HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

How to clean your grill during summer party season Turn the grill off. Unless you own a charcoal grill, chances are your grill has dials that govern how hot the grill gets when cooking. Make sure these dials are turned to the off position before you start cleaning. If your’s is a gas grill, disconnect the gas while wearing gloves to reduce your risk of accident or injury. Use the residual heat to make cleaning easier. The sooner you start cleaning the grill after you cook, the easier it might be to make the cooking surfaces sparkle. That’s because the residual heat can make it easier to remove any leftover buildup from barbecue sauce or seasoning that stuck to the grill after you removed your food. Use a wire brush to clean the cooking grates. Wire brushes are ideal for cleaning cooking grates. Such brushes can quickly remove grease and food particles, saving grill owners the trouble of scrubbing away with traditional sponges. Once the wire brush’s work is done, you can then clean the grill with a soapy sponge. Remove food that fell into the well. Food inevitably falls into the well of a grill no matter how skilled a grillmaster might be. If left to fester in the well, such foods can pose a safety risk and promote the growth of bacteria. Clean the remaining areas of the grill. Marinade, sauce or condiments may find their way onto areas of your grill, and if left unattended, such substances can make a grill very dirty over time. Remove these substances after each barbecue to keep your grill looking new through the summer.

• Bald-faced hornet: Hornets tend to be an aggressive species that can sting repeatedly. Should you find a nest near an entertaining space or garden, it can cause trouble. • Carpenter ants: These ants will burrow into wood causing damage. They may compromise any wooden structure in and around a home. • Locusts: Various species of locust can damage plants and crops due to their voracious appetites. • Treehoppers: These small, green insects mimic the look of leaves, and their appetites can affect crops and gardens. • Red pavement ant: As they feed on all manner of human food, these ants can quickly overtake areas with their staggering numbers and deliver painful bites. • Grasshoppers: Certain grasshoppers, like the redlegged grasshopper, can decimate food crops and transfer parasites to birds when eaten as prey.
Celebrating 25 Years in Business!
• Caterpillars: Many caterpillars, the precursor to adult moths, will feed constantly on leaves, stems and other parts of plants. The tobacco hornworm moth caterpillar can damage potato and tomato plants.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With new facts to work with, you should feel more confident in moving ahead. But continue to do so at an unhurried pace so you can spot details you might otherwise miss. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Taking on that new workplace project could be one of your smarter career moves. Expect a surprising show of support from someone who had always been a critic. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might feel you’re too busy to undertake a new responsibility. But check it out before making any decisions. What you learn could persuade you to change your mind. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You feel quite content enjoying all the comforts of home right now. But the urge to travel grows stronger, and by week’s end, you could begin packing your bags. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A hectic period begins to ease up, but that doesn’t mean the Fine Feline can do much catnapping these days. You need to finish those old tasks and prepare for new ones. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expect to get some good news about your financial situation by week’s end. But it could still be too early to rush out with a long shopping list of things to buy. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your management skills make an impression on some workplace VIPs who might be looking for someone like you to take on an upcoming project. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Meeting a former adversary might be unsettling at first. But time has softened hard feelings, and you could be on the brink of starting a new relationship. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A troubling situation close to home might cause you to change your travel plans. But getting all the facts before you act might cause you to reconsider. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might be quite alone right now in deciding to support a major workplace shift. But others will join you as new information supports your bold move. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A former co-worker returns with news that could persuade you to reassess recently made plans. Be sure to consult with a trusted colleague before you act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your motives behind a recent decision could be called into question by a rival. But once you present the facts, all doubts will be resolved. Enjoy an artsrich weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: While you love being the center of attention, your generous heart allows you to share the attention with others. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes. * Get started by collecting prizes. The prizes can be purchased by the organization hosting the auction, but organizers can also solicit donations from local businesses and individuals. Prizes can range from photography packages with a local photographer to gift certificates to area restaurants to vouchers for trips to zoos or other family-friendly activities. Prizes also can be categorized by value. For example, grand prizes may include vacations or furniture. Categories can be determined once all the gifts have been purchased.

Avoid aches and pains when gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. • Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. • Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. • Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the
stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. • Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy LONG-TERM SATISFACTION WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS As we live longer, older adults have every expectation of preserving their chewing ability and oral health. In cases where tooth replacement is necessary, dental implants have emerged as the most natural-looking and best functioning option. To best gauge how dental-implant patients feel about their dental restorations, a questionnaire was sent to 587 patients, eight to fourteen years after their procedures. Of the 400 individuals who responded, a great majority (81 percent) indicated that they experienced high chewing comfort. The mean time elapsed since implant installation was 10 years. Fully 94 percent of those answering the survey said that they were satisfied or sufficiently satisfied with the aesthetic aspects of their implant restorations.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: A column in a popular consumer magazine states that taking a baby aspirin daily does more harm than good, and it should not be taken unless you have heart disease. I have been taking a baby aspirin daily for 10 years, and now I’m concerned. Your thoughts, please. -- G.D. ANSWER: Experts disagree on the best advice. Some points, however, are not controversial: Aspirin is beneficial for reducing future heart risks in people with established heart disease, but it increases the risk of bleeding events. Some of these are minor, but a few are potentially life-threatening. According to a recent review of published studies, in people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease, a daily aspirin reduces the risk of a nonfatal heart attack by about 20 percent, without significantly changing stroke risk or risk of dying from heart disease. Risk of bleeding is increased by 50 percent. Also, newer evidence suggests that aspirin may decrease the risk of some cancers, especially colon cancer. Aspirin is more likely to have a net benefit in people with higher risk of heart disease, even if it isn’t diagnosed. The decision of taking aspirin should be made after a thorough review of all your individual risk factors, including heart disease risk and history of bleeding, and possibly colon cancer risk. When I discuss aspirin with patients, I very seldom recommend it to anyone with no known coronary disease who has had a significant side effect (such as bleeding) with aspirin in the past. As more studies are failing to show benefit, these recommendations may change. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ailments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? -- V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to secondhand smoke or other airborne pollutants. Quitting smoking is by far the most important action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes. Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems. The booklet on COPD explains in detail both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 601W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

Family size : The size and potential size of the family also must be considered before buying a new car. Kids grow up and get bigger, and parents w ho w ant to have more children dow n the road should consider just how big they w ant their family to be before buying a new car. Look for a car that not only suits your family now, but one that w ill cater to your family’s needs dow n the road as w ell. Overlooking this important factor now may force you to replace the car you ultimately buy sooner than you had hoped.
When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hotweather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.

Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

REASONS TO CLEAN YOUR CAR (NAPSI)—If any of the more than 260 million cars in America is yours, here’s important advice: Keep it clean. First, dirt can damage the paint, erode the protective finish and lead to rust. Second, a clean car improves gas mileage. Dirt causes drag. Third, it’s not safe to drive with dirt, bugs and debris covering the windows, especially at night. Fourth, you increase your car’s trade-in value. Fifth, a clean car just seems to run better. Fortunately, it’s easy to avoid these problems. A U.S.-based company makes car-cleaning pads that work with just car wash soap and water to remove bugs, dirt, grime, minor road tar, bird droppings and so on. There’s no need for separate bug removers, glass cleaners, sponges, tar removers, clay bars and the like and there are no chemicals or detergents in the reusable pads. These Bugs Off Pads are environmentally friendly as well as safe for paint, clear coat, plastic, glass, graphics and metals. The company even offers a money-back guarantee. Once your car is clean, consider the wheels. Reusable, durable Better Than A Brush Wheel Scrubbers also work with only soap and water. The pads and scrubbers are available at select car dealerships as well as at www.bugsoffpads.com.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.
Thank You

SEEING IS BELIEVING WHEN IT COMES TO ROAD SAFETY
“Hometowns seem to be loved most by the people who used to live in them....” ~ William D. Tammeus
Maybe absence does make the heart grow fonder. We constantly hear celebrities of all kinds referring to their idyllic early years in their hometown. To hear them, one has to wonder why anyone would ever leave such a friendly, fun-filled place. Whatever hometown we come from, of whatever size, we tend to think our future lies elsewhere, in greener pastures beyond a distant fence. Only later do we realize that it wasn’t too bad at home and our affection for the place of our youth increases as the years go by. We believe that a funeral service should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved to make a satisfactory adjustment to their loss.

(NAPSI)—Although properly functioning vehicle lights, wipers and mirrors allow for better visibility while driving, these items are all too often forgotten or ignored when people perform basic auto care, says the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making sure that you can see and be seen on the road is essential to avoiding motor vehicle accidents, yet many motorists overlook simple maintenance steps that can improve driving visibility,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Following a few auto care visibility tips can be illuminating, helping to ensure the safety of you, your passengers and other vehicles around you. • Replace any exterior or interior lights that are dimming, rapidly blinking or nonfunctioning and be sure headlights are correctly aimed. • Make sure that vehicle mirrors are clean and properly positioned. • Check windshield washer fluid level and, when it gets low, replace it. • Replace wiper blades if they show cracking or if they chatter or streak when operating. Don’t forget to check the rear wiper blade. • When in doubt, turn your lights on to help you see and help other drivers see you. Some places even have laws that require headlights to be on when windshield wipers are operating. • Don’t overdrive your headlights. Maintain a speed that will let you stop within the illuminated area; otherwise, you create a blind crash zone in front of your vehicle. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a free copy of the popular “Car Care Guide,” visit the council’s consumer education website at www.carcare.org.

Early Tuesday evening, I pulled my car into GearHeadz Auto Repair on Rt. 15 in Avon. My car had been acting very strangely, and the battery light was on. Michael Rubert asked me to pull my car to an open bay door. My car refused to start again. I had just finished my second day of work at a new job, and my two children were still at daycare, waiting for me. Mike didn't hesitate. He offered me his van, complete with the necessary car seats, to pick up my children. Then, even though his business hours had ended before I even walked in the door, he offered to repair my vehicle that night, the next morning at the latest. He drove to an auto parts store several
The condition of the old family cemeteries in the [local town] are a disgrace to the early settlers and their families who made the town what it is today. The pioneer cemetery across the street from my house has been mowed but only twice this year, and the second time they mowed they didn't even trim around the headstones. Another of the
towns away just to get the necessary part for my vehicle more quickly. When an issue arose, he was still there when I called, thinking I would leave a message, at 10:30 at night! Mike's kindness and his willingness to go above and beyond have earned both my gratitude and my future business. Thank you, GearHeadz! We'd like to thank everyone who supported the 26th annual St. Agnes School Golf Classic in Memory of Michael B. Hayes. This is a great celebration of our wonderful St. Agnes School and Genesee Valley community and a fond remembrance of our dear friend and brother Michael, and
we thank the players, guests, volunteers, the local businesses and patrons and the staff at Livingston Country Club and the Oaks for making our tournament a success! In today's day and age, we know your time and money is asked for a lot, and we want everyone know we sincerely appreciate your support. Thank you! Just wanted to say I appreciate people who pick up after their doggies and throw their baggies into any outdoor trash receptacles or toss them at home. You are doing a great job helping keep your area clean.
cemeteries had a large tree fall last year. All that was done was cut up the tree and leave it where it lays to this day. A few years ago, a lot of time and effort was put into fixing, straightening, and cleaning the stones in these cemeteries and cleaning the cemeteries in general. The surrounding towns do an excellent job of maintaining their cemeteries, why can't our town do the same? The [local town] deserves better.
delightful cheery flowers were mowed clear cut to the ground at their peak. Why? It doesn’t make any sense! They weren’t trees that we have been told must be taken down to “secure the banks of the canal” These were delicate plants that brought much joy and delight to the walkers and bikers on the Path. Not to mention the good they do in attracting bees. NYS Canal Authorities, please leave the wildflowers alone! Keep the mowers in the shop!
My husband and I walk the Canal Path in our Village every day. Lately, we have been in awe of the beauty and rich display of wildflowers of every color, size, scent and type. Absolutely gorgeous! “Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as these.” A splendid display! Then the State came through. These
Those little rascals sure can push buttons. But the thing is that if you've got buttons then they're bound to get pushed. Why get angry? They're the children; we're the adults, aren't we? Let’s try harder to NOT let others decide the kind of people we're going to be, especially when the other people are children.
A huge thank you to those who helped me retrieve my dog who escaped from his harness while on a walk in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood on July 7. I didn’t get your names—a family in a van and a man in a white SUV—I’m so grateful for all of your help. Thank you so much!
Once again, venturing thru [local town] risks our personal safety because some people don't follow right-of-way traffic regulations - the Monument at the center of town is a TRAFFIC CIRCLE & ALL FOUR routes entering said traffic circle are governed by YIELD signs, giving vehicles already proceeding within the clearly painted lane of the traffic circle the RIGHT-OFWAY... more than one vehicle can travel within the circle at the same time as long as a vehicle entering the circle DOES NOT infringe on the forward progress of any vehicle already within the traffic circle (a.k.a.; Right-of-Way) - The YIELD signs are large, bright, and clearly posted - if you don't understand traffic regulations: ask our local LEO to explain how it works before your severely injure yourself and/or others!! TNX!

Oatka Fest – July 14th, 2018 By Amanda Dudek Even from a distance, the pitched, white tents and the luscious scents wafting along warm summer breezes suggested one thing: this place has good food. The twin rows of tents lining the LeRoy Junior/Senior High School grounds boasts many delicious options, including kettle corn, cotton candy, pulled pork, snow cones, hot dogs, pulled pork, candy apples, beef on wick, Italian sausage, even Mooney’s Bar & Grill’s outstanding mac n’ cheese. The Oatka Festival primary spans two streets: East Main Street and Church Street, which also flank the school in the Town of Le Roy. On the corner of Church and East Main, one can’t help noticing a stand with signs encouraging passersby to sign up for the unique, and hilarious, Duck Derby, an event in which dozens or even hundreds, of numbered rubber ducks are hosed from one side of Oatka Creek to the other. Cash prizes are awarded for the first ten ducks and the last duck retrieved from the water. This sign-up location, perched atop a hill, overlooks the banks of Oatka Creek where the Duck Derby will be held and where the Regatta has already gotten underway.

Back amidst the food tents, Fowler’s Lemonade stands out with its fresh strawberry, raspberry and regular flavors. Made fresh, they were all succulent with berry and pulp and ice and sugar. A local restaurant, Mooney’s Bar & Grill is also representing its hometown of LeRoy with customer favorites such as lobster mac n’ cheese and cheeseburger mac n’ cheese. More traditional fare, such as hot dogs and hamburgers, are also available from the Rotary. Underneath the Rotary tent, the School Superintendent Merritt Holly is pitching in
behind a grill. He very obligingly posed with fellow Rotary volunteers for a picture, an example of the community spirit that abounds here. On the adjoining side of the school grounds, the Oatka Festival follows through on its promise to have several fun and free activities for children. Pony rides, an inflatable obstacle course, a National Guard football toss, a 9 hole mini golf, a mini-ark petting zoo and a rock wall are all open and free to children of all ages. Finally and worth noting, the Jell-O Museum and the LeRoy House were both offering free tours during the festival. Although there were several other events offered which we did not experience, both earlier on Saturday and also on Sunday, my family, friends and I had a very enjoyable afternoon at the Oatka Festival and look forward to going again next year. BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

Donna! I am a 6-month-old old English Sheepdog. I have a 10 year old Basset Hound sister who doesn’t love to play with me, but I know she loves me. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
