SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Share some cooking duties. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

HOST A DELICIOUS HOLIDAY BRUNCH Many people host friends and family during the holiday season. Holiday dinners may garner the bulk of hosts’ attention, but overnight guests need to eat breakfast and lunch as well. Brunch can save hosts some work and give families a great opportunity to break bread without some of the formalities that may accompany holiday dinners.

CHOCOLATE CARDAMOM TRUFFLE CAKE Serves 10 to 12 Amaretti Base 5 ounces amaretti 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 5 tablespoons sugar Cardamom Truffle Filling 2 1/3 cups heavy cream 4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them 25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed 4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur Cardamom Cocoa Sugar 3 green cardamom pods 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving. To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a very active, healthy 68-year-old until March, when I was hospitalized for two weeks for bilateral pneumonia. I was told by doctors at the hospital that it would take four to six weeks to get my health back. However, I experienced shortness of breath and bouts of coughing for months, and insisted on seeing a specialist three weeks ago. A CT scan and bronchoscopy showed symptoms typical of bird lung. We had a cockatiel for 17 years! I am now taking prednisone and ibuprofen, which are helping to clear up the inflammation. I hope to be able to return to work soon. My family doctor and several other doctors I know said that they’d studied this at med school but had never seen it in their practices. I hope this serves as a warning to other people who might be tempted to buy a pet bird or to breed them. I was lucky, but someone in poor health might not have survived the deadly combination of pneumonia and bird lung. ANSWER: “Bird lung” is a term that might refer to either of two possibilities. The first condition is “bird-fanciers lung” -- essentially an allergic reaction to bird droppings, feathers and the proteins of various birds. It can look very much like pneumonia, with abnormal chest X-ray findings that can be indistinguishable. The only cure is to get away from the source of the allergens, but prednisone might be necessary in severe cases. It is not an infection. The second possibility is an infection called psittacosis (sit-a-CO-sis), caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. Cockatiels are commonly infected by this organism, and the birds do not always appear ill. Psittacosis can be a very severe illness, potentially affecting multiple systems, but it usually responds rapidly to appropriate antibiotics, such as tetracyclines. Given your history, I suspect that bird-fancier’s lung, also called hypersensitivity pneumonitis, is more likely. It sounds like your specialist is treating you appropriately. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that microwaving food can cause the food to lose nutritional value or even to become carcinogenic. Is this true? -- S.G. ANSWER: Not really. Heating food does cause some nutrients, such as vitamin C, to break down. But microwaves don’t do that more than any other cooking method does. In general, the longer a food is kept very hot, the more nutrients are lost. So quick heating keeps in the most nutrients. Quickly steaming is another way. That’s essentially what a microwave does, since it heats water molecules very efficiently, steaming the water contained in food or that you use to rinse it. In fact, microwaving may be better than boiling, since many nutrients can be lost in the water if you just throw it out. As far as carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals) go, these are products of very high heat, especially grilling meat. Because microwaves can heat unevenly, some areas of the food can get very hot while others stay cold, which is why it’s best, when microwaving, to cook for a short while and allow the heat to distribute itself before heating further or serving. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE

NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES

Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.

Stay away from pollen. Stay away from pollen and prevent it from being tracked indoors. Remove shoes when walking through the door. Take off clothes worn outside and launder them promptly, showering to wash pollen off of the body. Use an air conditioner or keep windows closed when the pollen count is high.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A project benefits from your organizational skills that get it up and running. Your success leaves a highly favorable impression. Don’t be surprised if you get some positive feedback soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Spend time on practical matters through the end of the week. Then begin shifting your focus to more-artistic pursuits. Resist being overly self-critical. Just allow yourself to feel free to create. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Restarting those creative projects you had set aside for a while will help provide a much-needed soothing balance to your hectic life. Besides, it will be like meeting old friends again. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A change in plans could make it tough to keep a commitment. But stay with it. You’ll get an A-plus for making the effort to do what’s right and not taking the easy way out by running off. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s enthusiasm for a workplace policy review is admirable. But be sure you know who is really behind the resistance to change before pointing your finger at the wrong person. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You can expect to have to do a lot of work through midweek. Devote the rest of the week to checking your holiday plans in case some need to be adjusted to accommodate changes. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Try to avoid signing on the dotted line in the early part of the week. You need time to study issues that weren’t fully explored. Later in the week might be more favorable for decision-making. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new development could snarl travel schedules or other holiday-linked projects. Some flexibility might be called for to deal with the problems before they get too far out of hand. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Relatives seek your advice on a matter you’d rather not be involved in. If so, use that sage Sagittarian tact to decline the “offer,” so that no one’s feelings are needlessly hurt. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A shift in planning direction might help you speed up your progress toward achieving that longplanned goal. Trusted colleagues are ready to offer some valuable support. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) An unexpected demand for settlement of an old loan could create some pre-holiday anxiety. But you might not really owe it. Check your records thoroughly before remitting payment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to get into the social swim and enjoy some well-earned fun and games with those closest to you before you have to resume more serious activities next week. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to sense the needs of others makes you a wise counselor for those seeking help with their problems. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

On "Halloween Nite" the Town of Riga Recreation Department along with the Churchville Lions Club, hosted their annual Halloween Parade to provide the community's young "Trick or Treaters" a safe environment in which to

participate. The parade started at the Churchville Commons and was led up Main Street by the Churchville Fire Department's fire truck and the Churchville Fire Police provided safe passage to the Church Lodge in Churchville Park. Once there the youngsters were treated to a beautifully decorated building where apples, cider, donuts, and of course bags of candy were served. A costume contest was also held. All involved were thrilled that the ghoulish characters were able to participate in a safe and secure environment. HUGE “Thank

You’s” go out to the following people and organizations that continue to make this event memorable year after year…Lions Ruth Stewart, Lucy Hackett, the Riga Recreation Dept., Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville Fire Department, Churchville Fire Police, the Monroe County Parks Department, and parents of all the “Trick or Treaters”. David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thanks to our new postmaster at the Avon Post Office. He goes above and beyond to help all of us. Thank You, D.T.

The polarization of the US has set us up to be susceptible to manipulation. Instead of asking the more insightful questions and viewing the responses with an open mind we take a party (or tribal) stand and seek to PROVE our position. That opens us to deceptive practices: Changing the criteria, turning perpetrators into victims, deflecting attention, minimizing criminal behavior by generalizing it. Don’t be duped, it's a lie.

In this week’s edition 68% of those polled thought that monuments already erected should never be removed. There are over 700 Confederate monuments and an additional 800 Confederate symbols spanning 31 states and were erected during the Jim Crow era (1870s-1950s). Two of Stonewall Jackson’s great-greatgrandsons penned an open letter to the mayor of Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy as well as the grandsons’ hometown, regarding Jackson’s statue there. “[W]e are writing today to ask for the removal of his statue, as well as the removal of all Confederate statues from Monument Avenue,” they wrote in their letter published on Slate. “They are overt symbols of racism and white supremacy."

Sunday my ATM card and transaction got frozen on the screen. While I was messaging the bank on FB and talking to them, some of you were swearing at me and throwing me dirty looks. Well, being a Sunday no one was at the bank, so I had to secure my card before I left. You would have done the same thing. Really, some of you people didn't have to act the way you did. It was not my fault. I worked out a solution with the bank, didn't say a word to you angry people and went over and bought a lottery ticket and won $100. I was the winner, not you in more ways than one. Not my fault what happened, the angry looks and words were not appreciated.

To the DOT workers mowing the median and along the sides of I-390 from exit 9 down to exit 5 .... you are doing an incredible job! It is so nice to see the landscaping along the interstate nicely groomed. This is how it should look at all times. Job well done!! Local Commuter

Props to the people who are working on the building in Caledonia where 36 and 383 meet. I drive past it for work twice a day & have seen the progress. I love the design & it looks like it's been a lot of hard work so kudos to you!! Can't wait until it's open!

they do is complain about the noise that their neighbors make above them. If you don't like hearing them walking or TV playing or when they have family and friends over, then maybe you should move to an upstairs apartment or just move out. Don't make it miserable for your neighbors who have lived there several years before you moved in and never had a problem before you. I wanted a collision estimate not a blatant disregard of my personal space. The estimator entered my car without my permission and read my mail and the nutcracker correspondence inside. There was no reason to enter the car. Perhaps he was a nutcracker collector. Time to reconsider the Empire State and move to DC.

“A grateful thought toward heaven is of itself a prayer.....” ~ G.E. Lessing Nearly everyone agrees that we have much to be thankful for and that we owe much to a beneficent providence for our many blessings. Certainly we cannot credit our own meager abilities for all of the good fortune. We have to believe that we were somehow guided to the good things that we have.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

On Thanksgiving Day, families gather to give thanks to God. Such formal recognition of our dependence upon Divine Providence is good, but throughout the year, each grateful thought is a prayer of thanksgiving and every day is, as it should be, Thanksgiving Day. Our staff is thankful for the many wonderful friendships they have formed in this community through our years of service.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage.

The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. You’ve heard it before: “I saw this, and it just made me think of you!” Maybe you thought, Am I really the kind of person that makes people think of oversized fuchsia slippers? Don’t blame yourself. You’re yet another victim of one-size-fits-all gifting, but move over, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. There’s a new player this season: Plaid Friday. It all started in Oakland, California in 2009 when gallery owner, Kerri Johnson, grew tired of the seasonal shopping focus repeatedly being on the big box stores. Deciding it was time for local business owners to “weave together” and take back holiday shopping, Johnson created the local business event that is sweeping the nation: Plaid Friday. Now, on Plaid Friday, local businesses across the United States are offering specials to customers who shop while wearing plaid as a gesture of solidarity with both these local businesses and their communities. Not only are you practically guaranteed to choose more unique gifts, but shopping Plaid on Friday offers a host of other benefits, as well. Shopping local has a greater positive impact on your local economy. Local businesses pay local taxes. They hire local people. They also tend to source their goods locally. According to the Institute for Local Self-Reliance’s 2016 article, Amazon’s Stranglehold, “Compared to Amazon, independent retailers create 2x as many jobs for the same amount of revenue.”Similarly, according to the Andersonville Study of Retail Economics, local business generates 70 percent more local economic activity per square foot than big box retail. According to another statistic, money spent at a local business generates 2.5x more wealth for the local economy compared to money spent at a chain-owned business. Local money spent locally stays and grows local communities; it’s that simple. If every family in the United States spent an extra $10 a month at a locally owned, independent business instead of at a national chain, over $9.3 billion would be directly returned to our economy.

Shopping local puts you in touch with local expertise. According to the Codex Group in its article, “Why Online Book Discovery is Broken (and How to Fix It),” one learns that “at a local store, you are as much as 3x more likely to discover something new.” Independent, local retailers have a great deal more freedom to choose which products they sell, and they typically choose products with which they have experience and which they trust. Different products at each local retailer mean a greater diversity of products, and more options tends to increase the chances that consumers will be able to find a more exact fit for their needs and wants. Additionally, local businesses are often able to offer more individualized attention and assistance to their customers, making certain they find the best possible options to suit their needs. Shopping local is better for the environment. Shopping local helps reduce the amount of international shipping and transport involved in commerce. Therefore, it also reduces processing, packaging and transportation waste, leading to less pollution because of this shipping and transport. Local businesses tend to use more locally-produced products and local resources. These local, independent businesses are also much more likely to reuse materials, conserving both resources and energy. Shopping local builds community involvement. When you are out shopping in your community, you have greater chances of meeting and talking with your fellow community members. You are more likely to become involved in with your fellow community members and, therefore, in your community, as well. Meanwhile, your locally spent dollars can make the difference between success and failure for several local businesses while helping to maintain community life.

Your 4 simple ways to save more for retirement It’s never too early to begin saving for retirement. While millions of people have no doubt heard or read those very words before, surveys indicate that few people are taking that lesson to heart. A 2018 survey from Bankrate.com found that 20 percent of Americans don’t save any of their annual income. Things aren’t necessarily rosier in Canada, where the financial institution CIBC reports that 32 percent of people nearing or on the cusp of retiring have nothing saved for retirement. Saving for retirement can seem impossible in households where every dollar counts. But the following are four simple ways to save more for retirement without making dramatic lifestyle changes. 1. Turn raises into retirement savings. According to the WorldatWork 2018-2019 Salary Budget Survey: Top Level Results, salary budgets in the United States are projected to rise by an average of 3.2 percent in 2019, while those in Canada are expected to rise by 3 percent. Working professionals can save more for retirement by converting some or all their raises into retirement savings. Pre-tax retirement accounts allow working professionals to put aside money before taxes are paid, so weekly paychecks will not be greatly affected if you choose to increase the percentage of your income you deposit into such accounts. Do this each time you receive a raise and your retirement savings will grow considerably. 2. Put bonuses to work. Professionals who receive bonuses can speak to their employer and request that their retirement contribution rates be increased when bonuses are issued. Many 401(k) retirement plans allow workers to contribute as much as 80 percent of their paychecks. While that’s not sustainable for most people every pay period, increasing your

Did You Know? Though vaccines are usually associated with childhood or foreign travel, older adults may need certain vaccinations as they age. Even those who received immunizations as youngsters may need refresher doses or vaccinations tailored specifically to the over 50 crowd. Seniors are urged to talk to their doctors about certain vaccines.

contribution rate dramatically when your bonus is issued is a great way to save more for retirement. Contribution rates can then be returned to normal the following pay period. 3. Downsize your home. Empty nesters nearing retirement age may benefit by downsizing their homes. Doing so can reduce utility bills, property taxes and other expenses, and those savings can then be redirected into retirement accounts. 4. Reinvest tax returns. Working professionals accustomed to receiving tax returns can use that money to catch up on their retirement savings. Rather than spending tax returns or depositing them into traditional savings accounts, reinvest them into a retirement account. Speak with a financial planner to help you figure out how to accomplish this goal. Even if it requires opening a new account, the long-term benefits or reinvesting returns are substantial. Saving for retirement is important, and it’s never too late or too early to start setting aside more money for your golden years.

When the Pilgrims famously landed on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts, Fort Nassau, a Dutch base in New York, had already been established under the command of Hendrick Christiaensen in 1614. If that surprises you, then you will certainly be surprised to learn that the first American Thanksgiving, which was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, may have had some roots in the Dutch annual October Commemoration of the 1574 Lifting of the Spanish Siege of Leiden (Leyden). This Dutch celebration consisted of such traditions as the giving of thanks, feasting, war games and other such festivities. This means that a precursor to our first American Thanksgiving could well have been celebrated in New York for about 7 years before the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving celebration in 1621. While many now suggest that this Dutch celebration is an ancestor to our First American Thanksgiving and while it may, in fact, be true, it does not change what is unique about this United States holiday. Unlike several subsequent generations, the Pilgrim settlers sought peaceful coexistence with their Native American neighbors. Also, acting contrary to a litany of propaganda and commonly accepted beliefs of the time, the Pilgrim settlers invited them to sit and break bread, a fact which suggests an understanding that Native American peoples were not the subhuman creatures they were so often, and so wrongly, represented to be at that time. That terrible first winter, Puritan settlers and Native American people came together, and they survived. In the United States, we seem to keep learning this lesson of unity over and over again, and each time, it seems to be somehow connected to Thanksgiving. In October of 1863, during the American Civil War, in which at least one of the mitigating issues was the debate over the humanity and, therefore, the freedom of African Americans, President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Day of Thanksgiving to be observed on the last Thursday in November. The United States was

divided by war. It was being torn apart, and yet, a Day of Thanks was observed. At last, the Civil War ended, and while there were many results, some positive and others not, one exceptionally good outcome was that the African American people were freed from slavery. The nation was again one United States of America. We came together, and we moved forward. In November of 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated about five months after announcing his intentions of sending comprehensive Civil Rights legislation to Congress. The Kennedys specifically requested that Macy’s still hold its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, a parade which remains a central Thanksgiving Day tradition to the present. As a nation, we mourned our president; we celebrated Thanksgiving, and we continued the struggle for Civil Rights legislation until the Civil Rights Act was passed the following year. We came together, and we moved forward. The past couple of years have been divisive for many Americans. Some Americans were pleased with the results of our 2016 presidential election while other Americans were not. The political ranks have been drawn up like picket lines, threatening to divide and destroy friends and even families all across the United States. From its earliest American roots, Thanksgiving has been, in part, about bridging divides and coming together to give thanks for the common blessings we all share. Perhaps one of the most important things to be thankful for this year are the people sitting around the table with us, regardless of color, culture, creed or political position. It may take some effort, but if we can still give thanks for the blessing of each other, we will come together. We will survive. We will move forward.

Often, people search on their own, but many online real estate searches return places that are expired or not valid.” The free search that Your Home Sweet Home Realty offers is a benefit to those homeowners who are selling their home as well as to those searching for a home as it helps both find their ideal match. “We also have a big buyer base,” Rhonda Sweet adds. “We work with homeowners from start to finish, including looking for potential problems to remedy beforehand and working with a very close network of bankers and attorneys as well as offering a well-rounded team of agents.” Ms. Sweet explains that many agents do not have much, if

ACROSS 1 5 8 EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year. Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions.

HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES Decking the halls is a holiday tradition, and hosts should make an effort to string some holiday decorations before welcoming guests into their homes. A Christmas tree might be the most ubiquitous decorative item come the holidays, so hosts can make their tree the centerpiece of their decor. Hang some mistletoe around the house, which also can be adorned with season-specific plants like holly and poinsettias. If kids are attending the party, a kid-friendly decoration station can even be set up to ensure the youngsters have fun and stay busy during the festivities.
