard the using too much hydrogen peroxide can be harmful. What are your thoughts? -- T.W. ANSWER: Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antiseptic that has some usefulness for household objects; however, I don’t recommend it as an oral rinse. It is too toxic to tissues. In a 1993 study, even hydrogen peroxide solutions diluted to half and quarter strengths caused damage to mucous membranes and caused “overwhelmingly negative subjective reactions.” Thus they were not recommended for oral care. A regular mouthwash is a much better choice, and your dentist can prescribe a medicated mouthwash if needed. Incidentally, I don’t recommend hydrogen peroxide for cleaning cuts and abrasions, either. It isn’t effective at inhibiting bacterial growth. I recommend careful cleaning with mild soap and water or saline and an antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a blood-borne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy by an ophthalmologist, whom I saw for an eye exam recently. Would you please tell me more about this disease? Is there any treatment? What can I expect in the future? It is getting harder to read and do close work. -- N.O. ANSWER: Fuchs’ dystrophy is a condition of older eyes, which happens when the cells in the innermost lining of the cornea (the translucent, colorless front part of the eye) degenerate, causing, initially, deposits in the cornea and later swelling of the cornea. The disease has a complex genetic pattern of inheritance, and tends to progress slowly. Treatments include soft contact lenses to “bandage” the cornea, and eyedrops. Transplant surgery of the affected lining of the cornea (called Descemet’s membrane), or the whole cornea, is the definitive treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Thank you so much to the kind woman at our local pool store who gave me a reference for a pool contractor. We have a nearly new pool from a friend of the family; it was brand new & up for 1 year & taken down for family business needs. We were left in the dust with another contractor after we made arrangements, including the permit & contract, to install the pool at our home. Afterwards, we couldn't find anyone willing to drive out of Monroe County or who would be 'possibly' available by late July. I called your reference (Greg) on Friday, who came to our house to survey the site & pool equipment. He said everything was in perfect shape & that he would get us installed this week. Kindness is hard to find. Thank you again for approaching me at the pool store & helping our family.

Every day we entrust our children to “strangers” and expect them to return home safe each night. These adults have been hired by our school district. This means they have been thoroughly checked and are deemed as safe adults. When teachers, counselors, and bus drivers make decisions and rules to keep our children safe they should not be questioned. When

On June 8th, my husband and I were having lunch at the Dutch Hollow Restaurant in East Avon. The waitress had picked up our dirty plates and we thought she picked up our bill by mistake to. We asked about the bill only to be told that someone had paid for our meal. This was so unexpected but so appreciated. I have done this for others in the past, and now I know how they must have felt. We were grateful and blessed. Many thanks to whoever you are. I will again pay it forward! God Bless, Robin and Rick Dieffenbacher I would like to thank the hardworking women of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Geneseo

these trusted adults make decisions for the best interest of all the children in their care it may not always seem fair. I know we all think our children ‘can do no wrong’, but with age comes wisdom. We need to support our district staff. If problems arise while your child is learning and growing have the decency to communicate with the district staff. The adults in our community need to come together to help raise respectful children. To the lady with the wheelchair that fell out of the container – Yes I am the lady who disappointed you by being unhelpful and morally lacking. This ministry and the cheerful attitude they display bless many lives. I want these women to know how truly appreciated they are. Additionally, kudos to the gentleman (or men) who mow the church property....it is a huge commitment of time and resources and the property always looks very nice. Just a comment to a "Brighter Side" thank you note to many individuals, including Kevin and Nancy. Those 3 car seats are not supposed to be used anymore! Never compromise a child's safety! Sorry that I was physically unable to be more helpful to you. As you can see it is not always the way it looks. Hoping this note makes you feel more positive about how people act towards you. Wishing you a great day!!

Anytime that you're in an accident the Integrity of the materials that make up the car seat have been compromised and should no longer be used! You simply add the car seats to the insurance claim and they will pay to replace them. I hope this message reaches many people that will in turn share with others.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

QUAKER PARROTS have become popular in recent years. They are natural clowns. For many owners they can make wonderful, loving and affectionate friends. While males ”talk” better than females, they are teachable, with patience. They are best for bird lovers who do not want a ’giant parrot’ variety. Their diet is bird seed mixture, fruits, and leafy greens. They ought not overdo it with sunflower seeds, peanuts, millet so as not to gain weight. Am unable to take care of ”Kabbah” so am looking for a good home for her (with proper cage). Cost negotiable. 585-582-1137.
