STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Embrace strategic landscaping. The landscaping outside of a home can contribute to cooler climates inside the home. Deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, and when planted on the western and southern sides of a home, these trees can block the sun from entering the home during the hottest times of day, reducing the need to lower the thermostat on air conditioners. Of course, when these trees shed their leaves in late fall, sunlight can then make its way into the home, potentially reducing heating costs.

So many changes since that first edition in 1948. So many wonderful people have passed through our doors – advertisers, suppliers, many friends and most especially our dedicated employees. As a family we have been blessed many times over as we have worked together in the advertising business. The future is bright! We are excited and happy to have a third generation already involved and ready to take on the next chapters of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

On June 27, at 11:00am, on Parcel 5 in the City, the winners anxiously awaited the final winning news, while seated on a decorated stage. Each was told they had won one of the prizes, but not one of them knew who had won the new 2018 Henderson Ford Focus. They sat with sealed envelopes in hand, as Quick Lane Assistant Manager Brian Henderson called out a count down to envelope opening. ␣ ␣␣ Tayvon Jackson, graduating senior from School of the Arts, became the very excited owner of a brand new 2018 Henderson Ford Focus. Eleven additional seniors each won a $250.00 cash prize: Kayonnah Singletary (East High School), Anthony Johnson (Edison Career & Technology High School), Alexis Dygert (Rochester Early College International High School), Olivia Moore (School Without Walls), Alfredo Aponte (The School of the Arts), Anthony Jubray Jr. (Wilson Magnet High School), Keysi Morato (World of Inquiry School No. 58), Melissa Fitzgerald (Integrated Arts & Technology High School), Zaquan Jackson (Leadership Academy for Young Men), Laleyshka Cruz (Northeast College High School) and Tiona Peoples ( James Monroe High School). ␣ ␣␣ With pride, all of the sponsors were awed by the presentation of success, through these students’ lives.␣ There was representation in the top 10% of their classes, completion of AP courses, advanced band participation over four years, National Honor Society membership, Student Government involvement, sports and club participation over several years with state award recognition, community service and first-steps defined toward professional goals. ␣ ␣␣ This is the second year of the giveaway, sponsored by Henderson Ford, The Andrew Langston Center for Educational Excellence, Advantage Federal Credit Union, Attorney Van Henri White, WDKX, 13 WHAM ABC, WUHF FOX Rochester, and CW Rochester. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

The Great Vitamin Debate --DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you prescribe vitamins or treatments to enhance the immune system? -- C.N. ANSWER: I do not. In my opinion, a healthy diet makes a deficiency of a vitamin or mineral severe enough to weaken the immune system unlikely. Stress reduction (through many techniques) and good sleep are more important than supplements. People think that a daily vitamin and mineral supplement is like an insurance policy against a good diet. However, many studies have shown that taking vitamins does not, in general, lead to improvements in prevention of disease, including heart disease, cancer or infections. So I would be much more likely to recommend a better diet (especially in the fresh fruits and vegetables) than I would a supplement. Many adults have not gotten all the vaccines that are recommended, and these are a huge benefit to your immune system for those specific bacteria and viruses.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old male in generally good health. I am maybe 10 pounds overweight. I have had no heart attacks or cardiac symptoms. I walk on the treadmill for exercise. I have controlled hypertension, and have been taking simvastatin, 10 mg. My LDL is 71, very favorable. My HDL is also good, at 73. Several years back, when I started the statin, my doctor added Zetia, 10 mg. At the time, I wondered why this would be OK, and he said, “Well, there is a certain synergy there.” While I have continued taking the Zetia and suppose it might be helpful, I wonder if I need it. I say this because it is rather expensive (about $500 a year with my part D coverage). It is the only thing I take that costs me this much. My reading of the literature suggests that while Zetia might help the LDL level, there is no evidence that it improves longevity (i.e. cardiovascular). -- J.P. ANSWER: This is a confusing subject, because the theory (that lowering cholesterol protects your heart) and the evidence (that it actually works) don’t exactly align. High cholesterol certainly is associated with a higher likelihood of heart blockages, which can lead to heart attack and death. However, not all treatments that lower cholesterol reduce risk of heart attack. On the one hand, there are treatments that lower cholesterol that do help your heart. The Mediterranean diet clearly reduces risk of heart attack. Dr. Dean Ornish’s plant-based diet of very little fat and little or no meat, in combination with stress reduction and smoking cessation, actually reverses blockages in arteries in some people. Statin drugs reduce cholesterol and help prevent heart attacks, at least in people at high risk for them. On the other hand, ezetimibe (Zetia) reduces cholesterol, but like most nonstatin drugs to treat high cholesterol, it has not been proven to reduce heart disease risk. It tends to have few side effects and probably is not harmful. But you are correct that it is expensive, and like all medications, it can possibly cause harm. Being conservative about medication, I very rarely prescribe it. Studies are ongoing, and I will readdress this topic when there is more evidence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Even Exchange HOME-BREWED COFFEE THAT’S AS GOOD AS IT GETS (NAPSI)—Have you ever pondered the delicious cup of coffee served up at your favorite coffee shop and wished your hurried morning home-brewed cup could be just as good? If you use one of the push-button pod brewing systems, you are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor, value and the environment. Do you realize that when you buy coffee pods, you are paying about $40 per pound of coffee and adding greatly to the local landfill? A drip coffeemaker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but you probably waste half the coffee that you brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee. Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers, you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and what’s more, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer such as the AeroPress coffeemaker you can brew a smooth, rich cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The AeroPress has the unique capability to brew espresso so you can make café-quality lattes at home. The process is simple, cleanup is fast and easy, and the grounds, including the filter, are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain. It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Use a manual brewing device, brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and you’ll get the most out of every bag of coffee you buy.

HINTS TO HELP YOU HAVE MORE COMFORT AT LESS COST (NAPSI)—When the temperature’s rising, your energy costs don’t have to. These tips from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can help: 1. Keep the Heat Out and the Cool In—Sealing and insulating your home can save you up to $200 a year in utility bills. Find and seal air leaks with spray foam, caulk and weather stripping. Seal and insulate the cooling system ducts in your attic. Considering new windows? ENERGY STAR certified windows have coatings that let in light but keep out heat. Replacing old windows with these lowers household energy bills 12 percent on average. Also, keep shades down and drapes closed. 2. Maintain Your Cooling System—Have a contractor check and clean evaporator and condenser air-conditioning coils, check your central air conditioner’s refrigerant level and adjust if necessary, and clean and adjust blower components. Inspect, clean or change your system’s air filter every three months. 3. Need a Room AC?—If you’re getting a room air conditioner, be aware that models with the ENERGY STAR label have been independently certified to deliver energy savings, comfort, and improved sealing and insulation. On average, they cost as little as $70 per year to run. A room air conditioner with connected functionality can: • Turn off the unit remotely using your phone or computer; • Schedule changes to temperature settings based on your needs; • Get feedback on the energy use of the product. Choose the right size AC. An oversized unit will only remove some of the humidity, leaving the room with a damp, clammy feeling. When installing an AC, follow the instructions and use the insulation materials included. 4. Get Set for Savings—Install a new ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat for energy savings with environmental benefits, reliable performance, and convenience, insight and control. A Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat can automatically adjust heating and cooling temperature settings for optimal performance. If you have a manual or programmable thermostat, set the temperature up to save energy when you’re asleep or away. 5. Choose and Use Products to Keep Your Cool—In hot weather, use an ENERGY STAR certified ceiling fan in the counterclockwise direction. This creates a wind-chill effect, making you “feel” cooler. Replace incandescent lightbulbs with ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs. These produce about 70 to 90 percent less heat, so they’re safer and can cut energy costs. For more information and tips, visit www.energystar.gov/cooling.

Behaviors that may help you reduce your risk for colorectal cancer Colorectal cancer is a formidable foe. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Colorectal cancer is similarly lethal in Canada, where the Canadian Cancer Society reports it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and the third leading among women. Some risks for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual’s control. For example, the CCS notes that a personal or family history of polyps in the colon, rectum or both significantly increases a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by gene mutations, causes polyps to develop in the lining of the colon, rectum or both. Since Lynch syndrome is inherited, there is nothing men and women can do to reduce their risk of developing it. Research into colorectal cancer is ongoing, making it difficult for doctors to say certain behaviors or approaches are certain to reduce a person’s risk of developing the disease. But there are certain things individuals can do that might help save them from falling victim to colorectal cancer. • Get screened. The CDC notes that colorectal cancer usually begins when polyps form in the colon or rectum. If they go undetected, these polyps may turn into cancer. Screening can detect polyps early so they are found before they develop into cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening using high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, or FOBT; sigmoidoscopy; or colonoscopy for men and women between the ages of 50 and 75. • Embrace physical activity. While men and women who are physically active can still get colorectal cancer, the CCS notes

Phsyical activity may help men and women reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer. that people who live sedentary lifestyles are at a higher risk of developing the disease than those who are active. • Maintain a healthy weight. According to the CCS, people who are overweight or obese have greater incidence rates of colorectal cancer than those who maintain healthy weights. The CCS also notes that men with a high body mass index, or BMI, seem to be most at risk of developing colorectal cancer. • Limit alcohol consumption. The CDC notes that some studies have shown that limiting alcohol consumption may reduce a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is a devastating disease, but men and women who embrace healthy behaviors may be able to lower their risks.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There might still be some uncertainty about the decision you made. But a quick check of the facts should reassure you that you’re doing the right thing. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The tidy Taurean needs to be a little more flexible about accepting some changes to those carefully made plans. You might be pleasantly surprised by what follows. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Consider stepping away from your concentrated focus on your new project for a bit so you can get some perspective on what you’ve done and where you plan to take it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) The understandably angry Crab might not want to accept the reason why someone might have tried to hurt you. But at least you’ll have an insight into why it happened. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) There might be some facts you still need to know before leaping onto center stage. Best to move carefully at this time so that you can observe what’s happening around you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to expand your outlook by getting out and around, whether you do some long-range traveling or just explore the great things to see closer to home. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your wise counsel continues to be needed as that family situation works itself out. Meanwhile, the decisions you made on your job begin to pay off quite nicely. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your job situation brightens thanks to all your hard work. Now, spend some time repairing a personal relationship you might have neglected for too long. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects favor action in the workplace. Line up your facts and show your superiors why you’re the one they’re looking for. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your hard work pays off on the job. Personal relationships also can benefit from more of your time and attention. Spend the weekend with loved ones. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Early feedback on your project might be disappointing. But don’t be discouraged. Use it to make needed adjustments, then submit it to your superiors again. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Flattery could lure the otherwise sensible Fish into making an unwise decision. Be careful. All that praise might be an attempt to reel you in before you can learn the facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful sense of who you are. You are a shining example to others, helping them believe in themselves and what they can do. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

While passing through Dansville last Friday, we experienced alternator trouble with a 3-day old alternator! We're grateful to Van Hyning Automotive for replacing the alternator and communicating with the garage who originally replaced it. You rescued our weekend and family reunion. The people of Dansville are fortunate to have such capable mechanics! Thanks to our employers, Steve and Kim for the amazing lunch supplied by Tom Wahl’s Food Truck last week. It is always a summer event we all look forward too. GVPS is a great place to work with many

special perks! Thanks again Steve and Kim. Your GVPS family This past weekend my husband and I were out for a ride on our Harley. We never have a plan when we leave our house except to stop for lunch somewhere different. Some of our stops have been the Glenn Iris Inn in Letchworth Park and Bristol Harbor Golf Course. The views we have seen are amazing. I love to see all the different homes and the gardens and landscaping people take pride in. Letchworth is a beautiful park that has so much to offer. The hills and valleys around us are beautiful. We are

attempts. When you ghost a small rental business (that didn’t even require a deposit) it takes away from someone that actually wanted it. You own a clothing business and you wouldn't like it if someone did that to you! You're the reason rental businesses require deposits.

Next time you make a reservation for something (especially at a small business) have the decency to contact them and let them know you want to cancel. It is extremely rude to book something and then ignore confirmation

Have you ever returned something to the store? Ever wondered what happened to that item afterwards? So many assume it gets put right back on the shelf, but that actually rarely happens. State laws dictate that many (read: most) returned items be trashed. Socks and underwear? Garbage. Any food item? Trash. Any over-the-

so lucky to live in such a beautiful state. If you have the opportunity and time, take a drive outside of your neighborhood and see what you’re missing. I love summer in NY. Thank you to the folks who have local fruit/veggie stands, to share the benefits from their work growing all the fresh produce. Another benefit of small town living!!! Thanks to Coach Jackie for a wonderful U9 Summer Soccer season. The girls progressed beautifully and by the end of the season were a real team! It was a treat to see them come out of their shells, face fears, learn skills

counter meds and vitamins? Dumpster. Swim wear? Gone. The list goes on and on... So if you ever complain about retail waste, know that much of this is the customer's fault. Be sure of what you're buying. Don't purchase a clothing item in 3 sizes to try on at home and return what doesn't fit. That return will probably end up in a landfill with countless other items purchased and returned by thoughtless customers. Think first, and shop consciously. But FREEDOM DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO DO AS YOU PLEASE. It does however, give me the right to be inside my home and not have to

and develop a team bond. Thank you for all your hard work and patience. - Appreciative Parents To whoever planted the gorgeous sunflower field on the way out of Avon, thank you! It’s a bright spot we look forward to passing every day.

listen to bombs going off all around me. I have the right to go to sleep when I so choose, not when you decide to stop making noise that is so loud it’s heard inside of my home with the windows closed. Whether it's fireworks, loud music or whatever else you so thoughtlessly impose upon your neighbors, you are violating my right to have peace and quiet inside of my own home. Since you don’t care how your actions impact others, I won’t feel bad for calling the cops in order to protect MY RIGHT TO BE FREE FROM YOUR THOUGHTLESS AND ILLEGAL ACTIVITY. There are noise and firework laws.

HOW TO BUILD A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Reconnect with your college or university. Another great way to build a professional network is to reconnect with your college or university. When meeting people affiliated with your alma mater, the ice has already been broken in a sense, as the school is essentially a built-in connection. You also won’t have to worry about the awkwardness that might come when meeting a professional contact with whom you have less in common. Alumni organizations and local chapters can introduce you to people who earned your degree at your school, and many people love to help out their fellow alumni.
