DID YOU KNOW? Traffic can be bad for your health and also bad for your car. According to a University of Surrey study published in Science Daily, pollution levels inside of cars were found to be 40 percent higher while sitting in traffic jams or at red lights compared to levels in free-flowing traffic. The World Health Organization considers interior car pollution one of the top 10 health risks faced by humans. Health implications are not the only hazard posed by traffic jams. Stop-and-go traffic also takes its toll on vehicles. When idling, engine ventilation systems are at their weakest, warns Road and Travel. As a result, acidic combustion products and incompletely burned fuel in the engine can start to form engine deposits. Over time, such deposits may clog fuel injectors and interfere with the flow of fuel to the combustion chamber. Traffic can age vehicle engines and their braking systems. Using brake fluid and oils for extreme driving conditions may help prevent some damage. Avoiding rush hour is another way to improve personal health and safeguard the condition of the vehicle.

Local Artists Make a Splash in Mendon Two local artists displayed several of their pieces at Mendon 64 on Tuesday, August 7th. Throughout the evening, they mingled with guests who stopped by to meet them and peruse their work. Even though these two artists displayed side by side, their styles were quite divergent. Artist Kathy Houston has been involved with art for quite some time, having been an art teacher for 30 years. She is a member of several local art organizations and has had her work displayed in such places as the Fayad Gallery and Lollypop Farm. Several of her subjects, perhaps not surprisingly, are animals like␣Rusty,␣her watercolor painting of the horse she rode for three years. Her floral and landscape pieces also abound. A watercolor painting of Strawberry Castle of Penfield is a delightfully warm representation of the well-known landmark. It is in her Native American paintings that one can clearly see the several different techniques and mediums Houston uses. Her choices include pastel, oil, graphite, print, gouache and mixed media. Houston described the making of the upper painting pictured,␣Sitting Bull,␣as a complex process involving print making paper, detergent, painting on plexiglass, caran d’Ache and placing paper on the plexiglass before running the entire piece through a printing press. Certainly, Kathy Houston’s pieces display her skill in several techniques while remaining unified in that subtle, blurring translucence that is often definitive of watercolor. Jason Walker, on the other hand, is a newcomer to the art scene, and he is wading in to the hip with bold colors and non-traditional processes in his at times non-representational pieces. Walker self-describes his work as “grunge,” largely due to the fact that he frequently uses such materials as spray paint, newspaper, layers of acrylics, palette knives and fabric to create the designs and textures of his paintings. He explains that he seldom uses paintbrushes in his processes, and the washes and dynamic interruptions of color substantiate this. While his works may not be specifically realistic, there is a definitive connection to the
natural world that is felt as one views his art. He created his piece,␣Red and Blue, by spray painting a robin’s egg blue base and using acrylics to create ten or more additional layers, working them into the base to create a grunge patina and various textures. The resultant piece somehow evokes a landscape with swathes of color that suggest water, trees, perhaps even a flower and snow. Conversely, his work, Beyond Red, while done in a similar color palette, is almost completely nonobjective. Other pieces, such as Walker’s␣Grunge Lava␣and␣Venus,␣more deliberately exhibit representational qualities. His␣Grunge Lava␣is an imaginative impression of a break in ice through which lava is seeping. His␣Venus␣certainly evokes images of Earth’s bright sister planet with its variegated gold wash of colors. Walker created this piece using an acrylic pour process in which the paint is thinned with alcohol, another medium is then used to help with blending, and the mixture is placed in a cup, the canvas placed over it and slowly released so that it flows across the canvas as the artist turns and tips the canvas to guide the paint. Finally, the painting is dried and any bubbles are burst. Full of vision, skill and bold perspective, Jason Walker has made a strong introduction for himself with this collection.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS In addition to fresh produce, farmers’ markets may offer baked and other prepared goods. Shopkeepers often mingle with their customers, offering trade secrets and recipe ideas. Additionally, local farm families supported by farmers’ markets generally offer supreme customer service to keep shoppers coming back week after week.
MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come. As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort. Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted. Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people. Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty might upset some people, but you inevitably win more admirers for having the courage to tell the truth when others are more likely to scramble for cover. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A trusted colleague sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A welcome piece of good news helps clear the air in a family situation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new opportunity sounds promising. But watch out for any conditions that might be attached. Before making a decision, ask that each one be explained in detail. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be distracted by promises of good times, yet you ultimately reach the goals you set for yourself. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Seal cracks and gaps around your home’s windows, doors, and vents. These can be a considerable source of energy loss, allowing conditioned air to escape and unconditioned air to infiltrate your home, placing stress on your furnace and air conditioner in the process. An easy DIY solution is to caulk around windows, doors, and vents, and install or replace worn weatherstripping. An average home loses up to 30 percent of its energy through air leaks, so sealing your home is a worthwhile exercise.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: My 23-year-old son is a bodybuilder, and much to my dismay, he takes steroids. I know he takes testosterone, and I don’t know what else. How will this affect him? -- Anon. ANSWER: Testosterone has many bad long-term effects, and he really should stop it. As a resident, I took care of a seemingly very healthy, very muscular 30-year-old man with terrible heart failure due to a heart attack. Many similar reports have led to suspicion that steroids taken for bodybuilding increase risk of heart attack and even sudden death. There appear to be many other long-term effects, including neuropsychiatric effects of anger and aggressive behavior. They also may reduce sperm count and affect fertility. I don’t know what else he may be taking, but I would strongly urge him to evaluate all supplements carefully. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a healthy female until I had an injury to my back. I experience pain and tingling in my right side, going down the back of my right leg. Sitting is especially painful, as is standing in one place for too long. Now the pain has started in my left side also. I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, physical therapy, epidural shots and pain pills. I also had two laminectomies (decompression surgery on the spinal canal) on L4/L5 last year, with no relief from the pain. Upon seeing another neurosurgeon, I have been told that I have some large Tarlov cysts (1 cm). There does not seem to be a great amount of information about these on the internet, plus I am not sure what information out there is accurate. One doctor on the internet is all about having surgery on them. The neurosurgeon I am seeing does not want to do surgery just yet. He says that surgery does not always bring about pain relief. Can you share some information about these Tarlov cysts and what can be done for the continued back and leg pain? Dealing with this for several years has caused me much emotional distress and depression. -- F.H. ANSWER: Tarlov cysts, also called perineurial cysts, occur along the lining of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In one study, in 500 people with MRI scans, 23 had Tarlov cysts, but only five had any symptoms from them. In this study, the cysts were drained by a needle, which relieved the pain, although the pain usually came back as the cysts refilled with fluid. I agree with your neurosurgeon that surgery on these does not guarantee success. Since you have had two surgeries and multiple types of therapies that haven’t worked, I can understand your frustration. It might be worth talking to the neurosurgeon about a trial of draining the cysts to see if that helps the symptoms. The booklet on back problems gives an overview of the causes and treatments for the most-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Your Live comfortably on less Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren’t in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a longstanding trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to reenter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one’s late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that. • Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of home-related expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housing-related expenses. • Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals’ finances. That’s why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to long-term care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years.
Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month to help, please call us to volunteer. We’ll provide you with training and supplemental insurance. LIFESPAN 244-8400, ext. 142
Did You Know? Baby Boomers, make up the largest generation of Americans born in United States history. Boomers include anyone born between the years 1946 and 1964, as the number of births began to rise as World War II veterans returned home from battle. The greatest number of Baby Boomers were born in 1957, when numbers peaked at 4,300,00.
• Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive. A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out. • Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but empty-nesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly one-third of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions. Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life.

Please take the time, take your children or grandchildren to visit the elderly and show them love and that someone cares. Talk to them about their professions, and their lives. There is a great “wealth” about the elderly and the lives they have lived. It will not only bless your day, it will bless their days. We would like to thank Seth Graham of Seth Graham Design at 3105 Main St., Caledonia, for creating such a beautiful Memorial video of
me which made me slam my brakes and lean on the horn. You looked at me as if you did nothing wrong!! You may have a death wish but I sure as heck don't!!!! This intersection is bad enough without inconsiderate idiots like you making it worse!!!! Next time, continue your left turn and proceed to the street on the right, approx. two car lengths away and turn around in someone's driveway or in the driveway on the left which is the same distance. Remember, you are not the only person on the road AND LOOK before you turn!!! I returned home from work only to find my neighbor behind me on this dead end street had company. How did I
our mother/wife/MeMe Donna Brew. Seth's compassion and ideas were truly heartfelt and appreciated. He's absolutely a talented young man. Thanks again, Seth, for keeping our memories alive through this beautiful video!
Thank you Kelly for volunteering your time to put up the new letters on the Opera Block building. Your dedication to making the Avon community look beautiful is greatly appreciated by everyone living in or visiting our Town.
know? The cars parked partially on my lawn were a dead giveaway. I pulled up and asked the lady with the baby, can you not park on my lawn? Well now my neighbor claims they have to move, because they have neighbor problems. Problems like, the dog barking, putting your overflowing tote to the road on Friday for Tuesday pick up so it leaves a mess all over? Problems like not mowing by your tree out front that still has Christmas lights on it? Problems like the cat spraying the garage and taking a dump in the flower bed? Yes that is a neighbor problem. Do you need boxes for your move or a good Realtor? Let me know! I would love to help you out so I don't have a neighbor problem.
Thank you Crosby’s Gas & Mini Market -Caledonia! And thank you to the person who found my billfold insert and the employee who returned the insert to me by mail. It was appreciated very much!!!!
How can you be so shameful? For the past 3 weeks in our quiet town you have stolen things off of porches, have tried breaking into homes of elders and broke windows. In our yard, your picture is being taken and we have security alarms. What is wrong with people like you? We have reported this to all the authorities! You know who you are, so stop and get a job instead of depending on us! If you get caught, you may not like the outcome and you may get a new home!

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
