Denise Baller: Compassion and Giving Back By Amanda Dudek

D

enise Baller, dance instructor, has a passion for giving back to those both near and far. Believing it is important to for children to learn kindness and compassion, Baller has created several opportunities for herself and her students to give back. Two years ago, the destructive Atlantic hurricane season gave them an opportunity to do just that. In 2017, Hurricane Irma swept through the Caribbean followed closely by Hurricane Maria, devastating lives and communities. “We are very involved with the Island of Saint John,” said Baller, referring to the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. “I had planned to go down and teach the girls there some pieces from the Nutcracker. Then the hurricane hit, so Dancing with Denise fundraised instead. We sent at least four generators to some of our dear friends in Saint John.” In 2016, Baller and her students had fundraised to bring some children from Saint John to New York. “When the girls from Saint John came to Webster, my students were finally able to meet children with whom they were already pen pals,” explained Baller. “After sending the generators, we realized this was something we wanted to continue.” In the summer of 2018, Baller and her students were fundraising once again. This time, several of them paid their Saint John pen pals a return visit. “A group of students both from my studio and from St. John Fisher did beach clean-up, painted at the School of the Arts and participated in the Carnival Parade,” said Baller. “We also helped our friend, Trinidad Charlie, whose whole house was ~ Denise Bower simply gone,” Baller continued. “The girls loved helping out. Our crew of 30 people cleaned the debris. Charlie was just dumfounded. Then Kenny Chesney’s group came in and rebuilt his house for him.” Earlier that year in January of 2018 Baller and her husband had visited Saint John on their own. “I taught children dance at the School of the Arts because there was nothing going on for those kids, not even school,” she shared. “It gave them a bright spot in their day, and that inspired me to bring my dancers back with me.” Baller has also served as a judge for Saint John’s Carnival Parade, sends school supplies to a child who was her “little copilot,” and plans on returning to Saint John next spring. “I would like to teach at the School of the Arts,” she said. “I love it and want to do it again.” “You don’t have to do a lot to make a difference in someone’s life,” observed Baller. “Sadly, my mom, affectionately called Miss Tina, passed away this past summer. She was living at the Fairport Baptist Home

and at Atria prior to that. When she lived at Atria, she could no longer come and sit at my dance studio’s front desk where she had become such a fixture after my dad passed away.” So, Baller started the Happy Feet Dancers, and once a month, a group of her students goes to Atria or another place in the community, dances and brings a sweet treat. The Happy Feet Dancers also visited the Comfort Care Home in Webster, participated in a camp Baller called “Happy Feet on the Move,” and are happy to volunteer wherever they can bring joy. “It brings happiness to the residents,” she said. “It is important to instill in students that you do good, and it will come back to you tenfold. That is what my mom taught me. A lot of what I do has stemmed from her. This month, my students are also collecting canned food. We build the Tower of Love with the cans, and I tell them, ‘Thank you for sharing because this is going to make someone happy by bringing them food.’ ” For Denise Baller, doing for others is a way of life. “I used to be at the nursing home every day as a very vocal advocate for my mother,” she said. “I still visit. Recently, I taught at the nursing home, and I went around asking people if I could give them a hug. You don’t realize it, but some of the people there don’t get hugs. Some of them don’t have people visit them. I try to do the little things that make people happy.” Baller also thanked her husband and the generous Webster community for all they have done to support her and her students. “Not everyone will end up on Broadway,” she said, paraphrasing a favorite quote. “However, they are going to walk away knowing how much they are loved, how to be a good person and how to treat others the way they would like to be treated.” For more information, visit www.dancingwithdenise. com. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson If you have a beautiful planter that has no drainage holes, you can pot your plant in a second pot that will fit inside. Put a few pebbles in the bottom of the pretty planter, then put your potted plant in. This way, the roots won’t rot in any excess water. You can cover any gap between the pots with a bit of moss or more pebbles.” -- K.D. in Georgia

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

Debunking Common Myths Associated With Breast Cancer Cancer claims the lives of millions of people across the globe every year. Yet the fight against cancer is anything but hopeless, as the World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of all cancer cases are preventable. Learning about cancer is one of the best ways for people to protect themselves from this deadly disease. Researchers continue to learn more about cancer every day and routinely discover that information once thought to be accurate was actually off-base. Despite researchers’ best efforts, some myths about cancer still prevail. Some of these myths are about cancer in general, while others refer to specific cancers, including breast cancer. Myths about breast cancer can be as harmful as accurate information is helpful, so learning the truth and debunking those myths can be an important part of women’s preventive approach to breast cancer. • Myth: Drinking milk increases your risk for breast cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that early studies raised concerns that drinking milk from cows treated with hormones could increase a person’s risk for breast cancer. However, ensuing research failed to find a clear link between the two. In fact, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found no significant association between dairy fluid intake and breast cancer risk. • Myth: Lumps indicate breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation® (NBCF) says that only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. However, abnormalities or changes in breast tissue should always be brought to the attention of a physician. • Myth: Mammograms cause breast cancer to spread. This myth is rooted in the incorrect notion that breast compression while getting a mammogram causes the cancer to spread. However, the NBCF insists that cannot happen. In fact, the National Cancer Institute touts the benefits of mammograms while the ACS recommends women between the ages of 45 and 54 get mammograms every year. For additional breast cancer screening guidelines, visit the ACS at www.cancer.org. • Myth: Women with a family history of breast cancer are likely to develop breast cancer, too. This myth is dangerous because, if taken at face value, it can give women with no family history of breast cancer a false sense of security. However, the NBCF notes that only about 10 percent of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of the disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that a woman’s risk for breast cancer is higher if she has a first-degree relative, including a mother, sister, daughter, or even a male family member, who have had the disease. But breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their family history. Information is a valuable asset in the fight against breast cancer. Learning to decipher between accurate and false information can be especially valuable.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari, the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad. Mata Hari claimed to have been born in a sacred temple, but in reality, the exotic dancer was born Margaretha Geertruida Zelle in Holland.

How to give back to seniors in your community The strongest communities tend to be those in which members make a concerted effort to give as much as they get. Giving back to one’s community can foster strong relationships with fellow residents and ensure that everyone, including the less fortunate, is in position to live happy, healthy lives. Certain people in a community may be more vulnerable to issues that can adversely affect quality of life than others. For example, the National Institute on Aging notes that, as men and women age, many are alone more often than when they were younger, leaving them vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness. Such feelings can prove very harmful to their health, potentially contributing to problems such as depression, cognitive decline and heart disease. Volunteering to help the aging members of one’s community is a great way to give back, and such efforts can prove rewarding for both seniors and the volunteers who lend them a hand.

• On Oct. 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion. Capone had avoided long stints in jail by bribing city officials and intimidating witnesses, and tax evasion was the only way federal agent Elliot Ness and “The Untouchables” could get him. • On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. His X-1 rocket plane was dropped from a B-29 aircraft, rocketed to 40,000 feet and exceeded 662 mph. * On Oct. 16, 1958, Chevrolet begins to sell a car-truck hybrid that it calls the El Camino. The vehicle, a combination sedan-pickup truck built on a station-wagon platform, was discontinued two years later, but was brought back in 1964.

• Pull an extra chair up to the dinner table. Many a meaningful connection has been made and maintained over the dinner table. Breaking bread with a senior from your community is a great way to foster such connections and provide an avenue for social interaction for seniors. Seniors who live alone might not enjoy cooking for one each night, but they might jump at the chance to eat dinner with a neighbor and even help prepare the meal. Invite a senior over once per week, encouraging them to share stories about their lives as well as how the community has developed over the years. • Help seniors manage their finances. Many seniors struggle to manage their finances, as laws regarding taxes and investing are subject to routine changes. A little help in this area can go a long way for seniors. Adults who want to help but don’t know where to begin can do the legwork for their aging neighbors. Contact agencies such as AARP to determine if there are any financial assistance programs that can help seniors effectively manage their money and take advantage of age-specific perks, such as programs that may help seniors lower their energy costs. • Offer to help around the house. Seniors who reside in singlefamily homes may not be able to keep up with routine home maintenance. Neighbors who want to help can offer to mow the lawn, tend to the landscaping and tidy up inside. Keep an eye open for other issues, such as clogged gutters, that can be fixed easily but prove costly if they go ignored. Helping aging neighbors is a great way to give back and build strong communities. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL

Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled w ith great w eather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh w inter w eather drives them back indoors.

The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Some women who have a high risk of breast cancer may choose to have a risk-reducing mastectomy (the removal of both breasts when there are no signs of cancer). The risk of breast cancer is much lower in these women and most feel less anxious about their risk of breast cancer. However, it is very important to have a cancer risk assessment and counseling about the different ways to prevent breast cancer before making this decision.

Thank you, Batavia, for all the scarecrows on Main Street. The whole family enjoys seeing the fun and festive decorated scarecrows! To the family, friends, and people whom I don’t even know, a huge shout out “Thank You and God Bless You” for the incredible

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business! Responding to the comment that a handicapped person GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

outpouring of love and support that has helped see me through my recent battle with cancer. Sandy, Deb, Nicole and Howard; only with your constant love and reassurance have I been able to endure this battle. To the many people who reached out to offer prayers, rides and hugs, I will never forget your kindnesses. I am truly blessed. Jill O’Coyne Owens Thank you so much! Big Thank You to Bob Devos at O’Connor Chevrolet and Ron Kyle at Vision Dodge for helping me with my car.

should welcome any assistance they are offered, whether requested or not: I am shocked! I am not an object for your pity. I am a person, endowed with the same rights as anyone else. I am quite capable on my own, but if I require assistance, I will ask for it. Touching me or my wheelchair, without my permission, is assault. It is against the law! Before you offer to “help” me, please wait for me to ask. Otherwise, you could find yourself explaining things to a policeman. I repeatedly asked for a VIP Empire Pass at my library, but it’s always out. I have been told a man checked it out in mid-June and still has it. Phone calls have not been returned; emails ignored. You may have saved some money, but

How do you know you live in an amazing community? When neighbors just show up ready to help with a big project you’re tackling. A huge thank you to Kirk for helping us reshingle our roof. We cannot thank you enough! -G&K A big Thank You to Top’s Pharmacy in Hamlin. A big thank you to Anthony, Michelle, and Gary at Top’s Pharmacy in Hamlin. Day in and day out they do their jobs, counting pills, dealing with insurance companies and physicians to try to accommodate the needs of the customers. At times, it can be quite frustrating indeed,

all you really accomplished is to be known as a patron inconsiderate of others. It’s a privilege offered by NYS and the library system. It’s a shame you feel you’re owed this benefit more than others. You should be ashamed, but I doubt you are. Hoping this message shames you into returning the Pass and apologizing to the librarians who must keep telling other patrons they can’t help them. It was a stupid thing to do. My light turned green, and I started making a left. You peeled out of that restaurant like a bat of you know where with no turn signal on. You were lucky I was able to bring the car to a stop halfway out as my classic car is not made with power brakes. It was a stupid, dangerous thing to do. I was tempted to

and that is why I want to thank them for a job well done. Anthony takes the time to try and explain things, and Gary is courteous and always pleasant, so much so that I wouldn’t know if he was having a bad day. They do their jobs without so much asan accolade and so in behalf of my family and I, I feel they deserve a shout out. Thank you for not only a job well done, but more importantly, thank you for being kind, courteous, and considerate while taking care of your customers’ needs.

backtrack and tell the police in the grocery store parking lot who were attending to a fender bender . I had a test taken and the doctor’s office said the results should be in on Friday. I told them I would call on Monday. So, on Monday I called three times and couldn’t get an answer. The doctor’s office can’t keep any help. There is always someone new that has no answers. I wonder why they can’t keep any help. My time is worth something also. They think just because they are doctors, they are above everyone else.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You could be caught in a torrent of advice from wellmeaning friends and colleagues this week. But remember, Lamb, you are at your best when you are your own inimitable self. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect strong efforts to get you to accept things as they are and not question them. But ignore all that and continue your inquiries until you’re sure you have all the answers you need. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Heavier than usual family and workplace duties compete for your time this week. Try to strike a balance so that you’re not overwhelmed by either. Pressures ease by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good time for the Moon Child to show off your uniquely inspired approach to the culinary skills -especially if they’re directed toward impressing someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might be happy about the re-emergence of a longdeferred deal. But don’t pounce on it quite yet. Time can change things. Be sure the values you looked for before are still there. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Try to rein in your super-critical attitude, even if things aren’t being done quite as you would prefer. Remember: What you say now could create an awkward situation later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you can expect on-the-job cooperation from most of your colleagues this week, some people might insist on knowing more about your plans before they can accept them. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating another way to do things is commendable. But you could find some resistance this week from folks who would rather stick with the tried-and-true than try something new. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You usually can keep your aim focused on your goal. But you might need to make adjustments to cope with unsteadiness factors that could arise over the course of the week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) News arrives about a projected move. Be prepared to deal with a series of possible shifts, including starting and finishing times, and how much the budget will actually cover. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new relationship needs time to develop. Let things flow naturally. It could be a different story with a workplace situation, which might require faster and more focused attention. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Accept a compliment without trying to troll for any hidden reason beyond what was said. After all, don’t you deserve to be praised every now and then? Of course you do. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to weigh all possibilities before making a decision. You would be a fine judge, or even be a star in a jury room.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB

Quitting a job can be full of mixed emotions. Just be sure to time it correctly and leave in as positive a way as possible to maintain a strong professional network.

Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.
