HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.

DID YOU KNOW? According to a 2011 study published in the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Nutrition, experimental data from animal studies suggests that maternal undernutrition among pregnant women may play a role in preterm birth. The study also reported that a lack of specific nutrients during pregnancy may influence gestation length by increasing the likelihood that a woman will give birth before reaching full-term. Women who are pregnant or hope to become pregnant can speak with their physicians about the role nutrition can play in a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

How do you get rid of moles in your garden that are eating all your plants? If the animals are actually eating your plants, then they are not moles. Moles eat insects and earthworms in the soil. You probably have voles that can look similar to moles. Voles eat plants. Voles prefer the bark of young fruit trees as well as tender stems, foliage, flowers, seeds and fruits of grasses, sedges and many other herbaceous plants. They will make surface and underground tunnels. Cats, dogs, foxes, skunks and coyotes will eat voles as will some snakes and birds. Keep a clean space around your garden. Mow it short or keep it dead. They do not like to be in the open due to the above-mentioned predators. You can use live traps but it is illegal in NY to relocate the animals so you will need to kill and bury them on your property. You can use a half inch mesh to surround your garden or individual plants, but you will need to bury it 6 to 10 inches or so underground and have it extend about 12 inches above ground. Moles are not much for climbing. I have several Emerald Green Arborvitae which have brown patches from dead branches. Is it best to trim these brown spots or leave them? Dead branches on arborvitae are common in the spring. You can remove them now, and new growth will fill in the area. This problem can be reduced by providing ample irrigation in the fall IT? According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured. RANTS Go to WWW.GVPENNYSAVER.COM and submit your own Rants and Raves under the tab - SHARE WITH US Orioles! It is beautiful to see all the orioles swarming at my oriole feeder. Everyone should get one to help hydrate the birds on these hot and dry days. I got the oriole feeder that you put a grape jelly jar on, and the orioles just love it! I watch females and males at the feeder. There are skirmishes too, as one oriole may take too long to enjoy the sweet treat, but usually the males let the females go first. Nice birds! I also keep my hummingbird feeder clean with fresh homemade, no color added, sugar and water, weekly or less depending on how fast the hummers go through the nectar. No problems with ants or rodents as I keep the oriole feeder 30 feet away from the house and on a shepherd’s hook stand. I think there are about four pairs of orioles and their offspring who visit the feeder now. Just this morning, I spotted five orioles at the feeder at one time; two eating the jelly, and three waiting on the shepherd’s hook for their turn. It’s comical, too. Animals in Stores? I like animals; I truly do. I have a cat of my own and would love to own a dog one day. However, there is no need to bring a dog into any store that is not a pet store. Unless you have a service animal, please keep your animals at home. Not everyone wants dogs by their food or where they generally grocery shop. This includes outdoor restaurants. Some dog breeds are massive in size and can make people uncomfortable. Take a minute and think about that. I’m glad you love your pet, but please don’t expect me to. Let’s have common courtesy and leave our pets at home or only bring them in pet stores. Respect private property! I recently looked out my window and saw a family of strangers in my field, posing their children for photos using crops as props. They did not ask for permission, just proceeded to do what they wanted. It shouldn’t matter whether land is posted or not. It’s common sense and common decency. Would they like it if I came into their yard and started treating it like it was my own? Unless it’s designated a public space, it’s obviously private property, and you are not entitled to be on it without the owners’ consent. Midterms Now’s the time we all should be looking closer at our leadership. Midterm elections are around the corner. Remember [to vote] at election time.
Determining the nutritional value of certain foods can be a tricky business. Many foods can be enjoyed in moderation, and labeling them as “good” or “bad” might lead to negative connotations. In addition, food labels change from time to time as nutritionists and doctors learn more about nutrition and revise their opinions on certain items. One food type that has remained off the bad foods radar for quite some time is protein. Protein sources are largely touted as the be-all and endall in nutrition. But even seemingly infallible protein should be eaten in

Consuming Collagen Is Not Proven to Reduce Wrinkles
Reserved
DEAR DR. ROACH: Several months ago, I started adding 25 grams of whey protein to an afternoon smoothie each day. I was worried about muscle loss after reading an article. I have seen the sagging muscles and skin in my arms and thighs. I am a 71-year-old woman, who plays tennis twice a week and goes to the gym about once a week. I have friends my age who have started adding collagen powders to their smoothies to improve their skin and prevent further facial wrinkles. After researching collagen supplements, I learned that they contain collagen peptides and protein. The dosage and ingredients vary by vendor. What is the correct collagen dosage and ingredients I should be looking for? Is the protein in collagen the same as the protein in whey? -- R.K. ANSWER: All proteins, such as whey and collagen, are long strands of amino acids. A “peptide” is two or more amino acids connected, while a “polypeptide” is 20 or more amino acids. A protein is a polypeptide that has a function in the organism. Proteins are broken down by acid and enzymes in your stomach, back into their component amino acids, to be used anyplace the body has need for them. Part of the reason that skin wrinkles is loss of collagen, but it is not at all clear that consuming more collagen, or any protein, will increase the collagen in the skin and therefore reduce wrinkles. You can save a great deal of money by consuming collagen, if you decide you want to, from time-honored sources like chicken broth. Some collagen supplements are made from parts of animal carcasses that contain heavy metals and other toxins, so I would be wary of supplements. Medicated creams like vitamin A derivatives (such as retinol or tretinoin) work by increasing collagen production in the skin. Vitamin C creams help prevent the breakdown of the existing collagen in the skin. Vitamin C breaks down quickly, so these creams need to be handled sparingly. Moisturizing the skin makes it appear fuller and helps prevent further damage, especially when a daily sunscreen is included.

Before we know it, that yearly event will be here -- when we have to decide what to do about our Medicare plans between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7 for coverage that will begin Jan. 1. ere are several things we have to consider, such as taking on a prescription drug plan or changing to a new one, or staying with original Medicare or going with an Advantage plan or changing Advantage plans or going back to original Medicare. All these take time to think about. oughts to consider: What will Social Security look like in 2023? We won’t know the Social Security increase until it is announced in October. ere have been guesses that we might receive as much as a 10.5% increase, which calculates to $175 for the average bene ciary. e Part B premium will be deducted from We’rethat.likely looking at an 8.5% increase in Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans costs. Check the costs of your prescriptions over the past three years, because for some of us, that’s where the big-ticket expenses are. Chances are the drug costs have gone up, possibly even signi cantly. And chances are they’re not coming down. What to do, what to do ... Two options are worth looking at: GoodRx (www.goodrx.com) and Marc Cuban CostPlus Drug Company (costplusdrugs.com). Both o er discounted prices on prescription drugs. Investigate and see what you think. A Kaiser study concluded that seven out of 10 people did not research the plans during open enrollment. Because of the rising costs of everything in our lives, this needs to be the year that we compare, compare, compare. When in doubt, look into SHIP, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which is in every state, sta ed by volunteers who can help you wade through the Medicare information. Treasure Hunting Safety Tips For The Savvy Yard Sale Shopper
Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.
Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers. Counterfeit or illegal goods: Check the “look and feel” of goods. Fake products often seem light and flimsy.

Many college students are struggling to graduate without accumulating substantial student loan debt. Data compiled from Market Watch, an economy and investing resource, has found that nearly 70 percent of bachelor’s degree recipients leave school with considerable debt. It’s estimated that America’s student loan debt grows almost $3,000 per second. The Institute for College Access & Success has listed the average American student debt at $29,000. The Canadian Federation of Students lists the average debt at $27,000 for Canadian students. The burden of debt may cause graduates to accept the first job offer that comes along and/or impede their ability to buy houses or make other large purchases. Only about 40 percent of borrowers are paying down their debts after landing a job. Graduates should realize that many loans only have six-month grace periods before repayment begins. Those who feel that student loan repayment may be difficult can speak to a financial advisor to go over loan consolidation, refinancing or extending the repayment period to make monthly payments more manageable.

In fact, Americans own an average of 24 electronic products per household, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. With technology changing so rapidly and new “it” devices hitting the market every few months, a lot of those devices get discarded quickly. That adds up to a lot of potential e-waste. Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to keep old electronics out of the waste stream. Donate. Donations give schools, nonprofits and lower-income families access to equipment they might not otherwise afford. Before donating, check with the organization to see what they need. Trade Up. If you are ready to upgrade to something new, programs such as RadioShack’s Trade & Save let you swap retired technology for store credit toward your purchase. Recycle. Electronics in nonworking condition should be recycled. Check www.Earth911.com or www.e-stewards.org to find a recycling center near you. Don’t Forget the Batteries. ‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
* To clean out the drawers of my husband’s tool cabinet without disturbing the tools, I tucked a knee-high panty hose leg over my vacuum cleaner wand. Most things stayed put, but the one or two small pieces of hardware that got sucked up were easily retrieved. I also did this on his workbench. I picked up all the dust and shavings along with the stray pieces of hardware. I pulled them out of the hose leg, and they were in a tidy pile for him to put away. -- U.L. in Kansas
* Ripen a green tomato by wrapping it in a sheet of newspaper or placing it in a plain, small paper bag. Leave it on the counter and check it daily until ripe.
ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One attraction that is synonymous with fairs and amusement parks is the Ferris wheel. The original Ferris wheel was designed and constructed for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Since then, Ferris wheels have become the most common type of amusement rides at state fairs and other attractions. However “pleasure wheels” and “great wheels” have appeared throughout history in areas of Persia, India and Bulgaria.
*cream.Ourfamily loves to make our own pizza, and we purchase dough from a pizzeria. On pizza nights, I pick up the dough first thing on the way home from work. I get it close to my work and let it sit in a bowl in the car while I pick up the kids and drive home. It takes about 45 minutes, so it’s risen nicely while we’ve been on the go. -- E.F. in New York

Guardians Stock the Shelves “ e children’s books are most in demand at our site,” adds Scorsone. “ e children who visit us enjoy being able to look through the selection while they wait for their appointments.” CFR’s O ce Manager Roni Bain, is the shelf’s “Guardian,” keeping it well stocked withMajorbooks.Pamela Rhodes, Corps O cer at the Salvation Army on Saltonstall Street in Canandaigua where another shelf is located agrees with the bene ts of hosting the bookshelf. “It is always a joy to see families, as they wait for an appointment with our caseworker, reading together, or seeing children so happy that they can pick out their own book to take home with them!” Beth Rahm spreads her love of reading while volunteering as the Guardian there, regularly lling three shelves with books of di erent reading levels – from toddlers through teen years, as well as for seniors, all people served at the Salvation Army. Rahm, a former teacher is an avid reader. e CRP Guardians ll their shelves from books in CRP’s storage room at the Canandaigua Primary/Elementary School. “It is just ten minutes from home, and ve minutes to my site so it is very convenient,” says Rahm. “I appreciate the work that all the Guardians do at the Little Red Bookshelves in making books available to the community,” says Carolyn Kless, a retired educator and the CRP board member who oversees the shelves. “Some Guardians have been caring for a Little Red Bookshelf for many years. While some have stepped forward because of their love of books and of reading, others have responded when I asked them. eir hard work reaches readers of all ages.”
“ e best thing about the Little Red Bookshelf is the ability to o er free books to people of all ages who visit our site,” says Sarah Scorsone, Program Manager & Site Coordinator of Healthy Families Ontario & Yates, a service of Child & Family Resource Center on South Main Street in Canandaigua. Healthy Families Ontario & Yates Programs provides home visitation services. Scorsone says Family Support Specialists provide books to families from the Little Red Bookshelf, or allow them to pick out their own when they visit the o ce. Other services bring community members into this o ce, where they have access to the Little Red Bookshelf. e organization rst partnered with CRP to host a bookshelf at the o ce in Geneva, and added a bookshelf when the agency expanded to the Canandaigua o ce site.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.

Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid CDL A or B, a clean driving record, pass a pre-employment physical and drug test and be willing to work nights and weekends. $18.88/hr + benefits NEW YORK STATE DOT IS HIRING Highway Maintenance Workers Contact your county office to fill out application: Genesee/Orleans 585-343-0502 Livingston 585-346-3036 Monroe Eastside 585-586-4514 Monroe Westside 585-352-3471 Wayne/Ontario 315-332-4000 Wyoming 585-786-3310 Additional information is available at: orhttps://www.dot.ny.gov/jobs/perm_positions/highway-maintenance-workercall1-877-DOT-JOB1. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.

Charcoal grills can remain hot for hours, even long after the flames have extinguished. As a result, charcoal grill users should recognize that their jobs are not done once the burgers, hot dogs and other foods have been removed from the grill. To safeguard against fires resulting from still-hot charcoal grills, grillmasters should avoid moving the grill while the coals are still burning hot. In addition, avoid placing any flammable objects close to the grill while the coals are cooling down. Potentially combustible items should also be kept far away from charcoal grills, ideally in locations where gusts of wind cannot blow them toward the grill. Charcoal grill owners can also inspect the metal grates on their grills to make sure they are not rusted. Damaged or rusted grates can make it possible for items to fall down onto surfaces below the grate, increasing the risk of fire. Another way for charcoal grill users to make using their grills more safe is to avoid the use of starter fluid or other igniters once the coals have been ignited.
