PETS AND HOLIDAY GIFTING Furry, finned and feathered friends help make a house a home. These companions are more than just pets; they’re often cherished family members. So it should come as no surprise that, come the holidays, people want to lavish extra attention on their animals by way of presents. The American Pet Products Association says pet owners spend billions of dollars on their pets each year. The majority of pet owners plan to gift their pets on holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas. DogTime.com says that pet presents are not a North American phenomenon, either. Pet owners in the United Kingdom are expected to spend the equivalent of $46 U.S. per pet on gifts. While dog owners are more likely to buy their pets gifts, cat owners have been closing that gap over the years. Some pet parents even offer Christmas cards or hang Christmas stockings for their pets. According to data from PricewaterhouseCoopers, shoppers between the ages of 17 and 21 are willing to spend more than anyone else ($70) on holiday gifts for their pets. Gifting pets has become the norm, but various animal welfare organizations advise that giving companion animals as pets should be avoided. Pets given as gifts may be at a higher risk for surrender to shelters by families who miscalculated the amount of time and money that’s necessary to care for pets. Welcoming a pet into the family is often a personal decision, and one that should be weighed carefully by all members of the household.

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.

Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other and potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. Webster’s White Christmas in the Village Full of Holiday Spirit By Amanda Dudek On Saturday, December 1st, White Christmas in the Village will return to Webster, filled with old and new holiday delights. This year’s offerings will touch both the young and the young at heart with both fun and nostalgia. A Bounce House will be offered from 3-6pm on Main Street. Horse-drawn wagon rides will also be offered from 3-6pm. A special holiday Storytelling will commence at 4pm at Yesterday’s Muse Book Store. Santa Clauswill be available from 4-5:45pm at the Village Hall with cookies and coffee. For those creative folks, or those who have a sweet tooth, Hegedorns extends an invitation to join them for cookie decorating, starting at 4pm. The festival would not be complete with out music. This year, the Church of the Good Shepherd Chime Bell Choir will perform at 5pm on Main Street. Also, the Rochester Rhapsody Carolers will serenade festival-goers with Christmas classics, starting at 4:30pm. As a final event, the Electric Parade will begin at 6:30pm, proving that no matter your age, there is something about Christmas lights and parades that never fails to please. Most importantly, White Christmas in the Village is a chance for Webster area friends, family and neighbors to come together. Smiling faces abound, and many people take the opportunity to dress as festively as the decorated shops and streets. Whether the day offers a snowy white scene or not, the spirit of a white Christmas gilds the village in shimmery visions of white Christmases past and fills hearts with the wonder of the season and memories of the child-like joy of the first snow.

Offer Your Family the Gift of Giving this Year Having recently celebrated Thanksgiving Day and remembered our many blessings, may we not forget the twin companions of gratitude: joy and generosity. Being truly thankful for friends, family and the many good things in one’s life can create that joyful state of mind which often overflows into good will and compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves. Regrettably, with the push to purchase following so closely upon the heels of, and in some cases even preceding, Thanksgiving, this “heart-healthy” Spirit of Giving is all too often lost in the following flurry of activities. For this reason and several others, Giving Tuesday was started. Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and after the prime shopping days of Plaid Friday, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. While there is certainly much festive fun to be had in preparing for the holidays and selecting the perfect gifts for our friends and loved ones, balancing this with a mindfulness of those in need is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others, to our children and even to ourselves. For the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, this isn’t just a pleasant, seasonal platitude, these are words we live by. We practice giving back to our community in our pages and beyond. Each week, free of charge, we announce upcoming Non-Profit Events which boosts community support for non-profit and local charitable causes and community support organizations. Adoptable pets receive our help finding homes by sharing their photos in our Pet Place section. We are also privileged to bring you inspirational and interesting Hometown Stories from all over our readership area. Libraries are provided the opportunity at no cost to publish announcements on educational activities for the community, professional training programs, literacy programs and more in our Library Columns, while many organizations are able to ask for assistance thanks to our Who Can Volunteer section. The Genesee Valley Penny Saver also supports local schools, literacy, the fight against hunger, MS research and other causes. We encourage all of our readers to take time on Giving Tuesday to find a way to help those who are struggling this holiday season. Giving money is only one way to help; gifts of time, food, acts of service and even simple holiday cards can make such a difference in the lives of those who are struggling or lonely this year. Visit www.givingtuesday.org for more information on this global initiative or connect with charitable organizations in your own community. You can search through Non-profit events and local volunteer opportunities on our website at www.gvpennysaver.com. “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” — Winston S. Churchill

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage.

The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Does Hole in Heart Increase Stroke Risk? --DEAR DR. ROACH: Articles on strokes or TIAs rarely mention that they can be caused by a congenital heart defect. I had a family member with a patent foramen ovale, found at age 54, after he’d had several strokes. He had surgery to repair it and has been well ever since. I would like to know why a PFO isn’t often mentioned or considered. When I see an obituary for a young person who died suddenly, I wonder if there was an undiagnosed hole in the person’s heart. One in 6 people has a hole in the heart; that is a high percentage. I think the public should be educated and made aware of this congenital condition. -- J.R. ANSWER: A patent foramen ovale (which literally means “open oval-shaped window”) is a remnant of our embryology. The foramen ovale is a small open flap that is necessary to send oxygenated blood from the placenta to the body of the developing fetus. In about 25 percent of people (that’s 1 in 4, even higher than you thought), the “hole” doesn’t completely close. PFO is the most common of the “holes” in the heart (ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defects are the other common ones). A stroke is caused by the death of brain cells. PFOs are certainly implicated in strokes. In general, the younger and healthier the person, the more likely it is that a “cryptogenic” stroke (one with no obvious cause) may be due to a PFO. What is likely is that a blood clot can pass through the foramen ovale and go to the brain’s blood vessel, blocking off blood supply to an area of the brain, causing a stroke. The absolute increase in stroke risk is hard to quantify. For people who have never had a stroke, it is generally not recommended to close the PFO. This surgery has risks, and these risks probably outweigh the small potential benefit. For people who have had a stroke, the risk of recurrent stroke from PFO is higher. One group has created a model (the RoPE score) to help predict the likelihood of recurrent stroke. This can help the clinician examine the benefits of surgical repair of the PFO. Surgery is most likely to benefit younger people without traditional risk factors for stroke. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that letting vinegar touch your skin causes arthritis. Is there any danger in using vinegar as a cleaning agent? -- N.J.A. ANSWER: I often get asked whether apple cider vinegar cures arthritis (it doesn’t) or can help relieve symptoms (it might, but there is no good evidence that it does), but I have never heard anyone ask about vinegar touching the skin causing internal problems. Vinegar is a mild acid (most are about 5 percent acetic acid), which normally isn’t particularly irritating to the skin, and shouldn’t be absorbed. Even if it were, acetic acid is found in the body (it’s an important molecule in several metabolic pathways), and your body can use it as an energy source. There is no reason to be concerned about being exposed to household vinegar. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Delivering The Freedom Of Choice REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness.

In addition to their entertainment quality, crossword puzzles can help improve cognition and brain health in individuals of all ages. The first known crossword puzzle to be published was created by a British journalist named Arthur Wynne, who is often credited as the inventor of crosswords. The first puzzle appeared in the New York World on December 21, 1913. The original crossword was diamond-shaped and did not feature the familiar black squares. Thanks to all those who came to my husband’s rescue when he fell October 31 in the driveway at the Livingston Skilled Nursing Facility. What a bunch of caring and helpful people. Thanks again to all. Have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas. My daughter and I were walking on the Trolley Trail on Saturday, November 10. It was very cold and very windy, and our orange, white, and blue BB8 Blanket fell out of the stroller. We didn't notice until we got home, and it was too cold to take her out again. The next morning, we went out looking
There are certain stores in my area that always have only one (or on rare occasions, two) cash registers open. It drives me absolutely NUTS that people will be in line with at least fifty items and will very clearly see me or someone else behind them in line with only one item but not offer to let us ahead of them. Please consider this the next time you are shopping and the person in line behind you has only an item or two. I promise, it takes mere seconds to for us to get through the line.

They said sorry we were swamped this morning (they close between 12-1pm for lunch). When I finally was brought to the examination room, I was told the doctor would be in shortly. 35 minutes later, my doctor came into the room and said, “good news, your blood work came back great!" Once she took the time from my 5-minute visit to glance at her computer, she noticed my thyroid was off the charts. She thought her mistake was funny! I did not! DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
