Asking for an explanation could help uncover the reason for this sudden turn of events. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your busy schedule has drawn down much of your energy levels. Restore them by spending a wellearned time out enjoying the arts -perhaps with that special someone. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Make that presentation with confidence. Remember: When you show you believe in yourself, it helps persuade others that you truly know what you’re doing. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you usually prefer doing things on your own, a group effort might be advisable at this time. Try to keep an open mind about suggestions from colleagues. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) This could be a good time to reassess some of your recent decisions and see if any adjustments should be made based on facts that you might have just uncovered. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An emotionally charged situation creates uncertainty about the future of your relationship. Best advice: Talk things out while there’s still time to reach a new understanding. BORN THIS WEEK: You tend to act on matters of principle despite what others might advise. Addicted seniors a serious problem: Opioid use among the older population The public is quickly learning that drug abuse goes beyond the illegal substances that are purchased on the street. Abuse of drugs extends to the prescription medications sitting in many medicine cabinets. While teenagers and young adults may be the first to be stereotyped as prescription drug abusers, seniors may have unwittingly become mixed up in one of the most misused prescription classes: opioid pain relievers. The problem of opioid abuse has been a growing issue for years. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from substance abuse of opioid pain relievers. Older patients are increasingly and repeatedly prescribed opioids to address chronic pain from arthritis, cancer and other problems that become more apparent as people age. Data from U.S. Medicare recipients found that, in 2011, roughly 15 percent of seniors were prescribed an opioid after being discharged from the hospital. When followed up on three months later, 42 percent were still taking the medication. Fast forward to 2015, and almost one-third of all Medicare patients were prescribed opioid painkillers by their physicians, says AARP. The Canadian Institute for Health Information says adults between the ages of 45 and 64 and seniors age 65 and older had the highest rates of hospitalizations due to opioid poisoning over the past 10 years. AARP also indicates nearly three million Americans age 50 or older have started to take painkillers for reasons beyond what their doctors prescribed. Experts from the Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing warn that dependence on opioids can set in after just a few days. Discomfort and side effects can occur when the pills are stopped. Opioids can decrease pain at first, but many people find they can be less effective over time. As a result, patients need to take greater amounts. Although many people can take opioids in small doses for short periods of time without problems, many find

themselves overcome by a troubling addiction. Some doctors prefer not to use opioids as a first line of treatment for chronic pain. Another possible risk of opioids among seniors is that the medication can cause disorientation that may lead to falls and fractures. The senior care resource A Place for Mom also says that prescription narcotics may increase risk of respiratory arrest. What’s more, an older body may not absorb and filter medicines as effectively as younger bodies can. This means that older adults might become addicted to or have side effects from a prescription drug at a lower dose. Seniors concerned about opioids can discuss other options with their doctors, such as nonopioid medications and alternative therapies for pain management, like massage or acupuncture. If opioids are prescribed, ask for the lowest dose and don’t exceed the time frame for taking the medicine. Only take the pills when absolutely necessary, and never mix opioids with alcohol or other substances.
LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 44-year-old man with chronic headaches and migraines. Should I worry about the long-term effects of taking an NSAID (such as diclofenac) at least once a week? -- G.W. ANSWER: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are among the most commonly taken classes of drugs in the world, with 17 million Americans alone taking them daily. Although these drugs are generally safe, any medication has the potential for side effects. Typically, the higher the dose and the more frequently it is taken, the increased risk of side effects. So, a once-aweek dose would be expected to have a low side effect risk. Adverse effects from this class are among the most frequently seen in clinical medicine. Although they can affect multiple systems, let me briefly go over the side effects of NSAIDs on the GI tract, kidneys and heart. NSAIDs might affect the stomach, and although we think of ulcers, stomach pain without ulcers is more common. Ulcers happen most often in people who take higher doses for long periods of time. A history of ulcers, older age and use of other medications (steroids, warfarin, antiplatelet drugs like clopidogrel, or Plavix) increase the risk of ulcers and bleeding. NSAIDs also might affect the small bowel and colon, causing bleeding and diarrhea, among other symptoms. Again, these are most common in high doses for extended periods. NSAIDs can affect the kidneys, causing both acute and chronic kidney failure, but only in a few percent of people. Periodic blood and urine examination is appropriate for people who are on long-term NSAIDs. The risk of heart disease among people who use NSAIDs regularly is increased, but in people without known heart disease, the risk is small -- about one bad event, such as heart attack, stroke or episode of heart failure, per thousand people taking the medication for a year. I would advise you that the risk of any of these side effects is unlikely in someone taking the drug only once a week, but people who take these drugs every day should know about the potential harms. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: When I was 64, a cyst was found in my bladder. When the cyst was removed, it was found to be cancerous. My urologist wants me to continue to have an annual cystoscopy, which I do. I’m now 76 and in good health. Do you feel the annual cystoscopy is still necessary? -- C.K. ANSWER: Now that more people have had successful treatment of cancer, we are starting to learn about the risks they face in subsequent years. The risk of another cancer is generally higher, but it’s the exact form of cancer that determines how much risk there is, and consequently, how aggressive follow-up must be. In the case of bladder cancer, I have read some studies that the risk is quite small after five years. However, the American Urologic Association has clear guidelines: Because of the increased risk for recurrence, it recommends annual cystoscopy indefinitely. Cystoscopy is a pretty safe procedure, so I think your urologist’s recommendation is reasonable. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum Hosts the Lois McClure

Sudoku
␣ The Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum, which last Saturday hosted GlassBarge from the Corning Museum of Glass, also played host to the 1820s reproduction lake boat, the␣Lois McClure.␣This reproduction was based primarily on surveys of two shipwrecks. Aboard the␣Lois McClure␣was nautical archeologist and captain of the tugboat␣C. L. Churchill, Captain Art Cohn. Unexpectedly, the␣Lois McClure␣had sail rigging. When asked about this unusual feature, Captain Art Cohn explained why this was so. Most canal vessels of the time were strictly barges, dependent on steam boats when not on the canal. Several of these boats were often strung together with lines and towed by a tugboat. These boats would pay an expensive fee for this service. ␣People began to realize that it might be to their advantage to have their canal vessels equipped with sails and rigging so that when they were on open waters, such as the Finger Lakes, rather than the canals, they could sail their boats and not be dependent on tugboats for a tow. This gave rise to a new type of “First Class Lake Boats,” according to Cohn. Captain Art Cohn further explained that we are just starting to learn more and more about these boats as well as other pieces of nautical history from the Great Lakes and Finger Lakes and the surrounding regions. He, along with many others, is advocating a systematic survey of the Finger Lakes to identify and study shipwrecks and requesting their preservation as well as reasonable access to these shipwrecks, hopefully as underwater parks. Captain Art Cohn and his colleagues are seeking help from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) with this important project to catalogue and
preserve lake culture. Captain Art Cohn shared that finding the shipwrecks is the easy part. Over 300 shipwrecks were discovered during a survey of Lake Champlain alone! It is developing management strategies for their preservation and public value that is the challenge. Several local museums are contributing to this project in hopes of forwarding ongoing exploration in a quest for greater understanding. One such piece of Canal history, albeit above water, is the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum. Built 111 years ago in 1907, the building functioned as a trolley depot from 19081931 with stops in Rochester, Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Lockport. The building was a private home for many years, and finally it was the residence of a woman who owned the Ogden Phone Company, now Frontier. She sold it to the town for $1 to be used for the community. The building, which had been moved many, many years earlier, was finally relocated as closely as possible to its original site in 2005. Restoration of the depot took two years and about 80,000 volunteer hours, and the museum finally opened to the public in 2007. Now, over halfway through its 11th␣season, the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum continues to find many ways of fulfilling its purpose of serving the community. Not only does it host special events like GlassBarge and special guests like the␣Lois McClure,␣but it also welcomes boats traveling the canal to stay at its dock for up to two nights, free of charge. The museum premises provides bathrooms, showers, electricity and potable water to these boats free of charge, as well. Museum Director Simon Devenish promises more events to come in the months ahead, and that’s good news on or off the water.

Thank you Genesee Valley Penny Saver for being such a great partner and great paper in all the communities you serve. Mark Farruggia President of Friends & Families of Muscular Disorders Foundation The beauty of country living is common-sense thinking, respect for the natural world and defense of the institutions of democracy. Common-sense is the application of basic logic to obvious facts in making decisions; respect for nature requires application of the best scientific knowledge to
I recently took my dog to the [Local] Vet Clinic in [local town] for a tooth that fell out. I wanted to get an antibiotic for him. During the visit no gloves, creams, ointments, needles, paper products, or peanut butter was used. No medical waste was generated at this apt. My bill however had a 3.50 fee for medical waste. I was told this is an automatic fee that OSHA is
preserve the integrity of our air, water and soil; the institutions of democracy include the independent branches of government, and the Bill of Rights: a free and independent press (media) to serve as watchdog or whistle blower of corruption, the right to form armed militias to defend the ‘people’ against abuses of power, prevention of interference of religion with government policy and vice versa, equal treatment and opportunity for ALL people and respect for the spirit of law (applied to leaders also).
Thank you to Julie of Julie's Floral! Once again, your 1st day of school floral arrangements were awesome. What a wonderful surprise! We appreciate your thoughtfulness so very much.
now charging. I paid the bill with cash. Went home and got online with OSHA Chat and they said no - this is not a new regulation from them. They said the Vet Clinic has to pay fees and they are pushing it off on the clients whether there was waste or not, to cover their costs. With the fees they charge us now, I think this is so unjust. We are trying to make ends meet as it is and keep our pets healthy and happy. So not right! To our neighbors who live across the street from us who feel the need to give my younger sister the middle finger whenever you see her outside, what kind of message are you sending to your young children who are with you when you do it? If you even bothered to take the time to get to know her, you would have found out that she is autistic and doesn’t know what she did wrong
to deserve you flipping her off whenever you see her. She is an amazing girl who is friendly and says hi to everyone and waves to people as they walk by. So the next time you see her and she waves at you, be a decent person and wave back; you will make her happy and you just might make yourself happy as well; besides, if you don’t want to be civil to your neighbors, maybe you shouldn’t have moved into the village. Congratulations to the group(s) who've succeeded in ruining the [local] Boardwalk for everyone. Seems it became 'Party Central' for a select few and they chose to throw their empty beer bottles, cans, liquor and soda bottles directly into the watershed rather than disposing of them responsibly. When the trash accumulation was not enough of a thrill, they elected to kick out the safety slats on the walkway railing,
I just want to say that the wall in Geneseo looks really great! There is still more to do but what has been done so far, it really looks nice. I know it is hard work and look forward to seeing more of it being completed as time goes on. Eagle Scout Project Support I would like to thank everyone who has supported me through
my recent project that benefited the Habitat for Humanity. This includes the individuals who donated to my project, the Avon Rotary also providing funding, and Avon Lumber and Avon Hardware for providing materials for my project.
thus, forcing Village officials to place a steel barricade with a 'NO TRESPASSING' sign across the entry way to the platform. Ironic isn't it? The vandals no longer have access either. Don't know what it will cost to repair, or if it ever will be repaired but, I DO know, that it was a mindless act. I hope this will not be their greatest life accomplishment. The road crews posted construction signs on [local road] from [local town] to [local town] months ago but no work has been started. The road is in despicable condition!! Are they just teasing us with the signs, or are they actually going to repair the road? It's in such bad shape that it is useless getting an alignment done, and it is ruining my tires. Come on [local county], get to work and replace this disgraceful highway!!
