AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS
Finding t he right f am ily car
Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls. It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced.
Use : Family cars are rarely limited to getting mom or dad to and from w ork and for trips to the grocery store. Today’s kids are more active than ever before, and chances are their schedules are as packed as their parents’. Consider the many chauffeuring trips you w ill have to make in the years to come, and choose a car that is equipped to handle those trips. Parents w ho double as soccer coaches may benefit from buying minivans that can easily store all that sports equipment, w hile those w hose children participate in activities that take them far and w ide may w ant a car that’s especially fuel efficient.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi friends! My name is
Fitzgerald, Fitzy for short. I’m only 7 months old and have had a rough start to this thing called life. I’m paralyzed in my back legs. Don’t be sad for me, it doesn’t stop me from doing anything besides running! My new mom is saving up for something called a wheelchair. My mom says I’m gonna have the best of everything in life. I don’t really know what that means, but I hope it involves treats!

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Hearing Loss Indeed Possible After Surgery --DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had a hip replacement. I am 84, with hearing loss. My family says my hearing is worse after the operation. My daughter talked with several seniors who experienced the same thing. They think it has to do with the anesthesia. Fact or fiction? -- D.W. ANSWER: Possibly fact. Hearing loss is a known and rare occurrence after surgery, and there are several ways in which it can happen. You mentioned anesthesia: Several anesthetic agents, especially nitrous oxide, can cause temporary hearing loss, but nitrous oxide is not used as often during surgery as it once was. Changes in the fluid pressure in the ear also can cause both temporary and permanent hearing loss. Finally, antibiotics given around the time of an operation can cause hearing loss. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently attended a free introductory visit at my local health spa. It’s an interesting process. There is a circuit with 12 machines and 12 mats for doing cardio. Each exercise is done for 30 seconds, then you move to the next station. The circuit is supposed to be done twice at each session, three times per week. Can this really work to help you lose weight and get fit? Need I say again, 30 seconds ... really? Your opinion please. -- E.Y.M. ANSWER: There are two questions, and the first is on fitness. There, the answer is a resounding yes. High-intensity interval training has been clearly proven to improve muscle and cardiovascular fitness. If you were to follow the program at the gym, working hard but not overdoing it, you certainly would find that your ability to do the exercises would improve, your stamina would increase, and you’d likely feel better and have more energy. A 24-minute workout (24 stations of 30 seconds each, done twice) is enough (and a LOT better than no workout at all). Unfortunately, just doing the exercise will not make you lose much weight. Losing weight comes from better dietary habits, which can help you eat less food and still feel satisfied. The combination of increased exercise and a little less food, especially less low-quality (“junk”) food, may help you lose a few pounds. Losing weight shouldn’t be the goal, in my opinion. Losing weight and keeping it off is tough to do, but by exercising regularly and eating well, you can dramatically improve overall health and well-being even without weight loss. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an itchy-ear problem. It even wakes me up at night. I’ve tried Cortizone-10, hydrogen peroxide solution, ear baths and cotton swabs. Nothing seems to work for long. Can you help me? -- G.P. ANSWER: Stop the hydrogen peroxide -- it is very drying and can damage the sensitive skin in the ear. The hydrocortisone should work for many common conditions, but if it hasn’t, then your regular doctor, a dermatologist or ENT doctor should take a look in your ear and see what is going on. Seborrheic dermatitis and eczema are common conditions that can affect the skin in the ear. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy WATCHING WHAT YOU EAT As everyone knows, it is important to minimize consumption of sugary and processed foods in order to avoid tooth decay and unnecessary weight gain. To these ends, many people adhere to diets that impose portion control, calorie counting, keeping food journals, and other means of tracking food consumption. Unfortunately, these methods are often misleading since faulty memory, inaccurate measurements, and simple errors make tracking diets a fairly unreliable exercise. In an effort to track dietary data more reliably, scientists have developed a tiny, wireless sensor that can be attached to a tooth that can collect real-time information about a person’s consumption of salt, glucose, and alcohol. This innovation may be a game-changer for collecting data on food intake. Dentists do more than fill cavities, construct crowns, perform root canals, place implants, and make dentures. If you
have questions about your diet and your teeth, or you’re experiencing unusual discomfort, or if you are worried about your child’s developing teeth, the answers to these concerns and others can be found at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We are well-versed and up to date on today’s health care matters at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we offer comprehensive dental services. Please call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. We accept most insurances. P.S. The tooth-mounted food sensor mentioned above is 2 millimeters square and can flexibly conform and bond to tooth surfaces. It may someday be programmed to sound alarms when sugar, salt, or other compounds are detected.

Take Steps to Reduce Conflicts Between Bears and People The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Black bears have been keeping DEC Wildlife staff busy, with numerous human-bear conflicts already this summer. Bears are often attracted to bird feeders, improperly stored garbage, messy grills, and pet food that is left outdoors. When people allow bears to have access to human-related foods, it encourages bear behavior that put people, property and bears at risk. Reducing human-bear conflicts requires changing human behavior. When we reduce attractants for bears, we protect people and property, and we do what’s best for bears too. To Reduce Human-Bear Conflicts: • Take down bird feeders after April 1st. • Store garbage in a bear-resistant garbage can or keep inside until the morning of pick up. • Clean up grease from grills after use. • Feed pets indoors. • Owners of backyard chicken flocks in bear country should also take steps to secure their flock and feed. If You Encounter a Bear: Never Approach, Surround, or Corner a Bear - bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective. Never Run From a Bear - stay calm, speak in a loud and calm voice,␣slowly back away␣and leave the area. Use Noise to Scare Away Bears From Your Campsite yell, clap, or bang pots immediately upon sighting a bear near your campsite. Do Not Throw Your Backpack or Food Bag at an Approaching Bear. • Doing so will only encourage bears to approach and “bully” people to get food. • By teaching a bear to approach humans for food, you are endangering yourself, other campers/ residents, and the bears. In Your Yard: • From a safe distance, make loud noises by shouting or banging pots to scare the bear away. • Once the bear leaves, remove all attractants such as bird seed, garbage, and pet food.
• Ask neighbors to remove attractants. In a Building: • Give the bear a clear escape route. • Leave any doors open as you back away from the bear. • Do not lock the bear in a room. If a Bear Becomes Aggressive and Approaches You: • Raise your arms and speak in a loud, calm voice while backing away. Charges You: • Stand your ground. • If you have bear spray, dispense directly at the bear. Please follow the link leaving the DEC’s website to learn about the proper use of bear spray. Follows You: • Stay together. • Do not run, but continue to back away while speaking loudly. If the Bear Continues to Follow You: • Stand your ground. • Intimidate by making yourself look bigger by waving arms, clapping, shouting, banging sticks. • Prepare to fight or use bear spray. If the Bear Makes Contact With You: • Fight back with anything at hand (knife, stick, rocks, fists). Visit DEC’s website to learn more about how to reduce human-bear conflicts.

When is clumsiness a cause for concern? Who hasn’t tripped over his own feet or knocked over a water glass on a table? No one is immune to the occasional clumsiness, but some people may grow concerned that their bouts of clumsiness are becoming more frequent. For healthy people, bumping into a wall when misjudging a corner or dropping silverware on the floor is often a minor, isolated incident. Lack of concentration or multitasking often may be to blame. In 2007, Professor Charles Swanik and a research team at the University of Delaware studied athletes to discover why some seem to be more injury prone than others. Researchers found that clumsy athletes’ brains seemed to have “slowed processing speed,” which referred to how their brains understand new information and respond to it. But clumsiness also can be a sign of a bigger issue at play, namely motor problems within the brain. According to Taylor Harrison, MD, clinical instructor in the neuromuscular division of Emory University, coordination of the body is complicated and tied to both motor and sensory systems. That means the eyes, brain, nerves,
cerebellum, which specializes in coordination and balance, muscles, and bones must work together. Clumsiness can result from stroke, seizure disorders, brain trauma or the presence of tumors, and other conditions. Healthline also says that clumsiness may be an early symptom of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s. Parkinson’s affects the central nervous system and can impair motor skills. Alzheimer’s slowly damages and kills brain cells and may cause issues with coordination. This may be the case with other dementias as well. Clumsiness may sometimes result from a lack of sleep or overconsumption of alcohol. Arthritis also can lead to clumsiness when joint pain and restrictive movements make it challenging to get around. Psychologists may suggest cognitive behavioral therapy or propose performing tasks with more mindfulness to reduce clumsiness. If that doesn’t work, men and women should visit their physicians, who can conduct tests to rule out certain things and provide peace of mind.

To the misogynist attention seeker who thinks that a woman should take on her husband’s last name when they get married. Why is it any of your business what other couples do? It is their own decision, and for whatever reason, the woman decided to keep or hyphenate her last name. We no longer live in the 19th century where women were property and obligated to take on her husband’s name to show that he owns her. Women are free to do what they want to do, and I am sure they discussed it with
A nice couple ahead of me in line at the grocery store paid for my groceries. We should all be so kind and pay it forward. I want to thank the Livonia Ambulance crew for coming to my rescue June 18th at 5:30 in the morning when I dislocated my hip. Both of you were absolutely wonderful. You made my traumatic experience bearable. You both were so kind and caring. Thank you so much!
their partner as to what their married name will be. I suggest you keep your childish and outdated opinions to yourself and stop butting into business that does not affect you in the least bit. We have spoken to our village neighbor about feeding the deer and squirrels. They have finally stopped feeding deer once I explained it was actually illegal, but they continue to spread peanuts all over their deck. It has now caused a huge problem; the deer and squirrels now destroy our perennial gardens that we have worked so hard for and spent so much time and money on. We have asked nicely to refrain from doing so but we are ignored. We had no trouble with wildlife until they moved in. The squirrels now make a mess of our deck and yard. The deer eat all our plants. Our gardens were started long before they moved in. We are trying to add beauty to our home and the village. We are respectful of our neighbors but we do not receive the same respect.
On July 3rd at a local store in Livonia I had an angel come to my aid when I had a small problem with a sandwich tray opening up on me. (Oh and by the way it was a good sandwich tra, a lot of food for a reasonable price); anyway this lady helped me not only get the tray fixed but carried it to my car. I didn't get your name but your act of kindness made my day. I thank God for his special angels he sends us. God bless you.
In my area there are several people flying the Confederate flag. Researching the Secessionist papers of the states that seceded from the Union all include a statement that one of the reasons for secession was the potential denial of slave ownership in the United States as well as the justification of their position on the matter. The states would no longer have the right to own other human beings. This is the heritage that those who identify with the Confederacy are so proud of. Despite what one wants to believe the Secessionist papers speak for themselves. Find them online and read them in their entirety. The Confederate flag represents the states that fought for the right to own slaves. That is the bottom line and that is what you are supporting. Not a heritage but a horror. Around the anniversary of my husband's passing, I placed a lovely lavender, purple and white hanging basket at his gravesite. Several days later somebody stole
that hanging basket! How cruel can someone be? May that thief live with their conscience. I am disheartened and ashamed of the representation of our town Little League by the coaches and the core values, or lack thereof, they showed in the way they chose players for the All-Star team. I'm not saying this because my child wasn't picked, if you're good you're good, if you're not you're not, but that wasn't the case here. Kids who play well but have appalling sportsmanship (ie. screaming at the coaches, slamming their equipment, not shaking other player’s hands) were chosen over kids who play well AND have great attitudes, kids who are true AllStars. FYI, they're not fooling anyone, everyone knows the system is rigged through jealous fathers living vicariously through their sons, serving themselves, not the players. Looking forward to the years when they're in the stands!

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

ESTATE OF BOB MILLER EQUIPMENT AUCTION H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your zeal for challenges usually works well for you. But this week it’s best to avoid jumping into new situations without more information. Vital news emerges by the weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once again, the Bovine’s patience pays off as that pesky problem works itself out without taking too much of your valuable time. A new task opens interesting possibilities. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those suggestions you want to share need to be set aside for a while so you can focus on the job at hand. There’ll be time later to put your ideas into a workable format. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be sure about your sources before you use the information in any decision you reach about your new project. Some of the data might be out of date or misinterpreted. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A sudden challenge might rattle you at first. But pump up that strong Lion’s heart with a full measure of courage, and face it with the continuing support of family and friends. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Watch your expenses this week so you can have a financial cushion to fall back on should things tighten up later this month. Money matters ease by the 1st. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Uncertainty over workplace policy creates anxiety and confusion among your colleagues. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked, once again, to help work things out. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The workweek keeps you busy tying up loose ends and checking data that needs to be verified. The weekend offers a chance to relax and restore your spent energies. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is not the best time to go to extremes to prove a point. Better to set a sensible goal now and move forward. There’ll be time later to take the bolder course. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A step-by-step progression is the better way to move ahead. Taking shortcuts could be risky at this time. Important news arrives on the 1st. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Avoid getting drawn into workplace disputes that should be handled by those directly involved. Instead, spend your energy developing those new ideas. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You still need to be prudent about money matters. But things start to ease by the end of the week. A weekend encounter with an old friend brings welcome news. BORN THIS WEEK: You handle challenging situations with boldness when necessary and caution when called for. Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

HOW TO KEEP GRILLED FOODS WARM Create a tin foil tent and place foods inside. The tent can then be placed on a less hot area of the grill or placed into an oven that’s not on. Avoid tenting foods that are meant to have crispy skins, as tenting can moisten the skin.

In our interpersonal relationships, how often we suddenly wake up to a situation that should have been obvious from the beginning. In some cases, we may not want to face up to an unpleasant fact so we ignore it and pretend to search for other solutions. For some reason, the more obvious a thing or an idea may be, the easier it avoids detection. The lesson here is that, when we must find an answer, we should check out the obvious first, rather than come to it as a last resort. Over the years, we have served a great number of families in this community. Most of them came to us on the recommendation of other families who appreciated our thoughtful consideration.

Backyard Maintenance Tips For Summer (NAPS)—Summer is here and it’s time for backyard barbecues! Before your guests arrive, check these four backyard maintenance tasks off your to-do list to ensure your yard is looking good. Clean Your Barbecue To prevent food from sticking to your barbecue grills, rub cooking oil on the grates before you start. After you’re done barbecuing, use warm, soapy water to clean the grates with a wire brush. Give Outdoor Furniture a Pick-Me-Up With all furniture, check for wear and tear that may have occurred during winter. Clean plastic furniture and chair or couch cushions simply with a cloth or soft scrub brush dipped in a mix of water and dish detergent. Some outdoor cushions can be thrown in the washer so check the tags. Check Power Equipment Since power equipment most likely hasn’t been used in months, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. Some equipment may need to be lubricated to run smoothly again. Easily lubricate the moving parts of a lawn mower with WD-40 EZ-REACHTM. It has an 8-inch, flexible straw that bends and keeps its shape to get WD-40® Multi-Use Product into hard-to-reach places, like in and around the blade. Tidy Up Your Lawn Trim large plants, hedges and bushes that had a growth spurt during the spring, and remove dead limbs from trees. Remove leaves and other debris from the gutters around your home, and remove weeds from the lawn and garden. You may need to reseed some areas of your lawn as well. With the completion of these four tasks, guests will be enjoying your backyard barbecues all summer long. To see how WD-40 EZ-REACH can help you tackle other outdoor maintenance projects, visit WD40.com.

Allow employees to telecommute. Based on an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey conducted by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, a typical business would save $11,000 per person per year if it allowed its employees to work from home just half the time. Those cost-savings can be traced to numerous factors, and lower utility costs in the office as well as the need for less office space are among them.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than résumés without such links.
