HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other and potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. HOLIDAY FUN FACTS
STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS
Canada is a net exporter of freshcut Christmas trees. In 2016, the country exported close to two million trees.
Turn lights off when going to bed and/or leaving the house. Interior and exterior holiday lights should not be left on when no one is home or everyone inside is sleeping. If left on overnight or when no one is home, lights may contribute to fires that damage homes and may even prove fatal.

Offer Your Family the Gift of Giving this Year Having recently celebrated Thanksgiving Day and remembered our many blessings, may we not forget the twin companions of gratitude: joy and generosity. Being truly thankful for friends, family and the many good things in one’s life can create that joyful state of mind which often overflows into good will and compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves. Regrettably, with the push to purchase following so closely upon the heels of, and in some cases even preceding, Thanksgiving, this “heart-healthy” Spirit of Giving is all too often lost in the following flurry of activities. For this reason and several others, Giving Tuesday was started. Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and after the prime shopping days of Plaid Friday, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. While there is certainly much festive fun to be had in preparing for the holidays and selecting the perfect gifts for our friends and loved ones, balancing this with a mindfulness of those in need is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others, to our children and even to ourselves. For the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, this isn’t just a pleasant, seasonal platitude, these are words we live by. We practice giving back to our community in our pages and beyond. Each week, free of charge, we announce upcoming Non-Profit Events which boosts community support for non-profit and local charitable causes and community support organizations. Adoptable pets receive our help finding homes by sharing their photos in our Pet Place section. We are also privileged to bring you inspirational and interesting Hometown Stories from all over our readership area. Libraries are provided the opportunity at no cost to publish announcements on educational activities for the community, professional training programs, literacy programs and more in our Library Columns, while many organizations are able to ask for assistance thanks to our Who Can Volunteer section. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver also supports local schools, literacy, the fight against hunger, MS research and other causes. We encourage all of our readers to take time on Giving Tuesday to find a way to help those who are struggling this holiday season. Giving money is only one way to help; gifts of time, food, acts of service and even simple holiday cards can make such a difference in the lives of those who are struggling or lonely this year. Visit www.givingtuesday.org for more information on this global initiative or connect with charitable organizations in your own community. You can search through Non-profit events and local volunteer opportunities on our website at www.gvpennysaver.com. “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” — Winston S. CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy SIGNS TO An estimated 65 million Americans have some form of gum disease, which leaves them vulnerable to infection and tooth loss. Worse yet, many people are ignoring signs of gum disease that might otherwise lead them to effective treatment before their problems grow worse and more difficult to treat. It is important to recognize common symptoms of gum disease, which include spitting blood after brushing and flossing. This is a sign of the mildest form of gum disease, called “gingivitis,” which can be treated rather easily. However, symptoms such as wiggly teeth and receding gums may be indications that gum disease has progressed to more severe “periodontitis,” which warrants immediate attention to prevent both tooth and bone loss.
LOOK FOR Avoiding gum disease and achieving optimal dental hygiene success are not all that difficult. Almost everyone can accomplish both with a modest amount of time invested daily. Keeping up with home dental care as well as scheduling periodic cleanings and wellness exams are two important steps toward accomplishing the goal of a healthy mouth. For full-service dental care for all members of your family, please call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll give you a reason to smile! P.S. Symptoms of gum disease include plaque buildup, bad breath, and sensitive teeth.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: Articles on strokes or TIAs rarely mention that they can be caused by a congenital heart defect. I had a family member with a patent foramen ovale, found at age 54, after he’d had several strokes. He had surgery to repair it and has been well ever since. I would like to know why a PFO isn’t often mentioned or considered. When I see an obituary for a young person who died suddenly, I wonder if there was an undiagnosed hole in the person’s heart. One in 6 people has a hole in the heart; that is a high percentage. I think the public should be educated and made aware of this congenital condition. -- J.R. ANSWER: A patent foramen ovale (which literally means “open oval-shaped window”) is a remnant of our embryology. The foramen ovale is a small open flap that is necessary to send oxygenated blood from the placenta to the body of the developing fetus. In about 25 percent of people (that’s 1 in 4, even higher than you thought), the “hole” doesn’t completely close. PFO is the most common of the “holes” in the heart (ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defects are the other common ones). A stroke is caused by the death of brain cells. PFOs are certainly implicated in strokes. In general, the younger and healthier the person, the more likely it is that a “cryptogenic” stroke (one with no obvious cause) may be due to a PFO. What is likely is that a blood clot can pass through the foramen ovale and go to the brain’s blood vessel, blocking off blood supply to an area of the brain, causing a stroke. The absolute increase in stroke risk is hard to quantify. For people who have never had a stroke, it is generally not recommended to close the PFO. This surgery has risks, and these risks probably outweigh the small potential benefit. For people who have had a stroke, the risk of recurrent stroke from PFO is higher. One group has created a model (the RoPE score) to help predict the likelihood of recurrent stroke. This can help the clinician examine the benefits of surgical repair of the PFO. Surgery is most likely to benefit younger people without traditional risk factors for stroke. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that letting vinegar touch your skin causes arthritis. Is there any danger in using vinegar as a cleaning agent? -- N.J.A. ANSWER: I often get asked whether apple cider vinegar cures arthritis (it doesn’t) or can help relieve symptoms (it might, but there is no good evidence that it does), but I have never heard anyone ask about vinegar touching the skin causing internal problems. Vinegar is a mild acid (most are about 5 percent acetic acid), which normally isn’t particularly irritating to the skin, and shouldn’t be absorbed. Even if it were, acetic acid is found in the body (it’s an important molecule in several metabolic pathways), and your body can use it as an energy source. There is no reason to be concerned about being exposed to household vinegar. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

SCORE GREAT DEALS THIS SEASON Make purchases with a cash-back credit card. Consumers who trust themselves to pay their credit card balances in full each month can use cash-back cards to enhance their savings. Such cards reward consumers with cash back that’s equal to a percentage of each purchase made with their cards. For example, a 2 percent cash-back card will return $2 to consumers for every $100 they spend using their cash-back card. While using these cards won’t do much to combat crowds, shoppers might be happy to wait on line knowing that their deals will prove even more rewarding than advertised.

HOW TO MANAGE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TRIPS WITH TOTS IN TOW
Unique Holiday Gifts F rom the H ea rt Crafts and Gift Shop
Holiday shopping has changed considerably since the dawn of the Information Age. Whereas holiday shopping once required shoppers to spend hours perusing stores at the local mall, nowadays many shoppers get the bulk of their shopping done online. Shopping online may be convenient, but more traditional holiday shopping still affords shoppers the chance to find great deals, especially at the last minute. Parents may prefer to leave the kids at home when holiday shopping, but sometimes they don’t have a choice. Fortunately, there are ways to manage holiday shopping trips with kids in tow.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off.

5018 RIDGE ROAD WEST 352-1111 ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

Thanks to all those who came to my husband’s rescue when he fell October 31 in the driveway at the Livingston Skilled Nursing Facility. What a bunch of caring and helpful people. Thanks again to all. Have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas. My daughter and I were walking on the Trolley Trail on Saturday, November 10. It was very cold and very windy, and our orange, white, and blue BB8 Blanket fell out of the stroller. We didn't notice until we got home, and it was too cold to take her out again. The next morning, we went out looking
There are certain stores in my area that always have only one (or on rare occasions, two) cash registers open. It drives me absolutely NUTS that people will be in line with at least fifty items and will very clearly see me or someone else behind them in line with only one item but not offer to let us ahead of them. Please consider this the next time you are shopping and the person in line behind you has only an item or two. I promise, it takes mere seconds to for us to get through the line.
for the blanket, fearing the worst. However, a nice person had found the blanket, and tied it to a post so that we would see it and so it wouldn't blow away in the wind. Thank you very much! You've made my threeyear old very happy. She says, "thank you," and didn't let go of BB8 until we got home and I made her put it in the washer. Thanks again! I am ashamed that I have to write this. But then I hear that the [local town dept.] has put a stop to the FoodLink Food Truck from providing food to the community in their parking lot. The people who used to go and get food were people who needed that extra help once a month. ONCE A MONTH! And the [local dept.] will not even allow this. I thought that it was the town's taxpayers who paid for the parking lot, so shouldn't they be able to use it once a month? [Local dept.] ought to be ashamed of themselves. blood work results. Mainly I was concerned about my thyroid #. You should know my name after 10 years and maybe know why I am there. When I arrived, my 1pm appointment was really 2pm. They said sorry we were swamped this morning (they close between 12-1pm for lunch). When I finally was brought to the examination room, I was told the doctor would be in shortly. 35 minutes later, my doctor came into the room and said, “good news, your blood work came back great!" Once she took the time from my 5-minute visit to glance at her computer, she noticed my thyroid was off the charts. She thought her mistake was funny! I did not! Needless to say, I’m in the process of finding a new doctor.

Improve crossword-solving skills Crossword puzzles are an integral component of newspapers. In addition to their entertainment quality, crossword puzzles can help improve cognition and brain health in individuals of all ages. The first known crossword puzzle to be published was created by a British journalist named Arthur Wynne, who is often credited as the inventor of crosswords. The first puzzle appeared in the New York World on December 21, 1913. The original crossword was diamond-shaped and did not feature the familiar black squares. CROSSWORD
“In any contest between power and patience, bet on patience.....” ~ W.B Prescott Patience is indeed a virtue. “All things come to he who waits” is an old adage that few will dispute. It’s exciting to watch sheer power in action…the forces of nature, for example, can be awesome. But it is the patient, gentle rain rather than the almighty hurricane that makes things grow. The most powerful tyrants of history have eventually fallen to more patient forces of moderation. And, although few of us will ever wield impressive power, every one of us is capable of being patient…a characteristic everyone can, and should, develop. Our years of experience and our deep understanding of human needs enables us to serve most effectively. Ask us about the advantages of pre-planning funerals, well in advance of need.

Brockport Cheers for 6th Annual Holiday of Lights Parade By Amanda Dudek On Sunday, December 2nd at 5pm, the 6th Annual Holiday of Lights Parade will begin just north of the canal near the hospital and continue down Main Street in Brockport. This thoroughly enjoyable, family-friendly, holiday event will once again be sponsored by the Brockport Police Department’s Stetson Club. “Each year, we have had a really good turn out,” said Stetson Club President, Joshua Sime. “Several families and friends come out to see the parade.” This year is planning to follow proudly in this holiday tradition with many gorgeous floats and several visitors. As in years past, the parade will be hosted by MCs. This year’s MCs will be Caurie Putnam of the Democrat & Chronicle and The Mayor Pete Kennedy of the Mix 100.5. Everything participating in the parade will be covered in lights, from firetrucks to ambulances to snow plows to floats. Many of the floats will be sponsored and created by local businesses who go above and beyond in their attempt to create the most elaborate and festive float in the parade. Not only do local businesses compete with their floats because it is good fun, but they also compete because the floats are in competition and are judged at the end of the parade with prizes for the winners. It’s not just the floats and vehicles that are decorated, however. People and bands participating in the parade will be decked out in holiday finery, as well.
Go Figure!
The Holiday of Lights Parade has grown to include anywhere from 25 to 40 floats, and the Stetson Club, the local businesses and the community put a lot of work into getting the event together. As the last floats come into view, Santa and Mrs. Claus can be seen riding along in the parade, waving to visitors and greeting the children. The parade concludes in front of the Brockport Diner for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Village shops, restaurants and other businesses offer warm and inviting spaces for parade goers to visit and explore, as well, which adds greatly to the feel of an entire community coming together. At the end of the parade, as the tree is being lit, a spectacular fireworks display will commence, courtesy of Skylighters. This parade in the heart of Brockport certainly celebrates the season with color, light, sound, flash and spectacle. Come on out and join the holiday fun!
