HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. W hen that occurs, homeow ners instinctively turn up the thermostat in w inter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeow ners w ill run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable w hen hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorw ays and w indow s to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas w here you feel air infiltrating your home, w hich w ill save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.

Safety renovations for seniors’ homes Feeling safe and secure at home is a priority for any homeowner. But safety is of particular concern for aging men and women who are at greater risk of being involved in accidents at home than younger men and women. Harvard Health Publishing says that accidents at home are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. The chances for fatalities increases as one ages, and by age 75 and older, men and women are almost four times as likely to die in a home accident as people a decade younger. As people age, their balance, eyesight and general physical abilities can begin to diminish. Furthermore, a fall or incident that may only bruise a younger individual can cause more serious breaks or damage for seniors, resulting in potentially lengthy recovery times. The Home Care Assistance organization says that one million elderly people are admitted to the emergency room for injuries every year. People concerned about the safety of their homes or the homes of their aging loved ones can retrofit such properties to make them safer. Falls According to The Senior Social Club, which offers care and community services to seniors, falls are the most common accidents affecting seniors. One out of every three seniors aged 65 and older falls at least once a year. In addition to working with doctors to improve mobility and modify medications that may cause unsteadiness, changes around the home can help. Grab bars placed in bathrooms and high-traffic areas can help seniors stay more stable when changing from sitting to standing positions.
HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

Potential tripping hazards should be assessed. Area rugs without nonskid backings, clutter on floors, extension cords that extend into walking areas, and uneven flooring pose tripping hazards. Anti-slip coatings can be added to floors to reduce the risk of tripping. Poorly lit staircases and entryways also can contribute to falls. Consider the installation of motion-activated lighting so that dim areas can be automatically brightened when necessary. A nightlight or LED lights placed near molding can help guide seniors to the bathroom during midnight visits. Physical limitations Arthritis can impede seniors’ ability to turn on and off appliances, water faucets or handle certain kitchen tools. Kitchen and bathroom modifications can include the installation of ergonomic and user-friendly handles and spigots. Task lighting can make it easier to prepare meals, and appliances that automatically turn off after a certain period of time can be a safety feature for forgetful individuals. Reorganize kitchen cabinets to make commonly used items as accessible as possible. Smart Homes Friends or family members can have greater control over seniors’ homes by installing smart home systems. This way they can remotely adjust thermostats, control lights, view cameras, engage locks or alarm systems, and much more without having to be at the home. This can allow seniors to maintain their independence while offering peace of mind to their loved ones. Certain home modifications can reduce seniors’ injury risk.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2018
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Non-Stop Music Only He Can Hear --DEAR DR. ROACH: I hear music playing in my head at all times. I can’t stop it, even if I’m reading, having a conversation or being active. It’s there when I wake up in the night or in the morning. Even if I consciously stop it and try to hear only the ambient sounds around me, the music always comes back. Is this indicative of any major problems? I am a very healthy 64year-old male, and this is annoying. It has been going on for most of my life. I wonder if a psychiatrist could help. The only prescription I take is zolpidem for sleep, but I would consider any meds that would help stop this. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are several medical reasons to have music in your head. One is called “musical ear syndrome,” which is a type of hallucination most commonly associated with hearing loss. Another is associated with psychiatric disease, especially obsessivecompulsive disorder, but also with schizophrenia or mood disorders. However, my experience is that there are many, many normal people with no psychiatric illness who have music playing in their head almost all the time or all the time. Many people have had a song stuck in their head (often called an “earworm”), but a few people have this continuously. I had one patient in whom this was a major source of distress, and in that case, it appeared to be related to the use of an antidepressant. Solving anagrams and reading are supposed to help, but in your case I am almost sure that would be temporary. Sometimes playing the music that is in your head can stop it. There are a few case reports of treatment with medication (such as carbamazepine) being effective, but sometimes reassurance that this is almost normal makes it easier to deal with. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts. A recent MRI scan showed that they are less than 2 cm and have been stable for a year. My doctor tells me these are benign and don’t need any more follow-up. Could these cysts become cancerous later on? -- K. ANSWER: The medical term “cyst” means any fluid-filled, walled structure. They can occur in practically any anatomic location you can think of. In the pancreas, there are several types of cysts, as well as pseudocysts (fluid collections, usually as a result of pancreatitis, that develop a wall after some weeks), and cystic neoplasms, which have the potential to become cancerous. You didn’t tell me how you were diagnosed. Very often, these are found incidentally when a CT scan is obtained for some other reason. In this case, when there are no symptoms present, the only concern is whether they can grow and cause symptoms later on, or worse yet, could become cancerous. Since pancreatic cancer is justifiably feared, I understand your reasons for asking the question. Fortunately, I agree with your doctor completely. The likelihood of a small cyst (your largest cyst is 1.4 cm) being cancer is less than 5 percent. Since it hasn’t changed in a year of follow-up, your risk for cancer is very, very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Autumn Jeffery of Caledonia, NY as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Jeffery’s project was to build two Little Free Libraries to support the community, which has insufficient access to a public library. Caledonia Library has limited hours and the nearby town of York does not have a public library at all. Jeffery researched the project and collected donations of building materials and books, as well as met with local businesses to find a location to put Little Free Library locations. Jeffery sorted the donated books, built and assembled the libraries herself, installing one at the Cal-Mum Elementary School and the other at the York Elementary School where she gave a speech about citizenship. Jeffery stated, “I am proud to be a Gold Award Girl Scout. But to me, the real reward in all of this is that I have made a positive impact in my community and I have helped others.” Jeffery has been a Girl Scout for 13 years. She will receive her Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, at the Gold Award Ceremony in June. The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something that a girl can be passionate about – in thought, deed, and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be ongoing or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind
2018 Gold Award Girl Scout Autumn Jeffery of Caledonia
each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project. The Girl Scout submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause they are addressing. To learn more about the Girl Scouts of Western New York please visit gswny.org.

HOW TO EASE INTO EXERCISING
18
Opening Sunday, January 28th, 2018
Men and women who resolve to get healthy often benefit by combining a healthy diet with regular exercise. Making such adjustments can be challenging, especially as men and women accustomed to sedentary lifestyles begin exercise regimens. Whether they’re fitness novices or returning to exercise after a long layoff, men and women can employ various strategies to make that transition go smoothly. Work with a trainer. Many fitness facilities offer a handful of free personal training sessions to new members upon enrollment. Take advantage of such offers, as trainers can devise workout routines for people of various abilities. Trainers also can instruct new members how to use machines and help ensure they’re following proper form so they can avoid injury. If necessary, continue working with trainers after making use of complementary sessions. Personal training sessions typically can be purchased in batches, and men and women can continue working with trainers until they’re comfortable working out on their own. Embrace low-intensity exercises. Even men and women who were once accomplished athletes must take it slow when beginning an exercise regimen after a long layoff. Initial low-intensity exercise sessions might feel ineffective and seemingly produce few results. But early on, the goal is to simply get the body acclimated to physical activity. As their bodies adjust, men and women can begin to make their workouts more intense. Focus on flexibility. Sedentary bodies likely lack the flexibility of bodies more accustomed to exercise. Men and women who are becoming more physically active must include stretching in their workouts and cease exercising if they feel something tweak or suspect they have pulled a muscle. Take days off. As men and women begin to see their work in the gym pay off, they may be tempted to push themselves hard, working out several days in a row without taking time off. But rest is an important component of an effective workout. Days off help the body repair itself and recover from vigorous activity. Exercising for the first time or after a long layoff requires patience. But as men and women grow more acclimated to physical activity, they will begin to see the fruits of their labors.

To the students and parents of Attica bus 111, Thank you for the cards and gifts for Christmas. The homemade chocolate covered pretzels are very good. Thank you. Mr. Jeff Thank you so much to the Livonia Fire Department for pumping out my flooded cellar and to the Volunteer Ambulance crew who took my 18 month old grandson to the hospital when he had a serious case of croup. You saved his life. We in Livonia are so fortunate to have such great people who serve in our community, especially the firefighters and ambulance crews. Keep up the good work and a big THANK YOU! I want to thank the couple who helped me and the 3 kids I had in my vehicle when I accidentally crashed my car on Union Street in
Ogden. You stopped to see if we were all ok and allowed the kids and me to sit in your blue Jeep in the heat to stay warm. I really appreciate your help and your kind hearts to allow us to stay warm on this bitter cold day on New Year’s Eve. I wish I received your names and address to thank you personally. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

It is only through your generosity that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special I want to give a huge thank you thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are to the person or persons that found my Discover credit card in blessed to live in such a caring community. the Aldi's parking lot on 12/27/ 17. I almost had a heart attack when I couldn't find it when I went to Walmart. I drove back to Aldi's and low and behold someone had found it. I will never put it in my pocket again. I wish you the best of 2018, I'm so grateful. room to ease my car backwards and across the street to a parking lot. He held my arm as we carefully crossed the slippery road to his car, and then drove me to my appointment a few blocks away! God is great--and so were you, Chris!
Slipping and sliding, unable to get my car under control to make it up the icy incline on Gravel Road in W. Webster, several drivers sat waiting too close behind me or passed by as the light turned green a few times. Feeling hopeless and helpless being late for an appointment, my prayers were answered with the The Teresa House Board of arrival of an angel who gave his Directors, Staff and Volunteers name as Chris Brown. elsewhere should be built instead of having this in a residential area? To the Bus Driver responding to the post about lights flashing confusion: I think you misread my post. I wasn't speeding up to the bus. I was slowing down waiting for the reds to come on. I was confused and not sure what to do as they did not come on until I was at the front fender of the bus. I am asking that bus drivers don't Is there anyone within earshot of wait until the last second to turn the [local] shooting range that is on the reds. And I was disgusted disturbed by the daily shooting? that the blame was then put on Does everyone realize that this type me when they beeped the horn at of noise pollution MUST be me. They did not use that horn to disclosed when selling your house or warn the students as they were you could be liable? Maybe after dropping off kids as the bus was decades of use, an indoor facility on not even stopped yet. And I never the [local college] campus or said anything about my "precious"
time. I was not in a hurry, only confused. Next time I'll stop at the yellow lights....only to get rearended I'm sure. To the older "gentleman" whom we were unfortunate enough to sit by at our favorite restaurant. Not everyone appreciates hearing how you "severed the aorta" of a deer you shot from your tree stand. My wife and I had to sit there and listen as you described what was evidently a thrilling experience for you, all the while eating our vegetarian lunch that is usually a highlight of our week. I would expect this behavior from a twenties-something guy in [a fast food restaurant]--not a senior citizen in a sit-down establishment, where I assure you
that no one wants to hear about you bagging a trophy buck. Since you were the only one talking at your table, I can only assume that even your family was annoyed. Have a little class, hit the fast food joint, or better yet, stay home and eat by yourself. It is absolutely incredulous that if someone were to be caught by a police officer throwing a candy wrapper out the car window that they would be subject to a $350 fine in New York State, yet people in a supposedly upscale neighborhood in this town routinely place loose trash and recyclables out in 30 MPH winds to turn their neighborhood into a ‘royal’ mess. Is there no town ordinance that can address this issue?

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
