Denise Baller: Compassion and Giving Back By Amanda Dudek
D
enise Baller, dance instructor, has a passion for giving back to those both near and far. Believing it is important to for children to learn kindness and compassion, Baller has created several opportunities for herself and her students to give back. Two years ago, the destructive Atlantic hurricane season gave them an opportunity to do just that. In 2017, Hurricane Irma swept through the Caribbean followed closely by Hurricane Maria, devastating lives and communities. “We are very involved with the Island of Saint John,” said Baller, referring to the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. “I had planned to go down and teach the girls there some pieces from the Nutcracker. Then the hurricane hit, so Dancing with Denise fundraised instead. We sent at least four generators to some of our dear friends in Saint John.” In 2016, Baller and her students had fundraised to bring some children from Saint John to New York. “When the girls from Saint John came to Webster, my students were finally able to meet children with whom they were already pen pals,” explained Baller. “After sending the generators, we realized this was something we wanted to continue.” In the summer of 2018, Baller and her students were fundraising once again. This time, several of them paid their Saint John pen pals a return visit. “A group of students both from my studio and from St. John Fisher did beach clean-up, painted at the School of the Arts and participated in the Carnival Parade,” said Baller. “We also helped our friend, Trinidad Charlie, whose whole house was ~ Denise Bower simply gone,” Baller continued. “The girls loved helping out. Our crew of 30 people cleaned the debris. Charlie was just dumfounded. Then Kenny Chesney’s group came in and rebuilt his house for him.” Earlier that year in January of 2018 Baller and her husband had visited Saint John on their own. “I taught children dance at the School of the Arts because there was nothing going on for those kids, not even school,” she shared. “It gave them a bright spot in their day, and that inspired me to bring my dancers back with me.” Baller has also served as a judge for Saint John’s Carnival Parade, sends school supplies to a child who was her “little copilot,” and plans on returning to Saint John next spring. “I would like to teach at the School of the Arts,” she said. “I love it and want to do it again.” “You don’t have to do a lot to make a difference in someone’s life,” observed Baller. “Sadly, my mom, affectionately called Miss Tina, passed away this past summer. She was living at the Fairport Baptist Home

and at Atria prior to that. When she lived at Atria, she could no longer come and sit at my dance studio’s front desk where she had become such a fixture after my dad passed away.” So, Baller started the Happy Feet Dancers, and once a month, a group of her students goes to Atria or another place in the community, dances and brings a sweet treat. The Happy Feet Dancers also visited the Comfort Care Home in Webster, participated in a camp Baller called “Happy Feet on the Move,” and are happy to volunteer wherever they can bring joy. “It brings happiness to the residents,” she said. “It is important to instill in students that you do good, and it will come back to you tenfold. That is what my mom taught me. A lot of what I do has stemmed from her. This month, my students are also collecting canned food. We build the Tower of Love with the cans, and I tell them, ‘Thank you for sharing because this is going to make someone happy by bringing them food.’ ” For Denise Baller, doing for others is a way of life. “I used to be at the nursing home every day as a very vocal advocate for my mother,” she said. “I still visit. Recently, I taught at the nursing home, and I went around asking people if I could give them a hug. You don’t realize it, but some of the people there don’t get hugs. Some of them don’t have people visit them. I try to do the little things that make people happy.” Baller also thanked her husband and the generous Webster community for all they have done to support her and her students. “Not everyone will end up on Broadway,” she said, paraphrasing a favorite quote. “However, they are going to walk away knowing how much they are loved, how to be a good person and how to treat others the way they would like to be treated.” For more information, visit www.dancingwithdenise. com. Debunking Common Myths Associated With Breast Cancer Cancer claims the lives of millions of people across the globe every year. Yet the fight against cancer is anything but hopeless, as the World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of all cancer cases are preventable. Learning about cancer is one of the best ways for people to protect themselves from this deadly disease. Researchers continue to learn more about cancer every day and routinely discover that information once thought to be accurate was actually off-base. Despite researchers’ best efforts, some myths about cancer still prevail. Some of these myths are about cancer in general, while others refer to specific cancers, including breast cancer. Myths about breast cancer can be as harmful as accurate information is helpful, so learning the truth and debunking those myths can be an important part of women’s preventive approach to breast cancer. • Myth: Drinking milk increases your risk for breast cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that early studies raised concerns that drinking milk from cows treated with hormones could increase a person’s risk for breast cancer. However, ensuing research failed to find a clear link between the two. In fact, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found no significant association between dairy fluid intake and breast cancer risk. • Myth: Lumps indicate breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation® (NBCF) says that only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. However, abnormalities or changes in breast tissue should always be brought to the attention of a physician. • Myth: Mammograms cause breast cancer to spread. This myth is rooted in the incorrect notion that breast compression while getting a mammogram causes the cancer to spread. However, the NBCF insists that cannot happen. In fact, the National Cancer Institute touts the benefits of mammograms while the ACS recommends women between the ages of 45 and 54 get mammograms every year. For additional breast cancer screening guidelines, visit the ACS at www.cancer.org. • Myth: Women with a family history of breast cancer are likely to develop breast cancer, too. This myth is dangerous because, if taken at face value, it can give women with no family history of breast cancer a false sense of security. However, the NBCF notes that only about 10 percent of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of the disease. How to give back to seniors in your community The strongest communities tend to be those in which members make a concerted effort to give as much as they get. Giving back to one’s community can foster strong relationships with fellow residents and ensure that everyone, including the less fortunate, is in position to live happy, healthy lives. Certain people in a community may be more vulnerable to issues that can adversely affect quality of life than others. For example, the National Institute on Aging notes that, as men and women age, many are alone more often than when they were younger, leaving them vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness. Such feelings can prove very harmful to their health, potentially contributing to problems such as depression, cognitive decline and heart disease. Volunteering to help the aging members of one’s community is a great way to give back, and such efforts can prove rewarding for both seniors and the volunteers who lend them a hand.

• Pull an extra chair up to the dinner table. Many a meaningful connection has been made and maintained over the dinner table. Breaking bread with a senior from your community is a great way to foster such connections and provide an avenue for social interaction for seniors. Seniors who live alone might not enjoy cooking for one each night, but they might jump at the chance to eat dinner with a neighbor and even help prepare the meal. Invite a senior over once per week, encouraging them to share stories about their lives as well as how the community has developed over the years. • Help seniors manage their finances. Many seniors struggle to manage their finances, as laws regarding taxes and investing are subject to routine changes. A little help in this area can go a long way for seniors. Adults who want to help but don’t know where to begin can do the legwork for their aging neighbors. Contact agencies such as AARP to determine if there are any financial assistance programs that can help seniors effectively manage their money and take advantage of age-specific perks, such as programs that may help seniors lower their energy costs. • Offer to help around the house. Seniors who reside in singlefamily homes may not be able to keep up with routine home maintenance. Neighbors who want to help can offer to mow the lawn, tend to the landscaping and tidy up inside. Keep an eye open for other issues, such as clogged gutters, that can be fixed easily but prove costly if they go ignored. Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled w ith great w eather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh w inter w eather drives them back indoors.
The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business!
