The Kade Project: Making a Difference by Serving Others By Amanda Dudek

A

ccording to Deb Milne-O’Brien, her son, Kade Edward O’Brien was born with that special something that drove him to always help those around him. “It is just one of those things that is embedded in people sometimes,” she said. After Kade passed away in April 2011 due to a tragic motorcycle accident, his friends approached Milne-O’Brien about creating an organization to help others just as Kade always did. Before 2011 came to a close, The Kade Project was born. “Community meant everything to Kade,” said Milne-O’Brien, Founder and Executive Director of The Kade Project. “If he saw someone in need, he would automatically stop and offer to help.” Kade’s friends and Milne-O’Brien wanted to honor Kade by continuing to support those in the Honeoye Falls and Mendon communities. “We originally considered setting up a high school scholarship,” explained Milne-O’Brien. “Then, one of Kade’s friends said we should do something that would help a lot of people because that is what Kade would do, and it just blossomed from there.” The Kade Project began supporting local families with the little things which are often so important. “We help many high school students attend Driver’s Ed class, for example,” said Milne-O’Brien. “It costs about $400. Many young people are willing to work, but their families can’t afford that.” Similarly, The Kade Project has helped ambitious students take AP classes at MCC. “Some students have the opportunity to take an AP class at MCC, and that can be an extra $300-400,” Milne-O’Brien explained. “Parents want the best for their child so badly, but that can be hard. We help several of these children pay for these advanced classes. Some have kept in contact and are doing very well.” “We have also helped students study abroad,” said Milne-O’Brien. “Now, they are doing exactly what they were meant to do.” All The Kade Project asks is that its recipients pay it forward, making a difference for someone else.

Deb and her husband, Edward O’Brien, participating in Toys for Tots!

“I see that now with Kade’s friends who are on our board,” shared Milne-O’Brien. “They are raising their kids to help others, too. They say there is an added something in their lives. While they still would’ve raised their children this way, they also do it because of Kade.” Kade also took his do-for-others attitude into his career when he joined the Marines after graduating high school in 2004. “Kade just wanted to help after 9/11,” shared Milne-O’Brien. “They sent him home from school twice that day because he was so upset.” Each year, the Kade Project sends care kits to soldiers with a connection to the Honeoye Falls and Mendon communities. Sending care kits to those deployed is just one more way of caring for the community Kade loved so much. “We send anywhere from 3-20 care kits out each month,” said Milne-O’Brien. “We focus on those with a

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

community connection so that we can get to know and support their parents, brothers, sisters and other family. What I do best is help the community itself, and I know that these community connections will go out into the world.” The Kade Project regularly works with the Lima Primary School Outdoor Classroom Project, The Healing Place, Hometown Hero Banners, Little Free Library and the Village of Honeoye Falls. It also supports the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Kade Edward O’Brien served Foundation. “Both of my sons two tours in Iraq. were Marines, and both of them worked with Toys for Tots. Kade actually served as one of its poster boys down South,” said Milne-O’Brien. “We are in our 8th year of working with them, and sometimes, I think we get more out of it than the kids do.”

It isn’t hard to see the origin of Kade’s generosity when speaking with his family. “We have received help, too,” said Milne-O’Brien. “That makes a difference to people. If you can help quietly, respecting the feelings and privacy of those you are helping, that is beautiful. The Kade Project is all based on someone who did that, who believed in the goodness of people and who loved his entire community. People say, ‘Thank you for helping us. What can we do to help somebody else?’ That is what The Kade Project is all about.” The O’Briens also take joy in Kade’s son, Noah, who especially loves participating in Toys for Tots and is proud to know The Kade Project is helping to honor his father. “I have a child who died whose purpose in life was to help everyone else,” stated Milne-O’Brien. “We’re doing that for him.” Enjoy this article? Breast cancer signs and symptoms Breast cancer is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 627,000 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2018. But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical and could potentially save thousands of lives each year. A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer. Many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional cancer screenings, but women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own. Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately.

• Changes in how the breast or nipple feels: Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.

• Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician. • Discharge from the nipple: Any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. A milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician. Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A changing situation calls for a change in plans. Although you might prefer the schedule you had already worked up, you could do better by agreeing to make the needed adjustments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That once seemingly rock-solid proposition you favored might be hiding some serious flaws. Take time to check it more carefully and question anything that seems out of kilter. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Finish up those lingering tasks so that you can then arrange to spend some time in quiet reflection. This will go a long way in restoring both your physical and spiritual energies. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A family situation could heat up and boil over unless you deal with it as soon as possible. Try to persuade other family members to work with you to help cool things down. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cheer up, Kitty Cat! That low feeling will begin to ebb by midweek, and you should be back in the social swirl in time for the weekend. A longpostponed deal could be starting up again. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Going too fast and too far on too little knowledge could be risky. Best to slow down and check for any gaps in your information. It’s what you don’t know that could hurt you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to make peace among quarreling family members, friends or colleagues can be tough. Expect some resistance, maybe even some expressions of resentment. But stay with it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Changing your mind doesn’t have to be a problem once you realize that you might have good and sufficient cause to do so. Make your explanations clear and complete. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unkept promise can be irksome and easily raise the Archer’s ire. But instead of getting into a confrontation, take time to check why someone you relied on came up short. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A new workplace distraction creates an unnecessary delay. The sooner you deal with it, the better for all concerned. A personal matter also should be attended to as soon as possible. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Once again, the Aquarian’s gift for applying both practical and creative methods to resolve a situation makes all the difference. Personal relationships thrive during the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A relationship appears to be losing its oncestrong appeal for reasons that might be different from what you think. An open and honest talk could lead to some surprising revelations. BORN THIS WEEK: Your life is bound by your belief that character counts more than anything else. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

* On Sept. 7, 1813, the United States gets its nickname, Uncle Sam, when a newspaper picks up on the story of Samuel Wilson, a meat packer who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson If you have a beautiful planter that has no drainage holes, you can pot your plant in a second pot that will fit inside. Put a few pebbles in the bottom of the pretty planter, then put your potted plant in. This way, the roots won’t rot in any excess water. You can cover any gap between the pots with a bit of moss or more pebbles.” -- K.D. in Georgia

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 4, 1918, German Chancellor Max von Baden sends a telegraph message to President Woodrow Wilson requesting an armistice between Germany and the Allied powers in World War I. After a difficult month of negotiations, World War I came to an end on Nov. 11, 1918.

Pros and cons of joint replacement surgery To people outside the medical field, joint replacement surgery might sound like a solution that’s considered only after all other options have been exhausted. But joint replacement surgery has become very common, even though some studies have suggested certain procedures are being performed unnecessarily. A 2014 study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology found that one-third of patients who undergo knee replacement surgery may not be appropriate candidates for the procedure because their symptoms are not severe enough to merit aggressive intervention like surgery. The decision to undergo surgery is always a patient’s to make. Weighing some pros and cons of joint replacement surgery can help patients make the most informed decisions possible.

* On Oct. 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy advises American families to build bomb shelters to protect themselves from atomic fallout in the event of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. One year later, the world hovered on the brink of nuclear war after the USSR placed nuclear missiles in Cuba. * On Oct. 5, 1978, Isaac Bashevis Singer wins the Nobel Prize for literature. Singer wrote about Jewish life in Poland and the United States. One of his stories, “Yentl,” was made into a movie directed by and starring Barbra Streisand in 1983.

Pros - The Cleveland Clinic notes that many patients who have undergone joint replacement surgeries have experienced dramatic improvement within a relatively short time after undergoing the surgery. Much of that improvement is related to pain, which for many people becomes overwhelming prior to surgery. Another benefit to joint replacement surgery is the recovery time. For example, the Cleveland Clinic notes that patients who have knee replacement surgery are usually standing and even moving the joint the day after their surgeries. Within six weeks, those same patients are typically walking comfortably with very little support. While each patient is different, any fears that joint replacement surgery will require patients to be immobile for months after surgery are unwarranted. Joint replacement surgery also can be a long-term solution, whereas the alternatives might not be. The Cleveland Clinic says that roughly 85 percent of knee implants will last 20 years, and that life expectancy figures will grow as technology advances. Cons - As beneficial as joint replacement surgery can be, it’s not without downsides. Cost is one such disadvantage. How much a patient pays for the surgery depends on his or her coverage, but AARP notes that the average knee replacement surgery costs $31,000. Such costs can be prohibitive for aging men and women who are no longer working. Another potential disadvantage to going under the knife, especially for those who are borderline candidates for replacement surgeries, is the likelihood that surgery won’t have a significant impact on quality of life. A 2017 study published in the journal BMJ found that knee replacement had minimal effects on quality of life, especially for patients whose arthritis was not severe. Joint replacement surgeries are common. When deciding if surgery is their best option, patients should consider the pros and cons of going under the knife before making their final choice. neighbor. While I am not able to pay you for your generosity, I do believe the Lord will bless you for your kindness.

All season, my neighbor has selflessly mowed the lawn at the home I rent. I am a single mom with two small children, and I also work full-time, so it is hard for me to find the time to mow the lawn while keeping an eye on my little ones. I couldn’t ask for a more thoughtful, caring We have a neighbor that goes out almost every Friday and/or Saturday night leaving their dogs to bark nonstop for hours. The dogs are obviously barking out of separation anxiety, and we have previously contacted the neighbors to no avail. You would think they would care that their dogs are in distress when they are not home, not to mention we can’t even open our windows on a beautiful summer night. Please be responsible dog owners and care for not only your neighbors but for how this effects your dogs on a regular basis. Thank you. I don’t know which governmental agency is responsible, the County or the Town, but I am beyond furious. The growth along the roadway was not an impediment to traffic or to visibility. It was however habitat to pollinators, filled with butterflies and bees to name but two, who foraged there. What was destroyed was nearly two miles of habitat. Now, it and they are gone. For what reason? When will we stop being so focused on what gives us a sense of satisfaction, our need for making things “neat and tidy” in the landscape, that we destroy others in the process? When will we stop going our merry way without any thought to our impact on other lives?

I enjoy reading the Rants, especially those about poor restaurant service. However, while venting may make you feel better, a post about an unnamed restaurant in an unnamed city has no effect. Did you complain to the manager? Did you contact corporate? That gets results. Some of my friends cry, “But I don’t want anyone to lose their job!” Baloney! If the servers have such disdain for their customers, they don’t belong in the service industry. The position will then go to someone who truly needs it and will do a wonderful job. My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson “My daughter is a softball player, and here’s what her coach suggested as an ice pack for when she gets home: unpopped popcorn kernels. They get cold but not uncomfortably so, they can easily mold to any body part and they don’t melt into a mess. If you needed to, you can empty them out into a pan and stick your hand or foot into it. Be sure to label them so you don’t try to pop them later!” -- L.D. in Georgia

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is no small task for today’s working parents. But such a goal is possible.
