The Team To Vote For Village Trustee Maggie Ridge
Tuesday, March 20, 2018 Christie Offen Polls Open from Noon – 9pm Wheatland Municipal Building, 22 Main Street The Village of Scottsville, like most municipalities, is facing economic challenges. The desire to keep the services our residents have come to depend on, and the need to pay for these services will mean some tough choices in the weeks and years ahead. We have demonstrated our work ethic and dedication to the Village as Board, Committee, and Volunteer members in many community organizations. We have our own complementary strengths, and look forward to sharing them with our fellow residents, friends and neighbors. Capable ~ Accountable ~ Dedicated Paid for by Maggie Ridge & Christie Offen.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Gus Gus. I got that name before my family saw that I have a pattern on my belly that looks like two G’s! I came from Lollypop Farm when I was four months old and now I am a 3-year-old goofball! I love to talk, parkour off furniture and people, and play fetch with my favorite toys. I always greet my family at the door when they come home! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
To sponsor the Pet of the Week, Call 226-8111 or email sales@gvpennysaver.com

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Congratulations, Lamb. This is the week to finish your project and then bask in your well-earned approval. (And if you like, you also can say “bah” to all those detractors.) TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The bold Bovine could find a new opportunity too intriguing to be ignored. But don’t charge into it. Go slowly so you see how things develop as you get more involved. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might try to soften your stand on that important issue. A little more flexibility actually could get you what you’re looking for. A new friend enters the picture midweek. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your inner voice is on the mark when it advises you to tackle that family problem now! The sooner you’re able to come to terms with it, the better it will be for everyone. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Someone reveals important news about a longtime associate. But before you decide how to deal with this information, make sure it’s reliable, and not simply self-serving. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some intensive soul-searching early in the week can help you reach a decision by week’s end that should please both you and the other person involved. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The possibility of a career change is intriguing. Learn more about what it can offer and what it cannot. Weigh everything carefully. And ask questions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Work is your priority this week as you try to make up for lost time. Expect help from someone who cares about you. Things take a welcome turn by the weekend. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A health problem causes some anxiety early in the week. But prompt medical attention soon eases everyone’s concerns. Enjoy an arts-filled weekend. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) As much as you might resent it, a changing situation could require you to adjust your plans accordingly. The good news: An associate agrees to cooperate. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) That old problem is finally resolved, just in time for you to take on a new work-related project. This one could be the super door-opener you’ve been looking for. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The early part of the week presents some difficult hurdles. But once you get over them, you can start to focus on matters that are more important to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and your dedication to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult that might be. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: In the wake of recent events, there has been a lot of discussion about the impact that playing violent video games has on today’s youth and the way that they react to situations. How do you think our youth are influenced by video games? • They are just games and do not encourage violent behavior in youth. • Games that focus on shooting the opponent make our youth believe that this is the way to overcome tough situations. • More research needs to be done to fully understand the impact. Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.
“The secret of happiness is curiosity…” ~ Norman Douglas
Boredom is certainly one of the worst of afflictions. Try to imagine how the dreary hours must drag when one is totally bored! Happily, there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored. In this wonderful world there are so many wonders we can explore… so many more delightful things to know about than we can possibly investigate. It starts with childhood. The curious child is happy as he inquires and learns. There is no reason why we should ever lose this childlike thirst for knowledge, especially since curiosity leads to happiness. We are pleased that most of the families that come to us do so because of the recommendation of friends whom we have been privileged to serve. Ask your friends about us.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y
AUTO SECTION
Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

Cruising tips and tricks Cruising can be an ideal vacation for people of any age, but particularly for seniors. Cruises combine all-inclusive meal packages with accommodations, breathtaking ports of call and pre-arranged activities, so vacationers do not have to lift a finger for days on end. Cruising also can be a social activity, meaning singletons can meet up with other like-minded people and enjoy the cruising experience together. Cruise Lines International Association, a global organization advocating for the cruising community, found that 25.8 million passengers expected to take a cruise in 2017, and various cruise companies invested more than $6.8 billion in new ocean vessels.

The Grinch is back again this Christmas in our well-to-do town south of Rochester. There are no Christmas lights along our Main Street, only dark dreary winter pennants. Several years ago, which was the last year our illuminated Christmas lanterns were put up, we noticed that there was
something wrong with them. Upon further inspection, many if not most of the lights inside them were burned out. The lanterns were still intact. Someone was either too lazy to replace the bulbs or it was planned to get rid of them. At least they gave a nice warm glow to our Main Street. All of the surrounding hamlets have Christmas lights except us. They have the Christmas spirit! Sadly dark winter pennants are a poor substitute for lighted decorations. WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

CARE CONSULTATIONS Our professional staff is dedicated to helping you and your family navigate your journey with Alzheimer’s disease. During a care consultation, we can help assess your needs and discuss care planning, home safety and other concerns.
800.272.3900 alz.org/rochesterny BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Unnecessary Procedure on Terminal Patient It’s a fact that you already know. A mammogram can find lumps in the breast long before they are found any other way. A mammorgram only takes minutes. If you are uninsured and 40-64 years old, it’s FREE. So, what’s stopping you from calling right now?

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy ACCUMULATED WISDOM “Wisdom” teeth, the third and final set of molars that usually erupt between ages 17 and 21, are located at the farthest comers of the upper and lower dental arches. They derive their popular name from the notion that they erupt when we are more mature. Because there is often no space left for them to occupy, they can become misaligned or impacted. If they do not come in straight, it can be very difficult to floss between the wisdom teeth and the molars next to them. Even worse, misaligned wisdom teeth can damage neighboring teeth, and impacted teeth can lead to the formation of a cyst. For these reasons, misaligned and impacted wisdom teeth should be surgically removed. Whether it involves wisdom teeth, cosmetic work, simple fillings, or complex restorations, any program we
suggest for your dental health will be thoroughly discussed with you before we begin. When you are looking for state-of-the-art, personalized dentistry from people who really care, welcome to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Our dental team works smoothly and efficiently together, devoted to making your dental experience comfortable as well as enhancing. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. At Batavia Family Dental, You Will Have A Positive Experience! P.S. Wisdom teeth that remain in the mouth should be regularly monitored for changes and potential problems.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother has stage 4 cancer. She just went to a dermatologist, who performed Mohs surgery on her nose. I am BEYOND upset by this unethical behavior. The country is already deeply in debt, and Medicare is paying for this? Unconscionable! Not to mention the pain and suffering of my mother, who is now at risk of a secondary infection. I was sickened by the entire ordeal. -- J.B. ANSWER: I agree with you completely that often patients with terminal diseases receive unnecessary care. There have been studies clearly documenting this. However, the studies don’t answer why, in a particular case, a physician performed these treatments, which add only pain, anxiety and expense. I suppose it is possible that the motivation is simple greed; however, I still have enough faith in my colleagues that I think that is a very unusual reason; I think it’s far more likely that a specialist just doesn’t see the big picture. There’s an old expression that when all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail, and I think some specialists see a problem and fix it without realizing that the problem they are fixing isn’t likely to ever cause symptoms. For example, primary-care doctors order unnecessary tests, especially screening tests. I see mammograms ordered for women with advanced colon or ovarian cancer who are in palliative care, and this makes no sense. I have heard some physicians mention that insurance companies monitor the frequency of “quality indicators,” such as mammograms, which affect their ratings and reimbursement. That’s an example of a well-meaning system motivating wrong behavior. I should emphasize that not all care for terminal patients is useless. If the goal is to improve quality of life or reduce suffering, then I am all for it, after a consideration of the costs (pain and inconvenience as well as dollar costs). *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a bloodborne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Renowned Ballerina Aesha Ash Encourages Byron-Bergen Students to Dream Bigger By Christine Klem Ballet star Aesha Ash told the hundreds of students at Byron-Bergen Elementary that when she was growing up in Rochester, “there were no princesses or fairies that looked like me. There were no magical creatures, unicorns or swans that looked like me.” When she dreamed of being a ballerina, she was told that there were no black ballerinas, and that she would never succeed. She dreamed anyway, and she did succeed. She was accepted to the legendary School of American Ballet where she was chosen to join the New York City Ballet when she was 18 – one of the first black dancers in the corps. How did this world-famous dancer and winner of the National Women’s History Museum’s 2016 Women Making History Award, come to be in Byron-Bergen? Fourth-grade teacher Alyson Tardy heard about Ash’s Swan Dreams Project, which was founded in 2011. This project uses powerful imagery to counter negative stereotypes of race and socio-economic background and inspire children to dream bigger. She thought that Ash’s message would be a great tie-in to the school’s character education program. She invited Ash and coordinated the special visit. Students surprised their visitor with a hallway lined with artwork featuring swans of many shapes and colors. “The art is so beautiful,” said Ash. “I’m honored that the kids welcomed me this way.” At the crowded assembly, Ash shared her story with attentive students, beginning with her passion for dance and her determination to become a ballerina. She explained how she was part of Rochester’s Urban Suburban program, and constantly faced questions and misunderstanding from peers about her background and city neighborhood. Her family was not rich; she told

the story of borrowing toe shoes for her first tryout. Even when Ash became a professional ballet dancer, she felt a sense of not belonging, of being different. “All my life, I’ve fought to change perceptions and dispel myths – for myself, my family and my Rochester community,” she said. “The more that people told me that I couldn’t do something, the more I wanted to do it.” Ash’s professional dance career lasted 13 years. It included eight years with the NYC Ballet along with performing in the Bejart Ballet in Switzerland and Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, and with many other companies as a freelance artist. She and her family currently live in California where she is working to make the Swan Dreams Project an afterschool program. She hopes to open a studio where she can teach ballet to children who are not able to afford lessons. The Swan Dreams Project video she shared with Byron-Bergen students can be found at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v= 7h58rXzsNhU

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848.
