Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi! My name is

Donna! I am a 6-month-old old English Sheepdog. I have a 10 year old Basset Hound sister who doesn’t love to play with me, but I know she loves me. My hobbies include shoving my face in the snow, following my mom all over the house, herding the kids, and taking a lot of baths. I think I am the best pet my parent’s ever had! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. --DEAR DR. ROACH: A column in a popular consumer magazine states that taking a baby aspirin daily does more harm than good, and it should not be taken unless you have heart disease. I have been taking a baby aspirin daily for 10 years, and now I’m concerned. Your thoughts, please. -- G.D. ANSWER: Experts disagree on the best advice. Some points, however, are not controversial: Aspirin is beneficial for reducing future heart risks in people with established heart disease, but it increases the risk of bleeding events. Some of these are minor, but a few are potentially life-threatening. According to a recent review of published studies, in people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease, a daily aspirin reduces the risk of a nonfatal heart attack by about 20 percent, without significantly changing stroke risk or risk of dying from heart disease. Risk of bleeding is increased by 50 percent. Also, newer evidence suggests that aspirin may decrease the risk of some cancers, especially colon cancer. Aspirin is more likely to have a net benefit in people with higher risk of heart disease, even if it isn’t diagnosed. The decision of taking aspirin should be made after a thorough review of all your individual risk factors, including heart disease risk and history of bleeding, and possibly colon cancer risk. When I discuss aspirin with patients, I very seldom recommend it to anyone with no known coronary disease who has had a significant side effect (such as bleeding) with aspirin in the past. As more studies are failing to show benefit, these recommendations may change. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ailments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? -- V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to secondhand smoke or other airborne pollutants. Quitting smoking is by far the most important action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes. Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems. The booklet on COPD explains in detail both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 601W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Did you know that your children can become entangled in their fitted crib sheet and suffocate?

They Can! Are you reading this thinking “It won’t happen to my baby because he/she can roll or crawl, I put him/ her to sleep on his/her back, the sheet fits snuggly, and there are no blankets in the crib…plus I peek in on the baby through the night?” That is what we thought too! Photo taken 7/22/06

Did you know it only takes 3 minutes for a healthy infant to suffocate? We didn’t know either. Please learn from our tragedy, STOP using fitted crib sheets.

Please visit www.quickzipsheet.com to purchase Quick Zip Safety Sheets or Stay Put Sheets. If we had these sheets on Isaac’s crib, we would still have Isaac.

DID YOU KNOW? Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

REASONS TO CLEAN YOUR CAR (NAPSI)—If any of the more than 260 million cars in America is yours, here’s important advice: Keep it clean. First, dirt can damage the paint, erode the protective finish and lead to rust. Second, a clean car improves gas mileage. Dirt causes drag. Third, it’s not safe to drive with dirt, bugs and debris covering the windows, especially at night. Fourth, you increase your car’s trade-in value. Fifth, a clean car just seems to run better.

Fortunately, it’s easy to avoid these problems. A U.S.-based company makes car-cleaning pads that work with just car wash soap and water to remove bugs, dirt, grime, minor road tar, bird droppings and so on. There’s no need for separate bug removers, glass cleaners, sponges, tar removers, clay bars and the like and there are no chemicals or detergents in the reusable pads. These Bugs Off Pads are environmentally friendly as well as safe for paint, clear coat, plastic, glass, graphics and metals. The company even offers a money-back guarantee. Once your car is clean, consider the wheels. Reusable, durable Better Than A Brush Wheel Scrubbers also work with only soap and water.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Narrow the gap between indoor and outdoor temperatures. The DOE notes that the smaller the difference between the temperature indoors and outside the lower cooling costs will be. While it may be tempting to set thermostats to room temperature (68 F) on days when temperatures reach 90 F or above, that’s an enormous temperature gap that will result in a high energy bill. Instead, the DOE recommends setting thermostats to 78 F whenever possible.

Shop Local New York State Products By: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Joyce Hornick and Wendy Wasserman Amanda Dudek Don’t play ketchup.␣Mustard up the courage to relish in cleaner air this summer! Look for local New York State products to use for your summer cookouts and events. By purchasing local products, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, veggies and condiments, you’ll be decreasing air pollution by shortening the distance that these products have to travel from farm to reusable plate. To find local New York State products, check out the␣TasteNY␣and the␣New York State Grown and Certified␣programs. Also look for the TasteNY and Grown and Certified labels on products at your local store. Joyce Hornick, a Dietetic Intern, and Wendy Wasserman, a Communications Specialist, agree.␣ In their July 2nd, 2012 post for USDA Initiatives Food and Nutrition, entitled, “Top Reasons to Shop at a Farmers Market,” Hornick and Wasserman share reasons why shopping local, such as at farmer’s markets, is the best choice. “Access to fresh, locally grown foods, for starters. That may be one of the best reasons, but there are many more. Farmers markets have fruits and vegetables at the peak of the growing season. This means produce is at its freshest and tastes the best. The food is typically grown near where you live, not thousands of miles away or another country. Shopping at farmers markets also supports your

local farmers and keeps the money you spend on food closer to your neighborhood. Nutrition.gov␣recently filmed a␣video␣to promote the benefits of shopping at farmers markets, featuring a registered dietitian as she talks with farmers and customers at the market. VISUALLY IMPAIRED READER INSPIRES AUTHOR

CROSSWORD

(NAPSI)—Four years ago, bestselling author Mary Jane Clark spoke at the Friends of the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped’s Fall Festival. There, she met Ottilie Lucas, a former rehabilitation teacher for people with macular degeneration and other disabilities who is visually impaired herself. After the festival, “we continued our correspondence and one thing led to another,” Lucas says of Clark. “She decided to include a character in her next book with macular degeneration.” And so was born Terri Donovan, introduced in the first book in Clark’s Wedding Cake Mysteries series, 2011’s “To Have and to Kill.” “Mary Jane asked me to give her ways to identify symptoms that a person may be experiencing macular degeneration,” Lucas says. These include blurred vision and difficulty discerning the intensity of colors—symptoms shared by Terri Donovan, who runs a bakery and is the mother of the protagonist of Clark’s series, struggling actress Piper Donovan. Lucas, who was born with retinitis pigmentosa, became a patron of the New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC) in 1966. TBBC is among more than 100 libraries across the United States affiliated with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress.

NLS oversees a free reading program for U.S. residents and citizens living abroad who are blind, have low vision, or cannot hold a book because of a physical disability. NLS patrons may choose from tens of thousands of books and dozens of magazines in audio and braille-including mysteries such as Mary Jane Clark’s. NLS also loans the portable playback equipment needed to read its audiobooks. Patrons may access books online through the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service. Lucas has been married 49 years and has been on more than 20 ocean cruises. “Ottilie is such an inspiration,” Clark says. “She helped me so much in the creation of Terri Donovan—a mother who faces macular degeneration head-on, who doesn’t feel sorry for herself and is determined to adapt to the challenges she faces. Your Avoid aches and pains when gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. • Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. • Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. • Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the

stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. • Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.

Early Tuesday evening, I pulled my car into GearHeadz Auto Repair on Rt. 15 in Avon. My car had been acting very strangely, and the battery light was on. Michael Rubert asked me to pull my car to an open bay door. My car refused to start again. I had just finished my second day of work at a new job, and my two children were still at daycare, waiting for me. Mike didn't hesitate. He offered me his van, complete with the necessary car seats, to pick up my children. Then, even though his business hours had ended before I even walked in the door, he offered to repair my vehicle that night, the next morning at the latest. He drove to an auto parts store several

The condition of the old family cemeteries in the [local town] are a disgrace to the early settlers and their families who made the town what it is today. The pioneer cemetery across the street from my house has been mowed but only twice this year, and the second time they mowed they didn't even trim around the headstones. Another of the

towns away just to get the necessary part for my vehicle more quickly. When an issue arose, he was still there when I called, thinking I would leave a message, at 10:30 at night! Mike's kindness and his willingness to go above and beyond have earned both my gratitude and my future business. Thank you, GearHeadz! We'd like to thank everyone who supported the 26th annual St. Agnes School Golf Classic in Memory of Michael B. Hayes. This is a great celebration of our wonderful St. Agnes School and Genesee Valley community and a fond remembrance of our dear friend and brother Michael, and

we thank the players, guests, volunteers, the local businesses and patrons and the staff at Livingston Country Club and the Oaks for making our tournament a success! In today's day and age, we know your time and money is asked for a lot, and we want everyone know we sincerely appreciate your support. Thank you! Just wanted to say I appreciate people who pick up after their doggies and throw their baggies into any outdoor trash receptacles or toss them at home. You are doing a great job helping keep your area clean.

cemeteries had a large tree fall last year. All that was done was cut up the tree and leave it where it lays to this day. A few years ago, a lot of time and effort was put into fixing, straightening, and cleaning the stones in these cemeteries and cleaning the cemeteries in general. The surrounding towns do an excellent job of maintaining their cemeteries, why can't our town do the same? The [local town] deserves better.

delightful cheery flowers were mowed clear cut to the ground at their peak. Why? It doesn’t make any sense! They weren’t trees that we have been told must be taken down to “secure the banks of the canal” These were delicate plants that brought much joy and delight to the walkers and bikers on the Path. Not to mention the good they do in attracting bees. NYS Canal Authorities, please leave the wildflowers alone! Keep the mowers in the shop!

My husband and I walk the Canal Path in our Village every day. Lately, we have been in awe of the beauty and rich display of wildflowers of every color, size, scent and type. Absolutely gorgeous! “Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as these.” A splendid display! Then the State came through. These

Those little rascals sure can push buttons. But the thing is that if you've got buttons then they're bound to get pushed. Why get angry? They're the children; we're the adults, aren't we? Let’s try harder to NOT let others decide the kind of people we're going to be, especially when the other people are children.

A huge thank you to those who helped me retrieve my dog who escaped from his harness while on a walk in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood on July 7. I didn’t get your names—a family in a van and a man in a white SUV—I’m so grateful for all of your help. Thank you so much!

Once again, venturing thru [local town] risks our personal safety because some people don't follow right-of-way traffic regulations - the Monument at the center of town is a TRAFFIC CIRCLE & ALL FOUR routes entering said traffic circle are governed by YIELD signs, giving vehicles already proceeding within the clearly painted lane of the traffic circle the RIGHT-OFWAY... more than one vehicle can travel within the circle at the same time as long as a vehicle entering the circle DOES NOT infringe on the forward progress of any vehicle already within the traffic circle (a.k.a.; Right-of-Way) - The YIELD signs are large, bright, and clearly posted - if you don't understand traffic regulations: ask our local LEO to explain how it works before your severely injure yourself and/or others!! TNX!

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.
