Victor Farmington Library Repair Café to Hold Second Event By Amanda Dudek

hen something breaks, throw it out, right? Not anymore! Repair Cafés are popping up all over New York State to repair broken items, keep material out of the waste stream and build community. These Repair Cafés are also teaching skills which are all too often being lost. “Repair Café was started in 2009 in the Netherlands by a woman who wanted to keep things out of the waste stream while teaching useful repair skills,” said Greta Selin-Love, Community Services Librarian at Victor Farmington Library. “We, too, hope to build enthusiasm for a more sustainable society.” The Victor Farmington Library held its first free Repair Café last May, and it was very well-received. “The community loved it, including both our Repair Coaches and our guests,” said Selin-Love. “About thirty items came through. Twenty-five were repaired, and our Repair Coaches offered advice on the rest.” Repair Coach volunteers all came from the local community. “Our guests were thrilled and very appreciative,” said Selin-Love. “It was very cross-generational, encouraging not just adults, but adolescents as well to repair items rather than simply throw them out.” People bring a wide variety of items, like lamps, small appliances, PC & Tablet Software (no Apple products), clothing, textiles, wooden and Our guests ceramic items, stuffed toys are thrilled! and jewelry. “We predict many items -Greta Selin-Love will be returned to usable condition,” Selin-Love said. “During our first event, several people brought in things that belonged to loved ones. One visitor brought in a stained-glass Christmas tree in which the lighting was not working. It had belonged to the owner’s mother, and our Repair Coaches were able to fix it. Children brought in items, too, including a remote-control truck.”

The Victor Farmington Library will hold two Repair Cafés a year: one in November and one in May. In other areas Repair Cafés have become so popular they are held quarterly and even monthly. Selin-Love hopes the community will continue to embrace the Repair Café concept, bringing in more items. “I went down to

the Repair Café in Saratoga Springs,” she recalled. “It was their third event, and it was bustling!” While repairing items and reducing waste is a central aim of the Repair Café, it is not the only goal. “Building community is a big goal of ours,” said Selin-Love. “Many people no longer sit on their front porches in the evening and get to know their neighbors. Now, people may live two or three houses apart and never know each other. Everyone is so incredibly busy or sitting in front of screens. Here, whether they are waiting to have access or sitting with the Repair Coaches, they are meeting and socializing with those in their community. The Victor Farmington Library’s November Repair Café will be held on Saturday, November 2nd from 11am-2pm. “If you have something hanging around your house that is in need of repair– a lamp that needs rewiring, a broken toaster, a jacket with a torn seam– bring it to our Repair Café!” encouraged Selin-Love. Repair Coaches will be on hand to look at items and determine if they can be fixed. Repairs will be made on first-come-first-serve basis. If you know your item needs a specific part, please bring it along!” said Selin-Love. “We hope you will come join us!” For more information, contact Greta Selin-Love at gselin@pls-net.org or (585) 924-2637. REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME One of the most popular methods of reducing radon concentrations involves a process called active soil depressurization, or ASD. This is a cost-effective and reliable technique to reduce radon that involves capturing the radon from beneath a building before it can enter the dwelling. A venting system draws the radon gas from the soil beneath the foundation and exhausts it outside of the building - far away from windows and other home openings. A continuously operating fan draws and discharges the radon outdoors. Radon that has infiltrated water supplies may require other removal methods. Such methods may require spraying water into a contained air space, introducing air bubbles into the water or storing water in a tank until the radon has decayed. Another method employs granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove radon from the water. The GAC method has been more widely tested and is more commonly used in individual homes, according to the EPA.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

Rake leaves sensibly Power blowers and mulchers make fast work of leaves, but at the expense of the environment. Gas-powered devices discharge fuel exhaust into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking. While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of choices could make it difficult to select what is best for your needs. Avoid snap judgments. Take the time to check them all out to find the one that really meets your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You could once again experience pressure from others who would like to see you move in another direction. But heed your Bovine instincts to stay on your own path. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking charge of a project that seems to be about to stall or collapse altogether could be a challenge. But once everyone knows what you expect of him or her, things should go smoothly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid the pressures of the upcoming holiday period by setting a time right now to discuss how to divide up the responsibility of helping a loved one come through a difficult period. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s not too early for all you Leonas and Leos to start making long-distance travel plans. The sooner you stop procrastinating and start deciding where, when and how you’re going, the better. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you’ve known for years might disappoint you, or even make you feel you’ve been betrayed. But check the facts carefully before you make charges that could backfire on you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A holiday plan might need to be revised to accommodate an unexpected complication. Come up with an alternative arrangement as soon as possible to avoid more problems down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t accept halfway explanations for a situation that requires full disclosure. The more you know now, the better able you will be to handle any complications that might arise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The cooperation you relied upon might not be easy to get. Maybe there’s an information gap. See if everyone understands the situation. If not, be sure to offer a full explanation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Problems caused by that recent workplace distraction should soon be easing, allowing you to resume working at a less frantic pace. That personal matter also begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Changing your mind about a job decision isn’t easy for the usually committed Aquarian. But once you check it out, you’ll find facts you didn’t know before. And facts don’t lie. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your unique way of sizing up a situation gives you an edge in resolving that upsetting workplace problem. Stay on your current course regardless of any attempts to distract you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are emotionally attuned to what’s going on around you, and you easily pick up on people’s needs. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Medicare Enrollment Season Is Coming: 5 Tips To Make Sure You’re In The Right Plan (NAPS)—Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2019. This is your yearly chance to shop for insurance coverage that best meets your needs. People covered by Medicare will have even more plans with a host of new benefits to choose from for 2020. Here are five things to keep in mind for Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period. 1. Review your 2020 coverage options. Medicare Advantage plan details change each year, so the policy that was the least expensive or best match for you in 2019 may not be right for 2020. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year.
• On Nov. 4, 1979, student followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini send shock waves across America when they storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran. The radical Islamic fundamentalists took 90 hostages. • On Nov. 5, 1968, in one of the closest elections in U.S. history, Republican challenger Richard Nixon defeats Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Because of third-party candidate George Wallace, neither Nixon nor Humphrey received 50% of the vote. • On Nov. 6, 1528, the Spanish conquistador Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is shipwrecked on a low sandy island off the coast of Texas. Starving, dehydrated and desperate, he is the first European to set foot on the soil of the future Lone Star state.
2. Look out for drug coverage changes. It’s common for insurance companies to tweak their list of covered drug and prices. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses. Check to make sure that the medications you need are still covered by your plan in 2020, and pay close attention to any special rules you need to follow to get the most coverage for your medications. Online tools, including eHealthMedicare.com’s prescription drug coverage comparison tool, can help you find the best option for 2020. 3. Make sure your doctors are still covered. The doctors and hospitals that participate in your Medicare plan’s network often change each year as well. Make sure your preferred providers are covered under your current plan or any new plan that interests you. The amount you’ll pay when you get care from a doctor or hospital that does not participate with your plan will be higher than what you’ll pay if you stay within your plan’s network, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. 4. Compare benefits. Along with price comparisons, be sure to review the full range of services and benefits offered by competing Medicare plans. These can include everything from preferred pharmacy and mail-order prescription discounts to dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. And for 2020, many Medicare Advantage plans will offer supplemental benefits that provide additional assistance to people with chronic illness, such as non-emergency transportation, virtual medical visits, caregiver support, nutritional counseling and meal delivery, and air conditioning, among others. 5. Work with a professional to understand your choices. To make sure you’re viewing a wide range of plans available on the market, work with an expert in Medicare products that represents more than just one insurance company. It doesn’t cost anything extra. A licensed agent can help you understand and make sense of all your options and select coverage that best matches your needs, budget, and lifestyle. The expert help of a licensed insurance agent can help you get the best medicare policy for your needs. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Adult Wary About Tonsillectomy
Affordable Dental Implant
---
Solve Your Dental Problem Schedule A Free Consultation
DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor recommends a tonsillectomy based on the fact that I suffer from chronic strep. I am apprehensive about this surgery as an adult. What are the realistic risks of the surgery versus continuing to experience regular cases of strep throat? -- O.C.
Do you have missing teeth? Eastman Dental can help. Limited time we have a special promotion on Dental Implants (40% or more) for an Educational Event at Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester.
Call Today (585) 273-4489 Stacie_Ellis@urmc.rochester.edu 625 Elmwood Ave Rochester, NY 14620 • On Nov. 8, 1951, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra is voted the American League’s most valuable player. He went on to be the league MVP twice more, in 1954 and 1955.
ANSWER: Strep throat infections that are chronic (lasting more than three months) or recurrent are indications for tonsillectomy in adults; however, this is an uncommon surgery in adults, and there isn’t a lot of published data on the effectiveness of treatment. Some data shows that tonsillectomy does reduce incidence of infection, as would be expected. Other data shows improved quality of life and fewer missed work days. My own experience is limited to a handful of patients: All have had significant improvement in the number and severity of infections. On the other hand, the surgery itself is unpleasant, and that’s putting it mildly. There is a significant risk of major complications (perhaps around 3%). One patient told me that the first two weeks after surgery were horrendous, but gradually improved over time. As always, it’s a balance between benefits and risks of surgery. But it’s a difficult enough surgery that you are wise to be apprehensive, and I would recommend surgical consultation only if your symptoms were severe enough and significantly impact your life. ***
• On Nov. 9, 1989,
DEAR DR. ROACH: Three years ago, my mother was prescribed 50,000 IU of vitamin D per week. I read that this dose can lead to serious complications if continued for more than a month or two. How common is it for someone to be on such a high dose for three years? Should my mother insist that her doctor take her off this medication? -- L.H. ANSWER: Fifty thousand units a week is frequently given for eight to 12 weeks in people with significant deficiency in vitamin D, and people often then are switched to a daily dose of 1,000 to 2,000 IU. However, some people prefer a weekly dose, and 10,000 to 20,000 would be the usual dose. Perhaps 10% to 20% of the time, in my experience, people do need higher doses, and 50,000 is not unheard of (some people have a genetic condition requiring high doses). However, this dosing should be guided by blood levels, and I certainly would feel better knowing that your mother has had her level measured if continuing this high dose. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter gives her 3-year-old daughter fizzy water daily. All her water bottles and sippy cups are filled with some kind of carbonated water. My granddaughter’s appetite seems to have decreased. Could this be caused by the fizzy water? Is it harmful to her stomach? -- L.B. ANSWER: I don’t recommend carbonated water for babies or small children. The dissolved gas in the water can distend the stomach, causing cramps, and that gas has to come out, meaning burps or flatulence. The sense of distention in the stomach might be causing her to eat less as well. Stick to tap or bottled water in reasonable amounts. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. I must admit that I’m just a casual fan of baseball, but when the World Series rolls around, I like to tune in. The announcers do such a good job of acquainting you with the players, their stories and the importance of the game. Game one of this year’s series, the Washington Nationals vs. the Houston Astros, was a terrific game eventually won by the Nationals - a bit of an upset in Houston’s home field and against one of the best pitchers in baseball: Gerrit Cole. The best part was how immersed I became in the game, didn’t once look at my smart (life sucking device) phone and thoroughly enjoyed the
4-hour feat. Play ball!
It was a stupid thing to do. My light turned green, and I started making a left. You peeled out of that restaurant like a bat of you know where with no turn signal on. You were lucky I was able to bring the car to a stop halfway out as my classic car is not made with power brakes. It was a stupid, dangerous thing to do. I was tempted to backtrack and tell the police in the grocery store parking lot who were attending to a fender bender.
I had a test taken and the doctor’s office said the results should be in on Friday. I told them I would call on Monday. So, on Monday I called three times and couldn’t get an answer. The doctor’s office can’t keep any help. There is always someone new that has no answers. I wonder why they can’t keep any help. My time is worth something also. They think just because they are doctors, they are above everyone else.
I’m receiving numerous calls for solicitors everyday…at all hours! They need to stop! The only reason I answer the phone is because it may be the hospital calling. I have a sick brother in Hospice. I’m so aggravated by these annoying solicitors!
Please tell the [local] college and high school students who run down [local] route and onto [local] roads to be more careful. They are running, sometimes 4 wide, into the lanes of traffic on very busy roads. Once they are on [local], it is very
hard to see them in the shadows of the tree line on both sides. Yesterday, they were running all the way in my lane of traffic and with oncoming traffic, and there was nowhere to move. They are not wearing highly visible clothing, and you can’t see them until you are right upon them. I’m sure in their mind, the rest of us will automatically just know they are there and to move out of their way, but with other vehicles included in the mix, along with weather conditions, they need to be more cautious.
Thank you, a million times, to the young lady who stopped in the middle of North Street of LeRoy for my puppy that got out of the door and ran into the road. She beeped so he would move, but he is deaf, so he continued to stand there. She was very patient. I am so grateful for caring people like you!

My family and I want to thank the person driving the dark colored pick-up that stopped oncoming traffic in front of the Mt Pleasant Cemetery on 10/23! We were just entering the cemetery with several cars behind us. That is a tricky entrance at best with just one vehicle, let alone a whole line! You honored us, and kept us all safe as well, by this simple act of respect! God bless you! We love the Genesee Valley Penny Saver! Look forward to getting it every week. Recently, we called “The Tree Service” after seeing

their ad. I know that lots of folks have vented about their disappointing response from some companies. Well, that’s not our experience. We cannot say enough good things about “The Tree Service!” They kept us informed of weather delays and, when the guys came, they were the nicest, most personable and professional men. Polite, eager to please, and they did great work! We hope they liked the cookies, but more than that, we hope they know just how much they were appreciated and that we recommend them most highly. Thank you!
why isn’t there more of a crackdown on advertising of alcoholic beverages? I don’t contribute to fundraisers that feature alcoholic beverages to those attending. Who will join me in boycotting fundraisers from these places? There are better places that need our financial help that don’t make alcoholic beverages available. So, E-cigs are banned due to 6 deaths.... When do they take our motorcycles?

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.
FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT! We are expanding and have immediate openings!

Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits. Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.
