AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls. It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Jax, a male neutered Min Pin Mix is looking for a home without cats and children. He is 5 years old, housebroken and likes some other dogs. Jax needs to be with someone who knows the breed. To adopt Jax or any other available dogs please contact:

How to protect your pets from extreme heat Let dogs inside. Doghouses might not be as prevalent as they once were, but many owners still keep doghouses in their backyards so their four-legged friends have a place to relax outdoors on lazy afternoons. But doghouses can be similar to parked cars on especially hot days, making rising temperatures feel even hotter. Let dogs hang out inside in an air conditioned room on hot days to reduce their risk of heatstroke.

My name is Midge. I am a rescue cat that lives with my human Mom and Dad along with 2 cat sisters, Alley and June. I enjoy kicking back and watching cat TV. I make Mom and Dad laugh daily when I wrestle with June and chase Alley! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

In medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, salt and 2 tablespoons of the sugar. With pastry blender or fingertips, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Set aside. In 1-quart saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/3 cup of the sugar and water. Cook, stirring, until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes. Spoon strawberries into ungreased 1-1/2 quart casserole and pour hot sugar mixture over berries. Immediately add milk to reserved flour mixture and stir until soft dough of drop-biscuit consistency forms, adding more milk if necessary. Drop by large tablespoons in 10 mounds evenly spaced over berries. Sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons sugar. Bake at 450º∞F until browned, 20 to 25 minutes. Serve at once or while still quite warm, accompanied with vanilla ice cream if desired. Makes 4 servings.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Leave work behind. The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an average of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience.

Why buy life insurance? Facing one’s mortality and the prospect of leaving family members behind is not always easy. Death, financial security and planning for the future are all difficult subjects, but planning ahead can make matters much easier in the long run. Life insurance needs frequently come up when making plans, and many people find that purchasing a life insurance policy is a worthwhile investment. Life insurance holds an important place in overall financial planning. One of the most apparent benefits of life insurance is that it will provide a considerable sum of cash upon the insured’s death, which can be put toward the cost of funeral arrangements, housing and dependent care. Beyond end-of-life bills and care, life insurance can offer other advantages, say the experts at Allstate Insurance Company. Life insurance can provide a family with a financial safety net. When a beneficiary is named, life insurance can serve as an inheritance for that person or people. Heirs may face estate taxes after a loved one dies, and life insurance benefits may help offset all or a portion of the costs.

Business owners also can use life insurance policies to their advantage. Including life insurance with the list of other benefits offered to prospective employees can entice topnotch candidates. Sole proprietors may use life insurance as a business continuation plan so that insurance proceeds can keep the business in the black until it is sold or a replacement owner is found.

There may be benefits to life insurance while a person is living as well. The life insurance information site Term Life 2 Go says that, depending on the policy, life insurance can be borrowed against to pay off debt, buy a house or live off of dividends from the life insurance investment. This can provide a source of supplemental retirement income.

Shopping for life insurance requires careful research and an understanding of the products available. Consumers should have a thorough understanding of term and whole life policies, what premiums will cost, what the death benefit will pay, and if there are any living benefits. For example, living benefits may cover some costs for chronically or terminally ill people.

Gateway Financial advisors say that many life insurance plans Working with an experienced life insurance advisor can help are extremely flexible and can be modified as needs change. Death benefits may be decreased if desired, and premiums can people navigate the types of policies available to them. be skipped, reduced or increased.

Did You Know? An individual retirement account, or IRA, is a type of account men and women who meet certain eligibility requirements can open to save money for their retirement. Unlike a 401(k), a type of retirement account that is provided by an employer, an IRA must be opened by an individual.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Before you adventurous Arians charge right into those new projects, take a little time to learn where you’ll be going so you can avoid getting lost before you get there. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your time is devoted to career demands through much of the week. But Venus, who rules your sign, might be planning how (and with whom) you’ll spend your weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be put off by the surprising turn in the way your project is developing. You’ve invested enough time in it to know how to make all the necessary adjustments. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) The work week goes smoothly for the most part. But a weekend visit to a place in your past could hold surprises for your future, especially where romance is involved. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A sudden attack of shyness for the usually loquacious Lion could be a sign that deep down you’re not sure enough about what (or whom) you had planned to talk up in public. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Deal with that job-related problem on-site -- that is, at the workplace. Avoid taking it home, where it can spoil those important personal plans you’ve made. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to let those favorable comments about your business dealings be known to those in a position to be helpful. Don’t hide your light; let it shine. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Avoid added pressure to finish a project on deadline by steering clear of distractions. To put it somewhat poetically: Time for fun -- when your tasks are done. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be uneasy about an offer from a longtime colleague. But before you reject it, study it. You might be surprised at what it actually contains. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Deal firmly with a difficult family matter. It’s your strength they need right now. You can show your emotions when the situation begins to ease up. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A recent dispute with some coworkers might not have been completely resolved. But other colleagues will be only too happy to offer support of your actions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Let go of that Piscean pride long enough to allow someone to help you with a surprising development. That could make it easier for you to adjust to the change. BORN THIS WEEK: Your willingness to open up to possibilities is why people like you are often among our most popular political leaders. (c) 2018 King Features Syndicate

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Was Son Right to Ignore His Doctor’s Advice? --DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? -- V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve suffered from essential tremor for 16 years. I take 500 mg of primidone and 40 mg of propranolol twice daily. I’ve gradually increased the dose over the years, and the combination works quite well. What is the highest dose of these medications that I can take? Also, are there any new drugs on the market that have been proven to help? -- S.S. ANSWER: Primidone, a medication indicated for seizures, often is used off-label for essential tremor. The normal dose for essential tremor is 250-500 mg at night, but doses up to 750 mg sometimes are used. For seizures, the highest recommended dose is 2,000 mg, so although yours is at the high end of normal for essential tremor (“essential,” by the way, simply means we don’t know what is causing it; it isn’t essential for anything), you still are at a dose that’s well below the safe limit. I suspect that because you have been on it for so long, your body is used to this dose. The usual starting dose is 25 mg. Propranolol is used for many conditions, including high blood pressure and preventing migraines, but its use in essential tremor also is off-label, meaning that the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug for use for this condition. “Off-label” doesn’t necessarily mean your prescription is wrong or dangerous, only that it hasn’t been approved by the FDA. In your case, the combination of primidone and propranolol frequently is used and recommended in the medical literature. For essential tremor, experts have recommended doses up to 320 mg per day, but the dose can be limited by slow heart rate or low blood pressure. If you are doing well, there is no reason to change. Other medications frequently used for essential tremor include gabapentin and topiramate. There also are surgical treatments, deep brain stimulation, gamma knife radiation and ultrasound for resistant cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Thank you to the Avon Garden Club for the beautiful flowers in the planters throughout the village and around the park. You all do a beautiful job. I especially love the flower cart. Thank you to the village crew for your help hanging the military banners and keeping our village looking so nice. The Memorial Day parade was great as usual. Thanks! On Thursday evening, June 14, after shopping, we stopped at Burger King on Eastern Blvd. in Canandaigua for a light supper meal. When we went to pay, we were informed that the gentleman ahead of us had already picked up the tab. What a wonderful gesture! We did not catch his name or address, so we can't acknowledge him personally. But we would at

I recently enjoyed a local town parade. But there was one float I didn't find appropriate. It had heavy metal music playing loudly, people with painted, blood-like faces, and other gory features. I know this is advertising for your Halloween party, but please, less creepy stuff ? There are children watching and I find some of the

In our 70+ years on this planet, we have never experienced anything like this before. Mike and Gerda Speziale, Naples, NY I have been running on the canal towpath for years and am finally getting around to publicly thanking the courteous town landscape crews that mow the grass along the towpath and in Perinton Park. I very much appreciate the way you pause your machines when pedestrians and bicyclists approach, not resuming until we are out of the line of fire from your grass

cutting equipment. Thank you! Many thanks to whoever turned my husband’s treasured sun glasses lost at the Bristol Fun Day on the 10th! They belonged to his father who died many years ago. The Ray Ban glasses in the battered original case were anything but impressive at first sight, so we were delighted when we called the Bristol Town Hall to learn they were found and safe. My husband was grieving the loss. What a tribute to kindness. Many blessings to the finder and the Town Hall Staff. Sincere Thanks to two individual Good Samaritans, who driving by on a very rainy and windy night, stopped to help us pull down a large tree branch in our yard that had broken and was

wife's birthday to come to this place. Our waitress was very friendly for the first 15 minutes lol. After that all went to bananas!!! Everything went wrong from A to Z to say the least. We are not the only customers who had this very bad experience. Our friends had it all. They never celebrated my wife's birthday with me. The owner was embarrassed by it. Not easy being a waitress I know but I still gave 20% tips…Come on.

We work so very hard to endure life's journey. Therefore, we want to go out to a very nice dinner with our hard earned money to have a great meal and service with the spouse and IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK? We have heard bad reviews about a local small town restaurant that specializes in Prime Ribs near our home, but we decided to give it a chance. I've made reservation for my

Just read with great agreement, the "Vent" of June 1, 2018, concerning residents in his town not taking care of their property. We too, live in a Rochester area town. We have watched as older residents, pass on or move away. The "new" residents DO NOT take care of their homes and/or yards. We have called our Town,

Yards not mowed and trash just sitting by the roadside. Most do not have a trash collector. They expect the town to pick up garbage. We may have no choice, but to move out if things don't improve. This is getting crazy. Please, please people, take pride in our neighborhood!!! People still burn their garbage in Livingston County. It’s not allowed!! Does anyone know who I can contact? I have my windows open to air out my home and have to smell their garbage! Need help to give me information on who to call.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS

Puzzle Answers

A farmers’ market can be an exciting and flavorful social gathering place for families and groups of friends, as well as a great place to meet other members of the community. Sometimes farmers also mingle with local artisans, so the market can be a one-stop-shopping locale for locally produced food and art.

Dansville WWII Hero Honored By Lisa Hill Senator Catharine Young (R, C, I - 57th District), presented medals, including the Bronze Star, to the family of the late Arthur Veeder during a ceremony Saturday, June 9th at the Daniel Goho American Legion Post in Dansville.

Go Figure!

Attending the ceremony were Mr. Veeder’s widow, Velma, his daughter Sharon Sebok, grandson, Carson Nelson, and several other family members and friends. Mr. Veeder grew up in Cohocton and was half way through his senior year at Cohocton High School when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in January of 1944. He served as a rifleman in the 260th Infantry Regiment of the 65th Infantry Division. After arriving in Germany in March of 1945, his regiment endured 55 straight days of combat as the U.S. Army advanced into Germany. Corporal Veeder received a Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious service during the Central European Campaign in 1945. Senator Young presented his family with his Bronze Star and other medals during the ceremony. “It was my honor to present Corporal Veeder’s family with the military medals he earned during his courageous service to our nation during World War II,” Senator Young said. “We cannot imagine the horrors Corporal Veeder faced during combat but, he faced them for us. He faced them to preserve America, democracy and freedom.”

“We can never adequately repay veterans like Corporal Veeder for their bravery and sacrifice,” Senator Young said. “But we can In addition to the Bronze Star, Corporal honor them with our eternal gratitude and Veeder received the Good Conduct Medal, the admiration.”

Kris was born on January 24, 1947 in Rochester, New York. She went to school at St. Agnes and graduated cum laude. Later she attended SUNY Brockport and graduated in 1969. She married Gary in 1968 and lived in Spencerport for five years before moving to Henrietta to start a family. She taught at various catholic grammar schools and held several jobs in retail, tax preparation with H & R Block, and the home health care industry. In 2011 she moved out to Livonia to live close to her local son and his family. She enjoyed pleasant afternoons on her deck watching the deer scamper through the yard and her grandchildren play across the street. Kris was dearly loved and will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her warm smile, big heart, and the way she brightened her family and friends’ lives will be greatly missed.

Life is really simple, but w e insist on making it complicated. - Confucius

A Gathering to Celebrate Kris’s Life will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the World Wildlife Fund, 1250 24th Street NW, Washington, DC 20037.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

“The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up…” ~ J. M. Power What a dreary world it would be if we had no dreams of the things to which we aspire. It is our dreams that shape our goals. We imagine the situations that would make us happy, then direct our efforts toward making those dreams come true. The important thing is that we recognize that achievement is a two part program. First, we dream of the goals we desire. Then we work as hard as we can to make those dreams come true. Unless we wake up and put part two into effect, our dreams are worthless. Our years of experience enables us to provide funerals that are beautiful as well as comforting. You can safely place your trust in us.

THE SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH BENEFIT Upon the death of his or her husband or wife, the surviving spouse who is living in the same household may be entitled to receive a one-time lump sum benefit of $255. If there is no spouse, a dependent child (generally age 18 or under) may then be eligible for this one-time death benefit. In order to qualify, the deceased worker must have been considered to be “currently insured,” which means he or she had at least six quarters of earnings covered by Social Security withholding during the full 13-quarter period prior to his or her death. It is recommended that a death be immediately reported to the Social Security Administration in order to get the needed paperwork. Usually, the funeral director will report the person’s death to Social Security. You’ll need to give the deceased’s Social Security number to the funeral director so they can make the report. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time of sharing good memories and experiences with family and friends. To learn more about our funeral and memorial services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS In some instances, whether it’s a byproduct of poor property grade or sloping land, water can pool regardless of how well the gutter system is working. Determine where the problem is and speak with a landscaper to see if there are any plants that thrive in moist conditions. The roots of these plants can protect against soil erosion and may absorb enough water to guard against puddling. In addition, amending the soil with organic matter, pea gravel or another coarse aggregate can prevent water pooling.

HOW TO KEEP CHICKEN FROM STICKING TO YOUR GRILL According to the grill manufacturer Weber, the keys to grilling chicken are temperature and time. But even cooks who have paid close attention to the temperature of their grills and the time their chicken spends over a hot flame have no doubt fallen victim to chicken that sticks to the grill. This can affect the quality of a meal and make post-grilling cleanup that much more difficult. To prevent sticking, Weber advises cooks to put a light coating of olive oil and seasoning directly on the chicken prior to putting it on the grill. Once the chicken has been dressed, make sure the grill temperature remains around 425 F to 450 F. Chicken will stick to a grill if the temperature is too high, so pay close attention to the temperature at all times. Once the chicken has been placed on the grill, allow each side to cook for roughly 4.5 minutes. If the chicken is difficult to flip or remove from the grill, close the lid and allow it to cook for one additional minute.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.

Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
