Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi, my name is Skitz. I am a 14-month-old Ginger and Mommy and Daddy rescued my brother and me when we were babies in Florida. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Jalapeño Peach Salsa
4 boneless chicken breasts 2/3 cup diced peaches 2/3 cup diced tomatoes 3 tablespoons finely diced, seeded jalapeño, (keep a few seeds if you like salsa with some heat) 1 1/2 tablespoon chopped red onion 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 1/2 teaspoon lime juice 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon chili powder Preheat grill to medium/high heat or preheat oven to 400 degrees. If grilling, place breasts on oiled grates and flip at the 6-8 minute mark, depending on the thickness of the chicken. If cooking in the oven, place the chicken breast on a parchment-lined or greased baking sheet for roughly 20-25 minutes. To make the salsa, combine the diced peaches, tomatoes, jalapeño, onion, lime juice, and cilantro into a bowl. Mix together then add the cumin and chili powder, mixing agin to combine.

Live comfortably on less Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren’t in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a longstanding trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to reenter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one’s late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that. • Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of home-related expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housing-related expenses. • Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals’ finances. That’s why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to long-term care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.
• Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive. A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out. • Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but empty-nesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly one-third of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions. Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty might upset some people, but you inevitably win more admirers for having the courage to tell the truth when others are more likely to scramble for cover. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A trusted colleague sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A welcome piece of good news helps clear the air in a family situation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new opportunity sounds promising. But watch out for any conditions that might be attached. Before making a decision, ask that each one be explained in detail. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be distracted by promises of good times, yet you ultimately reach the goals you set for yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Bodybuilder Son Takes Steroids --DEAR DR. ROACH: My 23-year-old son is a bodybuilder, and much to my dismay, he takes steroids. I know he takes testosterone, and I don’t know what else. How will this affect him? -- Anon. ANSWER: Testosterone has many bad long-term effects, and he really should stop it. As a resident, I took care of a seemingly very healthy, very muscular 30-year-old man with terrible heart failure due to a heart attack. Many similar reports have led to suspicion that steroids taken for bodybuilding increase risk of heart attack and even sudden death. There appear to be many other long-term effects, including neuropsychiatric effects of anger and aggressive behavior. They also may reduce sperm count and affect fertility. I don’t know what else he may be taking, but I would strongly urge him to evaluate all supplements carefully. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a healthy female until I had an injury to my back. I experience pain and tingling in my right side, going down the back of my right leg. Sitting is especially painful, as is standing in one place for too long. Now the pain has started in my left side also. I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, physical therapy, epidural shots and pain pills. I also had two laminectomies (decompression surgery on the spinal canal) on L4/L5 last year, with no relief from the pain. Upon seeing another neurosurgeon, I have been told that I have some large Tarlov cysts (1 cm). There does not seem to be a great amount of information about these on the internet, plus I am not sure what information out there is accurate. One doctor on the internet is all about having surgery on them. The neurosurgeon I am seeing does not want to do surgery just yet. He says that surgery does not always bring about pain relief. Can you share some information about these Tarlov cysts and what can be done for the continued back and leg pain? Dealing with this for several years has caused me much emotional distress and depression. -- F.H. ANSWER: Tarlov cysts, also called perineurial cysts, occur along the lining of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In one study, in 500 people with MRI scans, 23 had Tarlov cysts, but only five had any symptoms from them. In this study, the cysts were drained by a needle, which relieved the pain, although the pain usually came back as the cysts refilled with fluid. I agree with your neurosurgeon that surgery on these does not guarantee success. Since you have had two surgeries and multiple types of therapies that haven’t worked, I can understand your frustration. It might be worth talking to the neurosurgeon about a trial of draining the cysts to see if that helps the symptoms. The booklet on back problems gives an overview of the causes and treatments for the most-common back maladies. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Have you paid attention to the amazingly beautiful flowers down Main St. in Canandaigua? The garden carts in Bloomfield? Thank you to the workers/volunteers who have kept all the flowers watered and cared for this summer. You are appreciated! As a Chaplain volunteer in the Continuing Care at Thompson Hospital, I am truly blessed to visit the elderly in the Dementia/Alzheimer’s wing. It is SO important that the elderly people have visitations. Even if their minds are gone or going they still like and need to see family or friends, children, pets, a

bouquet of flowers, Etc. Most residents have had to give up their independence, their car, their home, and perhaps even their spouse. Please take the time, take your children or grandchildren to visit the elderly and show them love and that someone cares. Talk to them about their professions, and their lives. There is a great “wealth” about the elderly and the lives they have lived. It will not only bless your day, it will bless their days. We would like to thank Seth Graham of Seth Graham Design at 3105 Main St., Caledonia, for creating such a beautiful Memorial video of
me which made me slam my brakes and lean on the horn. You looked at me as if you did nothing wrong!! You may have a death wish but I sure as heck don't!!!! This intersection is bad enough without inconsiderate idiots like you making it worse!!!! Next time, continue your left turn and proceed to the street on the right, approx. two car lengths away and turn around in someone's driveway or in the driveway on the left which is the same distance. Remember, you are not the only person on the road AND LOOK before you turn!!! I returned home from work only to find my neighbor behind me on this dead end street had company. How did I
our mother/wife/MeMe Donna Brew. Seth's compassion and ideas were truly heartfelt and appreciated. He's absolutely a talented young man. Thanks again, Seth, for keeping our memories alive through this beautiful video!
Thank you Kelly for volunteering your time to put up the new letters on the Opera Block building. Your dedication to making the Avon community look beautiful is greatly appreciated by everyone living in or visiting our Town.
know? The cars parked partially on my lawn were a dead giveaway. I pulled up and asked the lady with the baby, can you not park on my lawn? Well now my neighbor claims they have to move, because they have neighbor problems. Problems like, the dog barking, putting your overflowing tote to the road on Friday for Tuesday pick up so it leaves a mess all over? Problems like not mowing by your tree out front that still has Christmas lights on it? Problems like the cat spraying the garage and taking a dump in the flower bed? Yes that is a neighbor problem. Do you need boxes for your move or a good Realtor? Let me know! I would love to help you out so I don't have a neighbor problem.
Thank you Crosby’s Gas & Mini Market -Caledonia! And thank you to the person who found my billfold insert and the employee who returned the insert to me by mail. It was appreciated very much!!!!
How can you be so shameful? For the past 3 weeks in our quiet town you have stolen things off of porches, have tried breaking into homes of elders and broke windows. In our yard, your picture is being taken and we have security alarms. What is wrong with people like you? We have reported this to all the authorities! You know who you are, so stop and get a job instead of depending on us! If you get caught, you may not like the outcome and you may get a new home!

He is survived by his wife, adult children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother, three sisters and several nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends. Dan will be sorely missed by all who loved him.
Laurie Ann Broadwell August 13, 2018 Laurie Ann Broadwell, 57, of Bloomfield, New York, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2018, in their family home. Born on September 16, 1960, to Margot and Don Cole, Laurie was a loving and caring individual who had an uncanny ability to touch the lives of all who knew her in a deep and positive way. She truly lived life to the fullest, whether it was on her Harley alongside her husband Bill, yearly camping trips to Watkins Glenn, sharing a love of the Christmas holiday with her daughter Amy, or through simple pleasures like snuggling her dog Trixie and cat Nook, and spending time with friends and family around a fire in their backyard.
August 8, 2018 Rochester, NY/Essex Fells, NJ: Madge passed peacefully on August 8, 2018 at age 100. Predeceased by her husband Lawrence Porter Carrington, her son Lawrence Porter Carrington Jr. “Skip”, and her sisters, Elaine Wilder Bandell and Shirley Wilder Loehr. Survived by her daughter Dianne Carrington-Plano and her husband Joe Plano of Livonia; granddaughters, Susan Faber-Plano and Karen Stotz; great-grandsons, Kyrksen and Alex. Also survived by her daughter-in-law Susie Carrington of CA. Madge was born on June 20, 1918, in Verona, New Jersey, to Harry and Louise Wilder. She was the second of three daughters. Madge grew up in Verona, attended secretarial school and worked in an insurance and real estate company. She met her husband, Lawrence Porter Carrington, on a blind date on the Fourth of July. Larry, the cousin of one of Madge’s girlfriends, was in the Navy and visiting New Jersey on leave at the time. What became a wartime romance led to their marriage in 1944. The couple made their new home in Essex Falls, New Jersey, and had two children, son Lawrence Porter Carrington Jr. and daughter Dianne. Dianne recalls that her brother was always known as “Skip,” because when he was born, the nurse handed him to Madge and said, “Here’s your little skipper,” referencing his father’s service in the Navy. Madge, a homemaker after her children were born, was a hostess who loved entertaining and throwing parties. She was a golfer, theater lover and traveler she and her husband, Larry, enjoyed trips to Europe and within the U.S., including Hawaii. After Larry’s death, Madge moved to the Rochester area to be close to Dianne. She embraced this new chapter in her life with enthusiasm, making friends and taking in many GEVA performances and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concerts, especially POPS. Madge lived at the Friendly Home for the last seven years and always was a friendly and social “people person.”
Laurie’s life should always be celebrated and remembered as one filled with laughter and love. The memories she created with friends growing up to the students who rode her bus and knew her as “Miss Laurie,” she loved everyone unconditionally. Happiness was a big theme throughout her life, and Laurie shared that passion with her beloved husband Bill, who together made their house a home to anyone who stepped foot inside. In addition to her only child Amy McKearney, when she married Bill, she was blessed with three more, Devin, Ciera and Lauren. For those who knew her, Laurie enjoyed going on adventures and taking pictures of nature and scenery along the way. She had an eye for capturing beautiful moments that others may have overlooked. It goes without saying that no one will ever look at a dragonfly the same way now that she is gone. Sometimes she would wonder why certain things would happen, but she was a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Even with her illness, she said there was a reason but wished she knew what it was. They say the light that shines the brightest burns out twice as fast. Although she is no longer with us in person, the light that Laurie has given to so many people will forever shine in their hearts. Laurie is survived by her husband Bill Broadwell; daughter Amy McKearney (Kevin McKearney) of South Carolina; step-daughter Devin Broadwell (Kyle Jensen) of Waterloo, New York; step-daughter Ciera Broadwell (Kraig Wright) of Hawaii; and newborn grandson Camden McKearney. She is also survived by sister Cindy Fernandez and niece Tiffany LaPrade of Newark, New York; and nephew Brandon Bloom of Arkansas. She is preceded in death by parents Margot and Don Cole and step-daughter Lauren Broadwell.
Funeral services will be held privately with interment in Essex Fells, NJ. Memorial contributions may be made in Madge’s Memory to the Friendly Home Memorial Fund, 3156 East Ave., Rochester, NY 14618.
A celebration of Laurie’s beautiful life will be held at 9154 State Route 5 & 20 in Bloomfield, New York, on Saturday, August 25, 2018. The gathering will start at 3 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. If you are having trouble finding directions to our home, where the celebration of her life will be held, enter 7-eleven in West Bloomfield into your GPS and we are located across the street. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

PERSONAL SERVICE FOR A UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL “Absence extinguishes small passions and increases grest ones, as the wind will blow out a candle and blow in a fire…” ~ La Rochefoucauld
This observation by the great French writer and moralist of the early 17th century, explains the apparent contradiction of the two old adages…”Out of sight, out of mind” and “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” If an attraction is but a passing fancy, it may very well be eliminated by a period of separation. But, if two people enjoy a great mutual love, an absence…even of prolonged duration…will only increase their devotion to one another. Thoughtful people may wish to make all arrangements for their own funeral services, well in advance of need. Financial aspects can also be pre-arranged. Out staff will discuss this with you, in your home if you prefer. Phone us, no obligation.

As people are increasingly seeking to bring a more personal touch to end-of-life services, they are looking for unique ways to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed. With this in mind, they are encouraged not only to compare the costs and goods offered by our funeral home, but also to inquire about how they can best represent the deceased. According to the National Funeral Directors Association 2017 Consumer Awareness and Preferences Study, nearly half of respondents report having attended a funeral at a non-traditional location, such as an outdoor setting or place that had some meaning in the life of the deceased. Making such arrangements can contribute significantly to the remembrance of a unique life. When it comes to personalizing a funeral or memorial service, your options are nearly unlimited. When you attend a funeral today, you are likely to see a photo display, a memorial wall, pieces of the deceased’s collections, or some other tangible collection of personal artifacts. To learn more about our funeral and memorial services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. GRANT AWARDED FOR NOVEL COMMUNITY HEALTH SOLUTIONS (NAPSI)—Recent research has revealed that community environments play a crucial role in health outcomes. People living just five miles apart can have a difference in life expectancy of more than 20 years. To help close the gap and improve life expectancy for everyone, the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke—the American Heart Association—is working within communities and offering up to $30,000 to find fresh ideas. Doctor’s Advice “I know the central role that social determinants of health play in our long-term risk of heart disease, stroke and other devastating illnesses. Even though heart disease and stroke are preventable, and we tell people what they need to do to reduce their risks, for many people, it’s not that easy. Knowing what to do and having access to what you need to do it are two different things,” explained Keith B. Churchwell, M.D., chair of the American Heart Association’s Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health Task Force and senior vice president, operations and executive director at the Heart and Vascular Center and Transplantation Center, Yale-New Haven Health. Finding Answers The grant-based initiative to identify innovative, clearly defined urban business solutions to drive community change to improve health and wellbeing is called the EmPOWERED To Serve Urban Health Accelerator™. Its goal is to increase healthy living behaviors, enhance the chain of survival, and cultivate community transformation by addressing such factors as inadequate housing, early childhood development and healthy food access. To that end, through the Accelerator, select candidates are awarded grants to activate critical projects that will improve urban community health. Applications from businesses with creative solutions to community issues that prevent people from having equal access to health can be made through June 30, 2018. Candidates must complete an application and upload a 90-second-or-less video at empoweredtoserve.org.

The evening will finish off with a free firework display, courtesy of McDonald’s, set to musical accompaniment, courtesy of the Skylighters. ␣␣␣␣Sunday will launch with breakfast at the Kiwanis stand and will delight visitors with the ever-popular Good Ol’ Boys Car Show which proudly displays a variety of vehicles from the beginning of the previous century to the present day. A free bicycle giveaway, featuring one boy’s bike and one girl’s bike, will take place in the afternoon at the Rotary stand. The Kids’ Area will open once again at noon, featuring the same favorites as yesterday as well as welcoming Mr. Scribbles and his interactive drawings. ␣␣␣␣The wine, beer and cider tent will also open again at noon, and musicians Paolo and Felice will be strolling through the festival, entertaining visitors with their songs. Winners of the lotteries and raffles will be announced later in the afternoon, and the entire festival will conclude at around 5pm. With several free activities for children and many vendors catering to adults, this festival is an enjoyable weekend event for the entire family.

Backyard Maintenance Tips For Summer (NAPS)—Summer is here and it’s time for backyard barbecues! Before your guests arrive, check these four backyard maintenance tasks off your to-do list to ensure your yard is looking good. Clean Your Barbecue To prevent food from sticking to your barbecue grills, rub cooking oil on the grates before you start. After you’re done barbecuing, use warm, soapy water to clean the grates with a wire brush. Give Outdoor Furniture a Pick-Me-Up With all furniture, check for wear and tear that may have occurred during winter. Clean plastic furniture and chair or couch cushions simply with a cloth or soft scrub brush dipped in a mix of water and dish detergent. Some outdoor cushions can be thrown in the washer so check the tags. Check Power Equipment Since power equipment most likely hasn’t been used in months, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. Some equipment may need to be lubricated to run smoothly again. Easily lubricate the moving parts of a lawn mower with WD-40 EZ-REACHTM. It has an 8-inch, flexible straw that bends and keeps its shape to get WD-40® Multi-Use Product into hard-to-reach places, like in and around the blade. Tidy Up Your Lawn Trim large plants, hedges and bushes that had a growth spurt during the spring, and remove dead limbs from trees. Remove leaves and other debris from the gutters around your home, and remove weeds from the lawn and garden. You may need to reseed some areas of your lawn as well. With the completion of these four tasks, guests will be enjoying your backyard barbecues all summer long. To see how WD-40 EZ-REACH can help you tackle other outdoor maintenance projects, visit WD40.com.

GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING Branches need to be trimmed properly to facilitate good healing. Trees will form a callus bark covering over cuts to keep out disease and decay, much as a scab forms over a person’s wound. Damaging the bark on a tree while pruning may interfere with that process.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

www.honeoyefallsmarketplace.com GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
