H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of possibilities begin to open up by midweek. Some seem more appealing than others. But wait for more facts to emerge later on before you consider which to choose. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bravo to the determined Bovine. While others might give up, you continue to search for answers. Expect your Taurean tenacity to begin paying off by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to consider stepping back from the task at hand for a while. This could help you get a better perspective on what you’ve done and what still needs to be done. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your keen Cancerian insight should help you determine whether a new offer is solid or just more fluff ‘n’ stuff. The clues are all there waiting for you to find them. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Being ignored is difficult for any proud Leo or Leona. But pushing yourself back into the spotlight might be unwise. Instead, let things work themselves out at their own pace. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to uncover a colleague’s secret under the pretext of showing concern is ill-advised. Control your curiosity to avoid raising resentment in the workplace. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Expect to hear good news about a loved one. Also, be prepared for some changes in several family relationships that could develop from this lucky turn of events. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprises are expected to accompany a number of changes that will continue through part of next week. At least one could involve a romantic situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to have faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace goal that suddenly seems out of reach is no problem for the sure-footed Goat, who moves steadily forward despite any obstacles placed in his or her way. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Uncertainty about who is right and who isn’t might keep you from making a clear-cut decision. Wait until you know more about what you’re being asked to decide. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful to keep your emotions in check when dealing with a demanding personal situation. You need to set an example of strength for others to follow. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an extraordinary ability to rally people to do their best. You would be a treasure as a teacher.

LeRoy Hearth and Home 7149 W. Main Rd. • LeRoy •␣585-502-0139 POST-WINTER GARDEN PREP Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.
DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING
IT’S FINALLY HERE… AIR CONDITIONING SEASON
People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

Be A Host-a-Racer! Fairport, NY will host an overnight stop on the
2018 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty, Saturday, June 23. The Great Race, the world’s premier old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to town for the $150,000 event, with the first car rolling onto South Main Street downtown starting at 4:30 p.m.
Teams and cars from Japan, England, Germany, Canada and every corner of the United States will be participating in their vintage automobiles dating back as far as 1913. “There are more than 500 people just in our entourage from all around the world taking part in this incredible adventure,” director Jeff Stumb said. Along the route, competitors will travel through four states - New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine - and two Canadian provinces - New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The Great Race, which began 35 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins. Cars start - and hopefully finish - one minute apart if all goes according to plan. The biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day, organizers say. Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a firsthand look. For more info, go to www.greatrace.com or contact Jeff Stumb at jeff@greatrace.com or 423-648-8542.

CROSSWORD
“One of the secrets of a happy life is to forgive everybody everything every night before you go to bed…” ~ from Ann Landers
It’s an imperfect world we all live in and no doubt we all experience situations that give us good cause to feel hurt sometimes very deeply hurt. Somehow we feel that if we “nurse our grudge” and vow never to forgive the one who hurts us, we are somehow getting even. Actually, such repressed hatreds hurt us much more than anyone else. Even if we fail to understand why someone has acted hatefully toward us, if we can forgive them and forget the incident, we have established control and we will be happier for doing so. We serve all faiths, creeds and fraternal orders with perfectly appropriate services. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

Learn about cataracts to see more clearly Many people take their vision for granted until a problem arises that affects their ability to see. While certain conditions may occur suddenly, others develop more gradually and may not even be noticeable until the problem has progressed significantly. Cataracts are a common vision problem that is often associated with aging. The National Eye Institute says that, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Prevent Blindness America says there are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined. The American Optometric Association defines a cataract as a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye. Depending on its size, cataracts can interfere with normal vision. They typically occur in people over the age of 55. A cataract can be present in one or both eyes. The lens is responsible for helping to focus light or an image on the retina. In a healthy lens, fluid and protein are arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear, offers NEI. However, as one ages, the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. Over time, this clouding may grow. Researchers also suspect there are other causes to cataracts, such as smoking or diabetes. In addition, wear and tear on the lens can develop into cataract clouding. Significant alcohol consumption, UV radiation, eye surgery, and high myopia also may contribute to cataract formation. All About Vision says the types of cataracts include: • Subcapsular cataract, which occurs at the back of the lens; • Nuclear cataract, which forms deep in the central zone of the lens; and • Cortical cataract, which starts as white opacities in the periphery of the lens and then grows inward.
SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

The Mayo Clinic advises that there are no known methods to prevent cataracts or slow their progression. But choosing a healthy diet full of antioxidants, quitting bad habits like smoking, managing diabetes, and having regular eye examinations can help. It’s also a good idea to wear sunglasses that block against UVA and UVB light when outdoors. Cataracts can cause blurring of vision and even make it difficult to see in bright conditions. Colors may seem faded, night vision may be adversely affected and glare may be problematic. The AOA says that early cataracts typically are not treated and changes to prescriptions may provide temporary visual improvement. If a cataract progresses to the point that it affects one’s ability to perform everyday tasks, surgery in which an artificial lens replaces the natural lens may be necessary. Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2018
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
How Low Is Too-Low Blood Pressure? --DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written many articles about high blood pressure, but I want to know about low blood pressure. What is normal? What is low, and what is dangerously low? I have a heart issue for which I take medication. I want to know if my blood pressure is too low. -- Anon. ANSWER: Among young adults, only 5 percent of men will have a blood pressure below 110/60 or so, and for young women, it’s 90/46. Blood pressure tends to go up with age, so low blood pressure numbers are higher for older adults. For people with healthy hearts, the only time we worry about low blood pressure is if there are symptoms, and the most common symptoms are lightheadedness and fainting. In people with congestive heart failure, low blood pressure usually is not concerning in itself, but because it might indicate that the heart is getting weaker. However, many of the medications used for CHF reduce blood pressure, which can even limit the amount of medication that can be used. In people with blockages in their arteries, too low a blood pressure can cause inadequate blood flow to parts of the heart and cause angina symptoms. The blood pressure is dangerously low when a disease process is causing the low blood pressure. In extreme cases, low blood pressure is one of the most dangerous signs of shock. But in general, for healthy people, low blood pressures are not worrisome. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: I have received more letters about hearing loss than I would have believed possible. Most of the advice was consistent, so let me review what both professionals and people who have been through the process of getting hearing aids have advised. First, have realistic expectations about what a hearing aid can do. It does not make your hearing what it was 50 years ago. Loud noises can be painfully overamplified. Second, find someone who really knows what he or she is doing. The people whose technicians spent a lot of time teaching, discussing the different options and adjusting them after purchase were the most satisfied. (The adjustment period can take weeks.) A referral from a satisfied friend could be a good place to start. Several professionals recommended that your audiologist be certified by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association. Third, be prepared to spend some money. Good hearing aids are expensive. More expensive doesn’t always mean better, but most of my readers felt that the money they spent on hearing aids was well worth it. I’m sure there are some great ones, and some not as great. Many veterans wrote me to tell me about their (mostly) good experiences at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Fourth, try many models. Some people prefer in-the-ear, some overthe-ear. Because it takes a long time to get used to them, you need to wear them pretty much constantly. Both your ears and your brain need time to adjust, so be patient. Finally, several people and one chapter president wrote to me about the Hearing Loss Association of America (www.hearingloss.org) and the benefit they gained from visiting their local chapter and sharing their experiences. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.
We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE When an extra (“supernumerary”) tooth develops in the mouth, it most often involves the appearance of an adult incisor called a “mesiodens” (or “middle tooth”), which appears between the upper central incisors (top front teeth). Only about one percent to three percent of the population is affected, and males are twice as likely to develop supernumerary teeth as females. In any case, the tendency to produce supernumerary teeth seems to be inherited. Owing to the fact that supernumerary teeth are unsightly and may cause damage to adjacent teeth and affect the permanent dentition, extraction is generally recommended. It is best to do so before age five, when the root of the mesiodens is not yet fully developed. Today, there is no need to worry about an imperfect smile - it can be repaired using any number of the
methods now available. Whether your child has an extra tooth that needs removal, or you are unhappy with teeth that are not white and bright, for more information about the many advantages of cosmetic dentistry, or for an appointment for family dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we accept most insurances. At Batavia Family Dental, You Will Have A Positive Experience! P.S. By scheduling regular checkups for young children, extra teeth, missing teeth, and other potential tooth problems can be detected early and treated with fewer complications.

Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” ~Robin Williams
Paul Bagdon’s Journey to Working His Passion By Danielle Lorenzo Paul Bagdon was, as a medical malpractice case supervisor for years, working the clock and the corporate structure on a daily basis. During this time, he was able write a little, publishing a short story or an article here and there. Then, Bagdon made the gutsy decision to leave his position to focus on what he really loved to do, write. Paul Bagdon, who now resides at the Baird Nursing Home, still enjoys reading and composing stories. Bagdon said, “I knew if I never left and tried my hand at full-time writing, I would always regret it. If I didn’t go for it, I would be stuck somewhere, at 90 years of age, thinking, ‘I should have’.” Paul has sold roughly 50 books and over 250 of his short stories and articles have appeared in a variety of magazines. The writer also has many novels under pen names, one being Paige Lee Elliston. His first novel sale was a young adult science fiction series that was published by Ballantine Books fifteen years ago. Since then there have been twenty-seven other book sales and over 250 short stories and articles have appeared in a wide range of magazines. Paul’s favorite genre to write is Western novels and two of his novels – Bad Medicine and Deserter were Spur Award finalists.
The Spur award is given by the Western Writers of America and honors distinguished writing about the American West. He stated, “I would still write to this day, whether I was being paid or not. It was tough at first – I was divorced and I did not have much money. I ate a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. But, I knew if I didn’t go for it, I never would.” Bagdon started a writing school which is still going strong. There are open meet-ups at Webster Library on Mondays from 6:30pm-9:00pm. The focus is writing for publication and some attendees have several of their own books published.

whoever received it had just opened it and kept it. You have restored my faith in the goodness of people! Many thanks!
You saved Mother’s Day! Many thanks to the kind person who
received my Macy's package in error on 5/9, and delivered it to my home in Batavia. My address had been cut off, and I have no idea where the Post Office actually left it. It contained a Mother's Day present from my college-student daughter, who saved several paychecks to buy it for me. We were both feeling terrible after having been notified it had been delivered, but knowing we did not receive it. It must have taken you time and effort to track me down using only a partial name and street address. We were so relieved when my son called and said someone had dropped it off at our side door! I was really afraid it had been stolen, or that
Thank you to 3 out of 4 local nursery programs, who said yes to my 4 year old child to attend their daycare. Even though my child could only attend 2 out of the 3 days/week, they felt it was to my child's benefit to attend for the 2 days, and they would provide me with the day missed so I can teach what they missed. The 3 daycares said 2 days was better than not going at all to advance to kindergarten. A BIG thank you to having my child's well-being first.
Friday the 11th, around 7:30pm I fell down in the Wegmans store entry at the flower area! You came over to make sure I was okay! I was so embarrassed and aggravated with myself, that I didn’t thank you! Please accept my thanks and gratitude for your kindness!
Schlepping your puppy around in a baby sling makes it crystal clear that you are gaming the ADA by claiming your newborn dog is a service animal. It is a pet that you choose to carry around like an infant, taking it out in the checkout of a grocery store. No, the employees can't ask you anything, BUT I CAN! I called you out and I will do so each and every time I
witness people like you taking advantage of a law created to help the truly disabled live full lives. Licking your fingers while you shop for groceries doesn't count as a 'service'. My JD has Yale stamped on it. Your GED didn't help you argue your case very intelligently. How disappointed, unhelpful and morally lacking. On March 19th, late in the afternoon, I was pulling into a local store parking lot when I hit the curb. I parked in the handicap spot. A lady tapped on my window and said "Your wheelchair fell out of your container on the back of your car; it is over there in the parking lot." As she walked towards the store, she turned and also said "your door is open on the container." I wish I had responded to her limited willingness to help, but I missed my opportunity. It is hard to
retrieve a wheelchair from the ground when you only have one leg to stand on. Thanks for the help lady, and to those who drove by while I hopped for my wheels. To the wife who wrote on her husband's behalf regarding the naked neighbor. You put a smile on a lot of faces with that vent, made my husband and I laugh. Sounds like you can't do anything about it and you're probably encouraging her to walk around naked. Stop complaining for your husband. He could just stop looking. We live at the [local apartment complex]. It's hard for us to figure out how [big box store] would allow even a single piece of debris to blow around, let alone the hundreds and hundreds of pieces line the road and the fields. It's a disgrace to our friends that come visit us. It's bad enough
who [big box store] doesn't hire a young person to keep the parking lot free from roving grocery carts but to allow the blowing trash is unacceptable. To my neighbor two houses over who left their dog outside barking at 6:45am and 8am Saturday 04/14 morning: the next time I come home at 2:30am my hand will accidentally slip on the steering wheel horn due to lack of sleep. I can't believe I have seen a Lawn Service Truck on our [Lake] Road twice this Spring. I truly hope it is just for Lawn MOWING. With all the worries of too much Phosphorous in our Finger Lakes they shouldn't be spraying anywhere near the Lake or the watershed areas. Shame on any resident who calls for their spraying services around the water that we drink!
Many thanks sent to Ravens Food Center. You truly are a blessing to the whole community. Every Saturday your smiling faces and good nature feed so many families. Thanks for all you do!! On Monday, April 16th I went to Town & Country Restaurant in Batavia for a late breakfast. When I asked my waitress for the check she told me someone had picked up my check. I didn't know anyone in the restaurant but whoever you are THANK YOU; there are a lot of good people around. THANKS AGAIN. GOD BLESS
