WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

HIDDEN HERO: OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT CAN MAKE YOU VERY POPULAR Five Things You May Not Know About Your Lawn Mower, Chain Saw, Generator, Power Washer, UTV And More (NAPSI)—Spring is here. Finally. After the 2018 winter season, you may be itching to get outside and spend time in your family yard. Having the right outdoor power equipment, like lawn mowers, chain saws, generators, edgers, trimmers and more, ensures you have the tools to get “backyard ready.” “The right outdoor power equipment can be your best friend when you start to work in your family yard—not to mention the best friend of the neighborhood,” says Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). “If you have a yard, you have a playground, but only if it’s ready for outdoor living and recreation.” Here are several ways outdoor power equipment keeps life humming, prepares family yards to be useful and play worthy, and keeps homeowner associations happy. 1. Plain and simple, outdoor power equipment makes the yard. The right equipment makes it easier than ever to create and take care of a great living landscape. You might not even break a sweat with the right equipment. Make mowing, trimming and pruning a little easier with some of today’s ergonomic, supercharged mowers, trimmers, edgers and chain saws. 2. Outdoor power equipment saves you time. Doing things outside is fun, and using some of the latest equipment will make sure grass is mowed, trees and shrubs are pruned, and borders are edged efficiently and quickly. After all, you have games and barbecues to attend and friends and family to meet (or invite over!). The right equipment can help you quickly take care of outdoor tasks, so you can have more time to enjoy your outdoor family room and relax. 3. The latest and greatest outdoor equipment innovation can make you the envy of neighbors and family. Today’s outdoor power equipment is powered in a variety of ways, from solar to battery and electric, from propane to gasoline. Your neighbors may be jealous if they see you lounging on the front porch with a cold drink watching your robotic mower trim the grass—but don’t let it bother you. Enjoy the time outside and encourage them to check it out. 4. The right equipment at the right time can also win you the Most Popular Neighbor award. Be the person who can whip out a chain saw when the tree falls across the road, or fire up a snow thrower to clear driveways and cul-de-sacs with ease (be sure to use safety precautions, too). Your house will be the most popular one in the neighborhood during a power outage if you have a generator and let your neighbors charge their phones and borrow space in your refrigerator. 5. Storms may wreak havoc, but outdoor power equipment makes sure your life and work aren’t interrupted. Engine-powered water pumps can help dry out homes after a flood or powerful rainstorm. When the lights go out, generators keep your house humming with light and power. Outdoor power equipment not only helps you handle your personal green space, but it also supports our first responders. You can rest easy knowing they have the tools to get their important jobs done. Generators, chain saws, the jaws of life, utility terrain vehicles and more help those who are injured and hurt every day. The efforts of our firefighters, utility contractors and those who work with nonprofit organizations such as Team Rubicon and AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams are all amplified with the help of outdoor power equipment. Follow hashtag #PoweringGood to learn more about people making a difference with their outdoor power equipment. Go to www.opei.org for safety tips and more information on outdoor power equipment.

HELPFUL INSECTS Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Before you adventurous Arians charge right into those new projects, take a little time to learn where you’ll be going so you can avoid getting lost before you get there. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your time is devoted to career demands through much of the week. But Venus, who rules your sign, might be planning how (and with whom) you’ll spend your weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be put off by the surprising turn in the way your project is developing. You’ve invested enough time in it to know how to make all the necessary adjustments. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) The work week goes smoothly for the most part. But a weekend visit to a place in your past could hold surprises for your future, especially where romance is involved. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A sudden attack of shyness for the usually loquacious Lion could be a sign that deep down you’re not sure enough about what (or whom) you had planned to talk up in public. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Deal with that job-related problem on-site -- that is, at the workplace. Avoid taking it home, where it can spoil those important personal plans you’ve made. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to let those favorable comments about your business dealings be known to those in a position to be helpful. Don’t hide your light; let it shine. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Avoid added pressure to finish a project on deadline by steering clear of distractions. To put it somewhat poetically: Time for fun -- when your tasks are done. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be uneasy about an offer from a longtime colleague. But before you reject it, study it. You might be surprised at what it actually contains. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Deal firmly with a difficult family matter. It’s your strength they need right now. You can show your emotions when the situation begins to ease up. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A recent dispute with some coworkers might not have been completely resolved. But other colleagues will be only too happy to offer support of your actions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Let go of that Piscean pride long enough to allow someone to help you with a surprising development. That could make it easier for you to adjust to the change. BORN THIS WEEK: Your willingness to open up to possibilities is why people like you are often among our most popular political leaders. (c) 2018 King Features Syndicate

Why buy life insurance? Facing one’s mortality and the prospect of leaving family members behind is not always easy. Death, financial security and planning for the future are all difficult subjects, but planning ahead can make matters much easier in the long run. Life insurance needs frequently come up when making plans, and many people find that purchasing a life insurance policy is a worthwhile investment. Life insurance holds an important place in overall financial planning. One of the most apparent benefits of life insurance is that it will provide a considerable sum of cash upon the insured’s death, which can be put toward the cost of funeral arrangements, housing and dependent care. Beyond end-of-life bills and care, life insurance can offer other advantages, say the experts at Allstate Insurance Company. Life insurance can provide a family with a financial safety net. When a beneficiary is named, life insurance can serve as an inheritance for that person or people. Heirs may face estate taxes after a loved one dies, and life insurance benefits may help offset all or a portion of the costs.
Business owners also can use life insurance policies to their advantage. Including life insurance with the list of other benefits offered to prospective employees can entice topnotch candidates. Sole proprietors may use life insurance as a business continuation plan so that insurance proceeds can keep the business in the black until it is sold or a replacement owner is found.
There may be benefits to life insurance while a person is living as well. The life insurance information site Term Life 2 Go says that, depending on the policy, life insurance can be borrowed against to pay off debt, buy a house or live off of dividends from the life insurance investment. This can provide a source of supplemental retirement income.
Shopping for life insurance requires careful research and an understanding of the products available. Consumers should have a thorough understanding of term and whole life policies, what premiums will cost, what the death benefit will pay, and if there are any living benefits. For example, living benefits may cover some costs for chronically or terminally ill people.
Gateway Financial advisors say that many life insurance plans Working with an experienced life insurance advisor can help are extremely flexible and can be modified as needs change. Death benefits may be decreased if desired, and premiums can people navigate the types of policies available to them. be skipped, reduced or increased.

Thank you to the Avon Garden Club for the beautiful flowers in the planters throughout the village and around the park. You all do a beautiful job. I especially love the flower cart. Thank you to the village crew for your help hanging the military banners and keeping our village looking so nice. The Memorial Day parade was great as usual. Thanks! On Thursday evening, June 14, after shopping, we stopped at Burger King on Eastern Blvd. in Canandaigua for a light supper meal. When we went to pay, we were informed that the gentleman ahead of us had already picked up the tab. What a wonderful gesture! We did not catch his name or address, so we can't acknowledge him personally. But we would at
I recently enjoyed a local town parade. But there was one float I didn't find appropriate. It had heavy metal music playing loudly, people with painted, blood-like faces, and other gory features. I know this is advertising for your Halloween party, but please, less creepy stuff ? There are children watching and I find some of the

In our 70+ years on this planet, we have never experienced anything like this before. The Ray Ban glasses in the battered original case were anything but impressive at first sight, so we were delighted when we called the Bristol Town Hall to learn they were found and safe. My husband was grieving the loss. What a tribute to kindness. Many blessings to the finder and the Town Hall Staff. Senator Catharine Young (R, C, I - 57th District), presented medals, including the Bronze Star, to the family of the late Arthur Veeder during a ceremony Saturday, June 9th at the Daniel Goho American Legion Post in Dansville. Attending the ceremony were Mr. Veeder’s widow, Velma, his daughter Sharon Sebok, grandson, Carson Nelson, and several other family members and friends. Mr. Veeder grew up in Cohocton and was half way through his senior year at Cohocton High School when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in January of 1944. He served as a rifleman in the 260th Infantry Regiment of the 65th Infantry Division. After arriving in Germany in March of 1945, his regiment endured 55 straight days of combat as the U.S. Army advanced into Germany. Corporal Veeder received a Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious service during the Central European Campaign in 1945. Senator Young presented his family with his Bronze Star and other medals during the ceremony.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Was Son Right to Ignore His Doctor’s Advice? --DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? -- V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve suffered from essential tremor for 16 years. I take 500 mg of primidone and 40 mg of propranolol twice daily. I’ve gradually increased the dose over the years, and the combination works quite well. What is the highest dose of these medications that I can take? Also, are there any new drugs on the market that have been proven to help? -- S.S. ANSWER: Primidone, a medication indicated for seizures, often is used off-label for essential tremor. The normal dose for essential tremor is 250-500 mg at night, but doses up to 750 mg sometimes are used. For seizures, the highest recommended dose is 2,000 mg, so although yours is at the high end of normal for essential tremor (“essential,” by the way, simply means we don’t know what is causing it; it isn’t essential for anything), you still are at a dose that’s well below the safe limit. I suspect that because you have been on it for so long, your body is used to this dose. The usual starting dose is 25 mg. Propranolol is used for many conditions, including high blood pressure and preventing migraines, but its use in essential tremor also is off-label, meaning that the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug for use for this condition. “Off-label” doesn’t necessarily mean your prescription is wrong or dangerous, only that it hasn’t been approved by the FDA. In your case, the combination of primidone and propranolol frequently is used and recommended in the medical literature. For essential tremor, experts have recommended doses up to 320 mg per day, but the dose can be limited by slow heart rate or low blood pressure. If you are doing well, there is no reason to change. Other medications frequently used for essential tremor include gabapentin and topiramate. There also are surgical treatments, deep brain stimulation, gamma knife radiation and ultrasound for resistant cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Rather than using standard verbiage on your résumé, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further. HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Embrace relaxation methods. The APA recommends professionals coping with workplace stress embrace techniques that can effectively alleviate stress. Such techniques include meditation and deep-breathing exercises and can help workers develop their ability to focus purposefully on a single activity. That improved focus may help workers better navigate hectic working environments without succumbing to the stress such environments can produce.
