ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

Bodybuilder Son Takes Steroids --DEAR DR. ROACH: My 23-year-old son is a bodybuilder, and much to my dismay, he takes steroids. I know he takes testosterone, and I don’t know what else. How will this affect him? -- Anon. ANSWER: Testosterone has many bad long-term effects, and he really should stop it. As a resident, I took care of a seemingly very healthy, very muscular 30-year-old man with terrible heart failure due to a heart attack. Many similar reports have led to suspicion that steroids taken for bodybuilding increase risk of heart attack and even sudden death. There appear to be many other long-term effects, including neuropsychiatric effects of anger and aggressive behavior. They also may reduce sperm count and affect fertility. I don’t know what else he may be taking, but I would strongly urge him to evaluate all supplements carefully. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a healthy female until I had an injury to my back. I experience pain and tingling in my right side, going down the back of my right leg. Sitting is especially painful, as is standing in one place for too long. Now the pain has started in my left side also. I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, physical therapy, epidural shots and pain pills. I also had two laminectomies (decompression surgery on the spinal canal) on L4/L5 last year, with no relief from the pain. Upon seeing another neurosurgeon, I have been told that I have some large Tarlov cysts (1 cm). There does not seem to be a great amount of information about these on the internet, plus I am not sure what information out there is accurate. One doctor on the internet is all about having surgery on them. The neurosurgeon I am seeing does not want to do surgery just yet. He says that surgery does not always bring about pain relief. Can you share some information about these Tarlov cysts and what can be done for the continued back and leg pain? Dealing with this for several years has caused me much emotional distress and depression. -- F.H. ANSWER: Tarlov cysts, also called perineurial cysts, occur along the lining of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In one study, in 500 people with MRI scans, 23 had Tarlov cysts, but only five had any symptoms from them. In this study, the cysts were drained by a needle, which relieved the pain, although the pain usually came back as the cysts refilled with fluid. I agree with your neurosurgeon that surgery on these does not guarantee success. Since you have had two surgeries and multiple types of therapies that haven’t worked, I can understand your frustration. It might be worth talking to the neurosurgeon about a trial of draining the cysts to see if that helps the symptoms. The booklet on back problems gives an overview of the causes and treatments for the most-common back maladies. Have you paid attention to the amazingly beautiful flowers down Main St. in Canandaigua? The garden carts in Bloomfield? Thank you to the workers/volunteers who have kept all the flowers watered and cared for this summer. You are appreciated! Please take the time, take your children or grandchildren to visit the elderly and show them love and that someone cares. Talk to them about their professions, and their lives. know? The cars parked partially on my lawn were a dead giveaway. I pulled up and asked the lady with the baby, can you not park on my lawn? Well now my neighbor claims they have to move, because they have neighbor problems. Problems like, the dog barking, putting your overflowing tote to the road on Friday for Tuesday pick up so it leaves a mess all over? Problems like not mowing by your tree out front that still has Christmas lights on it? Problems like the cat spraying the garage and taking a dump in the flower bed? Yes that is a neighbor problem. Do you need boxes for your move or a good Realtor? Let me know! I would love to help you out so I don't have a neighbor problem.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty might upset some people, but you inevitably win more admirers for having the courage to tell the truth when others are more likely to scramble for cover. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A trusted colleague sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A welcome piece of good news helps clear the air in a family situation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new opportunity sounds promising. But watch out for any conditions that might be attached. Before making a decision, ask that each one be explained in detail. Brockport Museum is a Treasure Trove of Local History␣ Emily L. Knapp Museum & Library of Local History, located at 49 State Street in the Village of Brockport, is a historical treasure not only due to the fact that it has many valuable and unique finds but also because many of its valuables are still being discovered just like a buried treasure. The museum, which comprises the top two floors of the home, has been referred to as a “little attic of a place.” It that is true, this “attic,” made up of 17 rooms, is larger than many people’s entire homes! This home, built by Pelatiah Rogers in 1824, was purchased by William Seymour in 1836 and remained in the Seymour Family until it was gifted to the town in 1932 and accepted in 1936. Sue Savard, the extraordinary, knowledgeable and largely self-taught museum curator, explained that this home was originally donated as a library and was solely the Seymour Library until a Seymour second cousin, Helen Hastings, convinced the town to open a museum on the second floor. Helen Hastings was also a prolific local artist, and her works would provide some jewels of their own. Once Ms. Hastings was successful in establishing a museum on the second floor of the Seymour House, she convinced many of her friends and acquaintances to donate to it. Unfortunately, many of these items have proved something of a challenging mystery for present day museum volunteers as there was no record of donations, and many of the donated items were also not labeled or otherwise identified. Nevertheless, the amiable and energetic Ms. Savard, along with the several faithful volunteers with whom she works, have made remarkable progress in identifying and cataloguing several valuable collections and individual pieces. Presently, the second floor boasts such offerings as restored maps from previous centuries, a hall of pictures, many of which have been “adopted” and properly framed, a working Victrola and a complete dentist office set from the 1930s. Several files full of documents are now organized and useful for genealogical research, a new development, since only six years ago, documents were located randomly around the museum. Now, the only things randomly placed are pieces out of
time and mystery artifacts; however, these are deliberate and can be found in each room. Also housed on the second floor are artifacts from the home of Mary Jane Holmes, a nationally-famous, 1800s writer. Every space is bursting with historically fascinating finds, and there is much more that has not been catalogued and displayed yet. The third and final floor of this magnificent home contains a beautiful collection of small glassfronted “rooms,” each set up as a different business that once thrived in Brockport, such as a hardware store and a millinery. More “rooms” are planned. An adjacent room contains a collection of antique farming implements. There are a great many more items and collections to be examined and appreciated. Loyal volunteers continue to arrange and catalogue artifacts and are currently creating a full room display of Helen Hastings’ art. Says Ms. Savard, this valuable collection, a treasure of national import, was discovered when she at last opened a trunk, marked with Helen Hastings’ name, which was tucked away in the attic. The gallery of Hastings’ work is even now underway with prints set to rotate routinely as Hastings was a prolific artist. The museum’s present and future displays make it a worthwhile and enjoyable stop in Brockport. For more information, visit the museum at 49 State Street in Brockport or its website at␣https:// knappmuseum.wordpress.com. Live comfortably on less Many people look toward retirement with mixed feelings. There is the anticipation and excitement of no longer having to stick to a set schedule. However, there may be some trepidation about living without a steady income. Bloomberg financial experts found the number of Americans aged 65 and older without a disability that weren’t in the labor force rose to 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016. This has become a longstanding trend of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce and entering retirement. Yet, a Statistics Canada study of people between the ages 60 and 64 who had left long-term employment found 43 percent of them were working again, most within a year of leaving their job. Although boredom may have compelled many of those people to reenter the workforce, some may have started working again to make ends meet. Researchers found the higher the earnings in one’s late 40s, the more likely a retiree is to go back to work. While retirees may need to alter their spending habits, it is possible to live happily on less. Here are some ways to do just that. • Accurately assess home expenses. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling says the cost of home-related expenses accounts for roughly 45 percent of spending for retirees. Individuals can add up exactly how much their homes are costing them and then decide if downsizing is a practical solution. Downsizing has a host of benefits, not the least of which is reducing housing-related expenses. • Invest in health care. Unexpected health care costs can quickly deplete individuals’ finances. That’s why it is essential to have a solid insurance plan in place. Health care planning also may include thinking ahead to long-term care, such as assisted living and nursing homes. One may have to make concessions elsewhere, but investing in health care can assuage concerns men and women might have about the cost of living in their golden years.
• Use alternative transportation. Cars can be expensive. A budget-friendly alternative to driving is to use public transportation or transportation services provided to seniors free or for nominal fees. • Take advantage of senior discounts. Many restaurants, stores and service centers offer discounts to seniors. The starting age for discounts may vary from store to store, so always ask before cashing out. • Shop for food differently. Bulk buys may have been appropriate for men and women when there were kids running around, but empty-nesters can cut back on food expenses. Shopping sales and making more meals at home can help seniors save money. The market research firm NPD Group found that in-home meals cost roughly one-third of what it costs to eat the same food at a restaurant. Save dining out for special occasions. Retirees can make changes to save money without negatively affecting their quality of life.

HELP TEENS LEARN DRIVING (NAPSI)—When it’s time for your teens to get their learner’s permits and driver’s licenses, here’s a hint on how you can help: Don’t teach them yourself. Leave that to the professionals. How Teens Can Learn This is made easier with an online driver’s test program. It uses accurate, up-to-date questions based on the official state DMV handbook and traffic laws. The questions are often identical to those on the official driver’s license test. As a result, aspiring drivers who take the practice tests and read the DMV manual are 73 percent more likely to pass the official test than those who study the manual alone. The program is called Driving-Tests.org and can be found at https://driving-tests.org. What You Can Do One good thing you can do as a parent is create a parent-driver contract. It helps form an open line of communication about the importance of safety and the expectations that come with the new and profound responsibility of driving. Among other things, the young driver promises to follow all traffic and safety rules, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs or ride with any driver who is, and avoid distracted driving such as texting or talking on the phone while driving.

STUDY WHAT YOU LOVE—ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS THE PATH TO SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT (NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch.
