A Down-to-Earth Guide to Home Heating and Cooling A better way to heat and cool is right under your feet (Family Features) Increasing energy costs have many homeowners looking for new ways to save money. According to the Department of Energy, the average homeowner pays about $1,900 a year on utilities, most of it going toward heating and cooling bills. Adding insulation and sealing ducts can help, but what can be done to make some significant, long-term savings? A growing number of homeowners are finding savings in their own back yards by utilizing the earth’s natural energy to heat and cool their homes. It’s called geothermal energy - and it can save you some green while you’re going green. Geothermal Energy Geothermal systems - also known as ground source heat pump systems (GSHPS) or geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) have been around for decades but are just now coming to the attention of many homeowners. The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency have both endorsed ground source heat pump systems as among the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating, cooling and water heating systems available. How It Works The temperature of the earth below the surface - from a few feet to hundreds of feet down - is moderate and fairly constant. In many places it stays in the mid- to upper-50s all year. Instead of burning fossil fuels, a geothermal heat pump absorbs the energy stored in the earth to heat a home in the winter. In the summertime a heat pump rejects the heat from the space and transfers it back into the earth - making it extremely efficient and costeffective. To make it work, you need three basic elements: an underground loop system, a geothermal heat pump, and an air-delivery system. • Loop System: This is a system of high-density polyethylene plastic pipes buried in the ground. They are filled with fluid, a mixture of water and antifreeze, that circulates throughout the pipes. Open-loop systems circulate water drawn from a well. • Geothermal Heat Pump: The geothermal heat pump extracts heat from the fluid within the loop using a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle. This heat is then sent into the home. In the summer, it extracts heat from the indoor air and transfers it to the fluid, which cools as it circulates through the loop. • Air-delivery System: Most geothermal pumps use an electrically driven fan to distribute the air through ducts in the home. A residential system can also be equipped to heat household water, as well. According to the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, a geothermal system has efficiencies 50 to 70 percent higher than other heating systems, and cooling efficiencies 20 to 40 percent higher than available air conditioners. That means direct savings on home utility bills. High-density polyethylene plastic pipes buried in the ground are filled with circulating fluid that absorbs the ground’s heat and brings it indoors.

Winners of the rental economy There are a few benefits to renting. Renters are much more mobile: They can move to take a better job if the opportunity arises. And, more often than not, renting is cheaper than buying. If renters are disciplined about investing those savings, they can come out with more wealth than buyers. Plus, renters don’t lose their shirts in housing busts. IN-HOME COMPUTER REPAIR: 20 years experience, $70/ hr. No charge if not fixed. Free estimates. FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 2016

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diabetic Foot Ulcers Deservedly Feared DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is an 84-year-old diabetic. He has had a wound on his foot (on the inner side of his right foot, near his big toe) for about five months. He has been treated by a podiatrist, who has debrided the wound every week. He prescribed antibiotics when the wound has looked infected. A visiting nurse and my mother have changed and dressed the wound regularly during these months. This week, the podiatrist said he could see the bone in my dad’s foot, and recommended hyperbaric treatment. Could you tell me what your opinion is of this treatment in my father’s case? Do you know if it has a high percentage of success? -- C.O. ANSWER: Foot ulcers in diabetes are common and feared. Diabetes damages blood vessels, both large and small. Also, longstanding diabetes decreases the effectiveness of the inflammatory response and immune system. Finally, poor nerve function in people with diabetes combines with these other factors to predispose one to developing breakdown of the skin and development of ulcers. These ulcers can get large and deep, and when the bone is visible (and sometimes even when it’s not), the bone is infected. In this case, there is a high risk of the need for amputation. By far, the best way to deal with diabetic foot ulcers is to not get them in the first place. Good control of diabetes, proper footwear, regular checks by a professional and daily self-checks of the feet for people at high risk can reduce the likelihood of developing ulcers. Early and aggressive treatment of precursor lesions, even mild redness of the skin, ingrown toenails or fungal infection of the feet, should prompt urgent evaluation by a podiatrist. Once the ulcer has progressed to the point where your dad’s is now, aggressive measures are called for. In addition to care by a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, evaluation by a vascular surgeon and a wound-management specialist may be limb- and even lifesaving. While hyperbaric oxygen has indeed been shown to be beneficial in several studies (reducing amputation rate from 33 percent to 9 percent in one study), only an expert with detailed knowledge of your dad’s case can decide whether this is appropriate treatment. If you trust your podiatrist, I think it may well be a useful treatment. However, I would be sure that he, or a vascular surgeon, has looked at the quality of blood flow to the foot. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your position on the shingles vaccine for people in their 70s? We have been told that some doctors do not approve of it. Yet we know of so many people who suffered terribly from shingles. Thank you. -- J.T. ANSWER: I’ve written about the vaccine lots of times. I am a strong believer in it and think anyone over 60 should get it unless they have a medical reason not to. The older you are, the more important it is to get the shot, since the complication of pain (postherpetic neuralgia) is so devastating and tends to lasts longer the older you are. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Board Games Recent research has acknowledged the significant benefits that board games have, not only on children’s cognitive development and their brain’s motor functions, but also on important life skills such as patience, cooperation, concentration, teamwork and perseverance. “We find that game play enhances many cognitive functions, including visual discrimination, visual span, visual processing speed, visual-motor integration and visual sustained attention,” says Jason Pine, president and founder of the national after-school program Sharp as a Tack. “It is astounding how much progress each student makes in terms of cognitive processing speed in just one session! You can see the transformation in their eyes and body language.”

Renovations for senior safety As adults approach their golden years, the homes they once thought of as sanctuaries can become unsafe. Families wrestle with the decision to keep parents and grandparents in their homes or move them into assisted living facilities or other senior residences. Modifying seniors’ homes to make them safer is another option. The National Institute on Aging says that families may be able to have a senior stay at home by helping older relatives remain independent but safe. The following are a few ways to do just that. • Remove fall hazards. The NIA reports that six out of 10 falls happen at home, where people spend the most time and fail to think about their safety. Seniors who want to be independent may overestimate their physical abilities. Because falls can be so dangerous, leading to cuts, abrasions, broken bones, and more, seniors and their families must take steps to prevent falls in homes. Improve lighting, especially at night when sight may become diminished. Install hand rails and grab bars where possible. Pick up clutter and remove tripping hazards, such as slippery rugs or electric cords. Install an electric stair climbing seat to make traversing stairs less risky. • Improve visibility and ability to communicate. Vision loss may accompany aging, but technology can help mitigate such losses. Use big-button phones, remote controls and even keyboards so seniors can keep in touch. Voice-activated thermostats or smart home technology also can make it easier for seniors to voice their needs. • Modify fixtures and other features. Dexterity may wane with age, and arthritis can make grasping or turning doorknobs and faucets more challenging. Take inventory of areas of the home that present the biggest obstacles to seniors.

FAIRPORT-PERINTON EDITION

FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 2016

Replace knobs in the shower or on faucets with lever handles, which are easier to maneuver. Install new cabinets and doors that freely glide open and self-close. Replace toggle light switches with easier paddle-type switches that can be pushed with a hand or even arm. Motion-sensor lights also can be handy. Push-button oven controls may make cooking easier. • Prepare for medical emergencies. Invest in medical alert systems, such as necklaces or bracelets, that can be used to contact police or emergency medical personnel directly. Make phones available in commonly used rooms in the home, such as bedrooms, the living room, bathrooms, and the kitchen. • Install ramps and nonslip flooring. Ramps can make it easier to reach the front door or cross over elevated doorway thresholds. Nonslip flooring also can prevent falls around the house, offering more traction for feet, walkers or canes. • Repair cracks in walkways and driveways. Safety should also extend to the outdoors. Be sure to repair cracks or uneven pavement. Replace loose patio blocks or bricks with a more stable design or with concrete or asphalt. While outdoors, trim back bushes and make sure there are no tripping hazards outside as well. A few modifications can make it possible for seniors to live comfortably in their homes for many years. Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, w hich is a problem w ith the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during w hich the heart can beat too fast, too slow or w ith an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs w hen rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, w hich consists of the heart’s tw o upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, w hen a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. W hile that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s tw o low er chambers, and this prevents the low er and upper chambers from w orking together effectively. Though AF does not alw ays produce noticeable symptoms, some people w ith AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially w hen the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

Disappointed about my home town; when I drive through our town, it makes me sad. Our Christmas wreaths are pathetic. I have been to a lot of towns that look amazing, but when I drive in my town all I want to say is omg.... The wreaths are puny and half are not even lit. Shame on you for even putting them up; this town does not put any effort at all to make it look welcoming. If I did not live here I would just drive on. Please, next year, put some effort in to making our town nice. Again, shame on you and I think you all know what town I am talking about. To the person who stole our Siamese kitten/cat on Saturday 12-26: What were you thinking? She was loved and taken care of. Please return her! Just drop her off like you took her. Broken hearts in Bristol Thank you to those who throughout the Christmas Holiday wished everyone a “Merry Christmas.” I’m so sick of the political correctness. A right hand turn is a smooth motion...no reason to come to a screeching halt and look 4 ways!! To those with roadside memorials...We are truly sorry for your loss but “take it to the grave.” Imagine if everyone set up roadside memorials....there would be no place to walk. Leaving them up for 3 to 5 years or replenishing them is not fair to the community. That’s what grave sites are for and what YOU paid for; please move your memorials to the grave and out of public domain.

How Geothermal Energy Saves You Money (Family Features) According to Bosch Thermotechnology North America: • Geothermal heat pumps have the lowest life cycle cost today - 25 to 50 percent less than a conventional system. • You can save up to 70 percent on your energy bill, depending on location and which GSHPS you use. • Although the upfront costs are often more than a conventional system, the cost can be recouped within a short period of time - as little as 5 to 7 years. • Local and federal tax credits as well as rebates decrease installation costs. • Costs may be further reduced by special financing options offered by heat pump manufacturers, local utilities and lending institutions.

Pittsford HS Hockey Teams On Saturday, January 23, 2016, the Pittsford High School Hockey teams will play their seventh annual games to benefit cancer. The games will be held at the Gene Polisseni Center located at Rochester Institute of Technology, 51 Lomb Memorial Dr., Rochester. The Pittsford Panthers will host the Victor Blue Devils, with the Junior Varsity game beginning at 5:00 PM and Varsity game at 7:00PM. The seventh annual “Pittsford Panthers Pink the Rink” hockey games are the culmination of season-long cancer awareness fundraising efforts. The Pittsford JV and Varsity teams will be sporting pink jerseys and socks as a show of support in the fight against breast cancer. Many of the jerseys have initialed patches on the back. These jerseys were sponsored in memory or in honor of a loved one. All net proceeds from the Pink

games will benefit the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. Over the past 6 years Pittsford Hockey has donated over $32,000 from these Pink the Rink games. Pittsford Hockey continues in the effort to make these games an annual community event. Student involvement in the event has stretched beyond the hockey team and included high school students selling presale game packages and bracelets, and many local businesses and individuals contributing time and sponsorship funds. In addition to the games there will be special activities which include a chuck a puck contest, the RIT pep band, pink spirit wear sales of T-shirts and bracelets, and a special appearance by our Pittsford Panther! Admission is $5 for both games. More information is available at www.pittsfordhockey.org.

Dress for Success: How Men Should Dress on Their Next Job Interview Men should always wear a conservative suit when interviewing for a job. A dark navy or gray two-piece business suit is the standard for men. Though a conservative business suit is almost always appropriate, men might want to look into the company before going on an interview. If the company has a reputation for being informal, it might be acceptable to wear a sports coat with dress slacks and a necktie. The necktie a man wears on a job interview should always be conservative tie. It’s best to choose an understated silk tie that should also match the colors in your suit. The dress shirt should always be white and long-sleeved. Even if men don’t expect to remove their suit coat or sport jacket during the interview, it’s best to wear a long-sleeved shirt just in case. A long-sleeved shirt looks more professional and a white shirt matches any suit color or style. Dress shoes should always be worn when interviewing for a job. Never wear sneakers or other footwear that doesn’t look right with a suit. Doing so will almost certainly create the impression you don’t care about the job. Dress shoes should be nicely polished. A man’s belt should always match the color of his shoes, whether he is wearing a conservative business suit or a less formal sport jacket and dress slacks. Always keep facial hair neatly trimmed when going on a job interview. Unruly facial hair will create a bad first impression, indicating to the interviewer that you may not really care about getting the job. Facial hair used to be taboo on a job interview, but nowadays facial hair is acceptable as long it is neatly trimmed. It’s best to avoid wearing jewelry and remove any visible piercings before going on a job interview. A necklace underneath a dress shirt and a wristwatch are acceptable, but remove any rings (exception:wedding ring) and piercings. Cologne is not necessary for a job interview. Cologne can be worn, just be sure not to apply too much.
