HOW TO KEEP CHICKEN FROM STICKING TO YOUR GRILL

According to the grill manufacturer Weber, the keys to grilling chicken are temperature and time. But even cooks who have paid close attention to the temperature of their grills and the time their chicken spends over a hot flame have no doubt fallen victim to chicken that sticks to the grill. This can affect the quality of a meal and make post-grilling cleanup that much more difficult. To prevent sticking, Weber advises cooks to put a light coating of olive oil and seasoning directly on the chicken prior to putting it on the grill. Once the chicken has been dressed, make sure the grill temperature remains around 425 F to 450 F. Chicken will stick to a grill if the temperature is too high, so pay close attention to the temperature at all times. Once the chicken has been placed on the grill, allow each side to cook for roughly 4.5 minutes. If the chicken is difficult to flip or remove from the grill, close the lid and allow it to cook for one additional minute.

Properly maintained headlights vastly improve driver safety

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be replaced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs when replacing them. Industry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every two years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking with the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor weather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of night vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the standard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam pattern that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

Clean the interior glass and mirrors. Dirty interior glass and mirrors make it difficult for drivers to see fellow motorists, so make removing any film buildup on such surfaces part of your routine vehicle maintenance.

Nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, the quaint village of Phelps, New York, comes alive each year with the lively and avorful Sauerkraut Festival. is four-day extravaganza, which has been a cherished tradition since its inception in 1967, highlights not only the village’s historical ties to sauerkraut production but also its vibrant sense of community.

A Historical Connection: e Origins of the Sauerkraut Festival

e roots of the Sauerkraut Festival trace back to Phelps’ rich history as a signi cant sauerkraut producer. Initiated by the Phelps Chamber of Commerce in 1967 as a one-day event, the festival quickly grew in popularity, evolving into the village-wide celebration it is today. e festival’s inception was a nod to Phelps’ role as one of the world’s largest sauerkraut producers, driven by its Silver Floss Sauerkraut Company (now Great Lakes Kraut Company, a part of Agrilink, Inc.) and Birds Eye Foods.

Over the years, the festival underwent transformations under the stewardship of a dedicated committee, comprised of community members and organizations. By 2013, the festival expanded into a fourday a air known as the Phelps Sauerkraut Weekend, encompassing various activities and events that showcase the diversity and vibrancy of the community.

Families enjoy the Arts and Cra s for Kids and carnival rides. A Kiddie Parade, led by the Phelps Fire Department, adds a charming touch, followed by piñatas and DJ music to keep spirits high.

e “Kraut Krawl” allows adults a cra beverage stroll through downtown Phelps, featuring local vendors such as Local Palate, Brewery Ardennes, and Smokin’ Tails Distillery. Live music and

Middlebrook said that particularly notable this yearwas“thesheervolume of people that attended the festival from all over the world including Canada, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.” Attendees particularly enjoyed the parade, the Kraut Krawl, the Mustang and Jeep shows, carnival rides, and food at local businesses as well as the food trucks and carnival vendors. is festival showed that the Town and Village of Phelps have a lot of activities and unique businesses to o er surrounding communities.

e annual Phelps Sauerkraut Festival is not just an event; it’s a representation of a community’s history, unity, and love for tradition. As attendees indulge in sauerkraut-inspired dishes and experience the vibrant atmosphere, they become part of a legacy that honors both the past and the present. In the charming village of Phelps, the Sauerkraut Festival stands as a testament to the power of community spirit and the joy that comes from coming together to celebrate shared heritage.

Patient With Osteoarthritis Develops Hives After Taking Ibuprofen

DEAR DR. ROACH: I took ibuprofen for my osteoarthritis, but developed hives. Does this mean I’m allergic to all NSAIDs? What other therapeutic options do I have? -- J.B.

ANSWER: Anti-inflammatory drugs can have many allergic and allergic-type reactions, and ibuprofen is probably the most likely of all to do so. For people with mild reactions (such as hives that go away) without swelling or shortness of breath, I recommend avoiding ibuprofen and similar medicines, such as naproxen (Aleve and Naprosyn, among others), as well as any other medication ending in “-profen,” such as ketoprofen or flurbiprofen.

Aspirin is safe for most people as far as allergies go, although it is a little more likely to cause side effects at higher doses. The prescription medicines meloxicam (Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen) and celecoxib (Celebrex) are among the least likely to have any cross reaction with ibuprofen. Anti-inflammatory gels like diclofenac cream (Voltaren) should also be safe for topical use.

People with more serious reactions need a referral to an allergist, who may consider desensitization.

DEAR DR. ROACH: We had to get a router attached to our computer to get Wi-Fi for our house. Is there any health risk by sitting or sleeping near the router from the radio waves it puts out? -- B.R.

ANSWER: The energy output from a typical Wi-Fi router is about 10 watts, and the energy is the lowfrequency, non-ionizing type. Very powerful radio sources, such as AM radio towers, can actually cause injury by heating tissues, but these have a power output in the thousands, or even tens of thousands, of watts. There has never been evidence of health effects on humans by low-output radio waves, such as the waves from Wi-Fi or cellphones.

3 SIMPLE WAYS TO A HEALTHIER HEART

Heart disease is a formidable foe. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. The Government of Canada notes that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in that country, annually accounting for tens of thousands of deaths. (Note: Canada’s population is slightly more than one-tenth the population of the United States.)

While heart disease exacts a devastating toll on the United States and Canada, its reach extends far beyond North America, as the American College of Cardiology notes that cardiovascular disease accounts for 31 percent of all deaths across the globe.

In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways for men and women to reduce their risk for heart disease.

1. Maintain a healthy weight. The American Heart Association reports that between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise.

2. Understand and manage blood pressure. The AHA notes that high blood pressure, a common condition affecting roughly one in three Americans, is often referred to as “the silent killer” because it does not necessarily produce symptoms. Blood pressure measures the force pushing outward on the walls of blood vessels as they carry blood oxygen to the body’s organs, and the force created as the heart rests between beats. Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high.

3. Control cholesterol levels. High levels of low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, can increase a person’s risk for heart disease. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Men and women should get their cholesterol levels checked at least once every four to six years beginning at age 20. Men and women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol should recognize that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal products can provide a simple way for men and women to lower their cholesterol. A more thorough and detailed plan to lower cholesterol levels should be discussed with a physician.

Despite the widely held notion that men exceed the number of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields, data indicates that there isn’t actually much disparity among the sexes. According to the National Science Foundation, women equal men in terms of bachelor’s degrees awarded in most of the fields of STEM, including biosciences, social sciences, mathematics, and physical sciences. The only STEM fields in which men still outnumber women are computer science and engineering. Women are just as capable as men to meet the demands of STEM careers. Raw IQ tests from the British Psychological Society have indicated that women and men frequently score equally well, with some studies suggesting women have the edge. In terms of mathematics prowess, girls score a mere 3 percent lower than their male counterparts on the math portion of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, according to the College Board.
