H ow tostore fresh a p p l es Apples are a popular fruit that are grown in different places around the world. Come autumn, apples can be seen filling farm stands all over North America. Apples are available year-round, but many apple lovers insist there’s nothing better than plucking an apple directly off the tree in the fall. Apple orchards and pick-your-own farms are visited each autumn by apple lovers anxious for apples’ tart and juicy taste. Many people pick more apples than they can eat in a few days, so it pays to learn how to store apples properly so none of them go to waste. Start by picking a variety of apple that won’t go bad too quickly. Apple growers can make suggestions, but Jonathan, Rome, Fuji, and Granny Smith varieties tend to last longer than other varieties. Choose apples that are free of blemishes or soft spots. The adage that “one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch” bears some truth. Apples give off ethylene gas as they decay, and a rotting apple can quickly affect nearby apples. A good place to store apples in the short-term is in the refrigerator where it is cool. Put the apples in the crisper drawer. Do not store them with vegetables, as the apples may cause the veggies to ripen or rot prematurely. If you plan on long-term storage, a few extra steps are necessary. Apples need to be individually wrapped so they will not come in contact with other apples. Newsprint works great; just be sure to pick the pages that are done in black ink because colored ink may contain heavy metals.

HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADS Leave ample room between vehicles. Because braking quickly on wet roadways can increase the risk of accident, it’s important that drivers leave ample room between their vehicles and the vehicles in front of them. Afford other drivers the space to brake slowly just like you hope the drivers behind you are doing. Avoid overcrowded roadways during especially wet weather.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: There is a question that has intrigued me for years: What is the purpose of underarm and pubic hair? I guess, for that matter, what is the purpose of any body hair and hair on your head? -- B.H. ANSWER: Hair provides protection from the sun and helps regulate body temperature. Many evolutionary biologists believe our distant ancestors began losing most body hair when we began walking upright. Axillary (underarm) and pubic hair are thought to be conserved because they reduce friction, wick moisture away from the skin, provide a small degree of protection and as part of sexual selection, possibly due to pheromones, hormones that act outside the body to attract others.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused. While it may be true that the majority of men having prostate cancer may never be bothered by it, what about the minority whose lives will be threatened by it? If they aren’t screened and treated, many will die. -- G.F. ANSWER: I had a professor in medical school, Dr. Larry Wood, who used to say, “If I have confused you, you’re probably paying attention.” You have identified a major issue with prostate cancer screening (and screening in general): If screening harms some but saves the lives of a few, is it worth doing? That answer may be different if you are coming from a public policy perspective versus an individual perspective. Although we don’t know the exact numbers, it is estimated that about 47 men need to be treated for prostate cancer in order to save one life. Put another way, 46 out of 47 men are treated for prostate cancer, with its attendant risk of side effects, such as loss of sexual function and incontinence, without reducing their likelihood of dying of prostate cancer. We can’t predict with certainty whose prostate cancer is destined to kill them and whose is destined to be more indolent and slow-growing. The Gleason score, a measure of pathologic appearance of the cancer, helps, but is not completely accurate. Ninety percent of men with screening-detected prostate cancer elect to get it treated. Based on the many letters I get, all of them feel like they were the lucky ones to have had their lethal cancer removed -- even if, statistically, most of them were not destined to die from prostate cancer. Because it is likely that the harms of screening outweigh the benefits, the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force has recommended against prostate cancer screening in general. However, there are certainly cases in which I feel prostate cancer screening (remember that “screening” means that there are no symptoms or signs of cancer) is appropriate, which is why it’s important to have an individualized discussion of the risks and benefits of screening. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement and cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Dr., Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.
HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

Crafts, jew elry and décor: Include a trip to a craft fair, w here local vendors come together to display and sell their w ares, on your w eekend schedule. Handcrafted items make thoughtful and unique gifts, w hich can be tucked aw ay for giving later in the year.
Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.
Booths at these types of events tend to be diverse. Spend the day strolling tow n squares or closed-off city centers, and you may find some handfashioned jew elry or home-crafted artisanal soaps. Those eager to enhance their homes’ décor may find unique items like painted signs, knit afghans and much more.

With controversy still swirling around topics related to race, the debate regarding the removal and/ or destruction of public statues continues. How do you feel about the removal/destruction of these statues? • Once a statue is placed, it should never be removed. • Statues should be removed to museums but not destroyed. • Recent statues can be removed; old statues cannot. • Any statue that no longer reflects a country’s values should be destroyed. Thank you to Danielle, Grace and Activity staff at Morgan Estates for celebrating National Assisted Living Week with style. They organized many activities, music performances and outings to celebrate the residents! What a wonderful way to honor the residents and all they contribute to their living situation. Lots of laughs and smiles. Morgan Estates is very fortunate to have such a great, caring staff. I recently purchased my first vehicle from Randall Farnsworth Chevrolet and I can say it was the most relaxed, hassle free car dealership experience I've ever had. The professionals
at Randall Farnsworth Auto Group deliver quality, respectful, and knowledgeable service to ensure the customer is getting into a vehicle they want. Special thanks Charlie Webb Thanking our Rescuers who were at Boughton Park just when they were needed. DEC Officer Ken Levanway helped revive my older Lab "Toby" when his larynx restricted and breathing stopped. Also many thanks for the assistance of our new Park Ranger Matthew McDonald and Ann, the nurse who was also walking her dog and stopped to give comfort.

Did you leave it in plain sight for temptation to get the better of someone? Always remember, out of sight is out of mind. Theft can happen anywhere. Just use common sense.
I am sorry your little girl’s things were stolen at a church parking lot but the greatest thing you could teach your little girl is forgiveness and mercy. No, stealing is not right, never was or is, but to call someone rotten, etc. I think if you are a church goer because you were in a church parking lot, I would hope you listen to what is taught by your pastor. To the tattoo shop in [local town], shame on you for putting a tattoo on a minor. Did you know it is illegal to tattoo anyone under the age of 18 even with parental consent? Did you know you could have your license suspended for tattooing a minor? Shame on the minor's parents for taking the child to get the tattoo. You are teaching your child that the law doesn't have to be followed. I have reported your shop to the local authorities and
Special mention to the staff at Mendon Village Animal Hospital for being ready, willing and able to assist the moment we arrived. I was on route to the hospital to visit my niece & new great niece, & stopped at Dunkin Donuts to bring her something. As I pulled in the busy place, about 5 cars ahead of me, I see 2 cars pull in, too. I thought, oh we must take turns going thru, no big deal. One car snuck in and the other, a Jeep, sat there awaiting his turn. The 5 ahead of me must have been in a big hurry, for none let him in. My turn came, so I waved him in to go. I placed my order, drove up to the window and the very friendly
they will be looking into this. On 8/15 I went to [local store] in [local town] to get the double pack of steaks on sale. I in the past have gotten them and understand they are very popular and go quickly! The store opens at 9 am and as I walk into the store at 9:01 am to get my steaks... a man with his cart took ALL of them right in front of me and saw me; he knew what I was there for. I was furious as he took all of them away. However, the cashier was nice enough to get me some that they had in the back. I just want to say that I was furious as to how greedy some of you shoppers are! I know you like them, for the same reason I was there, but I would have left plenty for other customers that wanted them. By the way, I got 2 of the packages! An Un-Greedy Steak Shopper
clerk said, it’s all paid for. I was like, excuse me, no I didn't pay yet. She explained that the gentleman in the car ahead paid for my order. I just about burst into tears. I am so thankful for him and for what he did. I used the extra $ saved for the parking fee. THANK YOU!
I was late for an appt, wrong address and got behind you in a 2 lane road traveling under the speed limit. I couldn't get around you and you decided to slow down to punish me and gave me the finger. You could have moved over for me or at least gone the speed limit. Thanks for being so courteous - not. Why travel in the left lane if you don't need to (you eventually turned right)? Dear Suzie Sunflower: You pulled in our driveway when we weren't home last week, parked your car, and cut some of our sunflowers for yourself. Taking them without permission is THEFT. Our neighbor did see you! Please don't do it again. Realize too that if you had knocked on the door when we were home, we would have cut you a bouquet. We do this all the time. Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

Charles Dickens had a keen insight into human nature and here he tells us what every mother learns from her own children. Youngsters may not enjoy being told “No” or disciplined, but they’ll accept such treatment as long as they feel it is fair. If they’re actually guilty and “the punishment fits the crime,” they’ll go along with their parents’ decisions. When treatment of children shows bias or prejudice or when punishment is not even-handed, children quickly recognize and deeply resent such injustice. When a death occurs, make your first phone call to us. We can explain what must be done and relieve you of many of the details.

THERE IS NO PLACE FOR GUILT In psychological terms, “guilt” is an unhappy feeling that individuals may have when they feel that they have not done the right thing. This kind of emotion is particularly harmful when it is misplaced. With this in mind, one primary benefit of preplanning a funeral for one’s self is that it spares others from making important and expensive decisions based on the notion that “it’s what he or she would have wanted,” especially if it means that a guilt-ridden survivor of the deceased must go into debt and endure financial hardship. Instead of leaving it to others to guess what you would have wanted, it is far better to get what you know you really want by preplanning your own funeral. Thousands of people choose to plan their funeral and burial expenses and, in doing so, they receive great emotional relief for themselves and their loved ones. Prepaying your funeral will allow you to make your own funeral plans, but, more importantly, will spare surviving relatives and loved ones from the emotional burden of having to make decisions at a time of great stress and grief. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY, facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. QUOTE: “Guilt is a feeling that you owe a debt that you are not paying.” ~Stefan Molyneux

Understanding food labels is a great first step toward eating healthy.
How common is carpal tunnel? Increased hours spent on computer keyboards and digital devices can put people at risk for a relatively common and oftentimes painful condition that affects mobility in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS, can cause numbness, pain and tingling in the hand or arm as a result of one of the major nerves of the hand — the median nerve — being compressed in the wrist. The American College of Rheumatology says that CTS may be the most common nerve disorder experienced today, affecting between four and 10 million people in the United States alone. Middle-aged to older individuals are more likely to develop CTS than younger persons, and females are diagnosed three times more frequently than males. What is the carpal tunnel? The carpal tunnel is a passage that forms in the wrist on the palm side of the hand. It is located just beneath the skin surface. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says the carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones. Eight small wrist bones form three sides of the tunnel. The width of the tunnel is only about an inch. Injury or inflammation to the tissues inside of the carpal tunnel can shrink the space of the tunnel, eventually pressing on the tendons and the median nerve that runs through this narrow area. The role of the median nerve: When compression occurs in this area of the wrist, a key nerve is affected. The median nerve originates in the neck and runs through the arm. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist and goes into the hand, providing feeling to the palm side of the thumb and to the index, middle and part of the ring fingers (although not the little finger). It also controls some small muscles at the base of the thumb.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel: Weakness of the hand as well as tingling and numbness are the two most common symptoms of CTS. The numbness particularly affects four of the fingers. It can occur when holding a phone, book, newspaper or steering wheel or engaging in just about any activity that involves the hands. CTS also may wake a person up from sleep. There are a number of other compression issues that can occur in the hand and arms, causing similar pain and tingling in other areas. Ulnar nerve compression in the elbow can cause part of the ring finger and pinky finger to tingle and may be indicative of a different ailment. That’s why a professional diagnosis must be sought when experiencing symptoms related to CTS. When to see a doctor: If pain and tingling are affecting activities and sleeping patterns, individuals should see their doctors. Various nonsurgical remedies and therapies may help. If left untreated, any condition that affects nerve function may lead to permanent nerve and muscle damage.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

2008 - 2009 Avon Boys Basketball Team, New York State Class C Champions - photo by Micheal Johnson On September 28th, Avon Central School’s Athletic Hall of Fame will induct its twelfth class, the 2008 - 2009 Boys Basketball Class State Championship Team. The induction ceremony will take place during the halftime of the varsity football game vs. Cal-Mum/ByronBergen. The team will be the first team inducted to the hall. It is an honor being the first team enshrined into the Avon Hall of Fame, and that is what characterized the 2008-2009 State Championship Basketball Team best: the word team! It was the first, and is still the only, Livingston County boys’ basketball team to win a state title. The most significant victory for the program may have been the result of a loss the year before. After completing an undefeated regular season, the Braves lost a heartbreaker in the sectional semifinals. With most of the squad returning, that loss became the catalyst for the 2008-09 season and brought the team together as a unit. That loss became the focus of the entire offseason and the incentive for the following year. It helped propel the team to a 19-1 finish in the regular season and resulted in a sectional title over Bloomfield 51-37 at the Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester. The team was ranked #1 in Class C the
entire year, and one of the great moments of the season was when Avon hosted the #1 ranked and eventual state champion in Class B, Bishop Kearney. The gym was sold out, and even though it became Avon’s only defeat of the year, it was a magical experience and a moment that helped the team imagine what was possible for them. That possibility was a trip to Glens Falls and a New York State title over Maple Hill 61-55. The motto of the team was, ‘14 players- 32 minutes’ as every member played a decisive role in the team’s success. No player averaged over 12 points a game, a testament to the depth of the group, and each night ushered in a new hero for the Braves. That “team first” attitude galvanized fans all over the county and became what truly characterized our Braves. Community support was made evident when the team arrived home from Glens Falls at three in the morning to fire trucks and a reception on the town circle, followed by the traditional pizza at Dontonios. Where else would that occur except in Avon? The 2008-09 Avon Braves Basketball team was blessed with talent--truly great players, but it was the ability of every player to sacrifice for each other that made them legendary.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Apply a winterizing fertilizer. Winterizing fertilizers can help lawns store food they need to survive through winter and also can help them bounce back strong in spring. Such fertilizers are typically formulated for coolseason grasses such as fescue and bluegrass and are often best applied after the final cut of fall. Warm-season grasses go dormant in winter, so homeowners whose lawns contain these types of grasses won’t want to apply a winterizing fertilizer. Homeowners who don’t know which type of grass they have or are concerned about when to apply a winterizing fertilizer should consult with a lawncare professional before fertilizing.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries charm helps persuade others to listen to your proposal. But it’s still a long way from acceptance, unless you can stand up to the tough questions that are set to follow. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Plan to share a weekend getaway from all the pressures of your hectic workaday world with a very special someone. You could be pleasantly surprised at what develops. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your keen insight once again helps you handle a challenging situation with a clearer perception of what it’s really all about. What you learn helps you make a difficult decision. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) If you want to steer clear of getting involved in a new family dispute, say so. Your stand might cause hurt feelings for some, but overall, you’ll be respected for your honesty. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Expect recognition for your efforts in getting a project into operation. Besides the more practical rewards, your Lion’s heart will be warmed by the admiration of your colleagues. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Set aside time to rid yourself of clutter that might well be drawing down your creative energies. Consider asking someone to help you decide what stays and what goes. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A colleague could make a request that might place you in an awkward position with co-workers. Best advice: Share your concerns with an associate you can trust. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your energy levels are way up, allowing you to take on the added challenge of a task you’ve been hoping to secure. Expect this move to lead to an important opportunity. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your continuing sense of confidence in what you’ve set out to do gives encouragement to others. Expect to see more people asking to add their efforts to yours. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might think it would be best to reject a suggestion that others insist would be unworkable. But you might be surprised by what you find if you give it a chance. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Changing a decision might disappoint some people, but the important thing is that you be honest with yourself. Don’t go ahead with anything you have doubts about. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There could be some fallout from an emotional confrontation that you really should deal with before moving on. Best to start fresh with a clean, clear slate. BORN THIS WEEK: Your honesty not only helps you make decisions for yourself, but also helps others find the right choices for themselves. OTHER Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

624-4895 ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.
