NOW HERE’S A TIP * Lightly spoon flour into your measuring cup. Never pack it down or tap the cup to level. Simply fill and then use the flat edge of a knife to remove the excess back to the original container. It's best to weigh dry goods if possible, for the most consistent results.

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver In Babylon 4,000 years ago, it was accepted practice that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and so that time became known as the honey month -- what we know today as the honeymoon.

REMODELING HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Having second thoughts could be a good thing, even if you’re determined to go through with your plans. You might find it worthwhile to take a fresh look at how things have been set up. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial matters could continue to be a problem until you’re able to straighten out some of the more pesky situations. Once that happens, the rest should be easier to unsnarl. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family matters once again take center stage, and should be dealt with competently and quickly. And, again, insist on others taking on their fair share of the responsibilities. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your creative pursuits seem to be running into a roadblock. But rather than blame outside factors, look within to see if you might be holding back your efforts for some reason. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keep that keen Cat’s Eye focused on relevant aspects of this new situation in your life. Don’t be distracted by trivial matters. You need the pertinent facts before making a decision. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) As much as you prefer doing things on your own, continue to accept help if you still need to resolve the problem affecting your project. Some cheerful news is about to come your way. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) While you might begrudge the added time it will take to get your project from point A to B to C, etc., you could benefit from the facts that will emerge over this expanded time span. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Regarding your workplace suggestions, be prepared to produce the facts to counter reactions from skeptics who feel your approach is unreasonable or even impossible. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Savvy Sagittarians will look for workrelated answers on their own rather than rely on unproved assumptions. It might take more time to do so, but the payoff is worth it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects continue to favor family issues, with special emphasis this week on changes in and around your home. Get everyone to suggest what he or she would like to see done. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A matter you thought had been settled might still produce surprises. Best advice: Continue to gather facts to bolster your position just in case you need to produce them quickly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) While your instincts are usually right when discerning ‘twixt truth and deception, you could benefit from doing more research on the new “prospect” that you’ve been pitched. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is only matched by your generosity, making you the

Protect Yourself From Social Security Scams (NAPS)—Calls and e-mails from scammers pretending to be government employees are widespread. Social Security phone scams are the #1 scam reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Chances are you, a friend, or a family member have received a call like this. You don’t have to be receiving benefits to become a victim. You may get a call saying there is a problem with your Social Security number or account. Everyone, regardless of age, income, and geography, is at risk. Scammers will try to scare and trick you into giving them your personal information or money. Is It A Scam? The best way to protect yourself and your money is to recognize a scam. Scammers use intimidating language and often offer a “solution” to fix what they say is a serious problem with your Social Security number or account. How can you tell when it’s a scam? Social Security will not: •

Say your Social Security number has been suspended.

Call to demand an immediate payment.

• Insist you pay a debt without the ability to appeal the amount you owe. • Require payment by retail gift card, pre-paid debit card, Internet currency, wire transfer, or by mailing cash. •

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 2, 1925, the first nationwide highway numbering system is instituted to minimize confusion. Later, interstate highway numbering would be improved by colored signs and the odd-even demarcation that distinguishes between north-south and east-west travel. On March 3, 1931, President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making “The Star-Spangled Banner” the official national anthem of the United States. Francis Scott Key had composed the lyrics as he witnessed the overnight British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

• Promise a Social Security benefit approval or increase in exchange for information. •

A Look Back…

On March 4, 1966, Beatle John Lennon’s controversial quote is printed in the London Evening Standard: “We’re more popular than Jesus.” After a reprint in the U.S., Bible belt radio DJs organized Beatles record burnings and protests, declaring Lennon’s remarks blasphemous. Even the Vatican chimed in. Lennon eventually apologized.

Ask for your personal information.

Scammers prey on your fears. The stories they tell you would scare anyone. No matter how horrible the story, if they do any of the above, it’s a scam. What Should You Do? If you receive a suspicious call, the safest thing for you to do is: 1.

Hang up!

2.

Don’t share personal information or make a payment.

3. Report the scam to the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov. And, if you receive such threats via e-mail, delete the e-mail and do not click on any links or download any attachments. Even if the e-mail or an attachment contains Social Security’s seal or names of real people, ignore it. Then, report the scam. Other Tips How about if Social Security needs to contact you? Generally, they will mail you a letter and only contact you by phone if you have requested a call or have ongoing business with them. Usually, Social Security will mail you a letter that contains telephone numbers for contacting them. You can also contact Social Security by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting SSA.gov. Scammers are always looking for the next way to trick someone. No matter how someone might try to scam you, learning the warning signs shared here can go a long way to protecting yourself and someone you care about from identify theft and financial loss. If you think you have been scammed, don’t be embarrassed. Report the scam to Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov and share this important information with your family and friends. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Hearing Loss Is Treatable!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Let the experts at Professional Hearing Solutions help you get back to hearing life in high definition!

By Keith Roach, M.D.

No Screening Test for Bile Duct Cancer

Call Dr. Christine Stein at Professional Hearing Solutions... she provides quality care in a warm, friendly environment.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A family friend has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon. ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/ eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and light-colored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery).

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 22-year-old daughter was diagnosed with overactive bladder at the end of June. She tried medications, but they made her sick. She was given a prescription for a physical therapist to work with her for her condition. Unfortunately, she has hit dead ends. How can she find a physical therapist to work with her? -- A.F. ANSWER: Physical therapists, like most other health care professionals, have individual skill sets. Pelvic-floor physical therapy requires a level of expertise that not all physical therapists have. I suspect she may have just been calling physical therapist offices near her and not finding a therapist with that expertise. A quick internet search found a good number of specially trained therapists in the area where she lives. There are many online reviews of physical therapists, just as there are reviews of doctors and dentists. They have some value, but I would be cautious about both overenthusiastic and overly negative reviews. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Bri-Pen Senior Rides is always welcoming volunteers to serve as drivers, dispatchers and coordinators to provide rides to independently ambulatory Brighton and Penfield seniors (65+) to their medical appointments within Monroe County as well as to the Brighton and the Penfield Community Centers on weekdays. BriPen Senior Rides was started in 2017 and is sponsored by the Town of Penfield. It is a wholly volunteer, donation-based service that seniors, without any private transportation, may request one round trip ride or two one-way rides per week. Volunteers provide their services on the weekdays at times convenient for them.

Genesee Valley Penny Saver Begins New Year with Chamber Recognition By Danielle Lorenzo (adapted)

L

ast month, the FairportChamber of Perinton Commerce named the Genesee Valley Penny Saver as its very first Business of the Month in 2020. The Fairport-Perinton Chamber of Commerce, which serves businesses well beyond Fairport Village, into Perinton, Bushnell’s Basin and Egypt, exists to help businesses succeed in today’s fast-paced world. Just as the Chamber connects member and business acquaintances within these communities, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver helps to keep our communities connected. In 1948, our Penny Saver was founded in a garage by Roger and Jane Harrison, in Avon, New York. Their children have become active in the business with Steve Harrison as Publisher, and Kim Dougherty as Vice President. The business outgrew the garage space and now occupies four locations; however, Avon is still the hub and home to the largest of the four. It is in Avon that the papers are printed. An active Chamber member, our Ad Consultant Daria Reitknecht has served the publication for the past eight years. Daria can be heard stating, “Print is the most trusted form of media.” She loves to tell the story of a non-profit which ran ads for 52 weeks on many different advertising channels, and our Genesee Valley Penny Saver earned their greatest results! Our Genesee Valley Penny Saver has a state title, as well. It has been number one in New York State as a free community paper for five years in a row, an award we received from the Circulation Verification Council! In addition to ten printed papers reaching over 132,000 homes in the region, we publish an online presence with each paper, and manage Penny Lane Promotional Products and Penny Lane Printing. Our latest acquisition is a very sophisticated digital printing press. With our new RICOH 7200X, we print a wide variety of eye-catching newsletters, programs, and other books for our clients. 2020 will usher in six editions

of our full-color Home magazines for Webster-Penfield, Greece, and Pittsford-Brighton. These exclusive, direct mail publications will also appear online at rochomepublications.com. In addition to being a member of the FairportPerinton Chamber, our Genesee Valley Penny Saver belongs to other Chambers, including those of Livingston County, Penfield, and Webster. In fact, Daria is on the Board of the Penfield Chamber. We care deeply about our readers and our communities; therefore, we also support the M.A.D.D., local Breast Cancer organizations and many other important social causes.
