Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi, my name is Skitz. I am a 14-month-old Ginger and Mommy and Daddy rescued my brother and me when we were babies in Florida. They call me Skitz because I run all over the house chasing my big brother. We moved here in August and I love eating snow. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Live comfortably on less Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren’t in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a longstanding trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to reenter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one’s late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that. • Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of home-related expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housing-related expenses. • Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals’ finances. That’s why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to long-term care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years.

• Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive. A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out. • Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but empty-nesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly one-third of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions. Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy GOING HOLLYWOOD! If you’ve ever wondered why so many actors, models, celebs, and media personalities all seem to have such perfect teeth, you should familiarize yourself with “dental veneers.” Also referred to as “Hollywood teeth” dental veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials (porcelain or resin) that are designed to cover the front surface of teeth. After removing about a half-millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, the dentist bonds these thin shells to the front of the teeth, effectively changing their color, shape, size, and/or length. Dental veneers are available to anyone looking to improve the aesthetics of his or her smile. They are also routinely used to fix chipped, broken, worn, irregularly shaped, misaligned, and uneven teeth. It’s simple, really. When you look good, you feel good. If your smile is not

becoming to you, you should be coming to us for dentistry tailored specifically to your needs. Aren’t you curious how today’s cosmetic dentistry procedures can virtually change your life? We’d be glad to tell you about the many ways we can help make your smile a dazzling one. Just call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. Our family dental practice at 6 Batavia City Centre is geared to your complete oral health and to long-term patient satisfaction. P.S. Dental veneers are sometimes used as an alternative to orthodontic treatment when patients want to fill the gaps between front teeth that otherwise detract from their smiles.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: My 23-year-old son is a bodybuilder, and much to my dismay, he takes steroids. I know he takes testosterone, and I don’t know what else. How will this affect him? -- Anon. ANSWER: Testosterone has many bad long-term effects, and he really should stop it. As a resident, I took care of a seemingly very healthy, very muscular 30-year-old man with terrible heart failure due to a heart attack. Many similar reports have led to suspicion that steroids taken for bodybuilding increase risk of heart attack and even sudden death. There appear to be many other long-term effects, including neuropsychiatric effects of anger and aggressive behavior. They also may reduce sperm count and affect fertility. I don’t know what else he may be taking, but I would strongly urge him to evaluate all supplements carefully. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a healthy female until I had an injury to my back. I experience pain and tingling in my right side, going down the back of my right leg. Sitting is especially painful, as is standing in one place for too long. Now the pain has started in my left side also. I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, physical therapy, epidural shots and pain pills. I also had two laminectomies (decompression surgery on the spinal canal) on L4/L5 last year, with no relief from the pain. Upon seeing another neurosurgeon, I have been told that I have some large Tarlov cysts (1 cm). There does not seem to be a great amount of information about these on the internet, plus I am not sure what information out there is accurate. One doctor on the internet is all about having surgery on them. The neurosurgeon I am seeing does not want to do surgery just yet. He says that surgery does not always bring about pain relief. Can you share some information about these Tarlov cysts and what can be done for the continued back and leg pain? Dealing with this for several years has caused me much emotional distress and depression. -- F.H. ANSWER: Tarlov cysts, also called perineurial cysts, occur along the lining of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In one study, in 500 people with MRI scans, 23 had Tarlov cysts, but only five had any symptoms from them. In this study, the cysts were drained by a needle, which relieved the pain, although the pain usually came back as the cysts refilled with fluid. I agree with your neurosurgeon that surgery on these does not guarantee success. Since you have had two surgeries and multiple types of therapies that haven’t worked, I can understand your frustration. It might be worth talking to the neurosurgeon about a trial of draining the cysts to see if that helps the symptoms. The booklet on back problems gives an overview of the causes and treatments for the most-common back maladies. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty might upset some people, but you inevitably win more admirers for having the courage to tell the truth when others are more likely to scramble for cover. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A trusted colleague sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A welcome piece of good news helps clear the air in a family situation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new opportunity sounds promising. But watch out for any conditions that might be attached. Before making a decision, ask that each one be explained in detail. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be distracted by promises of good times, yet you ultimately reach the goals you set for yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. CROSSWORD

The Family of D

onna M . B rew

wishes to thank all those who cared for her during her extended illness, as well as those who supported our family at the time of her passing. The outpouring of compassion and expressions of love help to ease our loss. We knew her as an amazingly devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and her passing leaves us hollow. Yet to see how loved she was by her extended family, care providers and so many friends who have reached out to us, helps to lift our spirits and will forever live in our hearts. To those who donated to her charities in lieu of flowers and gave Mass cards in her memory, your thoughtfulness and generosity is greatly appreciated. We want to say a special thank you to the following: Alhart Funeral Home, especially Jeff Deragon, Chase Florist, The LeRoy Country Club, The LeRoy Village Green staff, especially those on C-wing, St. Martin DePorres Parish, St. Columba Church and Father John Hayes, Michelle Carson, Jean Dudak. With our deepest gratitude, The Family of Donna M. Brew

“Absence extinguishes small passions and increases grest ones, as the wind will blow out a candle and blow in a fire…” ~ La Rochefoucauld

This observation by the great French writer and moralist of the early 17th century, explains the apparent contradiction of the two old adages…”Out of sight, out of mind” and “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” If an attraction is but a passing fancy, it may very well be eliminated by a period of separation. But, if two people enjoy a great mutual love, an absence…even of prolonged duration…will only increase their devotion to one another. Thoughtful people may wish to make all arrangements for their own funeral services, well in advance of need. Financial aspects can also be pre-arranged. Out staff will discuss this with you, in your home if you prefer. Phone us, no obligation.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES Venture off campus. Towns that rely heavily on colleges or universities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local businesses, including bars, restaurants and entertainment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Students can take advantage of these offerings to save on food and entertainment, which tend to be among the more pricey cost-of-living expenses college students contend with.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

Big Springs Museum Serves Up Smorgasbord of Historic Everyday Life: Part II A wide variety of displays are arranged on this floor, many of them in glass cases donated by Sibley’s, a prestigious department store formerly of Rochester, New York. Collections include buttons, irons, textiles, clothing, both men’s and women’s, gorgeous hat pins, several washing machines, medical history items including a fantastic early Xray machine. War artifacts and household items are also among the several collections displayed on this floor. However, one of the most remarkable displays is an extensive collection of photographs and transcribed reflections from the area’s African American community, largely established by 28 original families that came north not ten years after the end of the Civil War. The collection is arranged in collections by family and displayed in posterstyle, clear frames attached along the wall, which can be turned like the pages of an enormous book. Here, family generations and local African American history unfolds. This one-of-a-kind collection was recognized in the news for its uniqueness and significance.␣ Moving downstairs two flights, one is brought face-to-face with a portrait of Mrs. Nancy Sheffer and other prominent historical figures. Since Caledonia was originally founded by Scottish immigrants from Perthshire in 1798, there is also a collection of photos of Scottish founders and family members along with a map of Scotland representing the areas from which such families typically originated. Continuing into the museum basement, one emerges into agricultural history, including a wide variety of farm implements. Models of farm equipment as well as some full-sized equipment, such as planters and plows, are displayed. Across the center of the main room hangs several window panes containing photos of the people and properties of days gone by. These “windows to the past” contain the names of the people they picture, and local visiting families should not be too surprised to find their own family name somewhere on the display. There were so many additional collections at this expansive museum that truly hours could be spent here learning about and exploring the past. There is also an extensive genealogical collection of documents that fill an␣entire room. Currently, the museum is only open on Sundays and Mondays and has only about a dozen volunteers. There is so much material still to be sorted and displayed. Volunteers

are always welcome as assistance with sorting, arranging, cataloguing and the like is always needed. All items have been gifted to the museum from local families and many more items are still being loaned and gifted to the museum today. The museum also hosts fun, family-friendly fundraisers, such as its recent Scavenger Hunt, in which over 21 teams competed, and its upcoming Mystery Dinner Theatre production: “Dinner at Eight; Dead by Nine,” which will feature performances by local talents. For a fascinating view of historic daily life, you cannot miss this local treasure. For more information on the Big Springs Museum or to volunteer, please visit the museum website at www.bigspringsmuseum.org or call (585) 538-9880 during museum hours. The Big Springs Museum is open on Sundays 1pm-4pm, Mondays 9am-12pm and by appointment. To see more photos from the Big Springs Museum, please visit our website at␣http:// www.gvpennysaver.com/. Have you paid attention to the amazingly beautiful flowers down Main St. in Canandaigua? The garden carts in Bloomfield? Thank you to the workers/volunteers who have kept all the flowers watered and cared for this summer. You are appreciated! As a Chaplain volunteer in the Continuing Care at Thompson Hospital, I am truly blessed to visit the elderly in the Dementia/Alzheimer’s wing. It is SO important that the elderly people have visitations. Even if their minds are gone or going they still like and need to see family or friends, children, pets, a

bouquet of flowers, Etc. Most residents have had to give up their independence, their car, their home, and perhaps even their spouse. Please take the time, take your children or grandchildren to visit the elderly and show them love and that someone cares. Talk to them about their professions, and their lives. There is a great “wealth” about the elderly and the lives they have lived. It will not only bless your day, it will bless their days. We would like to thank Seth Graham of Seth Graham Design at 3105 Main St., Caledonia, for creating such a beautiful Memorial video of

me which made me slam my brakes and lean on the horn. You looked at me as if you did nothing wrong!! You may have a death wish but I sure as heck don't!!!! This intersection is bad enough without inconsiderate idiots like you making it worse!!!! Next time, continue your left turn and proceed to the street on the right, approx. two car lengths away and turn around in someone's driveway or in the driveway on the left which is the same distance. Remember, you are not the only person on the road AND LOOK before you turn!!! I returned home from work only to find my neighbor behind me on this dead end street had company. How did I

our mother/wife/MeMe Donna Brew. Seth's compassion and ideas were truly heartfelt and appreciated. He's absolutely a talented young man. Thanks again, Seth, for keeping our memories alive through this beautiful video!

Thank you Kelly for volunteering your time to put up the new letters on the Opera Block building. Your dedication to making the Avon community look beautiful is greatly appreciated by everyone living in or visiting our Town.

know? The cars parked partially on my lawn were a dead giveaway. I pulled up and asked the lady with the baby, can you not park on my lawn? Well now my neighbor claims they have to move, because they have neighbor problems. Problems like, the dog barking, putting your overflowing tote to the road on Friday for Tuesday pick up so it leaves a mess all over? Problems like not mowing by your tree out front that still has Christmas lights on it? Problems like the cat spraying the garage and taking a dump in the flower bed? Yes that is a neighbor problem. Do you need boxes for your move or a good Realtor? Let me know! I would love to help you out so I don't have a neighbor problem.

Thank you Crosby’s Gas & Mini Market -Caledonia! And thank you to the person who found my billfold insert and the employee who returned the insert to me by mail. It was appreciated very much!!!!

How can you be so shameful? For the past 3 weeks in our quiet town you have stolen things off of porches, have tried breaking into homes of elders and broke windows. In our yard, your picture is being taken and we have security alarms. What is wrong with people like you? We have reported this to all the authorities! You know who you are, so stop and get a job instead of depending on us! If you get caught, you may not like the outcome and you may get a new home!

GAS GRILL SAFETY TIPS

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

Inspect hoses at the start of each grilling season. Leaks, breaks or cracks in the hoses may occur when moving grills into the garage or shed for the winter. So it’s a good idea to inspect the hoses at the start of each season before using the grill for the first time each year.

Host your own welcome party Rather than waiting around for others to welcome you to the neighborhood, take the bull by the horns and introduce yourself to your neighbors in a fun way. Host an open house party and invite your new neighbors. What better way to converse with others than with food, beverages and a festive atmosphere? Plus, your party may lead to reciprocation from others.

THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.
