8353 E. Main Rd. • LeRoy, NY www.gosplashpools.com H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Before you adventurous Arians charge right into those new projects, take a little time to learn where you’ll be going so you can avoid getting lost before you get there. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your time is devoted to career demands through much of the week. But Venus, who rules your sign, might be planning how (and with whom) you’ll spend your weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be put off by the surprising turn in the way your project is developing. You’ve invested enough time in it to know how to make all the necessary adjustments. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) The work week goes smoothly for the most part. But a weekend visit to a place in your past could hold surprises for your future, especially where romance is involved. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A sudden attack of shyness for the usually loquacious Lion could be a sign that deep down you’re not sure enough about what (or whom) you had planned to talk up in public. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Deal with that job-related problem on-site -- that is, at the workplace. Avoid taking it home, where it can spoil those important personal plans you’ve made. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to let those favorable comments about your business dealings be known to those in a position to be helpful. Don’t hide your light; let it shine. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Avoid added pressure to finish a project on deadline by steering clear of distractions. To put it somewhat poetically: Time for fun -- when your tasks are done. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be uneasy about an offer from a longtime colleague. But before you reject it, study it. You might be surprised at what it actually contains. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Deal firmly with a difficult family matter. It’s your strength they need right now. You can show your emotions when the situation begins to ease up. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A recent dispute with some coworkers might not have been completely resolved. But other colleagues will be only too happy to offer support of your actions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Let go of that Piscean pride long enough to allow someone to help you with a surprising development. That could make it easier for you to adjust to the change. BORN THIS WEEK: Your willingness to open up to possibilities is why people like you are often among our most popular political leaders. (c) 2018 King Features Syndicate

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. Homeowners who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. It’s best to consult a local landscaping professional in your area to determine the best time to water each day, but in many regions the best time to water is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are generally lower, the sun is not at its peak and winds are not as strong.

Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS
Safety: Safety is the top priority for many parents as they purchase new cars for their families. Look for a car w ith a high safety rating and a proven track record of ensuring passengers survive accidents. The Insurance Institute for Highw ay Safety (w w w.iihs.org) as w ell as the National Highw ay Traffic Safety Administration (w w w.nhtsa.gov) test and rate new vehicles for safety, and parents should look up the results of these tests and ratings on any vehicle they are considering purchasing for their families.
When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hotweather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.

HOW TO BE MORE COURTEOUS WHILE DINING OUT
IDEAS FOR FAST AND EASY ENTERTAINING
Make a reservation and arrive on time. When a reservation has been made, make sure all members of the dining party arrive on time. A punctual arrival helps the restaurant run more smoothly, especially if it is a large party. If you will be running late, call the restaurant and notify them.
Chill wine effectively and quickly. On a similar note, if wine is the beverage of choice, always keep grapes frozen in a bag in the freezer. Put a few grapes in a wine glass before pouring, and the wine will be chilled without becoming watered down by ice.

While the incidence of partial/total tooth loss in adults and seniors has decreased since the early 1970s, edentia remains a potential health problem for many adults. Not only does tooth loss hamper a person’s ability to derive nutritional benefit from a varied diet, it also detracts from appearance. Moreover, recent research suggests that tooth loss at middle age is linked with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (independent of such traditional risk factors as high blood pressure, poor diet, and diabetes). According to the study, middle-aged adults who have lost two or more teeth in the recent past could be at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. This is another important reason to replace lost teeth with dentures, bridges, or implants. Our philosophy is not only to treat dental needs, but more importantly, to educate our patients to prevent future problems. To this end, our mission is to
provide open and free communication and the highest standard of care in an environment of health, mutual understanding, and respect. We offer complete general dental care, from cleanings to full mouth reconstruction to repair of any damage done by neglect or trauma. We also provide cosmetic dentistry here at 6 Batavia City Centre, for the sunniest smiles possible. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, You will have a positive experience! P.S. If left untreated, the gap(s) left by lost teeth will be filled with adjacent teeth that drift out of position, creating bite problems that may further compromise chewing.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Was Son Right to Ignore His Doctor’s Advice? --DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? -- V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve suffered from essential tremor for 16 years. I take 500 mg of primidone and 40 mg of propranolol twice daily. I’ve gradually increased the dose over the years, and the combination works quite well. What is the highest dose of these medications that I can take? Also, are there any new drugs on the market that have been proven to help? -- S.S. ANSWER: Primidone, a medication indicated for seizures, often is used off-label for essential tremor. The normal dose for essential tremor is 250-500 mg at night, but doses up to 750 mg sometimes are used. For seizures, the highest recommended dose is 2,000 mg, so although yours is at the high end of normal for essential tremor (“essential,” by the way, simply means we don’t know what is causing it; it isn’t essential for anything), you still are at a dose that’s well below the safe limit. I suspect that because you have been on it for so long, your body is used to this dose. The usual starting dose is 25 mg. Propranolol is used for many conditions, including high blood pressure and preventing migraines, but its use in essential tremor also is off-label, meaning that the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug for use for this condition. “Off-label” doesn’t necessarily mean your prescription is wrong or dangerous, only that it hasn’t been approved by the FDA. In your case, the combination of primidone and propranolol frequently is used and recommended in the medical literature. For essential tremor, experts have recommended doses up to 320 mg per day, but the dose can be limited by slow heart rate or low blood pressure. If you are doing well, there is no reason to change. Other medications frequently used for essential tremor include gabapentin and topiramate. There also are surgical treatments, deep brain stimulation, gamma knife radiation and ultrasound for resistant cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Why buy life insurance? Facing one’s mortality and the prospect of leaving family members behind is not always easy. Death, financial security and planning for the future are all difficult subjects, but planning ahead can make matters much easier in the long run. Life insurance needs frequently come up when making plans, and many people find that purchasing a life insurance policy is a worthwhile investment. Life insurance holds an important place in overall financial planning. One of the most apparent benefits of life insurance is that it will provide a considerable sum of cash upon the insured’s death, which can be put toward the cost of funeral arrangements, housing and dependent care. Beyond end-of-life bills and care, life insurance can offer other advantages, say the experts at Allstate Insurance Company. Life insurance can provide a family with a financial safety net. When a beneficiary is named, life insurance can serve as an inheritance for that person or people. Heirs may face estate taxes after a loved one dies, and life insurance benefits may help offset all or a portion of the costs.
Business owners also can use life insurance policies to their advantage. Including life insurance with the list of other benefits offered to prospective employees can entice topnotch candidates. Sole proprietors may use life insurance as a business continuation plan so that insurance proceeds can keep the business in the black until it is sold or a replacement owner is found.
There may be benefits to life insurance while a person is living as well. The life insurance information site Term Life 2 Go says that, depending on the policy, life insurance can be borrowed against to pay off debt, buy a house or live off of dividends from the life insurance investment. This can provide a source of supplemental retirement income.
Shopping for life insurance requires careful research and an understanding of the products available. Consumers should have a thorough understanding of term and whole life policies, what premiums will cost, what the death benefit will pay, and if there are any living benefits. For example, living benefits may cover some costs for chronically or terminally ill people.
Gateway Financial advisors say that many life insurance plans Working with an experienced life insurance advisor can help are extremely flexible and can be modified as needs change. Death benefits may be decreased if desired, and premiums can people navigate the types of policies available to them. be skipped, reduced or increased.

June 17, 2018
LAKELAND - Hoyt Robert Mason, 96, of Lakeland died at home January 18, 2018. He was born February 22, 1921 and grew up in Rochester, NY, the oldest of four children. He was a Marine during the Pacific Campaign in WWII. He had a life-long love of farming; however, banking became his profession. He was certified agricultural banker, manager of the Genesee Valley Union Trust Co. office in Avon, later becoming vice president of the Marine Midland Bank. He moved to Lakeland in 1971 and became manager of the First State Bank, then vice president of the Barnett Bank. Hoyt was a Rotarian with perfect attendance throughout his membership. He was presented with the Four-Way Test award in April of 2017 by the Lakeland Rotary Club. He was also a Freemason and a member of the Avon Springs Lodge. Hoyt was a devout Christian and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a do-it-yourselfer with a large collection of tools. He loved to tell stories about his early years and his relationships with many of his customers at the bank. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy, and his second wife, Doris. He is survived by his wife, Paula Beikirch, his children Linda Lindstrom, Hoyt R. Mason, Jr., Paul R. (Sandy) Mason, Carol Kahlenberg, Sandra (Ed) Chambers, Tom (Pam) Beikirch, Betsy (Mike) Godwin, brother John (Beverly), 11 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Central Presbyterian Church, Avon, NY with Masonic Rites at 5:30pm and Service of Celebration at 6:00pm followed by a reception in the church hall.
THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning protects families faced with sudden death. Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away.

“The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up…” ~ J. M. Power What a dreary world it would be if we had no dreams of the things to which we aspire. It is our dreams that shape our goals. We imagine the situations that would make us happy, then direct our efforts toward making those dreams come true. The important thing is that we recognize that achievement is a two part program. First, we dream of the goals we desire. Then we work as hard as we can to make those dreams come true. Unless we wake up and put part two into effect, our dreams are worthless. Our years of experience enables us to provide funerals that are beautiful as well as comforting. You can safely place your trust in us.

Did you know? The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.

Thank you to the Avon Garden Club for the beautiful flowers in the planters throughout the village and around the park. You all do a beautiful job. I especially love the flower cart. Thank you to the village crew for your help hanging the military banners and keeping our village looking so nice. The Memorial Day parade was great as usual. Thanks! On Thursday evening, June 14, after shopping, we stopped at Burger King on Eastern Blvd. in Canandaigua for a light supper meal. When we went to pay, we were informed that the gentleman ahead of us had already picked up the tab. What a wonderful gesture! We did not catch his name or address, so we can't acknowledge him personally. But we would at
I recently enjoyed a local town parade. But there was one float I didn't find appropriate. It had heavy metal music playing loudly, people with painted, blood-like faces, and other gory features. I know this is advertising for your Halloween party, but please, less creepy stuff ? There are children watching and I find some of the
least like to thank him in this venue for his kindness and generosity. . So, if he happens to be reading this, a heartfelt "thank you." In our 70+ years on this planet, we have never experienced anything like this before. Mike and Gerda Speziale, Naples, NY I have been running on the canal towpath for years and am finally getting around to publicly thanking the courteous town landscape crews that mow the grass along the towpath and in Perinton Park. I very much appreciate the way you pause your machines when pedestrians and bicyclists approach, not resuming until we are out of the line of fire from your grass
cutting equipment. Thank you! Many thanks to whoever turned my husband’s treasured sun glasses lost at the Bristol Fun Day on the 10th! They belonged to his father who died many years ago. The Ray Ban glasses in the battered original case were anything but impressive at first sight, so we were delighted when we called the Bristol Town Hall to learn they were found and safe. My husband was grieving the loss. What a tribute to kindness. Many blessings to the finder and the Town Hall Staff. Sincere Thanks to two individual Good Samaritans, who driving by on a very rainy and windy night, stopped to help us pull down a large tree branch in our yard that had broken and was
displays very disturbing. Kids are sensitive, and have very good memories. It's likely to give them nightmares! I remember when I was a kid, and I saw something I found scary, I would not be able to stop thinking about it, and would keep my mom up. PLEASE think about the community, and the kids and parents!
wife's birthday to come to this place. Our waitress was very friendly for the first 15 minutes lol. After that all went to bananas!!! Everything went wrong from A to Z to say the least. We are not the only customers who had this very bad experience. Our friends had it all. They never celebrated my wife's birthday with me. The owner was embarrassed by it. Not easy being a waitress I know but I still gave 20% tips…Come on.
We work so very hard to endure life's journey. Therefore, we want to go out to a very nice dinner with our hard earned money to have a great meal and service with the spouse and IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK? We have heard bad reviews about a local small town restaurant that specializes in Prime Ribs near our home, but we decided to give it a chance. I've made reservation for my
Just read with great agreement, the "Vent" of June 1, 2018, concerning residents in his town not taking care of their property. We too, live in a Rochester area town. We have watched as older residents, pass on or move away. The "new" residents DO NOT take care of their homes and/or yards. We have called our Town,
going to fall in the road. In addition, after they got it down, one of them had a chain saw and they cut up the limb and helped take the pieces out of the road. We doubt if we could have done this ourselves and could have been hurt while trying. Many thanks again from Bob and Debbie Joseph, Rt. 53, Ingleside, NY.
mailed our Supervisor, and all to no avail. As our Cities become more "Upscale", the more impoverished, head to the surrounding suburbs. Leading to "Urban Sprawl." Our street looks like a War Zone. Yards not mowed and trash just sitting by the roadside. Most do not have a trash collector. They expect the town to pick up garbage. We may have no choice, but to move out if things don't improve. This is getting crazy. Please, please people, take pride in our neighborhood!!! People still burn their garbage in Livingston County. It’s not allowed!! Does anyone know who I can contact? I have my windows open to air out my home and have to smell their garbage! Need help to give me information on who to call.

23 Morgan Court, Brockport • 585.857.3096 DesignerDogsandCats.com Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.
It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement. Y’all have become my extended family. We have shared oh so many funny, sad, happy stories…and not always about our furbabies! You have stood by me thru my cancer treatment, while caring for my infant granddaughter which put your pet’s grooming behind a bit, sudden schedule changes for family reasons and all without complaint. You have been awesome clients. And your furbabies have left paw prints on my heart. I have enjoyed our time together and am sorry it is ending so soon. I am hopeful that my shop will not close. I am in contact with a groomer who is interested in taking over. Please give him a chance, just as you gave me a chance.

After moving, getting acclimated to a new neighborhood and making new friends is one way to feel at home.
Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
