ENJOY FRESH, SEASONAL FOODS. Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives. The vivid colors and smells emanating from farmers’ markets indicate just how fresh and nutritious the offerings tend to be. Farmers who peddle their wares at farmers’ markets adhere to careful farming methods to ensure their foods are as nutritious as possible.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight. Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. It’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season.

However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Sprains and strains: Sprains are injuries to ligaments, or the bands of tough, fibrous tissue that connect two or more bones at a joint. Strains impact a muscle or a tendon, which connects muscles to bones. Clinical research has linked acute strains and sprains to improper warm-up before sports, fatigue and previous injuries. Preparticipation conditioning and stretching can help reduce the risk of injury.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Drain and oven cleaners: Many drain and oven cleaners contain lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), a chemical derived from salt or wood ash that is used to break down other substances, particularly those that are sticky. Lye is quite caustic in high amounts and extremely alkaline, which can cause burns and skin irritation. Lye is also found in soaps and detergents. When handled correctly in safe amounts, lye can be used safely. However, it can be dangerous if it gets into the hands of children or is touched by pets.

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy FIXING A CRACKED TOOTH A cracked tooth is a fracture in the tooth enamel that can be caused by wear and tear; aging; grinding of the teeth (bruxism); chewing ice, gum, nuts, or hard candies; or biting down hard on a bone, pit, or other hard object. Cracked teeth are often difficult to diagnose because the crack may not be visible even on an x-ray. The first symptom of a cracked tooth is usually pain when biting or discomfort when inhaling. A crack can get larger and deeper with further wear and may cause serious injury to the tooth or promote infection. Depending on the severity of the crack, it can be treated with dental bonding, a veneer, or a crown. The pain of a cracked tooth is the body’s way of signaling that something is wrong. When you ignore the pain, however, you also

ignore the underlying problem, and relief slips farther and farther away. Be smart! For excellence in dental care from a compassionate staff committed to your comfort, well-being, and sunny smile, call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment. Emergencies are also welcome at our full-service, stateof-the-art dental office, located at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246. P.S. “Craze lines,” tiny, shallow, painless cracks that affect only the outer enamel, are common for adults. They can be treated if they are deemed to be unattractive.

FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2018

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Vegan Does Not Need Fish to be Healthy --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been vegan for 15 years. I avoid sugar, limit salt and have no caffeine. Recently, a pharmacist told me that I will not get proper protein unless I add fish to my diet. However, long ago, my doctor told me that my vegan diet was good and that I should take vitamin B-12 daily, which I have been doing. What are your thoughts on adding fish? -- S.N. ANSWER: I agree with your doctor. A vegan diet can be very healthy, and avoiding sugar in particular helps assure that it is. The issue of adequate protein is brought up frequently, but most Americans consume more than twice the recommended daily allowance of protein. Plant foods have plenty of protein, and you certainly do not need to eat fish in order to get adequate protein. I think fish can be a healthy part of a diet, but it is not necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital several months ago with poor heart function and only 10 percent kidney function. He has been on dialysis three times a week since then. We have been inquiring for several months about his current kidney function, and we cannot get an answer. We are just curious as to whether there has been any improvement. -- S.K. ANSWER: Dialysis is a way of replacing kidney function when the kidneys can no longer remove enough of the body’s waste materials. It sounds like your husband is on hemodialysis, where the blood is run through a machine that removes excess fluid and waste products, such as creatinine and potassium, which would otherwise increase in concentration in the blood. High potassium is life-threatening, and creatinine, though not dangerous, is the molecule we look at most commonly to estimate kidney function. Very rarely, kidney function can return even after a prolonged time on dialysis. I have never seen a case, but one study showed two cases per thousand where dialysis could be stopped. The clue that kidney function was returning was that urine output, which normally is scant while on hemodialysis, had increased over time. Unfortunately, 99.8 percent of the time, the kidney failure is permanent. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old male, and I have been heavy for most of my life. Over the past 18 months, I have lost a great deal of weight and feel better than I have in years. My issue is where the excess has ended up: just below my belt-line. I know that so-called spot reducing doesn’t work, so I’m at a loss as to how to go about getting rid of this paunch. It’s not above my belt, and it is stubborn. Any ideas? -- T.C. ANSWER: If you keep losing weight, odds are that stubborn fat will gradually go away. High-intensity aerobic exercise did seem to help in one study. I have had patients undergo liposuction, but that helps your appearance, not your overall health. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

“Amusement is the happiness of those who cannot think...” ~ Alexander Pope

New This Week Fiction The Cast by Danielle Steel Forgotten Road by Richard Paul Evans Audio CD Obesogen Effect by Bruce Blumberg Organize Your Team Today by Jason Selk DVD Little Women Red Sparrow Patron’s Choice Map of Salt and Stars by Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar

Although Pope was an English poet who lived during the early 1700s, his thought about amusement is extremely pertinent today, almost three centuries later. In fact, it may well be one of the eternal truths of all times. It is only natural that we like to be amused from time to time, particularly after hard work has earned us a little relief. However, there are too many people for whom being amused is a way of life. If these people would give themselves a chance to think, they might find a far greater satisfaction. We can provide a dignified and comforting funeral service at a price within the means of any family. The decision on price is always made by the family we serve.

Appointment companions are a smart move Visits to a physician are just one step people make in an effort to improve their well-being. While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment. Listen - People tend to forget at least half of what they hear in the doctor’s office, says the Archives of Internal Medicine. This tendency may be increased when patients are nervous about the potential outcome of their visits. Bringing a companion along means that both people are actively listening. Together, the information they’ve heard can combine to provide a full account of the visit. Taking notes - Companions can jot down important notes about the appointment, such as dates and times for follow-up visits, medication advice and any other instructions that may be forgotten once the patient leaves the office. Companions can later translate the jargon-heavy language of a physician

into an understandable language the patient can fully understand. Medical history - Sometimes a companion can be a useful resource, calling a doctor’s attention to a patient’s prior hospitalizations and illnesses. Companions can even call attention to any medications the patient is currently taking. Serving as an advocate - Very often a companion can operate as a patient advocate, clarifying questions or getting further information out of a doctor if the patient is hesitant to ask. If the information isn’t clear, the companion can raise red flags or ask to have the instructions put in a different light. Translation - Sometimes patients need companions who speak their native languages when their physicians do not. People are learning that bringing a family member or friend along to doctors’ appointments can be a smart way to make the most of doctor/patient interactions.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your creative side is enhanced by indulging yourself in as much artistic inspiration (music, art, dance, etc.) as you can fit into your schedule. Bring someone special along. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Take a little restorative time out of your busy life. Go somewhere quiet this weekend. Or just close the door, turn on the answering machine and pretend you’re away. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your advice might be much in demand by family and friends this week. But reserve time for yourself to investigate a project that could have some unexpected potential. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Workrelated issues demand your attention in the early part of the week. Family matters dominate Thursday and Friday. But the weekend is yours to spend as you please. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Try to keep your temper in check as you deal with someone who seems to enjoy showing disrespect. Losing your Leonine cool might be just what the goader hopes to see. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A heated confrontation needs some cool-off time before it boils over. Better to step away than to try to win an argument where emotions overrule the facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone very special in your life finally sends that reassuring message you’ve been hoping for. You can now devote more time to the tasks you had put aside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Job pressures begin to ease by week’s end, leaving you time to relax and restore your energy levels before you face next week’s emerging challenges. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your spiritual strength helps calm a friend who might be facing an unsettling change in their life. An offer to help comes from a surprising source. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) By midweek you could learn some surprising facts about an associate that might cause you to reconsider a long-held view about someone in your past. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) One of those rare-for-you darker moods sets in in the early part of the week. But by Thursday, the clouds lift and you’re back doing nice things for people in need. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use that sharp Piscean perceptiveness to reel in more information about a promising offer so that you have the facts to back up whatever decision you make. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you prefer the status quo, you easily can adapt to change when it’s called for. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

GVPS ONLINE POLL: Televangelist Jesse Duplantis, whose ministry already owns 3 jets, recently posted a video saying he had divine conversation in which Jesus asked for a $54 million private jet. Duplantis urged followers to help him fulfill the request, reassuring them that the goal wasn’t to raise money to fund the purchase, but to have followers join him in “believing” in God for it to happen. How do you feel about Duplantis’ campaign to raise the money needed to purchase the jet?

• There is no need for a luxurious jet, he needs to lead a more humble life! • People have the right to follow their beliefs even if it means supporting this plan. • It is not my place to judge, he answers to a higher power! Poll Ends: 06/12/18

Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com Poll Results: 06/05/18 What is your opinion of the playing of the National Anthem at high school sporting events?

• It should be played at every game of every event. This instills respect for the flag in our youth. – 83.3% • It really doesn’t matter, no one pays attention! – 16.7% • Only play it at the beginning, this will speed things up! – 0%

It not only delivered a compelling message, it also helped heighten the awareness of making positive decisions by our students. Their participation played a key role in the smooth facilitation of the event and was very much appreciated. Thank you to many people who came to my assistance after a car accident. I realize that most all of us pay a lot of taxes and it is a big problem in our life. This is what I don't know is how can a person or persons receive welfare or any kind of public aid and still own property like land?? When it’s time to pay property taxes who do you think pay their property taxes?? Maybe the state should take a closer look on who they give money or food

I urge residents of [local town] to vote against the proposed Community Center on June 19th. We do not need a new library. The present one is quite new and expansive. We do not need a new Community Center and Recreation Department. Local High Schools and the local college have year round programs for families. There is a new YMCA. TAXES are high enough now!

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

Based on an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey conducted by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, a typical business would save $11,000 per person per year if it allowed its employees to work from home just half the time. Those cost-savings can be traced to numerous factors, and lower utility costs in the office as well as the need for less office space are among them.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Focus on a career path. Prospective employers prefer that applicants have some certainty regarding the types of jobs they are looking for. Take a career assessment test or work with a career counselor to narrow down the fields and positions that speak to you. Avoid the “I’m willing to do or learn anything” approach to job applications. Employers may see that as desperation.

This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website.
