HOW TO MANAGE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TRIPS WITH TOTS IN TOW Holiday shopping has changed considerably since the dawn of the Information Age. Whereas holiday shopping once required shoppers to spend hours perusing stores at the local mall, nowadays many shoppers get the bulk of their shopping done online. Shopping online may be convenient, but more traditional holiday shopping still affords shoppers the chance to find great deals, especially at the last minute. Parents may prefer to leave the kids at home when holiday shopping, but sometimes they don’t have a choice. Fortunately, there are ways to manage holiday shopping trips with kids in tow.

GIFTING THOSE WHO LIVE FAR AWAY The holiday season is a busy time of year for the shipping industry. While shipping companies try their best to get items to recipients in a timely manner, delays can occur. The best way to ensure that gifts arrive on time is to send them a week or two in advance, which also saves gift-givers from having to pay extra for rush shipping. The US Postal Service says international deliveries can take between seven and 21 days to arrive, so leave more time for overseas gifts.

ALL IN STOCK GIFTS FOR PEOPLE WHO HELP YOU YEAR-ROUND Mailman Mail finds its way into the mailbox even when the weather outside is frightful. Mailmen spend much of their workdays outdoors braving the elements, so a gift that helps make their time outdoors more comfortable makes sense. But before gifting their mailmen, shoppers should know that there are rules governing the gifts that the mailman can and cannot accept. According to the United States Postal Service®, mailmen can accept gifts worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion. However, carriers are forbidden from accepting cash and cash equivalents. In addition, mailmen cannot accept more than $50 worth of gifts in a calendar year. Moisture wicking shirts can help mail carriers stay warm on cold days, and they’re designed to quickly move moisture away from the body to the outer layer of the shirt. Such shirts can be worn beneath carriers’ uniforms to keep them warm and dry on cold days. Shoe inserts, a basket of sunscreen and some healthy snacks that can be eaten on-the-go are other great gifts for mail carriers.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

a

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Place the tree in water the moment you get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, place it in water the moment you get home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses, trees likely won’t need their stands filled more than once per day.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My boyfriend recently was diagnosed with an aneurysm. The report says the abdominal aorta is 3.02 cm in largest dimension and recommends screening every six months. Do we need to see a cardiologist for a second opinion? Is there medication to help? -- B.S. ANSWER: The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body. It comes directly off the left ventricle of the heart and supplies blood to the entire body. It may become enlarged either in the chest (a thoracic aneurysm) or in the abdomen. Abdominal aortic aneurisms are more common in men, especially over 65, and smoking is the biggest risk factor. There are contributing familial conditions as well, such as Marfan syndrome. Most people have an abdominal aorta that is no bigger than 3 cm, so your boyfriend is just barely over the cutoff. His risk for rupture, the dreaded complication of an AAA, is negligible at this size. I agree with the screening recommendations, and would advise tobacco cessation if he smokes, regular moderate exercise and control of blood pressure if high. Seeing a cardiologist would be very reasonable: Your boyfriend could get personalized advice on risk reduction. Although aspirin and statin drugs may have a benefit, the evidence for it is weak. Most experts do not recommend them unless there are other indications for taking them.

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE Skin: Every day burn victims benefit from donors who have chosen to donate their skin. Skin grafts treat people with serious burns by stopping infections and reducing scarring and pain. MTF Biologics also notes that donated skin tissue helps reconstruct the breasts of women following mastectomy procedures.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a hernia operation in 2015. The repair included insertion of mesh patches that now have been recalled. Since the operation, I have had many health issues. Is there a blood test or other test to see if the mesh is the cause of my problems? Should I have it removed and replaced? I am 83. -- J.C.L. ANSWER: Surgical mesh is commonly used in hernia repair, as well as in many gynecologic surgeries. Mesh reduces the need for re-operation. However, there is an increased rate of long-term complications that partially offsets the benefit of using mesh. Complications related to the mesh can be very serious, such as bowel obstruction, perforation or bleeding; these usually require urgent surgery. However, symptoms also may be less specific, and include pain, non-healing wounds and infection. Of people with a mesh repair, 4% to 6% had evidence of complications after five years of follow-up, according to a well-done study from Denmark. I am aware of recalled mesh products (49 out of the top 50 results on a web search were from personal injury law firms; the 50th was from the Food and Drug Administration) and reports of significantly higher complication rates from recalled (as well as from counterfeit) mesh. Without knowing more about your health issues, it is difficult to weigh in on whether the mesh is likely to be causing it. There is no simple blood or imaging test that will give a definitive answer. However, if your symptoms are among those possibly related to mesh complication, it absolutely would be appropriate to have a discussion with your surgeon about the upsides and downsides of a re-operation. I would be cautious about recommending another surgery for an 83-year-old, unless the symptoms are significant and your surgeon feels they are likely due to mesh complications.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Travel Trends To Inspire Your 2020 Vacation Planning (NAPS)—Some things never change when it comes to traveling with friends and family, but every year new trends arise as travelers discover new places and ways to travel. With data and insights from its global vacation rental marketplace, Vrbo identified where, how and why Americans will travel for vacation in 2020. Up-and-coming destinations Travelers are always looking for “off-the-beaten path” or “hidden gem” destinations for their next trip. The top emerging domestic destinations all have one thing in common: the great outdoors. From ghost towns to sea islands, adventurous travelers are visiting places like Big Bend National Park, Olympic National Park and Chattahoochee National Forest. “This is the third year in a row travelers’ desire to be outdoors has filled the up-and-coming destinations list,” said Vrbo Travel Expert Melanie Fish. “Clearly, people want the comforts of a home away from home while soaking in scenery.” On the rise: same-city stays Same-city stays refer to people booking vacation rentals in their own city—not to be confused with staycations, which involve staying at your own home. The top single place that Chicago Vrbo renters come from is Chicago, and that rings true for a number of major American cities, including Philadelphia, Dallas and Atlanta. Another emerging travel phenomenon may come into play: celecations, when families and friends gather to celebrate special occasions. People who live in town may rent a vacation home to host and comfortably accommodate groups of guests for a holiday or a milestone life event. Hottest international beach destinations Where are trendsetting travelers heading to the beach in 2020? Portugal. The country took three of the top five spots on Vrbo’s list of international beach destinations: Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto and Lisbon. Portugal is known for its affordability and for some of the best waves in Europe. Other destinations include Chania, Greece and Catania, Italy. Drivable destinations: moving up More Americans are taking short-stay vacations of two or three days—likely an outgrowth of flexible time-off policies and prioritization of experiences with people over material goods. Whether it’s a long weekend or a day trip, an exceptional vacation destination is less than a tank of gas away! In fact, Vrbo’s top five short-stay destinations are all less than 300 miles away from the top origin markets that guests were traveling from. From urban getaways to nature escapes, travelers are taking short trips to these top destinations: St. Louis; McCurtain County (Broken Bow), Okla.; Newton County, Ark.; Grays Harbor County, Wash. and Ruidoso, New Mexico. On Dec. 16, 1773, in Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians board three British tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea into the harbor. The raid was in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773, which granted the East India Company a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade. On Dec. 19, 1843, Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol” is published. Dickens was sent to work in a factory at age 12 when his father was thrown into debtors’ prison. On Dec. 22, 1864, Union Gen. William Sherman presents the city of Savannah, Georgia, to President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman captured the key Confederate port after his famous March to the Sea from Atlanta.

Cut pre-cut trees before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they’ll need to make it through the season when they get home.

Thank you, Batavia! Thank you to the downtown businesses in Batavia for the beautiful window decorations. We love coming down Main Street and seeing all the festive lights and decorations!

My, my, with all the chaos in the world, this rant keeps surfacing about someone assisting a handicapped person in a wheelchair, without being asked to do so. Calm down about someone being concerned about you. You really have your teeth in this. My mom was handicapped with polio, and she was an independent woman who did many things in her life. Yet, she was gracious and gladly accepted help or assistance when needed. She never viewed assistance as a form of someone having pity for her. In a world where many lack care and concern for others, I think you should appreciate the kind act of others. Also, if you don’t want help or feel it as an assault, then you can still graciously decline the kind gesture. Enjoy the life you have!

Gratitude to an honest gentleman! My heartfelt thanks to the gentleman who found my little purse in the Batavia WalMart parking lot on Monday, December 2 and immediately turned it and its contents in to the Customer Service department. It must have fallen off my arm while walking to my car. I never expected to find it already waiting for me, intact, in the few minutes it took me to return to the store. I am deeply grateful for your honesty and integrity. Have a blessed Christmas!

Pleasant surprise at the RPO concert! My wife and I were in line to get our RPO tickets at Livonia High School when a woman came up and handed us a ticket. We were stunned to find that the admission was fully paid and never had a chance to thank the woman. So, a very public Thank You for your kindness!

To the dog owners who walk their dogs at [local park] and then leave little plastic bags of dog poop all over the place - stop! Cleaning up after your dog does not mean leaving bags of poop for others to pick up. Take it with you and dispose of it in your garbage. Leaving it is lazy and disgusting!

very appreciative of his kind and caring help. Would you rather he keeps walking by, leaving the person stranded? Your thought pattern is very odd. I hope I never have to read another rant about this again.

Time and again, a person in a wheelchair complains and apparently doesn’t appreciate the kindness that perfect strangers display toward them when they offer to help. How sad! Just a couple of days ago, my adult son inquired when he saw someone in a motorized wheelchair having difficulty. Their battery had gone dead. He was able to get help and push the person to an area where the battery could be recharged. The person was

other such services). It’s great! Also, you can screen your calls for calls from Hospice if you know the Hospice phone number and have caller ID. Thoughts are with you.

Isn’t it a state law that when drivers use their windshield wipers that they must use their headlights as well? Wondering why police don’t ticket cars that don’t do this. Can anyone explain why every year retailers locally and nationally start pushing Christmas sales when it isn’t even Halloween yet? Plus, this year Black Friday seems to be occurring every week. Can’t we just enjoy the holiday?

Webster’s White Christmas in the Village

1.

It’s not quite “fah, who, foraze, dah, who, doraze” around the tree in Whoville, but there is something uniquely heartwarming about joining one’s friends and neighbors for community fun and festivities during the holidays. It draws us out, braving the chill, snow and cold, to enjoy hot chocolate, holiday decorations, Christmas cookies, the Nativity, Santa Claus, parades filled with floats and thousands of twinkling lights. Festivities bloomed all over our readership area last weekend. We’ve captured glimpses of their fun and Christmas spirit during Webster’s White 2. Christmas in the Village!

* Scoop up this trick when cooking scallops: Refrigerate uncovered for about 30 minutes before they will hit the pan or grill. This will help to dry out the surface, giving you a good sear instead of a steam. Make sure your pan is hot, and don't leave the stove or grill, because scallops don't take more than 1 1/2 minutes per side.

Hi! I’m I was rescued from an abusive home down south when I was 3 months old. I just turned a year this past January! I’m not exactly sure what I am breed-wise. I love napping and playing with toys, as well as being spoiled with clothes (including boots!). I am a great car traveler - I nap almost the entire time! I also know a few tricks - paw, high five, sit, and lay down - my humans are working on teaching me how to roll over! I’m a self-proclaimed lap dog that loves cuddles!

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Make your holiday preparations one step at a time in order to avoid being overwhelmed and leaving things undone. That confusing family situation continues to work itself out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Ease this year’s holiday money pressures by letting your thrifty side guide you as you look for those perfect gifts that typically reflect your good taste and love of beauty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll have a good handle on potential holiday problems if you delegate tasks to family members, friends or co-workers -- most of whom will be more than happy to help out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Right now you are especially vulnerable to holiday scams that seek to take advantage of your generosity. Best advice: Check them out before you send out your checks. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The upcoming holiday season gives the Big Cat much to purr about. Relationships grow stronger, and new opportunities loom on the horizon, just waiting to be pounced on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A changing situation brings conflicting advice about how to go forward with your holiday plans. Your best bet: Make the decision you feel most comfortable with. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans get back on track after some confusion about the direction you expected to take. A potentially troublesome money matter needs your immediate attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your holiday preparations are on track. But you need to confront a personal situation while you can still keep it from overwhelming everything else. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Tight financial matters ease a bit during this holiday season. But the sagacious Sagittarian is well-advised to keep a tight hold on the reins while shopping for gifts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t put off making decisions about this year’s holiday celebrations, despite the negative comments you’ve been getting from several quarters. Do it NOW! AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The holidays will bring new friends and new opportunities. Meanwhile, be careful to use your energy wisely as you go about making holiday preparations. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There’s good news coming from a most unlikely source. And it could turn out to be one of the best holiday gifts you have had in years. Remember to stay positive. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and loyalty. You make friends slowly -- but with rare exceptions, they’re in your life forever.

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

When you shop small, the bulk of the money you spend and most of your taxes stay local — helping schools, paving streets, keeping you safe. According to the research firm Civic Economics, for every $100 you spend: in a local small business, $68 stays in your community; at a local branch of a chain store, $43 remains; online, virtually no money stays local.
