5th Grade Runner Earns All-American Status at Nationals By Karin Fetzner St. Agnes School 5th grade student Catherine Staley competed in the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships 3K race on December 9th in Tallahassee, Florida placing 12th out of a field of 323 runners in the age 9-10 bracket which puts her in the top 4% of runners in the country in her age group. Catherine improved her ranking in the nation this year by 12 places improving on her 24th place finish last year. The race was conducted under cold and damp conditions with temps only in the 40s and the rainfall from the previous day left the field soggy and muddy but Catherine put in a time of 11:25 earning the status of an All-American Runner. “My goal going into the race was to be in the top 25,” reflected Staley after the race. “I was so happy when I was done and made it. I didn’t know I could go that fast!” Earlier this season, Catherine won the women’s division of the Geneseo Trio. Her overall trio time of 1:00:01 was recognized as a new Women’s Trio record. Catherine was the top female finisher in the Oak Tree 5k with a time of 20 minutes - good for 10th overall. In the Friday Knight 5k, her time was 20 minutes, 9 seconds and she
finished the Ramon Rocha 5k in 19 minutes, 51 seconds, which placed her third overall in the race. This was the second consecutive “Fastest Female” Trio title for Catherine, who ran the races 81 seconds faster than last year. She also finished as the second overall “Fastest Female” in the 2015 Trio races. Catherine also won the St. Agnes School Race to Educate 5K this past September.
Congratulations, Catherine!

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy BAD BREATH AND BEYOND The smell of a person’s breath can be indicative of a number of health conditions. For instance, breath that smells like “acetone” (nail polish remover) may be a sign that a diabetic is not managing his or her blood sugar well. In such cases, the body does not receive enough insulin to break down glucose in the blood. When the body cannot get its energy from sugar, it switches to burning fat for fuel instead. The process of breaking down fat to use as energy releases by-products called “ketones,” including acetone. If ketone levels rise too high, the blood can become acidic and affect how other organs in the body function. Recognizing ketone breath may help avert a serious problem. As part of your healthcare team, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is
concerned about all aspects of your health. If a medical condition comes to our attention during a dental exam, you can be sure we will discuss the issues with you as well as any other healthcare provider if you choose. We bring you our dental column as a way to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia of the many benefits of professional dentistry. For gentle dental care for the family, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most dental insurances. P.S. Breath analysis may help identify “prediabetes” when diabetes is in its early stage.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Psyllium Allergy Rare But Possible --DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know if you have ever heard of a person being allergic to psyllium fiber? My doctor suggested I take Metamucil for constipation, as opposed to stool softeners. However, when I took it, my face and eyes began to itch, I began to wheeze and I coughed until I vomited it up. My doctor stated he had never heard of anyone being allergic to it. As a side note, my husband has used Metamucil for years, and I have had a couple of episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath that could be attributed to inhaling some of the powder when he mixed it. -P.G. ANSWER: I haven’t seen any cases either, but it can happen, rarely -- most often to people who have allergies to grasses or dust. It is possible that inhaling some of the powder started the allergy. I would be careful to stay away from the area where your husband is mixing his, as allergies sometimes worsen over time. Unfortunately, you will have to find another source for fiber. Good dietary sources include wheat bran, prunes and prune juice. If you need a supplement, you may try methylcellulose (such as Citrucel), wheat dextrin (like Benefiber), and calcium polycarbophil (Fibercon). Be sure to get enough fluid, and start with a low dose and then slowly increase. The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$5 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 86 years old and in generally good health. He has been falling for no apparent reason for the past three years. He has had MRIs and X-rays, been to neurologists and ENTs -no one has an explanation. He has walkers and an electric wheelchair, but there are times when he has to stand and/or walk a little. My parents’ apartment looks like a war zone. Almost all of the furniture has been broken, not to mention the cuts and bruises on my dad. Is there anything you can think of that might cause this? -- J.G. ANSWER: If multiple doctors haven’t helped with the benefit of a complete history, exam and labs, I’m not likely to. However, vitamin D supplements have been shown to improve strength and reduce falls in the large number of people who have low levels. There are two ways to find out. You either can have the vitamin D level checked by a doctor, and use vitamin D if it is low; or, you can try a daily dose of vitamin D for a month or so and see if it helps. Most authorities recommend 400-800 IU daily. Personally, I have found that 1,000-2,000 IU often is needed. This dose is unlikely to do harm if taken for only a month trial, and may be necessary for those whose levels are deficient and have symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. What a fantastic music department at Penfield High! The wind ensemble, choral and choir, strings and symphony are outstanding; overwhelmed and thrilled with the beauty and skill of the musicians. Thank you and congratulations to 14 to 18 year olds who are the 'good guys'! You looked super in lovely gowns and tuxes! Only wish more of the audience could compliment you by dressing up a bit, too. Well I was on my last tire and I was taking off the cap on the tire and I hear a snap and all the air comes rushing out of my tire. I just stood there and didn't know why or what to do. Thank God for the kind gentleman in the cashier’s booth at the gas station at BJ's who came running over to tell me I broke the sensor off and he would get me help from the auto dept. in BJ's. Within 5 minutes another kind gentlemen came over with tools to change my tire and put the spare one on. I asked him what I owed and he said "Merry Christmas." I didn't get the names of either men but I just wanted to say thank you so very much to both of you for your

On 9/13/17 I had picked my child up from an area high school and quickly turned around in the driveway across from the school to pick up another student who also needed a ride. I completely turned my car around so that I wouldn't have to back out of the driveway with so much school traffic and children walking. After picking up this second student I was flagged down by a car so I put my window down. The homeowner got into his car and chased me so that he could scream, point his finger and belligerently remind me that I am never to use his driveway again. Because you chased me down and scared me, I did report your

How hard is it for this garbage company to pick up a box and throw it away? I've constantly had to call them and they keep on sending someone to pick it up. Put Old Cellphones to Good Use (Family Features) When you get a new cellphone or wireless device, what happens to the old one? Instead of letting it clutter up drawer space, put it to good use by recycling it. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, recycling one million cellphones saves enough energy to power more than 185 U.S. households with electricity for a year. Here’s what else recycling wireless devices can do: • Recycling helps the environment by saving energy and keeping usable materials out of landfills. • Cellphones and other devices are made of precious metals, copper, and plastics - all of which require energy to mine and manufacture. Recycling conserves the precious metals that make up these devices, so that they can be turned into new products. • Metals recovered in the recycling process - such as gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, tin and zinc - are used by industries such as automotive, electronics, jewelry and plating. • The plastics recovered get recycled into plastic components for new electronic devices or other plastic products, including as garden furniture, license plate frames, non-food containers and replacement automotive parts. • Rechargeable batteries can be recycled into other rechargeable battery products.

Side effects of snoring include higher risk for Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and
slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called betaamyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.
Did You Know? Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. Though the disease is most often associated with women over 50, anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, which weakens bones and can make them more susceptible to breaks.

I-PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Emphasize time management. Hectic schedules can quickly derail resolutions. Many people want to eat healthier and exercise more but find their time is stretched pretty thin, which can make it difficult to get to the gym or prepare healthy meals at home. Finding ways to manage time more effectively can make it easier to stay committed to New Year’s resolutions. Right down your daily schedule and look for ways to free up time. If you routinely take an hour for lunch each day, use that time to exercise and eat at your desk when you return from your walk, workout or jog. Try to wake up 30 to 60 minutes earlier each morning to exercise, and make use of time before bed by preparing a healthy lunch for the following day.

“No one who is occupied in doing a very difficult thing, and doing it very well, ever loses his self-respect…” ~ George Bernard Shaw We may not always be able to command great respect from our peers, but if we can retain a good self-image and respect ourselves, we need little else. Self-respect can be built on conspicuous accomplishment but not too many of us are so gifted. Shaw tells us that if we concentrate on doing one difficult thing…our daily occupation, perhaps?…and doing it very well, we retain our self-respect. It’s something every one of us can do. Every adult who might some day be required to make funeral arrangements, should be well-informed. Our staff is available to answer any and all of your funeral-related questions, without obligation.

In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
