It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

Appointment companions are a smart move Visits to a physician are just one step people make in an effort to improve their well-being. While it’s important that everyone visit their physicians at least once a year for a checkup, seniors may need to see their physicians more frequently than other age groups. When visiting the doctor, it is easy for anyone to miss important components of what the doctor is saying, and it’s just as easy to misunderstand certain instructions or medication information. Seniors who bring companions along to appointments with their physicians can reduce the risk of misunderstanding advice or diagnoses given by their doctors. Data from U.S. News and World Report states that about one-third of seniors still living on their own take a companion with them to their routine doctor’s office visits. Companions are typically spouses, but they can include children or other family members as well. Patients may find there are many advantages to bringing someone along to an appointment. And companions may want to learn more about patients’ goals at each appointment prior to going along so they can prepare and know how to help during the appointment. Listen - People tend to forget at least half of what they hear in the doctor’s office, says the Archives of Internal Medicine. This tendency may be increased when patients are nervous about the potential outcome of their visits. Bringing a companion along means that both people are actively listening. Together, the information they’ve heard can combine to provide a full account of the visit. Taking notes - Companions can jot down important notes about the appointment, such as dates and times for follow-up visits, medication advice and any other instructions that may be forgotten once the patient leaves the office. Companions can later translate the jargon-heavy language of a physician
into an understandable language the patient can fully understand. Medical history - Sometimes a companion can be a useful resource, calling a doctor’s attention to a patient’s prior hospitalizations and illnesses. Companions can even call attention to any medications the patient is currently taking. Serving as an advocate - Very often a companion can operate as a patient advocate, clarifying questions or getting further information out of a doctor if the patient is hesitant to ask. If the information isn’t clear, the companion can raise red flags or ask to have the instructions put in a different light. Translation - Sometimes patients need companions who speak their native languages when their physicians do not. People are learning that bringing a family member or friend along to doctors’ appointments can be a smart way to make the most of doctor/patient interactions.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Vegan Does Not Need Fish to be Healthy --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been vegan for 15 years. I avoid sugar, limit salt and have no caffeine. Recently, a pharmacist told me that I will not get proper protein unless I add fish to my diet. However, long ago, my doctor told me that my vegan diet was good and that I should take vitamin B-12 daily, which I have been doing. What are your thoughts on adding fish? -- S.N. ANSWER: I agree with your doctor. A vegan diet can be very healthy, and avoiding sugar in particular helps assure that it is. The issue of adequate protein is brought up frequently, but most Americans consume more than twice the recommended daily allowance of protein. Plant foods have plenty of protein, and you certainly do not need to eat fish in order to get adequate protein. I think fish can be a healthy part of a diet, but it is not necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital several months ago with poor heart function and only 10 percent kidney function. He has been on dialysis three times a week since then. We have been inquiring for several months about his current kidney function, and we cannot get an answer. We are just curious as to whether there has been any improvement. -- S.K. ANSWER: Dialysis is a way of replacing kidney function when the kidneys can no longer remove enough of the body’s waste materials. It sounds like your husband is on hemodialysis, where the blood is run through a machine that removes excess fluid and waste products, such as creatinine and potassium, which would otherwise increase in concentration in the blood. High potassium is life-threatening, and creatinine, though not dangerous, is the molecule we look at most commonly to estimate kidney function. Very rarely, kidney function can return even after a prolonged time on dialysis. I have never seen a case, but one study showed two cases per thousand where dialysis could be stopped. The clue that kidney function was returning was that urine output, which normally is scant while on hemodialysis, had increased over time. Unfortunately, 99.8 percent of the time, the kidney failure is permanent. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old male, and I have been heavy for most of my life. Over the past 18 months, I have lost a great deal of weight and feel better than I have in years. My issue is where the excess has ended up: just below my belt-line. I know that so-called spot reducing doesn’t work, so I’m at a loss as to how to go about getting rid of this paunch. It’s not above my belt, and it is stubborn. Any ideas? -- T.C. ANSWER: If you keep losing weight, odds are that stubborn fat will gradually go away. High-intensity aerobic exercise did seem to help in one study. I have had patients undergo liposuction, but that helps your appearance, not your overall health. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CONNECTING CAREGIVERS TO LOCAL RESOURCES AND SUPPORT (NAPSI)—Americans are living longer these days. The number of older adults is expected to reach 73 million by 2030. With 30 percent of Americans serving in a caregiving role, it is important to remember that caring for a loved one can be both rewarding and difficult. Often, caregivers don’t know where to turn for advice and assistance. That’s where the Eldercare Locator—a program of the U.S. Administration on Aging and administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a)—Comes in. By connecting older adults and their caregivers to local resources and support, the Eldercare Locator makes life a bit easier all around. The Eldercare Locator connects older adults and their caregivers to local services and supports across the spectrum of need, including in-home and community-based services, transportation and healthy aging. What It Offers Some of the Eldercare Locator’s more popular publications are: • “Before You Give Up the Keys: Create a Roadmap for Transportation Independence” • “Older Adults and Medication Safety” • “You Gave, Now Save: Guide to Benefits for Seniors” • “Living Well with Dementia in the Community: Resources and Support.” Learn More: For tips and advice on caregiving, visit www.eldercare.acl.gov or call 1 (800) 677-1116 and see @eldercarelocator on Facebook and @EldercareLoc on Twitter.

DID YOU KNOW? Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

GVPS ONLINE POLL: Televangelist Jesse Duplantis, whose ministry already owns 3 jets, recently posted a video saying he had divine conversation in which Jesus asked for a $54 million private jet. Duplantis urged followers to help him fulfill the request, reassuring them that the goal wasn’t to raise money to fund the purchase, but to have followers join him in “believing” in God for it to happen. How do you feel about Duplantis’ campaign to raise the money needed to purchase the jet?
• There is no need for a luxurious jet, he needs to lead a more humble life! • People have the right to follow their beliefs even if it means supporting this plan. • It is not my place to judge, he answers to a higher power! Poll Ends: 06/12/18

I need a home Storm is an 8-yearold female American Pit Bull Terrier mix who weighs 47 pounds. She loves her walks, unless it’s raining (kind of ironic, given her name). She’s working on not pulling on leash and spiffing up her manners. She’d benefit from training classes as a way to bond with her new humans and work on her doggie skills. She’s not opposed to hanging with other dogs but she does like to choose who she hangs with. She’ll do best in a home where any children are age 10 or over. She’s available free of charge to approved adopters, age 60 and over, through Lollypop Farm’s Seniors-forSeniors program. Bring everyone, dogs included to meet Storm.

According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.
