Each year since its debut 1951, the Naples Grape Festival has left festival goers wondering, “what else could they possibly make with grapes?” Yet, every year, there seems to be fun, new, grape-inspired creations to sample. The taste of grape in these culinary delights is not the vaguely grape-like flavor found in some artificial products; no, it is a rich, robust, hearty, locallygrown grape taste. There are the classic favorite grape pies as well as grape bars, grape cookies, grape ice cream, grape ices, grape fudge, grape cotton candy and many other treats with grape featured or added. The grapes used for these dishes are typically different than those you might find in a grocery store. Rather than seedless red or green grapes, for instance, you are likely to find quite a lot of locally grown Concord grapes as well as a few other local varieties such as Delaware and Niagara. These grapes usually come complete with seeds and a more intense flavor. However, there is more to this festival than a smorgasbord of grape goodies. Several food trucks will be creating unique dishes in the food court area, as well. Apart from food, Bristol Mountain will be running a zip line adventure next to the food court in the Naples High School parking lot area. Arts and craft vendors of all varieties will present their craftsmanship for sale on festival grounds. These “official vendors” have earned their place at the festival and have verified that their work is handmade and of high quality. Vendor goods run the gamut from fine art to home crafting, with items to appeal to nearly every taste while fitting almost any budget.
In addition to art, music has also been a longstanding feature of the Naples Grape Festival, and this year, guest musical artists will include Sarah Parker, Freightrain, Alison Pipitone Band and the Brian Lindsey Band on Saturday with Rhythm Flow, Alan Murphy, Miller and the Other Sinners and Aaron Lipp and Bobby Henrie on Sunday. As festival patrons soak in the tunes, patrons 21 and older will be welcome to sip on some wine in the wine tasting tent for a $15 admission fee. This year, the wine tasting tent will feature beverages from such Finger Lakes wineries and brew crafters as Victorianbourg Wine Estates, Thousand Islands Winery, Inspire Moore Winery, Pazdar Winery, Fulkerson Winery, Three Brothers Winery, Crooked Lake Winery, Arbor Hill Winery, Lakeland Winery, Lyon Smith Brewing, Rootstock Ciderworks. Of course, it does all come down to the grapes, and the well-respected, traditional grape pie contest will be held this year, also. Like the festival itself, grape pies also originated in the 1950s. The creation of the grape pie has been attributed to Irene Bouchard, a longtime resident of Naples, New York. Throughout the years, people of all ages have entered and won awards in this anonymous grape pie contest. Sometimes, grandparents, parents and even grandchildren of the same family will compete together, passing down the tradition of grape pie making from generation to generation. In fact, the Naples Grape Festival itself is very much a local, Finger Lakes wine country tradition in which all Finger Lakes area residents can take part while taking pride in our beautiful region.

Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-ityourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

OTHER HELPFUL INSECTS Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Common Pain Reliever Can Have Side Effects --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 44-year-old man with chronic headaches and migraines. Should I worry about the long-term effects of taking an NSAID (such as diclofenac) at least once a week? -- G.W. ANSWER: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are among the most commonly taken classes of drugs in the world, with 17 million Americans alone taking them daily. Although these drugs are generally safe, any medication has the potential for side effects. Typically, the higher the dose and the more frequently it is taken, the increased risk of side effects. So, a once-aweek dose would be expected to have a low side effect risk. Adverse effects from this class are among the most frequently seen in clinical medicine. Although they can affect multiple systems, let me briefly go over the side effects of NSAIDs on the GI tract, kidneys and heart. NSAIDs might affect the stomach, and although we think of ulcers, stomach pain without ulcers is more common. Ulcers happen most often in people who take higher doses for long periods of time. A history of ulcers, older age and use of other medications (steroids, warfarin, antiplatelet drugs like clopidogrel, or Plavix) increase the risk of ulcers and bleeding. NSAIDs also might affect the small bowel and colon, causing bleeding and diarrhea, among other symptoms. Again, these are most common in high doses for extended periods. NSAIDs can affect the kidneys, causing both acute and chronic kidney failure, but only in a few percent of people. Periodic blood and urine examination is appropriate for people who are on long-term NSAIDs. The risk of heart disease among people who use NSAIDs regularly is increased, but in people without known heart disease, the risk is small -- about one bad event, such as heart attack, stroke or episode of heart failure, per thousand people taking the medication for a year. I would advise you that the risk of any of these side effects is unlikely in someone taking the drug only once a week, but people who take these drugs every day should know about the potential harms. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: When I was 64, a cyst was found in my bladder. When the cyst was removed, it was found to be cancerous. My urologist wants me to continue to have an annual cystoscopy, which I do. I’m now 76 and in good health. Do you feel the annual cystoscopy is still necessary? -- C.K. ANSWER: Now that more people have had successful treatment of cancer, we are starting to learn about the risks they face in subsequent years. The risk of another cancer is generally higher, but it’s the exact form of cancer that determines how much risk there is, and consequently, how aggressive follow-up must be. In the case of bladder cancer, I have read some studies that the risk is quite small after five years. However, the American Urologic Association has clear guidelines: Because of the increased risk for recurrence, it recommends annual cystoscopy indefinitely. Cystoscopy is a pretty safe procedure, so I think your urologist’s recommendation is reasonable. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might need to get more facts to help you work out those problems with your new project. As always, a friendly approach shows the charming Arian at his or her persuasive best. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Information is what energizes ambition, and this is a good time for the ambitious Bovine to expand his or her range of knowledge and to be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a good time to consider making some long-overdue decorating changes at home or in your workplace. A splash of color can help raise spirits, even on the grayest day. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Learn more. Earn more. That’s the formula for Moon Children looking to expand their career horizons. Investigate the best places to get those training courses you’ll need. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your creative side helps gain attention for many of your ideas. But don’t neglect the practical aspects involved in implementing their move from paper to production. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A health problem should not be ignored. The sooner you check it out, the sooner you can deal with it and then move on. Some job advice comes from an unlikely source. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A relationship takes an unexpected shift that could leave you puzzled and hurt. Asking for an explanation could help uncover the reason for this sudden turn of events. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your busy schedule has drawn down much of your energy levels. Restore them by spending a wellearned time out enjoying the arts -perhaps with that special someone. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Make that presentation with confidence. Remember: When you show you believe in yourself, it helps persuade others that you truly know what you’re doing. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you usually prefer doing things on your own, a group effort might be advisable at this time. Try to keep an open mind about suggestions from colleagues. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) This could be a good time to reassess some of your recent decisions and see if any adjustments should be made based on facts that you might have just uncovered. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An emotionally charged situation creates uncertainty about the future of your relationship. Best advice: Talk things out while there’s still time to reach a new understanding. BORN THIS WEEK: You tend to act on matters of principle despite what others might advise. Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love — that makes life and nature harmonize. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a pefect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns. ~George Eliot, letter to Miss Lewis, 1st October 1841

Addicted seniors a serious problem: Opioid use among the older population The public is quickly learning that drug abuse goes beyond the illegal substances that are purchased on the street. Abuse of drugs extends to the prescription medications sitting in many medicine cabinets. While teenagers and young adults may be the first to be stereotyped as prescription drug abusers, seniors may have unwittingly become mixed up in one of the most misused prescription classes: opioid pain relievers. The problem of opioid abuse has been a growing issue for years. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from substance abuse of opioid pain relievers. Older patients are increasingly and repeatedly prescribed opioids to address chronic pain from arthritis, cancer and other problems that become more apparent as people age. Data from U.S. Medicare recipients found that, in 2011, roughly 15 percent of seniors were prescribed an opioid after being discharged from the hospital. When followed up on three months later, 42 percent were still taking the medication. Fast forward to 2015, and almost one-third of all Medicare patients were prescribed opioid painkillers by their physicians, says AARP. The Canadian Institute for Health Information says adults between the ages of 45 and 64 and seniors age 65 and older had the highest rates of hospitalizations due to opioid poisoning over the past 10 years. AARP also indicates nearly three million Americans age 50 or older have started to take painkillers for reasons beyond what their doctors prescribed. Experts from the Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing warn that dependence on opioids can set in after just a few days. Discomfort and side effects can occur when the pills are stopped. Opioids can decrease pain at first, but many people find they can be less effective over time. As a result, patients need to take greater amounts. Although many people can take opioids in small doses for short periods of time without problems, many find

themselves overcome by a troubling addiction. Some doctors prefer not to use opioids as a first line of treatment for chronic pain. Another possible risk of opioids among seniors is that the medication can cause disorientation that may lead to falls and fractures. The senior care resource A Place for Mom also says that prescription narcotics may increase risk of respiratory arrest. What’s more, an older body may not absorb and filter medicines as effectively as younger bodies can. This means that older adults might become addicted to or have side effects from a prescription drug at a lower dose. Seniors concerned about opioids can discuss other options with their doctors, such as nonopioid medications and alternative therapies for pain management, like massage or acupuncture. If opioids are prescribed, ask for the lowest dose and don’t exceed the time frame for taking the medicine. Only take the pills when absolutely necessary, and never mix opioids with alcohol or other substances.

They said the Vet Clinic has to pay fees and they are pushing it off on the clients whether there was waste or not, to cover their costs. With the fees they charge us now, I think this is so unjust. We are trying to make ends meet as it is and keep our pets healthy and happy. So not right! To our neighbors who live across the street from us who feel the need to give my younger sister the middle finger whenever you see her outside, what kind of message are you sending to your young children who are with you when you do it? So the next time you see her and she waves at you, be a decent person and wave back; you will make her happy and you just might make yourself happy as well; besides, if you don’t want to be civil to your neighbors, maybe you shouldn’t have moved into the village. Congratulations to the group(s) who've succeeded in ruining the [local] Boardwalk for everyone. Seems it became 'Party Central' for a select few and they chose to throw their empty beer bottles, cans, liquor and soda bottles directly into the watershed rather than disposing of them responsibly. When the trash accumulation was not enough of a thrill, they elected to kick out the safety slats on the walkway railing,
I just want to say that the wall in Geneseo looks really great! There is still more to do but what has been done so far, it really looks nice. I know it is hard work and look forward to seeing more of it being completed as time goes on. Eagle Scout Project Support I would like to thank everyone who has supported me through
my recent project that benefited the Habitat for Humanity. This includes the individuals who donated to my project, the Avon Rotary also providing funding, and Avon Lumber and Avon Hardware for providing materials for my project.
thus, forcing Village officials to place a steel barricade with a 'NO TRESPASSING' sign across the entry way to the platform. Ironic isn't it? The vandals no longer have access either. Don't know what it will cost to repair, or if it ever will be repaired but, I DO know, that it was a mindless act. I hope this will not be their greatest life accomplishment. The road crews posted construction signs on [local road] from [local town] to [local town] months ago but no work has been started. The road is in despicable condition!! Are they just teasing us with the signs, or are they actually going to repair the road? It's in such bad shape that it is useless getting an alignment done, and it is ruining my tires. Come on [local county], get to work and replace this disgraceful highway!!

Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. OVERCOME WITH GRIEF “The truly great person is the one who makes every person feel great…” ~ G.K. Chesterton Chesterton has given us the key to success and popularity. It is so simple…perhaps too simple…yet few people ever apply it to daily situations. Every human wants recognition. Even criminals may be motivated by a desire to be noted, we are told. We all want to be recognized and respected. So, we tend to try to impress others by telling what we have done, what we think. Obviously, we could make others feel great by taking a sincere interest in what THEY say, in what THEY think. In that way, we achieve a measure of greatness for ourselves. We provide an essential service to the families of this community, and we are proud of our find reputation among those we have served.

While it is quite normal to experience feelings of numbness and emptiness following the death of a loved one, many survivors have difficulty facing these emotions. Grieving is a necessary and normal response because it is a coping mechanism that helps us to confront and, finally, accept our losses. However, if the symptoms of bereavement become excessive, it may be a sign to seek support. We all engage in the grieving process at our own individual pace. In time, we come to accept our losses and move to resume our former activities; however, if grieving individuals find that they are having an inordinately difficult time dealing with their losses, they can choose not to face them alone. A funeral service, whether traditional or more modern, has two functions: to bring grieving family members and friends together in support of one another during a difficult time as well as to acknowledge the death and lifetime achievements of an individual. If you are interested in making funeral arrangements for a loved one, we invite you to call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
