Control mold when using air conditioning Exposure to mold in a home can be hazardous, leading to any number of adverse health effects, including respiratory distress. Certain strains of mold may release mycotoxins, which can cause bleeding in the lungs and pneumonia. Mold can grow in any dark and damp spot, which makes air conditioning units prime locations for mold proliferation. Mold spores can be circulated through a home via a central air conditioning system or window air conditioning unit. Mold spores in the air are very easy to inhale, especially for young children and elderly people. Air conditioners also are susceptible to mold growth. Preventing mold from becoming a problem means being in tune to indicators that mold may be present, and then taking the necessary actions to eradicate that mold and preventing future growth. Visible mold or a musty smell when operating the air conditioner are prime indicators of a problem.

Channing H. Philbrick Park: A Truly “Hidden” Gem If you weren’t looking for it, you will almost certainly miss it.␣␣While driving along 441 East towards Penfield, at the cusp of the village, a small road, Linear Drive, suddenly appears on the right-hand side. No signs announce this quiet nook of a park. One must know it is there. A very short drive down this road brings visitors to the small upper parking area. Situated along the banks of Irondequoit Creek, the park contains both wooded and open areas. Two trails branch off from this upper parking area. One, labeled “Fishing Trail,” leads down to the open grassy areas stretching along a long curve of the creek bed; the other delves directly into the woods and following the creek to the east and is filled with small, rippling creek falls. A bridge crosses from one bank to the other, however, the creek bed is easily accessible and could be crossed through the water. Fishing, with proper permits, is encouraged, and people fish from the banks, the bridge or directly in the creek itself. If one follows the creek trail in the direction of the open grassy spaces, one finds a picnic table and a small open grill. There is also a single structure playground, which is currently closed, and swings nearby. A men’s and a women’s single-stall bathroom is provided as are some garbage receptacles.

The Irondequoit Creek itself is beautiful. A rushing current creates a babbling sound against the silence. Leaning trees bend down across the water; some reaching their branches into its cool depths. A walk way ends with a wooden bench, perfect for relaxing and listening to the creek falls. In the lower park area, grassy banks offer a perfect picnic location with several spots for dangling one’s feet over the creek edge and dropping a fishing line. This quiet green space is free to enjoy, and it is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon, whether you want to fish or just enjoy Iroquois Falls. Know of another “hidden” spot we should visit? Let us know by emailing us at␣hometown@gvpennysaver.com. Your suggestion just might be our next destination!

To the family who has the cute little produce stand in the Village - we love having the convenient, friendly option to buy from you. Everything has been fresh and delicious. Thank you!
I'd like to thank GVPS for the Give and Take Column as nearly 30 people called me in response to the free garden plants ad I posted. I was unable to return all the phone calls but would like to thank all who responded to the ad.
Thank you to all our friends, family, co-workers and colleagues who have helped us get ready for “Baby Bedo.” We are truly blessed! -MK and NK
To the lovely person who left a Kitty Mug with a Showering Plant on my doorstep, I love it and I thank you! Nancy D.
On July 31st, I received a special surprise when another customer at Aldi's in Geneseo paid for my groceries. What a thoughtful and generous gesture!
The First Presbyterian Church of Livonia Chairpersons of the New 2 U Clothing Sale (Sept. 21 & 22) and Penny Social (Oct. 27th) would like to thank Susie Q.
To the farmer who thinks city people should stay in the city and not invade their precious country living I have this to say. You need to follow the same rules and laws that I have to in this state. You're not special. You don't get a pass. I worked all my life, I saved to
build and own property in the country. I paid taxes all my working life. I have never been tax exempt! I was NEVER paid not to work either. So you benefit from me paying taxes, then cry that we should move back into the city. I wasn't given farm property as an inheritance from my parents or grandparents either. Yes, you work and work hard, but so do I. Population is growing, it's a fact, so here's my sarcastic comment back...Either accept that your country is changing or perhaps YOU should move further out to farm. Hey, Smoky the Bear! Why don't you burn your putrid smelling garbage in your
Rescue and Dreamers Closet Consignment Sales for their very much appreciated donations to our sales! Although we’ve had a very dry summer, all the towns have beautiful flowers thanks to the faithful waterers. “In my neck of the woods” the hanging baskets and business’ flowers along Main Street in Livonia are so pretty. Also many thanks to those caring for beds in Vital Park, Long Point Park (and just south of the park) and Mart at Fortune Palace in Lakeville for his lovely garden. P.S. The hanging baskets are nice but I miss the tire planters at Briggs Tire.
fireplace inside your house instead of in your back yard late at night fouling the air of the entire neighborhood? What gives you the right to ruin the air everyone has to breathe? Especially people with asthma or COPD trying to get some fresh air only to encounter remnants of your foul smelling garbage odor that has invaded their open doors and windows and permeated the entire house. I asked the Town Supervisor it if was legal to burn garbage in a back yard. His bizarre answer was 1) open burning of garbage/ trash fires is not allowed, but, 2) burning garbage/trash fires in an urn or container is allowed. Duh? Maybe we will get lucky and it will rain,
As usual, this year’s summer programs for the children at the Livonia Public Library were just wonderful. Seems the adults enjoyed each one as much as the kids! Many thanks to the staff! My favorite this year was the young man that did the “African Drum” singing and dancing program. “Library’s Rock", A Pleased Nana
and Smoky will disappear for a long time. To the person or people who took my 2 year old little girl's backpack in the parking lot of the [local church] on July 4th, I hope you enjoy my 2 year old's things, her baby blanket, her diapers and her tablet. She was asking for her things the rest of the night and will continue to for weeks. You are disgusting, and it is a shame you could not just turn it in to lost and found. She says you stole it, and even she understands you are disgusting and rotten.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defensive. Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon find the situation shifting in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting that personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now, before they can create costly delays. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask for -- no, demand -- help with this problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand they show solid proof why they think your ideas won’t work. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause the usually sure-footed Goat some unsettling moments. But keep going. The path ahead gets easier as you move forward. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There also could be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of what’s right can inspire others if you remember not to push too hard to make your case. Moderation works best for you. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know your opinion about whether it is OK to crush up different psychiatric medications and put them in a small container of water to drink. This doesn’t seem very safe to me, but I’d like an expert opinion. -- Anon. ANSWER: I’ll give you my answer, and also tell you where to find an expert opinion. My answer is that many people have trouble swallowing pills, and that most pills can be crushed and taken with water or mixed in with food. Your local pharmacy sells pill crushers, or you can get a mortar and pestle. While you are at the pharmacy, ask your pharmacist. He or she can look at your medications and tell you whether it is safe for you to crush your particular medications. Slow-release medications, of which there are many, should not be crushed. Often, the bottle will tell you, but ask your pharmacist for the expert opinion. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts about the MiraDRY procedure to get rid of underarm sweat? Is it safe not to have sweat under the arms? -- S.J. ANSWER: MiraDRY is the brand name of a microwave device designed to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is not normal underarm sweating, but a rare condition of abnormal, drenching sweat that greatly interferes with social activities. It is currently used only for underarms -- not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis. According to several published papers, the microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness. This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. I also found a very helpful website at www.sweathelp.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What causes foot drop? Is there any cure for it? -- B.H. ANSWER: Foot drop is most commonly caused by damage to the peroneal nerve, which wraps around the fibula, one of the two bones of the leg (anatomically, only the lower leg is called the leg, as opposed to the thigh). The nerve can be damaged from trauma, such as during surgery or prolonged hospitalization. Leg casts and prolonged positioning with stress on the nerve, such as squatting, also can damage the nerve. Most people describe numbness but not pain, and the dropped foot can cause people to trip, so people with this condition learn to flex the hip to lift the thigh up higher. The diagnosis can be confirmed by electrical studies of the nerves. Treatment usually is to prevent further damage, with a splint to keep the foot flexed upward. A physical therapist can prescribe helpful exercises. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Different generations can learn and benefit from one another In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Finding renewed vigor Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another. Planning for the future Younger generations may not understand the concept of “hard times” or “doing without” like a person who has lived through various ups and downs. Passing along advice about economic cycles, saving for the future and maintaining stability is one area of expertise at which many seniors excel. Practicing interpersonal skills All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become
stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation. Learning new technology Younger generations can impart knowledge of technological devices to older adults. People with skills are usually happy to share their knowledge. Even if seniors aren’t ready to purchase tablets or smartphones, they may be excited to have their grandchildren teach them about the latest gadgets. Providing sense of purpose Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the liklihood of isolation and depression in older adults. And younger generations can discover the benefits of personal social interaction rather than communicating exclusively through social media apps. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD
GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER
Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.
Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.
