TIPS FOR
Farmers Market - SHOPPING For the best selection, go to the farmers market early. The best goods go first. Popular-but-limited items may even sell out before the day is done. It’s as simple as that. Planning ahead is essential. However, you need to leave a bit of wiggle room for those strawberries you didn’t know would be at market so early, or the zucchini blossoms you’ve never tried before. Trying new things is part of the fun of going to farmers markets. Get to know the merchants. There are a lot of great stories there, if you just take the time to listen. Smile and say hello. You can also ask them questions about where their produce is grown and if it’s certified organic.

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

HOME IMPROVEMENT ITEMS TO AVOID WHEN COMPOSTING • Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.
KITCHENS
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A longtime situation starts to move into a new phase. The question for the uncertain Lamb right now is whether to move with it. Facts emerge by midmonth to help you decide. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A talent for organizing your priorities allows the Divine Bovine to enjoy a busy social life and not miss a beat in meeting all workplace and/or family commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) What began as a dubious undertaking has now become one of your favorite projects. Your enthusiasm for it rallies support from other doubters-turnedbelievers. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Accept the help of friends to get you through an unexpectedly difficult situation. There’ll be time enough later to investigate how all this could have happened so fast. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Change is a major factor for the Big Cat through midmonth. Be prepared to deal with it on a number of levels, including travel plans and workplace situations. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not like all the changes that have begun to take place around you. But try to find something positive in at least some of them that you can put to good use. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s unsettling experience could create more problems if it’s not handled with care and love. And who’s the best one to offer all that? You, of course. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It might not be the right time for you to start a new venture. But it’s a good time to start gathering facts and figures so you’ll be set when the GO! sign lights up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sagacious Sagittarius should have no trouble deciding between those who can and those who cannot be trusted to carry out a workplace commitment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Surprise, surprise. It looks as if that one person you once thought you could never hope to win over to your side suddenly just might choose to join you. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might have to set aside your pride for now and accept a change that isn’t to your advantage. Cheer up. There’ll be time later to turn this around in your favor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your creative self emerges as dominant through midmonth. This should help you restart that writing or arts project you’ve left on the shelf for far too long. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of encouraging others by example to come out from the shadows and enjoy life to the fullest. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Passw ord protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone ow ners passw ord-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the w rong hands, you could make it very eas y for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity. Review your social netw ork privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social netw ork sites. As the use of social netw orking continues to i ncrease, it’s expected that the use of malw are w ill rise, too. Cybercriminals are alw ays looking for w ays to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of w hat apps you insta ll, and never “ friend” someone you don’t know. Consider getting extra protection. There are a grow ing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as w ell as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, M obile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity M oni toring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

DID YOU KNOW? Aerial yoga is a relatively new form of the Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline of yoga. Inspired by aerial gymnastics, calisthenics, pilates, and, of course, yoga, aerial yoga is sometimes referred to as “antigravity yoga.” This unique form of yoga involves the use of hammocks suspended from the ceiling that support practitioners’ bodies, allowing them to work against gravity. Popular aerial yoga poses include aerial lunges, the half boat pose, the reclining angle pose, and the one-legged king pigeon pose. Though aerial yoga is a recent phenomenon, those interested in pursuing this unique form of exercise can seek more information at local yoga studios. Unlike traditional yoga that many people can practice at home without supervision, aerial yoga participants should only perform the poses under the supervision of professionals.

Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PAD may lead to tissue death. Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness. When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products.

585-447-9108 Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Know the ABCDE’s of Melanoma --DEAR DR. ROACH: In 1976, I had a mole on my right calf about the size of a pencil eraser. A biopsy showed it to be melanoma, and they thought they had removed all of the cancer, but they did another surgery to be sure that I was cancer-free. I am a natural redhead and never sunbathed or used a tanning bed. It has been 38 years, and I am still cancer-free. I get a skin check from my dermatologist every six months. At the time of my diagnosis, my family doctor said that if the melanoma spreads inside the body, “the ball game is over.” Is that still true? I know melanoma can be deadly. -- W.K. ANSWER: Melanoma is the most commonly lethal skin cancer. Although there have been some exciting new developments in treating advanced melanoma, the survival rate for stage IV melanoma, where the cancer has spread to internal organs, is only 15 percent to 20 percent at five years. Fortunately, the survival rate for melanoma caught early, at stage I, is greater than 90 percent, which is why it’s so important to know the ABCDE’s of melanoma recognition: A: Asymmetry - one half looks different from the other half; B: Border - the border in a melanoma is often irregular, not a near-circle; C: Color - melanomas usually are not a uniform color, like most benign lesions. Some areas are light brown, others brown-black, others red or pale; D: Diameter - greater than 6 millimeters, the eraser on a standard pencil; E: Enlargement or Evolution - any change in color, shape, size or symptoms (including bleeding). Any of these should prompt a visit to your regular doctor or a dermatologist. As an internist, these are the features I look for, and I have a very low threshold for sending suspicious lesions to my colleagues in dermatology. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? -- V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. Surgery to relieve the nerve compression is successful in some cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. What is a seborrheic keratosis? Thanks to education and awareness about skin cancer, more people are taking heed of skin growths and changes and visiting their dermatologists. A spot or mole on the body can be a cause for concern. A seborrheic keratosis is one such type of skin growth that is actually benign but may cause concern due to its appearance. Seborrheic keratoses, or SKs, are one of the most common noncancerous skin growths, says The Mayo Clinic. Although anyone can get them, they are more common in middle-aged to older adults. Also known as basal cell papilloma, senile warts or barnacles, these growths form as a common sign of skin aging, according to DermNet New Zealand. The American Academy of Dermatology says a seborrheic keratosis may seem worrisome because it can look like a wart, a pre-cancerous skin growth or even skin cancer. However, despite their appearance, SKs are harmless. How do SKs form? Seborrheic means “greasy” and keratosis means “thickening of the skin.” Despite the name, SKs are not known to be caused by an abundance of sebum in the skin, nor are they limited to areas of increased oil production. The exact cause of SKs isn’t known, but some doctors feel that an overproduction of skin cells can cause a thickening of the skin in certain areas. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology offers that SKs are most likely hereditary, and they often are found on the trunk of the body and where the face meets the scalp. Sometimes seborrheic keratoses may erupt during pregnancy, following hormone replacement therapy or as a result of other medical problems.
Appearance of SKs Some of these growths have a warty, rough surface, while others look like dabs of warm, brown candle wax on the skin. ADA says they can range in color from white to black, but most are tan or brown. The appearance of SKs may change as one ages, and it is even possible for them to fall off naturally over time. The Mayo Clinic says that, unless changes include becoming sore or bleeding without healing, there’s little need to act. SKs may form singularly, but often they appear in groups. Cancer risk? SKs have no relationship to skin cancer and do not pose a risk to one’s health. Unlike moles, they will not turn into melanoma. The superficial nature of SKs mean they can become irritated by clothing and grow. Treatment Unless a seborrheic keratosis is in an area that causes constant irritation, there is really no need to seek treatment. However, dermatologists can remove them quite easily if they are unsightly or uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic, cryosurgery or laser therapy is possible. Generally little scarring is produced, offers AOCD. Although SKs are harmless, their appearance may be similar to skin conditions that are not. Those who are unsure about changes to the skin should always seek the help of a licensed dermatologist.

It’s a shame....that the "I Gotta Vent" section is twice the size of "Brighter Side." I am a woman. On Saturday morning, I went to an estate sale a few houses over from mine. Of course nothing was priced. (I find this irritating...apparently people want to sell but are too lazy to come up with a price). I asked the gentleman who was running the sale for a price on items downstairs. He rudely passed over me to assist a woman in a short dress with plenty of cleavage showing (remember, this is an estate sale, not a bar). When he could finally make time for me, I asked him for prices on an assortment of screws, nails, etc. He replied, "That's a boy thing." Really? In 2018? Women cannot buy hardware? Needless to say, I left immediately. I simply cannot fathom this man's behavior... it was rude, crude and disrespectful. This man needs to step out of his cave.

C. Dennis Smith July 23, 2018 Clayton/Lakeville: Charles Dennis Smith passed peacefully on July 23, 2018 at age 74, surrounded in love by his family. Predeceased by his parents C. Oliver and Vivian (Green) Smith. Survived by his loving wife of 50 years Judith (Miller) Smith and son Brian (and wife Jennifer) Smith of Colorado; his two grandchildren, Colden and Nia Smith; sisters, Jan (and husband Tom) Wolski of Cambridge, NY and Heather (and husband Steve) Bailey of Vermont, and many nieces and nephews. Dennis retired after a long career at Kraft Foods. He enjoyed the next chapter watching sunsets and ships with Judy from their home in Clayton, boating and fishing the St. Lawrence and baiting hooks for his grandchildren. When not puttering, Dennis could be found in the woods, immersed in the nature and wild he was deeply connected to. September was a time to make an annual trip to Colorado to hunt elk with his son, nephew Greg, and brother in-law Jim Johnston. This time in the Rocky Mountains was special beyond measure for father and son. A defining part of his life, hunting created lifelong friendships, and Dennis shared abundance from his success with family and friends. Snow skiing was also a big part of his life. He and Judy were familiar faces at Swain for more than three decades and adored skiing Arapahoe Basin and Keystone in Colorado with their grandchildren who were his pride and joy. Denny’s practicality and practical jokes will be missed as much as his presence at family gatherings and in the day to day, for he was always someone to lend a strong hand, and his barbecued chicken was a mainstay at summer gatherings. As a grandfather, he introduced the funny pages and dominoes, made mischief and imparted patience and simple joy through fishing, playing cards, and observing the wonders of nature together. He will be missed. Family and friends may call on Friday, August 3rd, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY where services will be held on Saturday, August 4th, at 11am. Memorial contributions may be made in Dennis’ memory to Livonia Ambulance, PO Box 8, Livonia, NY 14487. Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
THINKING OF OTHERS While the deceased may be the focus of any funeral, the primary purpose of this important ceremony is to help the assembled survivors better come to grips with their bereavement. In essence, a funeral brings the living face to face with the reality of death and helps them accept its finality. At the same time, a funeral provides a climate of mourning that enables grief-stricken individuals to gather with others and express their sorrows in an accepting and supportive environment. With all this in mind, families who might not see the value of a service or who desire a private service might want to consider the needs of others to express their own grief and sense of loss. When properly planned, a funeral can provide lasting satisfaction and comfort to the survivors. Experts tend to agree that those who refuse to attend funerals of loved ones for one reason or another have a harder time with the grief process than those who attend. Just the simple act of sharing that grief decreases the intensity of it. To learn more about our funeral services, please don’t hesitate to call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 3465401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “The song is ended, but the memory lingers on.” ~ Irving Berlin

“I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who does not like reading…” ~ Macaulay
The person who loves to read is never alone…he has his choice of good friends, all available in the pages of books. Reading gives unlimited access to every point on earth, or even into far corners of the universe. The man who has plenty of books is wealthy…wealthy in terms of travel, of adventure, of knowledge that he can put to use in countless ways. He is much better off than others, even a mighty king, who have never learned of the satisfaction to be found between the covers of a book. We take great pains to arrange all floral tributes so as to obtain the full beauty and the most pleasing overall effect. No detail is overlooked.

Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
