VISUALLY IMPAIRED READER INSPIRES AUTHOR (NAPSI)—Four years ago, bestselling author Mary Jane Clark spoke at the Friends of the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped’s Fall Festival. There, she met Ottilie Lucas, a former rehabilitation teacher for people with macular degeneration and other disabilities who is visually impaired herself. After the festival, “we continued our correspondence and one thing led to another,” Lucas says of Clark. “She decided to include a character in her next book with macular degeneration.” And so was born Terri Donovan, introduced in the first book in Clark’s Wedding Cake Mysteries series, 2011’s “To Have and to Kill.” “Mary Jane asked me to give her ways to identify symptoms that a person may be experiencing macular degeneration,” Lucas says. These include blurred vision and difficulty discerning the intensity of colors—symptoms shared by Terri Donovan, who runs a bakery and is the mother of the protagonist of Clark’s series, struggling actress Piper Donovan.

Lucas, who was born with retinitis pigmentosa, became a patron of the New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC) in 1966. TBBC is among more than 100 libraries across the United States affiliated with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress. NLS oversees a free reading program for U.S. residents and citizens living abroad who are blind, have low vision, or cannot hold a book because of a physical disability. NLS patrons may choose from tens of thousands of books and dozens of magazines in audio and braille-including mysteries such as Mary Jane Clark’s. NLS also loans the portable playback equipment needed to read its audiobooks. Patrons may access books online through the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service. Lucas has been married 49 years and has been on more than 20 ocean cruises. “Ottilie is such an inspiration,” Clark says. “She helped me so much in the creation of Terri Donovan—a mother who faces macular degeneration head-on, who doesn’t feel sorry for herself and is determined to adapt to the challenges she faces. I wish I were as brave as Terri and Ottilie!” To learn more about how the NLS program can help you, a loved one or a friend, go online to www.loc.gov/nls or call 1-888-NLS-READ.

Different generations can learn and benefit from one another In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Finding renewed vigor Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another. Planning for the future Younger generations may not understand the concept of “hard times” or “doing without” like a person who has lived through various ups and downs. Passing along advice about economic cycles, saving for the future and maintaining stability is one area of expertise at which many seniors excel. Practicing interpersonal skills All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become
stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation. Learning new technology Younger generations can impart knowledge of technological devices to older adults. People with skills are usually happy to share their knowledge. Even if seniors aren’t ready to purchase tablets or smartphones, they may be excited to have their grandchildren teach them about the latest gadgets. Providing sense of purpose Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the liklihood of isolation and depression in older adults. And younger generations can discover the benefits of personal social interaction rather than communicating exclusively through social media apps. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know your opinion about whether it is OK to crush up different psychiatric medications and put them in a small container of water to drink. This doesn’t seem very safe to me, but I’d like an expert opinion. -- Anon. ANSWER: I’ll give you my answer, and also tell you where to find an expert opinion. My answer is that many people have trouble swallowing pills, and that most pills can be crushed and taken with water or mixed in with food. Your local pharmacy sells pill crushers, or you can get a mortar and pestle. While you are at the pharmacy, ask your pharmacist. He or she can look at your medications and tell you whether it is safe for you to crush your particular medications. Slow-release medications, of which there are many, should not be crushed. Often, the bottle will tell you, but ask your pharmacist for the expert opinion. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts about the MiraDRY procedure to get rid of underarm sweat? Is it safe not to have sweat under the arms? -- S.J. ANSWER: MiraDRY is the brand name of a microwave device designed to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is not normal underarm sweating, but a rare condition of abnormal, drenching sweat that greatly interferes with social activities. It is currently used only for underarms -- not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis. According to several published papers, the microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness. This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. I also found a very helpful website at www.sweathelp.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What causes foot drop? Is there any cure for it? -- B.H. ANSWER: Foot drop is most commonly caused by damage to the peroneal nerve, which wraps around the fibula, one of the two bones of the leg (anatomically, only the lower leg is called the leg, as opposed to the thigh). The nerve can be damaged from trauma, such as during surgery or prolonged hospitalization. Leg casts and prolonged positioning with stress on the nerve, such as squatting, also can damage the nerve. Most people describe numbness but not pain, and the dropped foot can cause people to trip, so people with this condition learn to flex the hip to lift the thigh up higher. The diagnosis can be confirmed by electrical studies of the nerves. Treatment usually is to prevent further damage, with a splint to keep the foot flexed upward. A physical therapist can prescribe helpful exercises. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. To the family who has the cute little produce stand in the Village - we love having the convenient, friendly option to buy from you. Everything has been fresh and delicious. Thank you!
I'd like to thank GVPS for the Give and Take Column as nearly 30 people called me in response to the free garden plants ad I posted. I was unable to return all the phone calls but would like to thank all who responded to the ad.
Thank you to all our friends, family, co-workers and colleagues who have helped us get ready for “Baby Bedo.” We are truly blessed! -MK and NK
To the lovely person who left a Kitty Mug with a Showering Plant on my doorstep, I love it and I thank you! Nancy D.
On July 31st, I received a special surprise when another customer at Aldi's in Geneseo paid for my groceries. What a thoughtful and generous gesture!

To the farmer who thinks city people should stay in the city and not invade their precious country living I have this to say. You need to follow the same rules and laws that I have to in this state. You're not special. You don't get a pass. I worked all my life, I saved to
build and own property in the country. I paid taxes all my working life. I have never been tax exempt! I was NEVER paid not to work either. So you benefit from me paying taxes, then cry that we should move back into the city. I wasn't given farm property as an inheritance from my parents or grandparents either. Yes, you work and work hard, but so do I. Population is growing, it's a fact, so here's my sarcastic comment back...Either accept that your country is changing or perhaps YOU should move further out to farm. Hey, Smoky the Bear! Why don't you burn your putrid smelling garbage in your
Rescue and Dreamers Closet Consignment Sales for their very much appreciated donations to our sales! Although we’ve had a very dry summer, all the towns have beautiful flowers thanks to the faithful waterers. “In my neck of the woods” the hanging baskets and business’ flowers along Main Street in Livonia are so pretty. Also many thanks to those caring for beds in Vital Park, Long Point Park (and just south of the park) and Mart at Fortune Palace in Lakeville for his lovely garden. P.S. The hanging baskets are nice but I miss the tire planters at Briggs Tire.
fireplace inside your house instead of in your back yard late at night fouling the air of the entire neighborhood? What gives you the right to ruin the air everyone has to breathe? Especially people with asthma or COPD trying to get some fresh air only to encounter remnants of your foul smelling garbage odor that has invaded their open doors and windows and permeated the entire house. I asked the Town Supervisor it if was legal to burn garbage in a back yard. His bizarre answer was 1) open burning of garbage/ trash fires is not allowed, but, 2) burning garbage/trash fires in an urn or container is allowed. Duh? Maybe we will get lucky and it will rain,
As usual, this year’s summer programs for the children at the Livonia Public Library were just wonderful. Seems the adults enjoyed each one as much as the kids! Many thanks to the staff! and Smoky will disappear for a long time. To the person or people who took my 2 year old little girl's backpack in the parking lot of the [local church] on July 4th, I hope you enjoy my 2 year old's things, her baby blanket, her diapers and her tablet. She was asking for her things the rest of the night and will continue to for weeks. You are disgusting, and it is a shame you could not just turn it in to lost and found. She says you stole it, and even she understands you are disgusting and rotten.

IDEAS ON PAPER (NAPSI)—For over 40 years, works by famed sculptor Strong-Cuevas have been acclaimed and enjoyed in major museums and private collections. Now, you can have them at your fingertips. That’s because Abrams Books, the premier art book publisher, has created a lavishly illustrated coffee table sized book of 190 of her color and black-and-white drawings, “Strong-Cuevas Drawings: Ideas on Paper.” All the drawings have been thematically arranged and explore recurring themes of Strong-Cuevas’ art. Strong-Cuevas says her work expresses thoughts about universal consciousness, space and time, and inner mediation. Best known for her sculptures made from bronze, stainless steel and aluminum, StrongCuevas’ art often portrays the human head and plays with scale. Her drawings express the same themes. The book also features a foreword by noted art historian and critic Jan Garden Castro, who has written extensively about Georgia O’Keeffe, Louise Bourgeois, Maya Lin, and numerous others. Also published by Abrams is the critically acclaimed “Strong-Cuevas Sculpture: Premonitions in Retrospect,” featuring photos of her sculpture. Learn More: The book is available at Barnes & Noble and online at bn.com, Amazon.com and www.abramsbooks.com.

Swamp trails and boardwalks run throughout this wetland sanctuary which, contrary to its name, no longer covers 1,000 acres but a slightly more modest 800. Popping up almost out of nowhere on Veterans Park Way in Penfield, New York, this sanctuary announces itself with an unassuming roadside sign. Visitors then travel back along a dirt road to a parking area at the entrance to the trails. At first, the park area is fairly open. A sign in the field areas of the park announces their participation in the “Seneca Park Zoo Butterfly Beltway, a program that increases butterfly habitat and awareness of the importance of butterflies.” A bench underneath an informational shelter arch provides a place to sit as visitors read about the wetland and the Thousand Acre Swamp Sanctuary. As visitors walk down the trail and enter the woods, frogs regularly jump aside into the brush, leaping away from view. The trees are large and beautiful, stretching high like a tall, green canopy. Rushing wind can be heard all along the trails as the trees reach high enough to continually catch passing breezes. Greenery is everywhere, from the grassy paths to the moss-covered boulders and fallen logs to the dense foliage of the treetops. Wooden signs point the way to the several trails that branch off the main trail: the Founders Way. Paths are partially dirt trails and partially boardwalks, allowing for greater access to the varying terrain of the wetland. Finally, along such trails as the Boardwalk Trail, visitors enter forests of cattails. These cattails, standing over six feet in height, rise on either side of the
boardwalk, towering over visitors and creating the feeling of being in the middle of a forest. They press in on either side, and one can reach out and touch a leaf or a cattail easily. Along one boardwalk, there is a nook with a bench, and the feeling is that one has been enveloped by nature. These trails through the marshy areas enable visitors to truly experience a wetland at its core. There are also pond areas to explore. Duck Pond, near the entrance, is a cattail marsh, overgrown during the summer months. Further on, at the north end of the trails, lies Way Pond, the larger pond of the two. Way Pond offers boardwalk trails and a closer look at pond life, attracting ducks, herons, turtles and several other species. There is also no shortage of insect life, and this visitor recommends applying insect repellant when visiting. Even so, the Thousand Acre Swamp Sanctuary is well worth a visit, especially if one would like to experience a wetland from the inside. To see more photos of the Thousand Acre Sanctuary, visit our website at www.gvpennysaver.com. Have a favorite spot we should visit? Let us know at hometown@gvpennysaver.com. H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defensive. Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon find the situation shifting in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting that personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now, before they can create costly delays. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask for -- no, demand -- help with this problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand they show solid proof why they think your ideas won’t work. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause the usually sure-footed Goat some unsettling moments. But keep going. The path ahead gets easier as you move forward. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There also could be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of what’s right can inspire others if you remember not to push too hard to make your case. Moderation works best for you. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

LOAN OFFICER REVEALS SECRET TO A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
Penny Saver Pet of the Week I’m Cookie & I love being adopted! I get a lot of attention and treats! I wag my tail like a whip when I know I’m getting a treat! I was very skinny when I was found but I filled out very well in no time. I have an older sister and a younger brother now. They are great but I still try to sneak their marrow bones when Mom’s not looking! I love to run around the yard with my siblings and who would have known that I was a great swimmer! Can’t wait to go to the lake this summer! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
To sponsor the Pet of the Week, Call 226-8111 or email sales@gvpennysaver.com
(NAPSI)—John and Jennie were renting a small house in Delray Beach, Florida when the perfect house came on the market: only four blocks from their rental home, 3,400 square feet, with five bedrooms and the biggest yard in the neighborhood. An excellent fit for their family of six. John has been a loan officer for 18 years and currently works for US Mortgage. He often advises his clients to consider a conventional mortgage with private mortgage insurance (PMI)—especially if they have a 5 to 10 percent down payment and good credit score. PMI is the private sector’s alternative to the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgage insurance, a government program backed by taxpayers. “I explain how a conventional mortgage with PMI could be their fastest and least expensive route. Many borrowers often think that FHA is their only option,” John said. What John And Jennie Did He followed his own advice and purchased his new home with a 5 percent down payment and a conventional mortgage with PMI. It was the best way to go for his family—but not because they didn’t have enough saved up. Why They Did It “Jennie and I could have put the full 20 percent down on this house. But many years ago, when I was new at this job, I helped a car dealer purchase a home. He had $75,000 in a savings account, but he said we couldn’t consider that to qualify him. He explained that was his ‘sleep at night’ account because he always had six to eight months of expenses in the bank in case he had a bad sales month or two,” John said. In the process of opening his own US Mortgage branch, John wanted to make sure he had plenty of capital reserves. He put less money down and left the rest in the bank in his own “sleep at night” account. John said, “I have a big family and I don’t want to worry. I guess you could say that PMI helps me to regularly get a good night’s sleep.” Learn More: Are you ready to purchase a home with a low down payment? Or should you wait to save more? VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive. HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS Draw attention to those skills that will apply to your new career. All of your experience and skills likely won’t transfer to your new career, but that does not mean you’re going in with an empty briefcase. Make a list of your most transferable skills, and develop an interview strategy that highlights those skills and explains how they can be applied in both the near future and over the course of your new career.
